Portman Competition Studio Honorable Mention Charles Rudolph Project Partner: Carol Mock Software: Rhino, Revit, Lumion This Portman Competition Studio was a research-based project in which students found their own sites and developed programs based on the area’s needs.

Through extensive research of Atlanta’s poor public education systems and water infrastructure pollution, my partner and I found a site along Proctor Creek in West Atlanta. We designed a campus that would provide assistance to families in the nearby neighborhoods and support the adjacent elementary school. Because Proctor Creek divides affluent and impoverished areas, it is an ideal location for investment in education and clean water. Our twogenerational educational facility offers free preschool for children age 0-5 while their parent(s) attend career courses. The campus filters polluted water and houses pedagogical and community resources.

Everything in our design centers on ecology and water.

The 2023 Portman Competition Studio was led by Kai Uwe-Bergman of Bjarke Ingels Group.

career center Our design includes three buildings: a career center, community center, and preschool. The career center connects parents to educational resources, such as career development courses, college classes, tuition support, etc. while their children attend preschool and daycare for free.

This system prioritizes the needs of families who would not be able to advance their careers without affordable or free childcare. By educating both parents and children simultaneously, families have to make fewer sacrifices and communities become stronger. A very successful model of this exists in Mechanicsville, Atlanta, in the Dunbar Learning Complex.

Beneath the classrooms of the Career Center, we designed a run-of-the-river system that removes garbage and pollutants from Proctor Creek. Some of the clean creek water is pumped through the site to a splash pad. The river system also generates electricity to power part of the site.

A hydraulic lift takes the garbage to the curbside for trash pickup.

community center As the cleaned creek water is pumped through the site, it follows a walkable “creek” to a splash pad in the Community Center. This center includes a large pavilion and ampitheater, restrooms and gathering spaces. Solar panels on the roof provide the rest of the electricity needed for the site. Surrounding the community center are rain gardens that protect native habitats and absorb creek overflow and rainwater.

preschool Following the walkable creek past the community center is the daycare and preschool that educates children ages 0-5 for free while their parents are enrolled in classes. The classrooms are arranged in a way that each room has direct access to a protected outdoor play area and an indoor play area. The indoor playrooms are designed to teach students interactively about native plants, water, animals, and green living. Through hands-on activities, the kids become closely connected to their environments and well-prepared to attend the elementary school on the other side of the creek.

Reforming the Urban Farm Advanced 1 Studio Kim Steiner

Software: Rhino, Grasshopper, Lumion The Peoplestown neighborhood in Atlanta is considered a food desert, meaning there are no grocery stores within a 1-mile walking radius. This studio addresses this food crisis by designing an urban farm and park along a portion of the beltline, thus creating access to food and community space. My urban farm is based on traditional native american crops and includes a cultural center. The “Three Sisters” planting system is a symbiotic relationship between maize, beans, and squash.

The maize stalks act as supports for the beans to grow up.

While maize consumes nitrogen in the soil, the beans replenish nitrogen stores in the ground.

The squash’s broad leaves cover the ground, retaining moisture and protecting against insects and weeds.

There are two field types: farm and forage. The farming fields include the Three Sisters crops, while the foraging fields include crops that visitors can forage for themselves.

The foraging fields are planted in aeroponic towers, mimicking the forests they traditionally grow in, but with more efficiency, density, and nutrients.

Lantern: Flourishing Communities Collaborative Julie Kim

Project Partners: Amal Bogoreh, Tae Jang, Rohan Joshi, Charles Kim, Kailey O’Connor, Karen Tran, Joel White Software: Rhino and Lumion Julie Kim established a research and service group of professionals and students called Flourishing Communities Collaborative. Its objective is to “build relationships between students, faculty, practitioners, and the community in applied design thinking and problem-solving for underserved communities.” (https://fc2.design.gatech.edu/) In Spring 2023, Flourishing Communities held an elective funded by a grant to design a mobile learning lab that would visit underserved neighborhoods to give people a place to gather as a community to learn about home improvements, career development, garden care, and provide a vaccine clinic.

Since this semester, the Flourishing Communities team completed Design Development documentation and partial Construction Documentation. The team is now working on permitting.

Invisible Cities: Elevitra Design + Research Studio David Yocum

Software: Hand drawings, Models, Rhino, Lumion This studio began by documenting each city in Italo Calvino’s poetic book, Invisible Cities. Each student completed four cities’ drawings, drew a section through another student’s drawing, and then built a minimum Z3’ tall model based on the section.

Following the Invisible Cities study, we researched areas of Atlanta that were erased. These included deforestation, houses torn down to build the freeways, neighborhoods burned in the 1917 Great Fire, areas removed for public housing projects, changes for the 1996 Olympic Games, etc. As a class, we developed a map showing those erasures and built abstract models representing the erasures.

For my final project in this studio, I designed a high-rise tower “Elevitra” to bring a much needed grocery store, pharmacy, and urgent care to the area with residential above. As Jane Jacobs said in “The Death and Life of Great American Cities,” a neighborhood flourishes with “eyes on the street.” A group of four of us designed our projects around Woodruff Park bringing energy back to a once thriving Atlanta downtown.

Atlanta erasures map Paired into small groups, we researched a specific form of erasure in Atlanta. My partner and I researched the history of deforestation in Atlanta and how it impacts neighborhoods differently. Our digital and physical maps show areas of dense tree coverage in green with lowest tree cover in black. The physical model of the map was about 7’ x 7’.

part 3 Based on the class’s collective research on Atlanta erasures, I selected a site near Woodruff Park in Downtown Atlanta and designed homes in a tower that connect to a grocery store and health services.

Inspired by calvino’s invisible city, Leandra, where gods stroll and quarrel on radiator pipes, hiding in coat closets and dusty pots, weaving their lives through the crevices in walls; where the old daydream of their kid’s careers and comment on the weather, where the young explore, imagining the future of the neighborhood, all “murmuring steadily, interrupting one another, huffing, bantering, amid ironic, stifled laughter;” from this vision of contentedly passing through walls and strolling through life emerges Elevitra, who exists for the family, who invites children into the city’s playground, whose walls elevate homes into the sky. Elevitra’s beauty lies in the tangles of life, where errands and misplaced keys are ordinary, where messes and spills lead to picnics in the backyard, where families interrupt, banter, and laugh through evenings on the porch. Elevitra’s movement mimics the gods of leandra, climbing down twisted anthills and meandering up building facades and staircases. Each family lives in a home and has birthday parties in the backyard, they take their dogs to the park in the morning and watch their kids on the playground. Their neighborhoods are connected to one another vertically, with block parties down the stairs instead of down the street. Elevitra is home.

Core 2 Studio Keith Kaseman + Marco Ancheita Software: Rhino The Hulsey Yard is a CSX rail yard between two MARTA stops by Inman Park in Atlanta. Part of the Beltline runs along the perimeter. The railyard is surrounded by 12’ concrete walls that divide the neighborhoods on either side. To bring the neighborhoods back together, this project proposes a massive arts center to fill the entire site with graffiti galleries, hip hop halls, light displays, theater, sculpture, sports, and myriad other art forms. Removing the concrete walls invites the community to connect in the new arts center.

Core 3 Studio Marco Ancheita + Zhan Chen Project Partner: Kailey Brown Software: Rhino and Lumion Summerhill is a small neighborhood in Atlanta, south of I-20. This studio project uses housing to reunite communities that were once divided. This apartment complex provides needed housing for the area, while creating community space to bring people together.

Nearby houses inspired the design. We wanted the complex to feel as comfortable as a house, with the amenities of living in an apartment complex, creating a new type of neighborhood within the neighborhood.

We stacked units in way that the roof of one unit becomes the porch of another unit, while also keeping space between neighbors so units feel like the houses in the area. Central community spaces serve the neighborhood with a market, restaurants, library, and fitness center.

Piedmont Park Pavilion Media + Modeling II Lena Klein

Project Partner: Justin Liu Software: Grasshopper Using only Grasshopper scripting, Justin and I designed a pavilion for Piedmont Park in the center of Atlanta. The structure is a hexagonal grid of steel supporting a volumetric glass panel facade that follows the hexagonal grid of the supports.

The hexagons are scaled based on the undulation of the pavilion shape. The methods used to make this project are called tiling.

Learning Equity with Danielle Willkens

For an independent study, I conducted a research project under the advisement of Danielle Willkens. I studied the experiences of women at the Georgia Tech School of Architecture, both as students and faculty.

My portfolio highlights a few pages from my research project. Here is my abstract: This research paper investigates the experiences of women in the School of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Through data analysis, interviews, and literature study, this research explores the challenges that women have encountered for years both as students and as faculty. The primary objectives of this research are to understand the representation of women, assess the extent of gender-related support, and propose recommendations for improving equity within the School of Architecture.

Data analysis reveals that women constitute a larger proportion of the student body than men.

However, this trend does not translate to faculty representation, as the majority of faculty are male.

Interviews with students, faculty members, and alumni shed light on the experiences and perceptions of women within the School of Architecture. During interviews, students indicated that they want to learn from a diverse group of professors and jurors. Many students mentioned a desire to learn more about women’s impacts in architecture. In interviews with faculty, women noted barriers to earning tenure and teaching advanced courses.

The findings of this study underscore a significant gender disparity in the composition of the

architecture faculty at Georgia Tech. While women constitute a growing portion of the student body, their success is hindered by a lack of female role models and mentors among faculty and review jurors. These imbalances negatively impact all students’ (female and male) learning and prevent everyone, both students and faculty, from succeeding. Consequently, the paper concludes that the institution should prioritize efforts to hire and retain more women in positions of power, who can then provide diverse perspectives and support for students and other faculty. As the faculty expands to include more women, they need to know their talents are needed and see opportunities to develop their careers. The School has significant room for growth in learning equity.

Although this research ends at the School of Architecture, studying the overlaps with the profession would be valuable information. The confluence of school and practice happens often.

For example, students graduate, then later return as jurors or professors. Many professors maintain full-time careers in architecture, teaching only parttime. The ebbs and flows of people at the School of Architecture connect theory to practice. Knowing where women need support in both places improves their experiences everywhere.

Compared to the national averages for student enrollment, Georgia Tech’s students are a few years ahead of the trend for increasing women in the student bodies, and historically are closer to a 50/50 split by gender.⁸ As the student body becomes more female, the School of Architecture needs to be prepared to support and empower its students.

What could that support look like? What causes the demographic change? What does this

mean for the students? For the faculty? For the school? Although the scope of this report cannot answer every question, these are important considerations and should be researched further.

The Georgia Tech enrollment numbers include B.S. Arch and M.Arch students, while the national averages come from NAAB data, which include B.Arch, B.S.Arch, M.Arch, and PhD students.

The graphic above shows that there are only 3 male students per male professor, while there are 8 female students per female professor.²¹ The uneven split in both professor and student demographics puts more mentoring pressure on female professors than male professors. Women already experience higher demands on their time in academia because of their involvement in event planning, student organization leadership, being the “token female” on juries, and serving at higher levels within the College and Institute. For example, women faculty advise all four of the student

orgs for architecture students. With the added pressure of mentoring even more students, it’s no wonder that women in academia burnout quicker and more often than men.²²

Hire more women.

The quickest and most impactful way to improve equity for women at the School of Architecture is to hire more women to positions of power and security (not just adjunct or part-time). Women hired need to know their jobs are both stable and important. More women means diverse experiences to share in studios and reviews, more mentorship and support for students, and better standing with NAAB accreditation. More women also means greater community and support amongst female faculty. This is the research area that showed the biggest disparity in men and women.

Diversify juries.

Requiring diverse juries will make a big impact on student learning and confidence. Living in a city like Atlanta leaves little room for excuses when it comes to jury diversity. The issue is not the lack of diversity in architecture, but the lack of connection (and sometimes effort) between professors and potential jurors. While creating diverse juries might be a challenge for some professors, it is not an excuse. Even when professors do find a diverse group for a jury, it’s another hurdle to convince jurors to sacrifice a half or a full day of work to attend reviews.

One solution could be talking directly with local architecture firms to get lists of employees who would like to volunteer on juries. Another solution could be offering pay, AXP hours, or Continuing Education courses in exchange for time on juries.

Support women guests.

Often guest jurors or panelists are the only woman in a group of men. What happens when she does not want to be a token female? Is there support for a woman to leave if she is the only female present, or is there backlash for being “picky?” A study done at Brigham Young University found that women participate far less in groups when they are the only female.³³ Even if a woman is present for a review or a lecture, she will say less and be interrupted more because of the amount of men around her. In other words, “having a seat at the table does not mean having a voice.”

Design Competition Model Perkins&Will Higher Education Studio

Software: Revit, Rhino, Laser Cutters, 3D Printers Built under the supervision of Architect Joel Jassu and Senior Designer Jonathan Aprati During the summer of 2023, a colleague, Breck Small, and I built a large site model for a design competition and project pursuit. A large team of architects led the design while Joel Jassu and Jonathan Aprati advised us on the model. Because the design team developed two options for the competition, we built the model in a way that the options acted as interchangeable plugs in the site. We built this model by laser cutting and painting the parcels, and modeling and 3D printing the site buildings.

We modified the two competition designs for 3D printers and printed those as well.

Emory Cox Dining Hall Perkins&Will Higher Education Studio

Punch list with Architects Jennifer Ingram and Ryan Horgan Near the end of construction, I spent two days visiting the site of Emory Cox Dining Hall, a remodel on Emory Univeristy Campus. With my team, I submitted various items for review on the punch list both interior and exterior.

The Lovett School Cooper Carry Higher Education Studio

Software: Revit and Enscape Done under the supervision of licensed architect, Brian Campa During the summer of 2022, I worked on Schematic Design for a redesign of one of the main buildings at the Lovett School, a private K-12 in Vinings, Georgia. Architect Brian Campa was the main designer and another intern, Harry Dunavant, worked with me on the renderings. My role as an intern was to model the architectural massing of the building in Revit, including walls, custom curtain wall systems, windows, roofs, floors, stairs, balconies, columns, sidewalks, etc. I linked the as-built model from a contracted firm to the new model I created. From the models, I put together schematic floor plans and renders.

For this project, I studied the shapes and shadows made by lichen. Lichen is a relationship between fungi and algae: the fungi creates moist environments for the algae to grow and in return, the algae feeds the fungi.
