We asked some of our contributors about their goals for 2017. Kirsty Nicholl

Happy New Year everyone!!

My personal goal is to learn some more skills professionally, to make me more efficient and accomplished as a work-at-home mum.

Dawn Geddes

To be more organised, especially when it comes to my kids. I’m currently drowning in a sea of party invites, permission slips and school information. I must try and put it all into some sort of order.

Jojo Sutherland

I have 10 goals. Travel to U.S.A. Come back from U.S.A. Attempt a level of fitness that goes beyond lifting a glass to my mouth. Spend more time with my family. Spend less time arguing with my family. Learn a language. Spend less time on Facebook. Go to Wimbledon. Learn how to use Google calendar. Have fun.

I hope you all had a wonderful festive period with family and friends, and are ready to get 2017 off to a brilliant start! Have you set any goals this year? My missions are to decorate every room of our new house, do some form of charity challenge (I ticked the Moon Walk off my list last year) and organise my sons’ birthday parties in plenty of time for once! Thankfully this special party edition will help with the last one! Feel free to challenge me on these goals as the year progresses - I might need the nudge. Have an awesome 2017.

Time to change the

dialogue about birth On the third Sunday of each month, a flurry of pregnant women, their partners and children turn up at Babies and Bumps Café in Morningside to talk about birth - a totally different view of birth and the dialogue around it. Three Edinburgh mums and local business women run this busy Positive Birth Movement group, a group that is part of a global network that spread a positive message about birth. Each month focuses on a different topic, although there’s always a similar theme throughout. More details can be found from

Montessori Mornings’ Monday and Thursday classes are going strong so they’ve now added Tuesdays in Stockbridge and welcomed a third Montessori-qualified guide, Holly. Children choose freely from any curriculum area and round off the experience with art, singing and their own snack table. Everything is designed for the needs and interests of under-6s, such as pouring, locks and keys, scissors – because little ones love real things. Given choices, children really engage in their play, which helps their concentration and control. Parents who come regularly really begin to see the value of the Montessori approach. Tiny dancers from age 2 are introduced to musical movement along with a participating adult (mum, dad, granny, carer everyone’s welcome) at this fun, friendly class. Sessions are drop-in so no pre-booking or term commitment, just come along and join in. Tutus are provided. This class is also great for older pre-school children who still enjoy parental support or those learning English as a second language. Pay on the day or multi class discount.

Development Through Drama

In these days of social networking, texts and emails, children and young people are more likely to connect with each other electronically. Helen O’Grady drama classes help students enjoy the ability to communicate verbally. A well thought out, structured drama programme allows each student to be involved in something positive and successful. The varied curriculum, which includes speech, movement, script work, improvisations and theatre productions, is constantly revised and updated. Classes are great fun and non-competitive ensuring each child is a ‘star’. With the older age groups, drama allows students to express their own ideas and share these with their peers.

Mum’s New World WRITTEN BY Kirsty

’ve just had an incredibly frustrating afternoon. I managed to get across town for a baby massage class but wasn’t able to park. I don’t think Tom really minded that his massage turned into a ninety minute sightseeing tour of Edinburgh, but I was annoyed that what should have been a chilled-out experience became so stressful. As I drove in ever increasing circles and then started home again, furious and feeling like an absolute failure, it occurred to me that things that are designed to make life more manageable so often make it more tricky. Take play cafés as an example. They have been an absolute godsend to me since I became a mum-of-two. It’s a luxury to have both boys within my line of vision while drinking a stillhot cup of coffee and holding an entire conversation with another adult. It makes me feel that I’m actually coping. But throw an un-gated baby zone into the mix, and a play café can become the stuff of actual nightmares. I’m that parent who’s darting backward and forward like a distressed meerkat, making sure that one son doesn’t career over a newborn with his shopping trolley while her other tiny bundle is being force fed grapes by an overzealous but well-meaning 4-year-old. Jack growing out of his shoes normally induces an inward groan and a hasty glance at the bank balance, but this time the news will be cheered with a roar of relief. Granted, Velcro can be really handy; cold hands and tiny buttons do not make happy bed fellows. But then neither do Velcro and toddler shoes. The ripping sound of Velcro strips being torn apart is enough to send me into a cold sweat. It’s normally in the car - when I’ve left us minus ten minutes to reach our destination – or in the supermarket, when I’m struggling to remember who I am, let alone what I’d planned

to cook for tea. Then off come Jack’s shoes, followed closely by his socks, trailing behind us down the aisle. Thank goodness for that piece of fruit that Tesco offers to its young customers. Bravo that supermarket. Sometimes I can whizz around the whole shop in the time it takes for Jack to munch on an apple. I’m sure the corporation’s aim wasn’t to provide fruit to distract a little boy in Edinburgh from removing his footwear, but it certainly makes a Nicholls supermarket visit a lot more wholesome. Oh, and don’t get me started on anti-colic bottles. I salute anyone who is able to successfully put the lid onto and shake a bottle of formula made in one of those monstrosities. Little Tom may have a less windy tum-tum, but mummy isn’t much use to him with second degree burns from elbow to fingertip. I’ll save you from my toilet-seat-lock-woes. They may stop Thomas the Tank Engine blocking the pipes, but it’s suffice to say that toilet locks plus weakened pelvic floor muscles do not equal a happy mummy. n

I’m that parent who’s darting backward and forward like a distressed meerkat

If you go down to the woods today…

Taking the kids away for a weekend camping can be a daunting prospect for a lot of parents, especially in Scotland where the weather can be less than predictable. But camping isn’t a chore at five-star exclusive-use venue, Dundas Castle, with its recent introduction of ‘glamping’ in luxury canvas cottages.

undas Castle is just 15 minutes from Edinburgh’s city centre but despite its proximity to the hustle and bustle of the capital, the estate offers a wonderful combination of tranquillity and activity – ideal for families seeking a wee adventure. Glamping at Dundas Castle has proved a real hit with families wanting to enjoy the great outdoors, but with the comforts of home. The glamping site is set on the shores of a private loch teeming with wildlife. Each canvas cottage is located on its own grassy knoll, surrounded by woods giving privacy and seclusion from other glampers – a far cry from the traditional camp site!

From start to finish your needs will be met as the luxury glamping site is fully equipped. Each canvas cottage benefits from its own en-suite bathroom, hardwood floor, bespoke furniture, wood burning stove and well-equipped kitchen cupboard – just like home but with camping fun! The en-suite bathrooms have an eco-friendly composting toilet, a sink and shower both with hot and cold running water. Meanwhile, getting a comfortable night’s sleep is not a worry in the king size bed, dressed with luxury Egyptian cotton bedding and soft pillows. Camp beds are provided for the little ones and each unit can accommodate up to two adults and two children. And with luxury hampers available to order,

home comforts need not be far away. The luxury tents each feature a private dining deck with a gas powered BBQ, patio heater, large parasol and rattan bistro dining set with comfy cushioned chairs in which to relax and enjoy the delightfully tranquil surroundings, while children can explore the woods and paths nearby. Solar lighting will keep you lit at night and a USB charger ensures you can keep your devices charged and ready for use if you want to stay connected to the outside world – though for many visitors, it is the getaway feel that is the attraction. Dundas Castle sits within 400 acres of land with plenty of countryside and wildlife for children to explore. Guests can roam freely around the estate and enjoy the beautiful woodland walks. Glampotel Dundas Castle has a pet friendly canvas cottage too, and with plenty options for walks around the estate, it’s also a perfect weekend away for your furry friends. Gamekeeper Andy is on hand to show visitors round the estate if they would like to arrange an informative tour- focusing on wildlife and estate facts that the kids will love. made JAN / FEB 2017

Nearby South Queensferry also offers a fun day out with lots of nice cafes and a local museum, or take a walk across the Forth Road Bridge to North Queensferry and the Deep Sea World, Scotland’s National Aquarium. Close by is also Craigie’s Farm & Shop, where children can pick their own fruit, become nature detectives and enjoy the outdoor kids’ area. The location is brilliant if you’re looking for a weekend with the best of both worlds - city and countryside. Glamping at Dundas Castle is only 20 minutes’ drive from Edinburgh, with all its five star attractions to hand. Why not enjoy a taste of freedom and luxury, right on your doorstep. Glamping at Dundas Castle begins in April but early bookings are advised, especially over the busy half-term period. If you go down to the woods today, might you be surprised? n

Everyday Happy About the book ‘Everyday Happy, a journal for happiness’, is what it says on the cover! A daily reminder that the things we do, think and say have a direct impact on our happiness. Written by Emma O’Connor after her 9 year old son fell into serious anxiety, Everyday Happy brings together the best information and tools that she used to help him recover. A simple and accessible tool, it is designed to encourage living your best life. It will help you to see and celebrate the positives, and to manage the negatives if, and when they show up. More than just a happiness journal, Everyday Happy is a practical guide that will grab your hand and walk with you through 365 happy days! About the Author Emma O’Connor is an Aussie in Edinburgh, mother of 2 not so little boys, wife of a chef and an author by accident. She has recently started Happiness Now an organisation designed to support other families struggling with anxiety, and has written Everyday Happy as part of her mission. Emma is a budding advocate for children’s mental health, and hopes to help prevent childhood anxiety through her ‘everyday happy’ message. In her ‘day job’ Emma teaches swimming to humans of all ages from the very young to the young at heart. Why be Happy? (excerpt) Well, there’s a good question! It is becoming accepted that the happier you are, the better your life will be. (Sounds obvious I know...) Dr Christine Carter the Author of Raising Happiness (2011) says happy people are ‘more successful’ and also ‘tend to be healthier and live longer’. It turns out you can be more creative, intelligent, energetic, resilient, and have better friendships just from being happy! You’ll probably also end up ‘better able to

cope with stress, challenge and negative emotions’ when they show up (more on that later). And all of this added together can lead to better career and financial prospects! In fact, learning how to be happy will empower you, and give you the confidence to follow your heart and become the person you really want to be!

otherhood can be pretty full on. From teething and tantrums to school bullying and homework struggles, sometimes it feels like there’s a never ending list of problems just waiting to be solved. Thankfully we’re all in the same boat. And meeting up with other mums to chat about our worries and parenting fails is a great way of working through our problems. It’s beneficial to our mental health and wellbeing too. But sadly not all of us are lucky enough to have parenting allies. Perhaps you work full time so miss dropping off and pick up time, making it harder to meet other mums at the school gates, or maybe you’re new to the area and are finding it difficult to make new friends. That’s what happened to me when we moved house a few years ago. I’d been so worried

that my daughter wouldn’t make new friends at nursery, I hadn’t even considered that it might be tricky for me to meet new people my own age. Putting myself out there to make new friends seemed like a scary prospect, but it was completely worth it. With a little bit of faith and courage, I found some lovely mummy mates to share my highs and lows with.

Be Open

When our children make new friends, they just run right over with a big smile and introduce themselves to their new prospective playmate. As we get older, many of us forget this skill and find it embarrassing or awkward to speak to new people. But to make new friends we’ve got to be open to meeting new people, otherwise

MUMMY NO-MATES how are other parents supposed to know that you’re a nice fun person, dying for a bit of adult conversation? When you’re out at the park or at the school gates smiling and making eye contact with people and show them that you’re friendly. Make a comment about the weather or chat about what you watched on TV last night – anything to get the conversation going. You’ll be amazed at how friendly people will be, once you make the first move.

Go Social

or plan a fundraising event for the school. Most mums will jump at the chance of a bit of a child free time and some adult conversation. Another way of connecting is through new social platform Classlist ( ww.schoolclasslist. com), the world’s first virtual school gate which offers parents a secure way of getting to know each other online. The site is a great way for parents to arrange get togethers, especially for shyer mums who might find it a bit awkward to suggest a meet up, face to face.

We often joke that our children have better social lives than us, but it doesn’t have to be that way. The role of being a parent comes with plenty of social opportunities - from maternity groups and parent and child classes, to school fundraisers and birthday parties. It really doesn’t matter what the event is, the important thing is to get out there and meet new people. Because lets fact it, you’re never going to make new friends sitting at home. Parenting events are the perfect place to meet new people as you are all gathered together for a common purpose. Strike up a conversation with the person next to you by asking a question about their son or daughter and before you know it, the conversation will be in full flow.

One of the easiest ways to make new friends is through your child’s own friends at playgroup, nursery or school. Make a point of chatting to your child’s friend’s mum at drop-off or pickup and mention how much your children enjoy playing together and ask if they’d like to bring them over sometime for a coffee and a playdate. Because you already have your children in common, you should have plenty to talk about and you might even manage to have a coffee in peace while your children play. For parents who miss the school and nursery run, try leaving a note for the other parent in their child’s nursery tray or school bag and invite them over that way instead.

From acquaintance to firm friend

To make new friends we’ve got to be open to meeting new people

In days gone by meeting new people and getting to know other mums was tricky if you didn’t see them every day. But thanks to the likes of parenting forums such as Mumsnet and social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp, we now have loads of opportunity to make new friends online. Look out for Facebook school and nursery groups that have been set up by other parents or create your own. These groups are great for connecting with other parents away from the school gates. By joining in you can get to know some of the mums virtually online before you take the plunge and ask them if they’d like to get together. Once you’ve exchanged messages a few times why not suggest that you all get together for a coffee one afternoon as a group, made JAN / FEB 2017

Making that leap from being casual school gate acquaintance to firm friends can seem tricky, but the only thing that you need to make that jump is a little bit of confidence. Invite your new chum to be Facebook friends or be bold and ask to swap numbers. Once you’re in regular contact with each other, meeting up and getting to know each other better, will come naturally. But if things don’t work out with the first mum you meet, don’t be disheartened. There are plenty of mummy friends in the sea! Finding a chum who will listen to your parenting war stories and makes you giggle on stressful days is definitely worth searching for. So stay open, be friendly and you never know, the next person you meet in the park, might just end up being your new mummy BFF. n

HAPPY NEW YEAR! – Well 2017, I reckon you can take a year off, as 2016 put in quite the shift as far as events were concerned, and frankly I think we all need to have a bit of a lie down! Given the amount I ate over the festive period, lying down is the most comfortable position I can find at the moment. As with every other year I am filled with good intentions and my new Fit-Bit will be amazing just as soon as I figure out how to use it. Although I’m not filled with optimism. Largely based on the fact that I struggle to operate the TV

remote control properly and I also don’t have a great history of maintaining my good intentions, as I’m sure the Wii fit (remember them?) will testify to, from its dusty box at the back of a cupboard somewhere. But this year will be different, I’ll lose 2 stone, grow an inch taller and have the face of an angel - no, you shut up! To be fair, 2016 wasn’t all bad, I visited some great places, met some fabulous people and in the summer I managed to wear a white dress and not spill red wine down the front – that in itself, makes me a winner!

Dear Jojo My 6 year old gets so upset and screams if I’m going out although the babysitter says he is fine as soon as I’ve gone – is there a way to stop him getting himself in such a state? Moira, Baberton Dear Moira Ah – the guilt trip special, to which I always advise, “Do a runner when he’s not looking!” If that seems too mean (which it probably is) then try getting him involved with helping you to get ready and ask him if he could be a star and look after things while you’re away and of course the good old bribery techniques usually do the trick. Whatever you choose – DO NOT FEEL GUILTY!

ant a New Year’s resolution to help burn off those mince pies, teach your baby a potentially lifesaving skill and get you both out and about and having fun? Whatever the weather, swimming still provides one of the best forms of exercise for both you and your baby, and is just as perfect for cold winter days as it is for hot summer ones. It’s never too early to take your baby to the pool – as long as the water’s warm enough. Water Babies teaches in warm water and hydrotherapy pools, which are just like stepping into a giant bath tub and perfect for new or premature babies. So how does Water Babies tick all those New Year’s resolution boxes?

Swimming is the only form of exercise your baby can do literally from birth! It provides a complete physical workout for them and parents often comment that their little ones eat and sleep better on swimming days. l The class is also a good

INTO 2017 workout for you – moving around the pool with plenty of water resistance is harder than you think, while bouncing your baby throughout the lesson does wonders for toning those arms! l Trying something new together – babies love the attention that time in the water allows, and the skinto-skin contact is fantastic for bonding with your baby. l Swimming is a potentially life-saving skill – and what better time to commit to learning a new one? Water Babies teaches you and your baby water safety from day one and you’ll be amazed what your little one will pick up in a matter of weeks. l Water Babies is a lovely social activity and a great

opportunity to get together and meet other new parents. Or why not go along with a friend? Water Babies lessons teach you to teach your baby to swim, so starting with a friend will give you both the perfect incentive to head to the pool together and practice. Established in Edinburgh for over 13 years, Water Babies offer fun, innovative baby swimming classes, taught by world-class instructors in warm water pools. Our multiaward winning programme is structured yet gentle; centred around the needs of each individual child. So, give your New Year a splashy start and call us to find out about our next term of Chapter 1 classes. n

Encouraging young cooks is recipe to stop food being binned

paghetti bolognese, scrambled eggs on toast and pancakes are named among the dishes that children should be able to cook by the age of 11, in a new study. The research suggests that teaching kids to cook could help solve the food wastage issue and highlights that children’s culinary skills are in sharp decline due to the rise of ready meals. The research found that children being fussy eaters and leaving food on their plate is among the top five causes of food wastage for UK households. Moreover, the findings reveal

that families throw away an average of £676 of food every year, equating to over a fifth (22%) of their total average food bill. Across a lifetime, this is over £18,000 per person lost on wasted food, or over £51,000 for the average UK household. The Samsung Family Hub™ Study surveyed 2,000 British parents – asking them to name the dishes they believed children should be able to cook by the age of 11, which were compiled from a list assembled by a panel of leading food, consumer and family lifestyle experts.

1. Spaghetti Bolognese 2. Scrambled egg on toast 3. Omelette 4. Jacket potato with baked beans 5. Cheese on toast 6. Cottage pie 7. Sausage and mash 8. Pasta bake 9. Stir fry 10. Porridge 11. do together as a family, but not going far for fear of jeopardising the transplant. Sadly, the day Jak was admitted to hospital his bloods showed his cancer was back with a vengeance and we were told Jak only had days. We went straight home and Jak spent his last ten days fulfilling his last wishes. Throughout his journey Jak always thought of others. He wanted to shave his hair before it fell out to raise money for Sick Kids Friends Foundation and raised £66,000 for Bloodwise research for lymphoma and other blood cancers. Jak was truly inspirational and brought many people together whilst encouraging people to get out and make the most of their lives. One of his big dreams was to set up a charity called Team Jak to support other young cancer sufferers and their families especially siblings as he felt that whilst the medical care was outstanding there was a gap with emotional and practical support for young people their sibling families and friends. He wanted to create a huge Jak’s Den which would be a purpose-built haven for children on

ak, (15) was fit, healthy, had a beautiful girlfriend, played in goals for his local football team, schools county team and played the tuba in his school band. He started feeling unwell in the summer of 2014 and was admitted two weeks later to Sick Kids Hospital Edinburgh. After a series of tests the consultant told us Jak had an extremely rare and aggressive form of Lymphoma, there was nothing they could do and the median was a year. Our world truly fell apart. The first three rounds of chemotherapy were awful; he suffered serious side-effects, which was hard to watch. He had to learn to walk again as his stint in ICU had made him seriously weak. After tests in October we were told Jak’s bone marrow was in remission, which was miraculous as it had gone from over 70% bad cells to less than 5. The next month it went down to 2%. This meant Jak could get a bone marrow transplant in order to try and cure or prolong his life. We got home end of November after another round of different chemo. After various scans, Jak’s stem-cell transplant was scheduled for January so we made the most of what we could

their cancer journey and beyond. It would be a place where families and friends could come to a safe, welcoming and clean environment away from the hospital or home to join counselling support groups, play music and enjoy alternative therapies. He also wanted it to have a neutropenic cafe where people could eat in a sterile and clean environment. Jak died peacefully on 2nd February 2015 having inspired thousands of people to support his cause and help raise money to build Jak’s Den, the big den. Jak’s Den Mark 1, which we opened 10mths after he died, is a mini Den where young cancer patients go for the day and receive counselling, music therapy or just have fun and relax with their family and friends, away from the hospital or the public and just be themselves. This has given myself and my daughter, Aimie, a purpose, and is great for us to know that his made JAN / FEB 2017

legacy will continue through the charity. It’s going to cost £3.3million to build the ‘big den’ but we will do it through intensive fundraising, grant applications and hopefully sponsorship from large companies and people who believe in the cause. Our next big event is Jak’s Ball which takes place in the luxurious Dalmahoy Hotel and Country Club, Edinburgh on Saturday 25th February 7pm-1am. Tickets cost £65 per person or £650 per table and includes welcome fizz, 3 course meal plus wine or beer, entertainment, charity auction and prize draw hosted by a local celebrity. n

ON TRIAL... Sissie In this edition we spoke with Edinburgh mum, Jerri, about Slissie the successful habit-changing diet aid which is helping women everywhere lose weight. Jerri says: I make cakes for a living, and am tempted by sweet treats on a daily basis. I have tried many diets over the years, and while some were successful in helping me lose weight, I always jumped back up a dress size after a while. Nothing else kept the weight off. The problem was that snacking was my natural habit. It was this snacking habit I needed to break. And that’s why, for me, Slissie works an absolute treat. I use Slissie whenever I would usually want to snack. It delivers a burst of appetite suppressing flavour, which curbs my crave immediately and stops me indulging in cake. If I feel another craving coming on 20 minutes later I just do the same - I use my Slissie and carry on with what I’m doing. I can go days without any of the snacks and cakes I used to eat. Slissie helped make not snacking become my new habit! I’ve lost 10lbs and I’ve kept it off for 6 months now. I feel fantastic! Slissie comes in different flavours so you can pick whichever suits you best - mint, fruit and even chocolate. They are all delicious but the mint is my favourite. Slissie is small and easy to use, so I can just carry it around all day in my pocket or handbag and it’s always on hand when I need it most.

The verdict: I would absolutely recommend Slissie to anyone who is trying to lose weight. It complements any dieting clubs like Weight Watchers or Slimming World, and is such a handy little device to carry around with you. It’s the tastiest way to stop snacking, and the best way to lose weight. For more information and to order your own Slissie go to
