No recinto do festival, que ficará situado na promenade da frente de mar, o visitante poderá encontrar vários stands, representando restaurantes da freguesia, onde poderá deliciar-se com a gastronomia típica, onde não faltarão “o Atum, o Gaiado e o Marisco” Os objetivos que norteiam esta iniciativa são divulgar a gastronomia tradicional local e a promoção cultural da Região.

A 35ª edição da Semana Gastronómica de Machico, que irá decorrer entre os dias 29 de julho e 7 de agosto, terá um cartaz com músicos de peso no panorama nacional. Depois da interrupção provocada pela pandemia Covid19 a semana volta com a

vontade de mostrar o porquê de ser um dos principais cartazes de festividades madeirenses. Este ano, destacam-se na programação musical a banda D.A.M.A (logo na abertura, dia 29 de julho), a cantora Ana Bacalhau (no dia 4 de agosto) e a banda de soul e funk HMB (dia 3 de agosto). Como também tem sido hábito nos últimos anos, haverá um tributo, desta feita à banda norte-americana Guns N’ Roses, no dia 2 de agosto. A animação será complementada por artistas e coletividades

Festa do Vinho Madeira é um evento que visa enaltecer as tradições vinícolas e a sua importância socioeconómica na Região, com muita animação à mistura. É quase impossível falarmos do Vinho Madeira sem falar da história cultural da ilha. Em 1425, foram introduzidas as primeiras vinhas. As primeiras castas de malvasia (Malmsey), foram importadas de Chipre, Creta e Itália. Foram plantados vários tipos de castas, um pouco por toda a ilha: o Malvasia, em Câmara de Lobos e Estreito de Câmara de Lobos; o Boal, em Campanário, Calheta e Ponta do Pargo; o Sercial, no Jardim da Serra, Arco de São Jorge e Fajã da Ovelha; e o Verdelho, no Funchal, Câmara de Lobos, Ponta Delgada e Estreito de Câmara de Lobos. A partir daí, as produções começaram a dar ‘fruto’ e o Vinho Madeira viajou além-fronteiras. A sua fama tornou-se de tal maneira lendária que, no século XVI, tinha um lugar de honra na corte francesa. Na corte inglesa também dava cartas, tornando-se popular graças a Jorge IV, com a ‘ajuda’ de Catarina de Bragança, esposa de Carlos II de Inglaterra, que o apresentou oficialmente lá. Em Inglaterra, o Vinho Madeira cresceu a passos largos, ao ponto de, na comemoração do IV centenário do nascimento de Shakespeare, um barril com 500 litros de Malmsey ter desfilado pelas ruas de Londres, copo a este, copo àquele.

he Madeira Wine Festival celebrates local winemaking traditions and their socio-economic importance in the region, with plenty of entertainment to boot. It’s almost impossible to talk about Madeira Wine without mentioning the island’s cultural history. The first vineyards were introduced in 1425 and the first malvasia (Malmsey) grape varieties were imported from Cyprus, Crete and Italy. Several types of grape varieties were planted all over the island: Malvasia in Câmara de Lobos and Estreito de Câmara de Lobos; Boal in Campanário, Calheta and Ponta do Pargo; Sercial in Jardim da Serra, Arco de São Jorge and Fajã da Ovelha; and Verdelho in Funchal, Câmara de Lobos, Ponta Delgada and Estreito de Câmara de Lobos. From then on, production started to bear ‘fruit’ and Madeira Wine travelled overseas. Its fame became so legendary that in the 16th century it had a place of honour at the French court. It was also popular at the English court, becoming popular thanks to George IV, with the ‘help’ of Catarina de Bragança, wife of Charles II of England, who officially introduced it there. In England, Madeira wine grew in leaps and bounds, to the point where, to commemorate the 4th centenary of Shakespeare’s birth, a 500-litre barrel of Malmsey was paraded through the streets of London, glass to this and glass to that. The festival in honour of this custom takes place during the harvests, in order to honour not only the drink but also the producers and viticulturists who make it possible for Madeira wine to be appreciated worldwide due to its excellent quality. The celebration takes place simultaneously in the town of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, with a live grape harvest and ethnographic parade; and in the city of Funchal, usually at the central plaque of Avenida Arriaga and Praça do Povo, where the MADEIRA WINE LOUNGE is located - a strictly decorated restaurant and leisure area. Musical performances, exhibitions and even gastronomy and Madeira wine tasting areas are initiatives which usually mark the tourist menu.

A celebração decorre, simultaneamente, na vila do Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, com a vindima ao vivo e o cortejo etnográfico; e na cidade do Funchal, habitualmente na placa central da Avenida Arriaga e na Praça do Povo, onde se localiza o MADEIRA WINE LOUNGE – espaço de restauração e lazer decorado a rigor. Atuações musicais, exposições e até espaços de gastronomia e de degustação de Vinho Madeira, são iniciativas que, habitualmente, marcam o cartaz turístico.

Alguns historiadores relatam que em 1794 apareceu o primeiro moinho. As paisagens ao redor do arquipélago são marcadas por este património de outros tempos que teima em aparecer pontualmente no horizonte, ao longo dos passeios pela ilha. Em alguns casos ainda moem. O Miradouro da Portela e o Miradouro do Moinho são ótimos pontos de contemplação que, para além das vistas deslumbrantes que oferecem sobre a Vila Baleira, têm alguns moinhos nas suas imediações.

he golden island, low-lying, windy and without much in the way of water, developed
with the use of the windmills that crushed the many cereals that were grown there. Some historians report that the first mill was built in 1794. The landscape around the island is marked by this legacy from days gone by, which appear on the horizon as you walk around the island. In some cases they are still grinding. The Portela viewpoint and the Moinho viewpoint are great lookout points which, apart from the stunning views they offer over Vila Baleira, have some mills in close proximity.

ituado no coração da vila de São Vicente, este exemplar religioso data de 1692 e foi a primeira igreja a nascer no Norte da Ilha da Madeira. É detentora de uma fachada principal simples e um portal maneirista, assumindo-se como uma construção de alguma versatilidade. Apresenta uma planta retangular e, no lado esquerdo, a torre sineira adossada à construção principal. O interior da igreja é formado por três naves ligadas por arcos de volta perfeita. O teto é pintado com São Vicente a abençoar a vila e o altar-mor é belissimamente talhado. A pia batismal é outro elemento que se destaca por ser construída em cantaria de características maneiristas.

ocated in the heart of the village of São Vicente, this religious building dates back to 1692 and was the first church to be built in the north coast. It has a simple main façade and a mannerist doorway, making it a versatile building. It has a rectangular design and a bell tower is attached to the main building on the left hand side. The interior of the church has three naves connected by round arches. The ceiling is painted with Saint Vincent blessing the town and the main altar is beautifully carved. The baptismal font is another element that stands out for being built in stonework with Mannerist characteristics.

Arte no Jardim ardim Monte Palace Madeira aloja uma impressionante colecção de trabalhos de arte de várias partes do mundo, que datam do segundo século da nossa era. Arcos de pedra, portais e janelas do séc. XIX e tipicamente Portuguesas foram colocados em todo o Jardim, contrastando com a vegetação e adornando os passeios. Em Abril de 1994, José Berardo adquiriu duas peças Manuelinas (uma janela e um nicho) de inestimável valor, ao mesmo tempo “herança nacional”. Uma destas peças havia passado despercebida num jardim nos Açores (Celorico da Beira) até que foi anunciada para venda num jornal local. O estilo Manuelino, como o próprio nome sugere, começou no reinado de D. Manuel, entre 1495 e 1521. Entre outros trabalhos encontrase estátuas em mármore do séc. XVIII, vários brasões em pedra do séc. XVI, estátuas de bronze do séc. XX de artistas, tais como James Butler e um busto do Imperador Adriano em mármore romano do segundo século da nossa era. O visitante pode também encontrar

quatro anjos esculpidos em granito, que representam quatro dos cinco sentidos: o cheiro, a vista, o ouvido e o gosto. Among other works are Statues crafted in Marble from the 18th century, several stone coats of arms dating from the 16th century, bronze statues from the 20th century by artists such as James Butler and a bust of Emperor Adrian in roman marble from the second century A.D. The visitor may also view four angels sculptured in granite, which represented four of the five senses: smell, sight, hearing and taste. onsiderada a freguesia com maior número de habitantes do concelho de Santa Cruz, cerca de 24 104 (censos 2021), Caniço deve a sua nomenclatura a uma planta comprida e delgada, uma espécie de cana que abundava naquela zona aquando da sua descoberta. Bem no centro da cidade, na Praça do Jardim, começa esta viagem. Em direção à Rua Dr. Francisco Peres, descobrimos ao descer, do lado oposto à junta de freguesia, o Posto de Transformação. Um dos vários exemplares que existem na ilha, da autoria do arquiteto moderno Chorão Ramalho. Ao subir a rua, surge o Núcleo Museológico da Casa do Povo da freguesia do Caniço. Sítio que guarda memórias de outros tempos, revelados em fotografias e exposições. A norte, rumo ao cruzamento com a Estrada João Gonçalves Zarco, situa-se a Vereda do Caminho Velho da Azenha, caminho esse empedrado em ponta de unha de cabra. Logo ao início sobressai o Moinho da Vargem e, à esquerda, o Relógio de Água – património secular

que servia para controlar as horas de rega dos levadeiros. Seguimos para a Levada da Azenha, onde as paisagens urbanas e rurais são o ponto principal que deixam encantados os visitantes. A par disso, destacam-se os lavadouros de pedra de basalto, que continuam a funcionar atualmente; as ruínas do Moinho da Vitória, junto ao Ribeiro do Caniço; e a Ponte em madeira sobre a Ribeira do Caniço. Mais adiante, surge a Igreja Matriz do Caniço – do Espírito Santo e Santo Antão, mandada construir no séc. XVIII. Destacam-se os retábulos tardobarrocos em talha branca e dourada, assim como a tela da Imaculada Conceição, de 1640, assinada por Martim Conrado. Este é um antigo caminho que pertence à Rede Natura 2000 e que, em tempos, ligava o centro do Caniço e a frente mar, percorrendo a margem poente da Ribeira do Caniço. Desde aqui vislumbra-se a zona da Mãe de Deus e o Vale da Ribeira do Caniço, caracterizados pelas margens escarpadas e poios cravados na encosta, fruto das atividades agrícolas. Mais abaixo, pelo mesmo caminho, surgem as paisagens panorâmicas sobre as Ilhas Desertas, o Pico da Atalaia, a Praia dos Reis Magos e a zona hoteleira do Caniço de Baixo. Encontram-se

as endémicas Figueiras do Inferno (Euphorbia piscatória) pelo caminho. Em tempos, a seiva que delas provinha era usada pelos pescadores para atordoar os peixes. Já mais perto do mar, surgem as Ruínas do Solar dos Reis Magos. Datadas do século XVIII, delas resta a torre avista-navios de porta e janelas articuladas de desenho erudito. Também nas redondezas, destaca-se o Fortim dos Reis Magos, uma antiga edificação militar de observação cujo objetivo era proteger o litoral. Para Poente, acabamos o roteiro ao percorrer o caminho do Cais da Oliveira que encaminha para a Ponta da Oliveira. Este é um local histórico onde a sul se estabeleceu a divisão física entre as duas primeiras capitanias administrativas da Madeira. Desde a Ponta da Oliveira até à Ponta do Tristão, no Porto Moniz, delimitava o território da Capitania de Machico, no lado leste. Já a oeste, delimitava a Capitania do Funchal. E porque todos os lugares na Madeira vão dar ao mar, o roteiro termina junto ao mesmo, no Cais da Ponta da Oliveira.

The journey begins right in the city centre, in Praça do Jardim. First stop is on Rua Dr. Francisco Peres, to have a look at the Transformer Station, opposite to the local council. One of the several examples that exist on the island, designed by the modern architect Chorão Ramalho. Going up the street, is the Museological Nucleus of the Casa do Povo do Caniço, that holds memories of times gone by, heldin photographs and exhibitions. To the north, towards the junction with Estrada João Gonçalves Zarco, is Vereda do Caminho Velho da Azenha, a cobbled path. At the beginning there is the mill “Moinho da Vargem” and, to the left, the Water Clock - secular patrimony that used to control the watering hours of the levada-keepers. We continue to Levada da Azenha, where the urban and rural landscapes

are the main point that leave visitors enchanted. Highlights include the basalt stone wash-houses that are still in operation today; the ruins of the Vitória Mill by the Caniço Stream; and the wooden bridge over the Caniço Stream. Further on is the Caniço Parish Church of Espírito Santo and Santo Antão, built in the 18th century. The late Baroque altarpieces in white and gilded woodcarvings stand out, as does the canvas of the Immaculate Conception from 1640 signed by Martim Conrado. Straight ahead, we set foot in Padre José Lomelino Barreto Square, where you can see Tipuanas, Jacarandás and the endemic Dragoeiros. The route continues through Rua Doutor Francisco Peres, following the Caminho da Corujeira, next to the “Café Isidro”. This is an old path belonging to the Natura 2000 Network which once linked the centre of Caniço and the sea front along the western bank of Ribeira do Caniço. From here you can see the area of Mãe de Deus and the valley of Ribeira do Caniço, characterised by steep banks and cliffs carved into the hillside as a result of agricultural activities. Further down the same road, there are panoramic views of the Desertas Islands, Pico da Atalaia, Reis Magos beach and the Caniço de Baixo hotel zone. The endemic Figueiras do Inferno (Euphorbia piscatoria) grow along the way. In the past, the sap from these trees was used by fishermen to stun fish. Closer to the sea are the ruins of the

Reis Magos manor house. Dating back to the 18th century, what remains of the manor house is a tower with a beautifully designed door and hinged windows. Also nearby is the Fortim dos Reis Magos, an old military observation building whose purpose was to protect the coast. To the west, we finish the itinerary by walking the path of Cais da Oliveira which leads to Ponta da Oliveira. This is a historical place where to the south the physical division between the first two administrative captaincies of Madeira was established. From Ponta da Oliveira to Ponta do Tristão, in Porto Moniz, it delimited the territory of the Captaincy of Machico, on the east side. To the west, it delimited the Capitania of Funchal. And because all places in Madeira lead to the sea, the itinerary ends by the sea, at Ponta da Oliveira Quay.

Festa do Santíssimo Sacramento Feast of the Blessed Sacrament
celebração aconteceu pela primeira vez em 1915, na igreja Portuguesa da Imaculada Conceição, em New Bedford. Estreouse, na primeira semana de agosto, com o objetivo de comemorar as tradicionais festas religiosas do Santíssimo Sacramento que aconteciam na ilha da Madeira, no Estreito da Calheta e restantes freguesias. Os responsáveis a realizá-la foram quatro imigrantes madeirenses: Manuel Agrela, Manuel Agrela Coutinho, Manuel Santana Duarte e Manuel Sebastião. A ideia desta celebração partiu de uma promessa feita pelos mesmos, se conseguissem chegar aos EUA com vida e saúde. Ninguém imaginava que esta se iria transformar na maior festa portuguesa do mundo, ao ponto de atrair milhares de pessoas a New Bedford, todos os anos no verão. Esta celebração é muito importante para os imigrantes madeirenses, na sua maioria agricultores que nasceram nas freguesias recatadas do arquipélago, que se conseguiram adaptar à nova vida em New Bedford, mantendo viva a sua herança cultural. Por isso, este evento é mais do que relembrar as festas típicas da ilha que estes deixaram para trás, homenageia a força destas pessoas que arriscaram vir trabalhar para um país em que não conheciam a língua nem os costumes, perante uma economia insegura no limiar do século XX. Nos primeiros anos de existência, entre 1915 e 1945, a organização cabia apenas aos imigrantes. Com o passar do tempo, os membros passaram de 4 para

110 pessoas. Em 1930, contabilizaram-se cerca de 15 mil pessoas a assistir à festa do Santíssimo Sacramento, onde muitos já não eram somente madeirenses. A vizinhança e os moradores decoravam a igreja e as ruas circundantes com arcos e verduras, bandeiras, luzes e flores. Também as estátuas dos Santos eram decoradas com lindas vestimentas e jóias. Os madeirenses tinham a oportunidade de mostrar a sua arte de decorar, como mandava a tradição das suas raízes. Após a segunda guerra mundial isso mudou com a segunda geração de festeiros a cargo, que reafirmaram a sua herança madeirense em simultâneo com a sua pátria – os EUA. Passou a ser frequentada por políticos, bandas militares e civis, etc. A celebração passou a acontecer na escola Ottiwell, porém, quando se aperceberam que o evento chegou até 25 mil pessoas, o local teria que ser maior. Foi então que, com o lucro que resultava dos festejos e que antes era oferecido à igreja, missionários e caridade, compraram um terreno abandonado, em 1951, para realizarem o evento. Até hoje os festejos acontecem nesse campo de festa – “O Madeira Field” (Campo da Madeira), que surgiu juntamente com o Clube S. S. Sacramento, Inc., em 1953. Com este novo espaço surgiu um memorial em granito em homenagem aos fundadores, a sede do Clube, lugares específicos para assar a carne, um pavilhão e uma cozinha equipada com eletrodomésticos para serem preparados os banquetes. Até uma réplica das tradicionais casas de
Santana foi ali construída, assim como latadas de vinha, barracas com favas, malassadas, linguiças, espetada e o célebre Vinho Madeira. Nada falta para relembrar as origens do arquipélago. E numa festa deste calibre, música e animação não podem faltar! Desde 1979, o grupo folclórico do clube traz também consigo um pouco da cultura da região e serve de entretenimento ao evento. O Museu de Herança Madeirense (Museum of Madeirian Heritage”), inaugurado em 1998, incorpora o “Café do Museu” e situa-se na esquina da parte sul do quarteirão do Madeira Field. É propriedade da Fundação do S.S. e acolhe uma vasta coleção de fotografias e objetos alusivos à ilha, preservando e valorizando o legado histórico dos que vieram viver para os EUA. The feast was founded by four Madeiran immigrants: Manuel Agrela, Manuel Agrela Coutinho, Manuel Santana Duarte and Manuel Sebastião who made a promise to honor the celebration if they were granted safe passage to the United States. No one could have imagined that this would become the largest Portuguese festival in the world, attracting thousands of people to New Bedford every summer. This event was very important to the Madeiran immigrants, the majority of them farmers born in the remote parishes of the Island, who managed to adapt to their new life in New Bedford, keeping their cultural heritage alive. Thus, this feast is more than just a reminder of the traditional festivals of the island that they left behind, it pays tribute to the strength of these people who took the risk of coming to work in a country where they knew neither the language nor the customs, facing an insecure economy at the beginning of the 20th century.
In the early years of its existence, between 1915 and 1945, the organization was run solely by immigrants. Over time, membership grew from 4 to 110 people. In 1930, there were about 15 thousand people attending the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament, many of whom were not Madeirans. Locals decorated the church and surrounding streets with arches and foliage, flags, lights and flowers and the statues of the saints were decorated with beautiful clothes and jewelry. Madeirans had the opportunity to show their traditional decorating skills. After the second world war this changed with the second generation of festeiros in charge, who reaffirmed their Madeiran heritage alongside their homeland - the USA. The feats was attended by politicians, military and civilian bands etc. The celebration started to take place at Ottiwell school, but when they realized that the event attracted up to 25,000 people, the venue had to be bigger. It was then that, with the profit that resulted from the festivities and that was previously given to the church, they bought an abandoned piece of land, in 1951, to hold the event. To this very day the feast takes
place on the land bought - “The Madeira Field”, which was born together with the S. S. Sacramento Club, Inc. in 1953. With this new space came a granite memorial in honor of the founders, the Club headquarters, specific places to roast meat, a pavilion and a kitchen equipped with appliances to prepare the banquets. Even a replica of the traditional houses of Santana was built, as well as trellised vines, stalls with broad beans, malassadas, sausages, espetadas and the famous Madeira wine. Everything is there to remind you of the archipelago’s origins. The Museum of Madeiran Heritage”, opened in 1998, incorporates the “Museum Café” and is located on the corner of the south side of the Madeira Field block. It is owned by the S.S. Foundation and houses a vast collection of photographs and objects alluding to the Island, preserving and valuing the historical legacy of those who came to live in the USA. The Feast of the Blessed Sacrament, which dates back more than a century, is a cultural event that has been cared for and recreated by several generations who have long since never let the memory and tradition of their homeland – the beautiful Pearl of the Atlantic – die.

Foi assim que a Quercus, a associação que avalia a qualidade das águas nacionais e que se rege por valores como a “Conservação da Natureza e dos Recursos Naturais” e a “Defesa do Ambiente em Geral”, considerou as praias madeirenses detentoras do galardão. Ao todo foram 440 as praias distinguidas em Portugal, mais 47 face ao ano de 2021. No caso da Madeira, que no ano passado contava com cerca de 30, acrescentou mais 5 praias à lista. O arquipélago tem nas suas águas balneares uma qualidade de excelência pela qual já são conhecidas e elogiadas. Sendo, não só importante para os madeirenses, assim como os turistas que representam um ponto fundamental para o crescimento da ilha, a qualidade ambiental das águas das praias são monitorizadas e avaliadas regularmente. A qualidade microbiológica é controlada segundo o cumprimento das recomendações da Associação da Bandeira Azul da Europa e da Agência Portuguesa e do Ambiente. Não só a qualidade exemplar atrai cada vez mais uma procura contínua pelo mar da Madeira. Influenciados pelo clima ameno e pelo mar de águas tépidas durante quase todo o ano, os que mergulham pela primeira vez nele, apaixonam-se pelas águas límpidas e apetecíveis que no Verão contam com

temperaturas médias entre os 25°C e, que no Inverno, não costumam baixar menos do que 17°C, transformando a Madeira num destino perfeito para visitar ao longo de todo o ano.

e pedaços de lava é feita a praia do Seixal, localizada na costa norte da ilha, no Porto Moniz. Quem vê os pedaços de rocha negra solidificada distribuídos pela areia da praia, alguns submersos, não faz ideia de que surgiram nos primórdios da ilha. Em grande parte, são eles os responsáveis pela formação rochosa natural que desenha e torna o cenário desta praia tão peculiar e de extrema beleza. A freguesia do Seixal, nasceu através do escorrimento de lava, proveniente dos últimos vulcões que entraram em atividade no maciço central. Do escorrimento que ocorreu no vale do Chão da Ribeira, resta esta fajã de lava. Também a areia negra, quase rara nas praias da Madeira, comprova os vestígios dos antepassados vulcânicos do arquipélago. É por isso que a praia do Seixal atinge uma beleza natural ímpar, digna de um cenário de filme. Quem a visita não consegue conter a vontade de a fotografar, apesar de não conseguir captar todo o seu esplendor através de

uma lente. De tão bela que é, chegou a ser escolhida por artistas musicais internacionais para a gravação dos seus videoclipes. A água que a banha, também essa, é apetecível e fresca. Procurada pelos praticantes de bodyboard, stand up paddle, surf e caiaque, é um spot propício para essas atividades ao longo do ano. Pelo facto do Clube Naval do Seixal se situar nas imediações, mesmo ao lado da praia do Seixal, lugar igualmente belo pela formação da sua piscina natural, facilita o acesso aos balneários e ao bar de apoio. Não admira que, pela visão utópica que é criada sobre a ligação abrupta do verde da montanha com o azul do mar das águas translúcidas, a Praia do Seixal seja a terceira melhor praia da Europa. eixal beach, located on the north coast of the island, in Porto Moniz, is made of ancient lava. The blocks of solidified black rock that lie on the sand, some of which are submerged, were formed in the early days of the island. These natural rock formations shape the scenery of this

extremely beautiful and unique beach. The parish was formed by the lava flows of the last active volcanoes in the Paul da Serra plateau. Some visible evidence of this is in the Chão da Ribeira valley, where you can find a fajã made from lava, as well as the black sand. This is why Seixal beach boasts an unparalleled natural beauty, worthy of a film set. Photographs are a must, although it is impossible to capture all its splendor through a lens. This spot has even been chosen by international music artists to record their video clips. The surrounding water is also fresh and inviting. The beach is sought after by bodyboarders, stand up paddle boarders, surfers and kayakers, year round due to its favorable characteristics. The Seixal Naval Club located nearby, has a natural swimming pool that is equally as beautiful. It also has changing rooms and a bar. It is no wonder that the contrasting greenery of the Laurissilva forest that plunges into the deep blue sea make Seixal beach the third best beach in Europe.

Quinta Vigia Viewpoint
onsiderada como a residência oficial do Presidente do Governo Regional da Madeira, esta quinta passou pelas ‘mãos’ de várias personalidades importantes, até que, em 1979 foi adquirida pelo Governo, posteriormente inaugurada a 2 de maio de 1984 como sua sede e residência oficial. O primeiro nome deste espaço fora Quinta das Angústias, devido à antiga capela da Nossa Senhora das Angústias, ali edificada do século XVII, em 1662. O nome “Quinta Vigia” surge mais tarde porque, graças à sua localização, aqui existia em tempos um posto de vigia para evitar possíveis ataques de corsários ou de navios inimigos. Destaca-se o miradouro embelezado com uma varanda, qual janela aberta para o imenso oceano de onde sobressai a sublime baía do Funchal. Os jardins são igualmente belos, ocupando cerca de 10 mil m² da quinta. The original name, Quinta das Angústias was due to the old chapel of Nossa Senhora das Angústias, built in 1662 on the estate. The current name, “Quinta Vigia” (Lookout) appears later on. Because of its location, there was once a lookout post here to avoid possible attacks by pirates or enemy ships.

The viewpoint is embellished with a balcony, like a window opening onto the immense ocean from where the sublime Funchal bay stands out. The gardens are equally beautiful, occupying about 10 thousand square metres of the estate. Species of Macaronesian flora can be found there, as well as exotic plants (Large-flowered sobralia Sobralia macrantha, Flame tree Brachychiton acerifolius, Magnolia Magnolia grandiflora, etc.) and endemic ones (Dragon tree Dracaena draco subsp. draco, Picconia excelsa, Pride of Madeira Echium nervosum), and even large trees. Museu de Ótica da Madeira Madeira Optics Museum a década de 1960, Rui Aguilar, apaixonado por engenharia e história, começou a adquirir dispositivos de ótica. Esse passatempo tornou-se mais ‘sério’ quando, 40 anos mais tarde, resultou numa coleção de cerca de 2 mil objetos relacionados com ótica que foram guardados numa garagem. Fora Sérgio Aguilar, seu filho, embebido pelo interesse por esta área, que ao redescobrir estas antiguidades do século XIV e finais do século XX, percebeu que todos os dispositivos de ótica tinham algum tipo de representação. Teriam então que ser partilhados com o mundo através de um museu, ideia que surge em 2014. O Museu de Ótica abre as suas portas no dia 7 de setembro de 2017, sendo considerado o primeiro em apresentar uma coleção privada de dispositivos de ótica na Madeira. A exposição que exibe permanentemente reúne os cerca de 2 mil objetos, distribuídos por dois andares. O espaço inclui ainda uma área para café e uma pequena loja de antiguidades de acesso gratuito, situada à entrada do edifício.

Apesar de descoberto em 1837, a Academia Francesa de Ciências anunciava mundialmente a inovadora invenção no ano de 1839. Muito se deu graças aos estudos de Joseph Niépce, entre 1765 e 1833, de onde surgiu a héliographie alguns anos antes (imagem heliográfica que era criada sobre uma placa de prata e coberta com um derivado de petróleo fotossensível chamado de Betume da Judéia, exposto ao sol até 8 horas).

Celebrated on the 19th of August, due to the invention of the daguerreotype photographic process by Frenchman Louis Daguerre, a day that was considered the turning point in the history of photography. Although discovered in 1837, the

French Academy of Sciences only announced the innovative invention in the year 1839. Much of this was due to Joseph Niépce’s studies, between 1765 and 1833, from where the heliographie (heliographic image that was created on a silver plate and covered with a photosensitive petroleum derivative called Bitumen of Judea, exposed to the sun for up to 8 hours) had emerged a few years before.

Ariana da Europa é uma espécie nativa relativamente recente na fauna do arquipélago da Madeira. A primeira vez que foi registada foi no Ribeiro Frio, em 1976, e a partir daí tornou-se amplamente distribuída e abundante um pouco por toda a ilha. Apesar disso, julga-se que a espécie esteja ausente das Ilhas Desertas e do Porto Santo. É nas áreas florestais que a Ariana da Europa prefere voar, por entre as réstias de sol que a vegetação deixa escapar. De igual forma, por entre os jardins e florestas de eucaliptos, abaixo dos 1000 metros, pode também ser avistada. Já na Laurissilva é menos comum. Os machos, que são muito territoriais, podem ser identificados através dos seus voos verticais em movimentos espirais com outros machos que se cruzem nos seus territórios. Os machos e as fêmeas

são semelhantes na sua aparência. Normalmente as fêmeas medem entre 46 e 58 mm e os machos entre 45 e 50 mm. Esta espécie é em muito semelhante à Ariana da Madeira, principalmente no comportamento muito territorial dos machos, assim como no aspeto de ambos os géneros, onde apenas alguns pormenores os distinguem. A espécie atinge uma vida curta, de aproximadamente 20 dias, quando reside na Grã-Bretanha e em algumas partes do continente europeu. he European Speckled Wood is a relatively recent addition to the native wildlife. First recorded in 1976 in Ribeiro Frio, it has since become abundant all over the island. The species is thought to be absent from Porto Santo and the Desertas Islands.

This butterfly can be commonly seen flying in and around the woodlands, its colorful wings glinting in the sunlight. It can also be found in gardens eucalyptus forests under 1000 meters altitude and to a lesser extent in the Laurissilva forest. The males, who are highly territorial, can be identified by their aggressive flights, defying other males that dare cross their territories. Both sexes are similar in appearance, females measure between 46 and 58 mm and males between 45 and 50 mm. Similar to the Madeiran Speckled Wood, mainly in regards to it’s territorial behavior, as well as in the appearance of both genders, where only a few details distinguish them. Although its European counterparts have a lifespan of only 20 days, it is thought that the Madeiran specimens live a little longer.

Para além da espécie pinnatifidum, surgem mais 2 subespécies endémicas, a montanum que geralmente se encontra no urzal de altitude e a suculentum que apenas habita a Ponta de São Lourenço. A Argyranthemum pinnatifidum sp. pinnatifidum nasce geralmente na Laurissilva, podendo ser encontrada em abundância pela ilha em áreas abertas, penhascos e declives, entre os 300 e os 1500 metros. Para além disso, pode ser observada cultivada em jardins e nas bermas das estradas, constituindo um elevado valor ornamental. Apresenta-se como um arbusto que pode chegar até 1.50 metros de altura. Na Madeira, os arbustos endémicos tal como este, desempenham funções fulcrais, pois, para além de contribuírem para o ambiente, nomeadamente na prevenção da erosão e na produção

Valued as an ornamental plant, it can also be seen cultivated in gardens and on roadsides. This shrub can reach up to 1.50 meters in height and as with most endemic shrubs performs essential functions. Besides contributing to the environment, namely preventing erosion and producing oxygen, they attract thousands of insects such as bees and butterflies that seek pollen from the beautiful flowers. Blooming usually occurs between the spring/summer months, from March to July, but it is in May that the flowers usually paint the mountains white. However, it can be planted at any time of the year. Physical characteristics include a stem of between 30 and 150 cm and white, obovate leaves that measure between 7 and 22 centimeters in length. 25

VEREDA DAS FUNDURAS PR5 - Funduras Footpath
ste é um dos percursos mais conhecidos de Machico. Quando se refere à diversidade faunística e florística, este reserva a maior mancha de Laurissilva do concelho. Inicia-se junto ao miradouro da Portela e, a partir daí nascem as deslumbrantes paisagens. Numa cota acima dos 600 metros, inicia-se a viagem. Esta vereda é característica por ser um lugar propício para a prática de desportos de Trail e BTT. O percurso das Funduras é possível ser explorado por pessoas com mobilidade reduzida, sendo um percurso classificado como “PBTT JOEL – Um caminho para todos”. São aproximadamente 2 km que percorrem um trilho ondulado e coberto por vegetação endémica, como o Loureiro (Laurus novocanariensis) e o Barbusano (Apollonias barbujana). Mais adiante, no Posto Florestal das Funduras, é possível retomar o fôlego, apreciar a sublime natureza que o adorna, e descansar. O final do percurso faz-se descendo o trilho por uma escadaria em madeira. Aí encontrará a

levada dos Maroços, e se a continuar, descobrirá a localidade com o mesmo nome. A vereda das Funduras é um percurso de sentido único e, por isso, pode ser iniciado em dois pontos distintos. One of the most visited walks in Madeira, you can discover the essence of the Laurissilva forest, where the unique scenery is painted un shades of green. The name ‘25 fontes’ (25 fountains) refers to the number of waterfalls that throughout the year fall over the beautiful lagoon. This haven in the middle of the forest is a real charm capable of creating incredible photos. The route is about 9km round trip and takes about 4 hours of walking.

The mouth of Ribeira da Janela attracts many visitors for the peculiar rock formations that rise up in the middle of the sea, very close to the coast. The three rocks, the Ilhéus da Rama (the largest), the Ilhéu Alto (40 metres high) and the Ilhéuzinho (the smallest), make for a unique setting. The best photos are taken near the beach, between the rocks, when climbing the stairs to the viewpoint.

Chão dos Louros São Vicente
Inserido no Parque Natural da Madeira e localizado em plena floresta da Laurissilva, o Chão dos Louros é uma zona de lazer bem conhecida pelos madeirenses. Entre flashes a meio das árvores endémicas, em grande número, dos Loureiros (de onde advém o nome deste lugar) ou entre fotos mais cuidadosas da avifauna, é perfeito para um dia de convívio em família ou amigos. O elemento com mais enquadramento fotográfico deste lugar é o pórtico ou arco de entrada para a praia do calhau de São Jorge. É como se fosse uma moldura que guarda uma fotografia do mar. As ruínas são restos do Núcleo Primitivo da Freguesia de São Jorge, onde em tempos já existiram engenhos de cana-de-açúcar.

This is a recent attraction on the island. The Greta da Dona Beja is located in Ribeiro dos Burros in Porto dos Frades. These are huge cliffs eroded by the sea and wind that have acquired immense beauty due to the way they are ‘designed’, giving way to the narrow passage between them. This way, it is possible to access its interior, resulting in spectacular photos and memories.
