Columbus Fourth of July Celebration 2025

Page 1

Welcome

My name is Tory Weidemann, I am the president of the Columbus 4th of July Organization. I’d like to thank our current volunteers-we spend a lot of time organizing and preparing for the celebration throughout the year. I also want to thank all past volunteers for keeping this celebration successful so that Columbus may celebrate the birth of our nation each year for over 50 years.

This is the start of my 21st year volunteering. I started out as a helper, then entertainment chairperson, and vice president after that. Many don’t realize how much planning is put into this celebration. We start planning in August for the next year, so we don’t really have much of a break. All our planning is on a volunteer basis, and we have a great bunch of energetic people on the committee. We are always looking for more volunteers and ideas, so keep an eye out starting in August of 2025 if you’re interested in joining.

The Columbus 4th July Organization, Inc. was formed as a non-profit group in 1972 for the sole purpose of organizing this annual celebration. It is getting bigger with younger volunteers who are happy to make this a special event for years to come. Profits from the celebration go back to the community for improvements to the parks and city, as well as towards the next year’s celebration. This year’s event will start on Tuesday, July 1st with family night at the pavilion. There will be activities like face painting and character meet and greet. The following days will provide a wide range of activities for all ages. Mr. Ed’s Magical Midway Carnival will begin on Wednesday, July 2nd. We will have musical entertainment in the park and a special show for seniors on Sunday, July 6th. Again this year we will be having a bags tournament on Saturday, July 5th at the baseball diamond. Please sign up on our website. Of course, we will be having our parade that runs through the downtown area starting at noon on July 4th. We end July 4th with our spectacular fireworks display at dusk, and this year we are setting aside Saturday, July 5th as a rain date.

Please respect everyone’s choices and help make this a great and fun year for the 4th of July, celebrating America’s independence. I also urge those that are watching the parade with their families to keep an eye on the children, so they don’t run out into the street to get candy. There are a lot of things going on during the parade and we don’t want anyone to get hurt.

On a personal note, the 4th of July committee lost an important member this year. Roger Venden passed away at the young age of 76. He was a big part of the committee for 33 years. He was the president prior to me- I didn’t know it at the time, but he was training me to take over his position when he was done. I had great pleasure spending time with Roger during the celebration after the entertainment garden closed for the night. We were always the last two people hanging around, waiting for the night’s band and sound/lighting guys to tear down their equipment. We would discuss how the night went, how good the band was, what to expect the next night, and what we could do to improve next year’s celebration. He was always the guy at the beginning of the parade directing the floats to get in line and be ready when the noon whistle blew. This year we will have someone different at the beginning getting things lined up and that will be hard for me to see. Roger was also the very last person to be at the end of the parade-- He would drive his golf cart with a sign that says, “That’s all folks” signifying the end of the parade. The committee also meets every morning on the 4th at the Apple Tree Restaurant before the big day starts. This is something that Roger started, and we will continue in honor of him. Roger was my go-to guy for ideas and help with any issues that I would have come up. I will miss him and having a cold beverage while talking about the 4th of July events. He will be missed by all that knew him. Rest in Peace, Roger. We will take it from here. You trained the rest of the committee well.

Please have a safe and happy 4th of July. Enjoy the celebration!

Columbus 4th of July Parade Marshal Randy Koehn

The definition of impossible, according to the local dictionary, is going anywhere in Columbus or Beaver Dam with Randy Koehn and not having someone come up and extend salutations. This gesture is the tip of the legacy that Randy Koehn, the Parade Marshal for the 2025 Columbus, Wisconsin, 4th of July Celebration, is being honored during this year’s festivities.

Koehn was born in Columbus in 1954, later graduating from Lakeside Lutheran High School in 1972. As a youth, it was within the intimacy of the Columbus community that Koehn watched as four of his neighbors along River Road were called into duty for the volunteer fire department whenever the whistle blew. As a

child, when he was too old to visit Santa Claus who appeared at the fire department, Koehn found himself disappointed that “I couldn’t see the fire trucks anymore”. It was within these tender moments of influence that Koehn found his life’s calling.

After volunteering for the Columbus Fire Department (CFD) in 1975, Koehn would go on to a full-time position within the Beaver Dam Fire Department (BDFD) in 1978, a post he would hold for 31 years. There were moments while at BDFD, where he would think into the future and wonder about being the fire chief in his hometown of Columbus one day. After his first retirement in 2009 as BDFD Deputy Fire Chief and overseeing their EMS, Koehn, looking for weekly 20-hour work, accepted a fated opening in Columbus for a part-time position as CFD’s Fire Chief. Koehn was the fire chief within Columbus until his 2nd retirement in 2021. Likely seeking a 3rd retirement, Koehn accepted a role as a funeral assistant with Koepsell Funeral Home (including Koepsell-Zeidler in Columbus) soon afterwards, where he continues to work today.

Randy Koehn, if it hasn’t been recognized already, is a man whose hobbies are focused on teaching others and serving his community. He is also an 18-gallon blood donor. After his 2nd retirement in 2021, Koehn joined

the Columbus Area Historical Society, where he is now President. In August, he will start his 50th year as a high school softball and football official. He cheerfully recounts the friendships he has formed within the Yellow Thunder Officials Association, wherein he has held the title of Secondary-Treasurer for the past 43 years.

Koehn gives his heart to Columbus and the surrounding community every day, whether officiating on the field, at the funeral home bringing connection and condolences, or sharing history. When asked about advice for future dreamers, he responds, “a generation which ignores history has no past and no future”. If Koehn had the power of time travel, he would go to an afternoon baseball game from onehundred years ago and dine in the evening alongside Governor Lewis.

Randy Koehn is your honored Parade Marshal for this year’s 4th of July Independence Day Celebration, a day that Randy muses “I looked forward to as much as Christmas”. This avid Badger fan and local sports advocate asks that you “get involved” within your community and enjoy this year’s celebration in Columbus.
