SC - J’ai travaillé avec Ed sur tous mes projets de films parce qu’il est sensible à différents environnements et arrive à faire passer des émotions. Il sait d’instinct transmettre des contrastes et ne se contente pas d’accompagner les images de sons. Ed a le sens de l’image parce qu’il travaille depuis des années pour la télévision - notamment dans des documentaires pour National Geographic, la BBC, Discovery -, la publicité et bien sûr les films – comme The Seventeenth Kind ou The Sky in Bloom -. Comme il cherchait à faire passer la géographie du lieu dans la bande originale du film, Ed a fait de nombreuses recherches sur la musique traditionnelle birmane et l’instrumentation thaïe. Le résultat est superbe, enregistré en grande partie à Sofia avec l’Orchestre Symphonique Bulgare. La musique est tout en contrastes, un côté léger pour accompagner le monde de l’enfance, de l’autre un côté plus sombre par moments pour illustrer la vision de l’adulte, plus grave.

Our first choice was Sigourney: she had worked with James, Suzy’s husband, many times in Aliens and Avatar amongst others, and she is a friend of the couple. MM - Music plays an important role. How did Edward White compose the film music? SC - Ed and I have worked together on all my projects. His sensitivity to different environments makes his musical insights powerfully emotive. Ed has a great instinct for emotional contrasts; rather than simply following the visual delivery. Ed has a sense for meaningful images: he has been working many years for television - particularly documentaries for National Geographic, BBC, Discovery -, advertising and of course for films – such as The Seventeenth Kind ou The Sky in Bloom -. Since the goal was to achieve a real feeling of geography, Ed did a lot of research into traditional Myanmar music and traditional Thai instrumentation. The result is superb; recorded in Sofia and performed by the Bulgarian Symphonic Orchestra. The music offers different contrasts, conveying a child’s view of the world through music on one side, then a darker side at moments illustrating the adult’s more serious point of view.
