Next to the collateral damage, resulting from the war in Syria, and as it was the case in Iraq after 2003, historical sites today are looted. The region is now the location for antique trafficking. Historical and archeological objects have been found in Lebanon or Jordan. Located in the west of Syria, the site of Apamea, near the Mediterranean Sea, whose ruins date back to Roman times, has been pillaged. The looters even organized clandestine excavations to try finding valuable historical objects. As for the museums in Damascus, it seems that the staff has tried to hide the objects in order to safeguard them from traffic and looting.
