Lesson Daily Steps Day 1: - Show Powerpoint & Youtube video introducing Basquiat. Go over symbolism, abstract, and blind contour portrait - Do some close looking at a Basquiat piece, ask students what symbols they can find - Do a blind contour drawing demonstration - Have students practice doing their own blind contour portraits of themselves (tell them to pin their own video so it’s the biggest) Do many of these, as they are practice for the final portrait Day 2: - Start to brainstorm words that you identify with, could be descriptive words or things you enjoy doing. Make a list of these words in your sketchbook - Consider symbols that could represent you. You can make a list of these symbols as well - Start final drawing on drawing paper, use a crayon or marker to do your blind contour drawing - Try to make it fill the whole page Day 3: - Continue working on Basquiat portraits, they should be finished today - Add at least two symbols and two words onto portrait, but more are encouraged - Use oil pastels to add lots of color and lines, the messier the better!
