Hello Fellow Opera Goers, Welcome to our new season and our production of Romeo and Juliet. Thank you so much for joining us here at the Overture Center. We look forward to seeing you all season long, as we offer the Midwest premiere of Charlie Parker’s Yardbird in February and Mozart’s classic The Magic Flute in April. On July 22, we celebrate our 16th year of offering Opera in the Park in the natural amphitheater of Madison’s Garner Park as our free gift to the community. Neither the mainstage productions nor Opera in the Park, nor our many engagement programs described elsewhere in this playbill would be possible without your generous support. There are many operas based on Romeo and Juliet, but only a few are still seen on today’s stages, and Gounod’s is the only one that has consistently stayed in the repertory. We are pleased to stage it this year to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. As an added treat, the UW’s Chazen Museum of Art is the Wisconsin host for the Folger Shakespeare Library’s “First Folio: The Book That Gave Us Shakespeare,” exhibit, which opened on November 3 and runs until December 11. The First Folio is the first-ever collection of Shakespeare’s plays, compiled by friends seven years after his death. Check the Chazen website for events surrounding this exhibition, and join our entire community in celebrating “Shakesconsin!”

Dear Friends, Welcome to Verona! I am delighted you have joined us for Romeo and Juliet, part of this year’s celebration of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, which includes his First Folio on display at the Chazen Museum starting this weekend. There are hundreds of operas based on Shakespeare, and many based on Romeo and Juliet, but Gounod’s opera is by far one of the most enduring. I think that is because it focuses so purely on the young couple, with truly beautiful music throughout, from their passionate first meeting through their final prayer for forgiveness as they die. As we start our 56th season, I am somewhat amazed at the range of events we now hold, many of them thanks to the opening of The Margaret C. Winston Madison Opera Center in 2013. Opera Novice is in its fourth season of offering free talks about different aspects of opera. Our program of previews in libraries and retirement communities has expanded to new parts of Dane County. Our High School Apprentice Program continues to grow; this year we have students from New Glarus to Beloit. We have added films: Cinematheque will show Ingmar Bergman’s The Magic Flute next March. We hold opera-themed culinary events, like next April’s “Mozart Dinner” at Cento, or “Chocolate, Wine, and Opera” at Chocolaterian in May, both featuring our Studio Artists (itself a program that is only five years old). We have begun to plan even more activities around the Midwest premiere of Charlie Parker’s Yardbird in February. I hope you will save the dates for “Jazz at the Opera Center” on January 8, featuring Richie Cole and the Alto Madness Orchestra, as well as composer Daniel Schnyder performing with the UW’s Blue Note Ensemble in a concert of Charlie Parker’s music on February 9, 2017. We could not possibly do all of this without the support of all of our donors. Madison Opera lives on the stage of Overture Hall, but also in programming around our community, and at Opera in the Park. Thank you for helping us be part of our vibrant region. THE STORY OF THE OPERA Verona, 14th Century A chorus introduces the story of the endless feud between the Montague and Capulet families, and the love between their children, Romeo and Juliet. At a ball at the Capulet palace, Tybalt waits for his cousin Juliet and assures her suitor, Count Paris, that her beauty will overwhelm him. Lord Capulet presents his daughter to the guests and invites them to dance. Romeo, a Montague, enters with his friends. He tells them about a strange dream he has had, but his friend Mercutio dismisses it as the work of the fairy Queen Mab. Romeo see Juliet and is instantly entranced with her. Juliet tells Gertrude, her nurse, that she is not interested in marriage, but when Romeo approaches her, both feel that they are meant for each other. Just as they discover each others’ identity, Tybalt returns. Romeo masks himself and rushes off. Tybalt identifies the intruder as Montague’s son, but Capulet restrains him, ordering the party to continue. Later that night, Romeo, trying to elude both his friends and the Capulets, stumbles into Juliet’s garden. When she steps out onto her balcony, he comes forward and declares his love. Capulet servants briefly interrupt their encounter. Alone again, they vow to marry. Romeo comes to Friar Lawrence’s cell at daybreak, followed by Juliet and Gertrude. Convinced of the strength of their love, the priest agrees to marry them, hoping that the union will end the fighting between their families. Intermission At daybreak, Stephano, Romeo’s page, returns to the plaza outside the Capulet house. Thinking Romeo is trapped inside, Stephano sings a mocking song to draw out the Capulets. Mercutio protects Stephano and is challenged by Tybalt. Romeo appears and tries to make peace, but after Tybalt kills Mercutio, Romeo stabs him. As he dies, Tybalt makes Lord Capulet promise that Juliet will marry Paris. The Duke of Verona arrives and both Capulets and Montagues cry for justice. Romeo is banished from the city, as both families declare there will never be peace between them. Romeo visits Juliet before going into exile. She forgives him for killing her cousin, and they assure each other of their love. Knowing he must depart before sunrise, Romeo reluctantly leaves when the morning lark sings. Lord Capulet enters and tells his 9 • Madison Opera
THE STORY OF THE OPERA daughter that she must marry Paris that same day. She is left alone, desperate, with Friar Lawrence. He gives her a sleeping potion that will make her appear dead, and promises that she will wake with Romeo beside her. Juliet drinks the potion. Not having received Friar Lawrence’s message, Romeo arrives at the Capulets’ crypt and discovers Juliet. Believing her to be dead, he drinks poison. At that moment, she awakens, and the lovers share a final dream of a future together. As Romeo grows weaker, Juliet takes his dagger and stabs herself. The lovers die praying for God’s forgiveness.

Romeo and Juliet ends badly for everyone involved, but it’s not because the characters are evil. In fact, it is their best qualities that lead them to tragedy. Love, loyalty to friends and family, a desire for justice, a sense of honor - these are all traits we aspire to, and yet, taken to excess, they are the undoing of the youth of Verona. Romeo and Juliet love without question. Mercutio is loyal. Tybalt believes in justice. None will survive the evening. In Romeo and Juliet, we see the consequences of allowing what we hate to become more important than what we love. These young characters are determined to live without compromise or not live at all. Romeo and Juliet love. Period. To say, “I can’t live without you” is cliche. Romeo and Juliet mean it. Teenagers make bad choices - bold, idealistic, passionate, bad choices. Romeo and Juliet remind us what is to truly live and to love truly. As Shakespeare puts it: “What love can do, that dares love attempt.” May it ever be so. ~ Doug Scholz-Carlson, stage director

Presenting our 2016/17 High School Apprentices Madison Opera’s High School Apprentice Program offers high school juniors and seniors the unique opportunity to explore and experience the world of professional opera. During the season, our apprentices have dinner with visiting artists, watch rehearsals, participate in workshops and master classes, and get a truly inside perspective on what it means to work in opera.
