and the knowledge.
But the Copper Turret is more than just a great place to eat. One of the things that makes the Copper Turret unique is that it was created to provide a live learning model for students in the Culinary Arts and Restaurant Management programs at SUNY Morrisville. Chef Mike Malpezzi works side by side with students. The restaurant's mission is to help the students get proper realworld kitchen experience and to create inspiration for them to take into their careers and into the world. "We really focus on giving our students the best possible real-world experience," says Mike. "And I want my team to inspire each other, to talk about food, get ideas, and try them out!" Chef Mike began his culinary training at the Ye Olde Landmark Tavern before moving on to the Solsville Hotel, followed by a sandwich shop in Hamilton, and then finally to the Copper Turret under the guidance of Chef Kerry Beadle. He credits Chef Beadle with helping him evolve into the chef he is today. Malpezzi's father, William Malpezzi, taught his son the importance of hard work and dedication in the kitchen, invaluable knowledge Malpezzi says has served him well.
two of Malpezzi's culinary mentors. They taught Malpezzi the importance of creativity in the kitchen, and that "the sky is the limit" when it comes to creating new dishes, or old dishes in a new way. All four of these chefs have had a profound impact on Malpezzi's career. He says that he draws on their guidance every day as he strives to create delicious, innovative dishes at the Copper Turret, and pass his own knowledge and experience onto the students. So far, it seems to be working. Many of their graduates have gone on to have successful careers in the culinary arts. And Mike is proud to have played a part in their journey. The next time you’re in the mood for comfort food offered up in elevated ways, as well as experiencing the delicious work of future chefs under the tutelage of Chef Mike, be sure to drop by the Copper Turret in Morrisville. The Heartbeat of Antiquing in New York State A Treasured Community In Every Sense
Antique Week
Victorian The Depot Rose Antique Vintage Gallery Antiques
Cider House Antiques
Turnpike Antiques
Bouckville, New York, is the perfect community for those who love antiquing or shopping in general. With its many antique shops and friendly atmosphere, Bouckville is the mecca for antique seekers who are looking to find that special piece they've been searching for. Whether you're a collector, or dealer, or simply enjoy antiquing as a hobby, you're sure to find something very special.
In 1803, the Third Great Western Turnpike was chartered and became the major route for migration from the northeast to travel west before the Erie Canal or Chenango Canal were built. The Turnpike ran right through Bouckville, and the area prospered because of it. The Turnpike route produced great results for the area's restaurants, diners, lodging sites, and population.
Along just a two-mile stretch of historic highway Route 20 in Bouckville, thousands of antiques can be found in a number of friendly shops, many of which are open nearly year-round. Here you’ll find Cider House Antiques, Victorian Rose Vintage Antiques, Canal House Antiques, Whistle Post Antiques, Cobblestone Trading Co., and Turnpike Antiques - with even more just down the road. Great selections of art, primitives, vintage furniture, vintage memorabilia, toys, clothing, collectibles, and more antiques await those who come looking for their own personal treasures.
Further improvements and benefits came with the advent of motor traffic and in 1934, the Turnpike was officially renamed U.S. Route 20. The road was significantly improved and became a key route for east-west travel nationwide. It remained the main route until the construction of the Interstate Highway System in the 1950s and 1960s. Being a passage for so many travelers and home to locals over the course of generations, it's no wonder Bouckville itself began collecting antiques. In 1972, the newly formed Madison-Bouckville Antique
Dealers Association held the first antique show (later to become Antique Week). Today, Antique Week is the largest outdoor antique show in New York State. This is where more than 2,000 dealers and vendors come to showcase their offerings throughout numerous show fields. Tens of thousands of treasure hunters descend on the country crossroads of Bouckville each summer for Antique Week. This event offers something for everyone who enjoys antiquing. There are plenty of chances to bargain with vendors and find that one-of-a-kind item at a great price. Even if you're not in the market for antiques, it's still fun to browse and see all the amazing items on display. And if you get hungry, there are plenty of restaurants open and food trucks on hand serving up delicious eats. No matter if you're a seasoned antique hunter or just looking for a fun day out, be sure to check out Bouckville's Antique Week!
Spring, Summer and Fall—you can shop them all! Here are some great antique events in Madison County. Visit www.MadisonTourism.com/Antiques for full details.
Whether walking the fields during Antique Week or strolling from shop to shop during any other time of the year, Bouckville is a true treasure itself. It's the quintessential community offering that small-town American charm of hospitality, history, amazing collectibles, great food, and memories to last a lifetime.
JUNE
The town's close-knit community of antique dealers is always on hand to help you find what you're looking for - if one shop doesn’t have it, they’ll happily point you to the one that might. So if you're looking for a great place to find antiques, be sure to add Bouckville to your list! Find the next piece for your collection in New York's heartbeat and pulse for everything antique. Happy hunting! This article is based in part on the work of Jim Ford, whose ‘Turnpike Tales’ can be found on madison-bouckville.com. Visit www.MadisonTourism.com/ Antiquing for more information. n

MEET THE INNKEEPERS: GINNY & HOWARD KRUMSIEK
Ginny & H oward Kru msiek
HEAVENLY HOSPITALITY Fernwood Farm Bed & Breakfast Meet Ginny and Howard Krumsiek, the innkeepers of Fernwood Farm Bed & Breakfast in Cazenovia, New York.
It's a beautiful boutique lodging just a short walk from town but far enough away that guests feel the full serenity of the trails, ponds, woods, and rolling fields. Originally built by local legend Lambertus Wolters Ledyard, Ginny and Howard restored the c. 1874 Englishstyle cottage farmhouse into a sanctuary of comfort, style, and luxury. “Our four guest rooms,” Ginny said, “offer visitors king beds with plush bedding, en suite with deluxe towels and bathrobes, complimentary toiletries designed specifically for Fernwood Farm, homemade cookies, purified water, soothing country decorating, and more.” Country-style breakfasts are 22

personally made by Ginny. She noted, “Everything is prepared from scratch,” including muffins, sweetbreads, hash brown casseroles, pancakes, Belgium waffles, and more delectable treats. Ginny is also the gardener, beekeeper, and keeper of chickens on the farm. Howard maintains the entire grounds, creating a tranquil landscape for guests to relax in. Guests can also enjoy an inground swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, and chats with the Krumsieks over cups of coffee or tea.
Ginny and Howard's love for entertaining began long ago. Ginny worked at a Holiday Inn on Seven Mile Beach in the Cayman Islands, as a Party Planner for Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City, and also for a senior community on Long Island, where she honed her craftsmanship
in hospitality. Howard was a Long Island Railroad Conductor, assisting people from all walks of life. Together, they make a great team. After retiring, they moved to Cazenovia to pursue Ginny’s dream of owning their own bed and breakfast. "We consider our bed and breakfast as an extension of ourselves,” said Ginny. “We proudly welcome guests and are very grateful to share a part of ourselves and Cazenovia history with anyone that walks through our door."
So whether you're looking for a romantic getaway or a quiet solo vacation, Fernwood Farm Bed & Breakfast is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the very best that Upstate New York has to offer.

Preserving Legacy,
Inspiring Change The Abolitionist Movement, National Abolition Hall of Fame & Museum, and the Abolitionist Freedom Walk
Madison County, New York, was a significant location for abolitionists in the 19th century. It was a hotbed for the abolitionist movement and the Underground Railroad, with names like Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, and Theodore Weld being familiar. Madison County even had an abolitionist newspaper called the Madison County Abolitionist, which ran from 1841 to 1842. Gerrit Smith, of Peterboro, was a prominent abolitionist and a dedicated advocate for the rights of African Americans. Born in 1797 in Utica, New York, Smith used his wealth and influence to support the anti-slavery cause by financially aiding escaped slaves and supporting efforts to promote their education and welfare. He also played a significant role in various other movements of his time, including temperance, women's suffrage, and land reform.
In 1835, a gathering of influential abolitionists came together in Utica to establish the New York State Anti-Slavery Society. However, their efforts were met with hostility from a mob of anti-abolitionists. In the face of this opposition, Gerrit Smith emerged as a pivotal figure, extending an invitation to the delegates to reconvene the meeting near his home in Peterboro. Four hundred of the six hundred delegates fled the mob and made their way to Peterboro on the cold rainy night, October 21. Three hundred came through Vernon Center to Peterboro. One hundred four people embarked on a lumber barge down the Erie Canal to Canastota and climbed the trail to Peterboro. This significant incident served as a turning point for Gerrit Smith and the abolitionist movement. As a result, Central New York emerged as the epicenter of the anti-slavery cause in America. Today, the hamlet of Peterboro, which is located in the town of Smithfield, is home to the Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark and the National Abolition Hall of Fame & Museum.
The National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum, established in 2004, is an institution dedicated to honoring and commemorating individuals who played significant roles in the abolitionist 26
Inspiration Guide | 315.815.5002
movement in the United States. It seeks to educate visitors about the history of the abolitionist movement through exhibits, displays, and educational programs that delve into the history of abolitionism. The Hall of Fame & Museum provides visitors with an opportunity to learn about the courageous individuals who fought for freedom and equality, encouraging a deeper understanding of the struggle for human rights in the United States. Starting in 2022, the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum began an annual tradition called the Abolitionist Freedom Walk, which follows part of the route taken by the New York State Anti-Slavery Society in 1835 as they moved towards Peterboro to resume their meeting. The event aims to educate and raise awareness about the history of the Underground Railroad and the efforts of abolitionists in assisting enslaved individuals seeking freedom. It also provides an opportunity to honor the courageous actions of those involved in the abolitionist movement. During the Abolitionist Freedom Walk, participants have the chance to explore historical landmarks, engage in discussions, and learn from experts and local historians. The walk, roughly 5.5 miles, goes from Canastota’s Canal Town Museum to Clockville and back, culminating in a reception in Canastota. By retracing the steps of those involved in the New York State Anti-Slavery Society, participants gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced, and the resilience demonstrated, by abolitionists and escaped slaves in their fight for freedom.
