This report looks to present an in-depth analysis of the past and current scenario of George Town, Chennai through a detailed timeline comprising of the key administrative, religious, social, economic and transportation changes. The current period mapping provides us with an understanding of the hotspots of activity, the major people-time based flux in a widespread fabric. With each spike, the social-everyday local pattern of activity was also perceived graphically with respect to key locations.
The relevance of the rich history of this part of the city was questioned with respect to the upcoming metro proposal adjacent to the High Court Complex.
Throughout our study, we saw that the cultural stories and art forms were rooted in the old Madras region, yet the fabric of the settlement as it has come to be used till date severely lacks any such spaces that can help reach the same out to the people. The study attempts to provide a solution to the same through urban design interventions.
