Delphi Falls County Park

ld Erie Canal State Historic Park offers a peaceful, scenic journey along one of the most significant transportation routes in American history. Stretching for 36 miles, the park follows the original Erie Canal towpath. Today, it features a serene multi-use trail perfect for walking, biking, running, or even cross-country skiing in winter.

Spirit of the

Onyota’a:ká

adison County is located within the sacred homelands of the Oneida, or Onyota’a:ká:, people, one of the original members of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. The Oneida homelands originally spanned over six million acres from the St. Lawrence River to the Susquehanna River.

The Oneidas warmly welcomed settlers to their homelands, and even fought beside them during the American Revolution at the nearby Battle of Oriskany and in other

pivotal conflicts. These brave men and women became known as America’s First Allies for their role in the founding of the United States, a legacy that endures today.

This unique shared history—along with the vibrant culture and heritage of the Oneida people—is showcased at the Oneida Indian Nation’s Shako:wi Cultural Center.

Open year-round, the handcrafted white pine log building is a testament to the rich lives, talents and enduring heroism of the Oneida people.

At Shako:wi, visitors can explore this legacy with exhibits featuring Oneida traditions, artistry and craftsmanship, including basketry, beadwork, wampum and more. Annual events include a spring craft fair

featuring Native vendors and Haudenosaunee social dances.

Today, the Oneida Indian Nation remains deeply rooted in its traditions and commitment to the ongoing revitalization of its culture. Its continued prosperity provides for a wide range of cultural and quality-oflife services for Members, while also creating employment opportunities for over 5,000 team members throughout Central New York.

Abolition M Road

adison County’s ties to the abolition movement run deep, and nowhere is that legacy more vividly preserved than in the hamlet of Peterboro and the village of Canastota. Peterboro, once home to prominent abolitionist Gerrit Smith, played a significant role in supporting freedom seekers traveling the Underground Railroad. Today, visitors can walk the same historic routes and explore sites that helped shape the fight for justice.

Each October, often during New York State’s Path Through History Weekend, the community hosts the annual Abolition Walk, guiding participants along key locations connected to local antislavery efforts.
