PHILOSOPHY AND APPROACH

Madeleine Blanchfield Architects is distinguished by its refined, pared back aesthetic and seamless expression of architecture and interiors. We retain a consistent focus on light, volume and capturing a sense of the unexpected.

The integration of landscape is evident in our houses and apartments which are remarkable but not ostentatious. Our designs harmonise with their natural settings to create an unwavering sense of belonging.

We are lovers of light and simplicity, and this is reflected in the atmosphere of our designs. Beyond this we treat each project as an opportunity to showcase the client’s personality and character.

Every project begins with the site itself. We immerse ourselves in understanding its unique attributes and constraints. Through meticulous planning and comprehensive threedimensional modelling, we transform concepts into reality. This methodical approach enables us to refine proportions, optimise positioning, perfect sightlines, and craft layouts that feel intuitively purposeful. Working alongside expert consultants, we create a comprehensive planning strategy that establishes the site’s best building envelope against which we test your specific brief and requirements.

From day one, you’ll experience your project in three dimensions, watching as it transforms into a series of light-filled, serene, and engaging spaces. This design approach ensures that the architecture does not override or compromise the spaces within. The building’s expression is derived from the sun, other environmental factors and how the spaces will be lived in, curated to become a beautiful composition with the landscape and interiors.

COMPANY PROFILE

Madeleine Blanchfield Architects delivers bespoke architecture and interior design services, creating everything from renovated and new build houses to large-scale developments.

Our portfolio spans from Sydney to Fiji and Perth, with work that is widely awarded and published.

As a focused studio of eleven architects and interior designers, we offer a personalised service. Every project receives the direct attention of Madeleine, ensuring your vision is understood, refined, and beautifully realised.

We obsess over scale and light. Every proportion is deliberate, every detail considered, every material choice intentional—together, these elements form our refined architectural language. We embrace new technologies and systems and build proven sustainable principles into the core of our designs.

We fundamentally believe that beautiful spaces can also be flexible and functional, and we create honest, clear designs through diligent analysis, exploration and attention to detail. We create homes that are bold, luminous and elevate the spirit.

HOW WE WORK

As Lead Architect and Interior Designer, I oversee every project working with a carefully curated team of eleven architects and our Practice Manager. Each individual is carefully selected, highly skilled and brings something unique to the studio — most have worked with me for several years.

We deliberately limit our practice to twelve people and actively turn down work to ensure we can give the required attention to every project. This intimate scale allows for the collaborative, hands-on approach that defines our work.

When we begin a new project, we meet with the client to understand the brief and vision. I work closely with the Project Architect, whom I allocate based on who I see as the best fit for your project. This architect becomes your primary point of contact throughout the entire process—from initial concept to final completion, and their input is invaluable. They are always available to work through details with the builder and have an in-depth knowledge of every detail of the project. The Project Architect produces the drawings, does the technical work, and oversees other members of the team if required on larger developments. They will be in all design meetings and work with me on the finer aspects of the design.

While we draw on our broader team’s expertise, particularly for interiors and technical specialties, the core partnership between me and your Project Architect ensures clear accountability and the best outcome. We approach every project with a fresh perspective, ensuring the entire team enjoys a positive, collaborative experience.

Our architecture is executed with precision, care and conviction resulting in buildings and spaces that deliver calm, joyful, and spirited experiences.

“The design gently amplifies the home’s heritage, introducing light and a seamless flow between past and present. The result is a home that feels profoundly serene, effortlessly functional, and deeply connected to its lineage. A space of tranquillity and beauty —one we find utterly mesmerising and never wish to leave.”

“MBA have designed a versatile home that adapts through the day and year to enhance our lives.

Some days it’s a calm, urban retreat from the busy the city outside that we love so much. Other days, it’s a practical place where we work and enjoy spending time with our family and friends.

We love how the light changes, bright and uplifting in the morning becoming dark and moody in the evening. The mix of heritage and contemporary architecture and choice of materials makes the space feel soft and warm yet practical and functional.”

“The design provides our family a calm retreat from the hectic outside world. We benefit from light and air streaming in and a sense of living areas integrating seamlessly with outdoor spaces and gardens.

We finally have a space which allows us precious time together, but clever design means an area can be closed for moments of much needed solitude.

One of the best benefits is that the living area transforms into the perfect entertainment space so our family and friends can enjoy some time relaxing while watching the kids play and swim in the backyard.”

Flipping the layout initially felt challenging but this bold design supports the natural rhythms of our beach-side days. Upstairs, we live expansively by the sun, overlooking the trees and flooded by natural light. The central courtyard provides space and depth between living areas and we feel connected through the layers of glass even when engaged in our different activities. In the evening we retreat downstairs where it is more protected and cosier.

Amongst the bustle of Bondi, our home feels like a sanctuary where the boundaries between inside and out are blurred by luscious greenery. We couldn’t be happier..

Originally a dark 1930’s heritage-listed bungalow. Now a light-filled, tranquil home of marvel. Our brief was to enhance natural light and maintain privacy. Opening up the back of our home has allowed light to filter through floor-to-ceiling, steel-framed glass doors. An orchestra of light and shadow playfully changes throughout the day giving us an enhanced sense of natural rhythms and joy as we move around our daily activities. By lowering the floor level of the rear of the house privacy is maintained and we enjoy soaring ceiling heights. A genius play by Madeleine Blanchfield Architects

The design provides a unique living space for our family and is sympathetic to our Japanese/ Norwegian heritage. The extensive use of timber in the interior provides for a meditative and nurturing environment. This is complemented by the sculptured wooden exterior and Japanese Maple in the centre courtyard. At the same time, the extensive use of glass allows us to experience the constantly changing ocean and sky vistas...

We value the vision and attention to detail provided by Madeleine and her team. I always remember that Madeleine told me if I am working in the kitchen I should always be able to see the view. And now I can - it brings joy daily.

Madeleine Blanchfield Architects have a great work ethic. Madeleine is hard working, calm and efficient and this attitude is embraced by each of her staff.

Her many years of experience doing bespoke and high-end houses means that our requirements as the builder are understood.

Issues are openly discussed and advice taken onboard. There is no ego from the practice and as a result all the energy put into projects is spent getting the best possible result for the owners.

‘We are absolutely LOVING the house. I can’t begin to tell you how thrilled we are, it’s just divine and beyond our wildest dreams - thank you SO much for creating the most wonderful family home’

- Caroline Sherman, Clovelly

‘The architect Madeleine Blanchfield transformed our house into a bright, airy jewel box. It really is so beautifully detailed and feels so calm, like being on holiday... It’s quite whimsical and a bit quirky, which was our starting point for how we communicated what we wanted for the house. The end result is bright and airy, beachy and cosy’

I think the interior of the home you did at Clovelly is simply the most beautiful home I have ever seen. It is soft and elegant yet contemporary and seemingly robust. It is absolutely wonderful.
