FOREWORD Made in Brownsville (MiB) is a non-profit youth creative agency in Brooklyn, NY. We provide young people from the community with creative jobs and training.

Our junior designers are paired with experienced creative professionals on projects where they learn communication design, creative problem-solving, art history, multimedia content creation, and project management. In addition to providing invaluable teaching/learning opportunities, these strategic collaborations allow us to keep project budgets low by sharing creative work between trainees and mentors.

Project DescriptioN Building on their “Brownsville Stronger Together” campaign, BCJC sought to increase visibility of the brand and activate underutilized public space in the community. Identifying a dead end street as a space of intervention, we developed a proposal with youth that created a pedestrian plaza that would later be used for street fairs and other public activations to increase foot traffic on the corridor. It has added a vibrant public amenity in a section of the neighborhood that has been neglected.

Project DescriptioN The concept for the Youth Clubhouse was developed with youth residents from Marcus Garvey Apartments under MiB EDU programming for BCJC. Youth residents of the housing complex sought to fill a void in the available amenities within the complex by activating a vacant lot.

The proposed activation gave residents a space for events, vocational training, entrepreneurship and recreation.

Project DescriptioN Health Start Brooklyn is an umbrella initiative for a number of institutions working in Brooklyn that provide a variety of support programs and classes for new parents. They requested a printed marketing piece that highlighted education and support services for pregnancy, childbirth, parenting, breastfeeding and healthy living.

Our unique quad-fold brochure with “tabs” allowed viewers to see the contents at a glance from the cover and was small enough to fit in a back pocket; two features that were extremely important to the client.

Project DescriptioN A part of Small Business Services Corridor District Needs Assessment, in collaboration with the Brownsville Community Justice Center, MiB conducted a digital and physical survey of 150 residents and 30 merchants to assess the grounds for commercial revitalization on a once thriving business corridor in Brownsville. This allowed us to understand what challenges the corridor faced and possible solutions. This foldable pamplet was produced to dessiminate the findings to the community.

AWNINGS

Fixed Awnings Awnings provide customers shelter from rain and protect merchandise from overexposure to the sun. The size and scale of the awning should match the storefront framing.

Awnings should never cover architectural features or block upper floor windows. Like signs, a simple awning design is most effective at drawing in customers and usually the more affordable option.

Awning should be placed below the store sign or cornice.

Awning cannot extend more than 4 feet from storefront

Lettering: Only the business name and address can appear on the awning

Awning valance must be at least 8 feet above the sidewalk

If the building and windows are in good repair, angled awnings without bottoms or sides appear cleaner and more open

Durable and easy to maintain, fixed awnings should be constructed of high-quality, weather resistant canvas such as Sunbrella. The awning should align with the second floor window sill or the bottom of the storefront’s sign.

Retractable Awnings Retractable awnings offer a vintage look and allow business owner to close the awning during storms or when the business is closed. They are popular among retailers that have sidewalk sales or restaurants with temporary seating.
