MADELYN ALFORD

A B O U T M E

My name is Madelyn Alford and I am a 3rd year student at Texas Tech University. I am currently pursing a major in Interior Design, along with getting a minor in General Business and Restaurant, Hotel, and Institutional Management. My pursuit for design has stemmed from a young age. With being exposed to architecture and construction through my father, I have always had the desire to create. While studying, this passion has only grown. My eyes have been opened to the beauty and complexity this career entails. With my strong work ethic and dedication, I design with intent, and differing ideas to projects. Interior Design has given me a unique and creative career and I only hope that I provide meaningful designs to others. My goal is to be able to giveback to the community, such as this career/major has given to me. Within this portfolio, I have provided ideas, sketches, and projects that I have created from the past 3 years.

THOUSANDOAKSRESORT

A BOUTIQUE WINERY AND RESORT

HOSPITALITY PROJECT SPRING 2024

REVIT AND ENSCAPE

Located in Oregon, Willamette Valley is the home to roaring hills, streaming rivers, and abundant mountain ranges. Stretching for 150 miles long and 60 miles wide, this valley is the home of a boutique resort, hosting 40 guest cottages, a winery, as well as other amenities to properly host and satisfy visitors. Upon arrival, guests were provided complimentary parking throughout their entire stay and were welcomed by beautiful scenery that accompanied the resort. The layout of the resort was divided, with the guest cottages on one side and the public amenities on the other, all connected by pathways. The public complex hosted a winery, restaurant, bar, and a venue to satisfy the guests' wants and needs. On the other side of the resort, there was an abundance of guest cottages to accommodate a wide range of individuals. This area was more secluded to offer privacy and tranquility for guests.

Smooth, easily accessible walkways were built to provide transportation between all the buildings Throughout these walkways, and in between the two main areas and cottages, an outdoor space was provided for guests to enjoy the scenery and get some fresh air. This resort was to be guests' home away from home.

The Thousand Oaks Resort's design emulated the natural scenery of Willamette Valley, drawing inspiration from its lush landscapes. Incorporating hues of green and earth tones, the resort seamlessly blended with its surroundings.

Textural elements like stucco walls and stone accents embraced the rugged beauty of the valley. A contemporary interpretation of western style, infused with subtle adobe influences, immolated the spaces with both refinement and tranquility. This design style paid homage to Willamette Valley's rich cultural heritage, honoring the indigenous communities that once flourished on this land.

LIVE/WORK MODULAR HOME

RESIDENTIAL PROJECT FALL 2022

HAND DRAFTED AND RENDERED

A couple, both in their mid-30s, lived a sustainable lifestyle in all aspects. One client was a self-made Navajo textile artist, while the other was a photojournalist who worked for the local newspaper. Due to the pandemic, work and home life had become entangled, and the couple was looking for a way to improve that situation but still maintain the work/home environment. The couple moved into a modular home that acted as both a public-facing area as well as a private living area. There was an equal amount of space for both the residential and workspace, but they did not mix in any way. This home also showcased the Navajo culture. The self-made Navajo textile artist was very proud of her culture and showcased it to share the history and raise awareness of the indigenous people within the Americas. This home hosted a multitude of people, in both the work and living areas, as well as plenty of storage for all their required items. Both areas had all the necessary rooms to ensure this couple could function successfully in both personal and work life.

A MULTIPURPOSE SPACE

COMMERCIAL PROJECT FALL 2023

REVIT AND ENSCAPE

Incorporating three spaces into one, Charleston, South Carolina was the home and inspiration for this multifunctional building. The first floor incorporated a cafe along with an art supply store; these two businesses needed to be designed to be functional and seamless within each other, merging the two businesses into one. The second floor was a designated coworking space, and showcased all that Charleston had to offer. It had a studio for all types of artists and designers, along with offices so everyone, of all creative talents, had a chance to utilize the space. This building embraced Charleston’s history and architecture through its design, making it seem that this building and its businesses had been in the city from the start.

harleston is a city filled with historic charm. ith its colonial style in all aspects it maintains s older beauty, but as Charleston grows, specially with this up and coming art district, it ces the fear of losing that charm. Incorporating ese new ideas, with the older elements of harleston, is key. Emphasizing the new and erging it with the old; a seamless transition etween these two differing times. Its warm blue olors will not only be representative of the ties location, but will be accompanied by rich ark bronze accents. BEHIND THE SKETCHES

When putting my designs and ideas together for this project, I wanted to provide unique and intricate pieces that fit the colonial style that was present throughout all of the spaces. It was important to me to be able to accurately portray the custom built ins. After doing research and drawing out a multitude of ideas, I decided that I wanted each piece to be simple but elegant. Each piece is made out of a dark wood, and has detailing on all its surfaces. This detailing includes wood rectangular paneling, with a simple design within it. Each piece also has trim on both the bottom and top of the built in. When designing these, I didn't want it to be overwhelming but I also didn't want it to be bland.
