THE AMBER EFFECT
ADVANCED STUDIO - FALL 2023
The Amber Effect delves into the intimate relationship between scent, space and self, proposing a fragrance retail designed that evokes the essence of the tranquil Frio River in Leakey, Texas.
The project uses the scent of amber as a conceptual foundation. Amber is often associated with sensuality, softness, richness, and a natural, earthy aroma. These qualities translate into the architectural design as warm, tactile materials and organic forms and design motifs that reflect the complexity and depth of the fragrance.
By intertwining undulating forms and soft edges, the design creates an atmospheric environment that resonates with the ambient and rich scent of amber; encouraging organic circulation within the interior space and inviting inhabitants to explore their personal connection to fragrance.
Other explorations are through texture, lighting, color palette and volume, as well as other tangible qualities of scent. Guided by subtle scent trails, visitors will navigate the space through sensorial cues, enhancing their awareness of the connection between their body and the fragrances they encounter.
By crafting this relationship between materiality, scale and olfactory experiences, certain spaces of The Amber Effect will be segmented into: scent exploration and community zones and reflection rooms.
The Amber Effect is not merely a space for scent exploration, but an immersive experience that redefines the relationship between architecture and fragrance.
2 = The inner ring indicates quick, faint sensory stimulation, representing fleeting ‘right place at the right time’ moments.
4 = The next ring reflects a more constant, lighter presence of the senses. These inner rings align more with a fragrance or perfumes ‘top notes’.
6 = The middle ring symbolizes a stronger sense of taste, touch, smell and sound and visuals, serving as a ‘middle note’, contributing significantly to the overall amber sensorial experience.
8 = This ring represents moderate, more impaction sensations, with stronger values noted in the observations, similar to those of ‘middle notes.’
10 = The final ring, the outer ring showcases the most profound sensorial impressions of amber, where scent, touch, taste, sight and sound are immediately recognizable and may even be overpowering, but also unaffected by external influences.
THE FIVE SENSES RING GRAPHS INTERTWINED
This sensorial research uses ‘Ring Graphs’ as visual representations to the proportional relationships of the Five Senses, as multiple data series simultaneously.
Discoveries indicate that amber as a fragrance transcends two-dimensions, engaging all of the body senses, revealing a unique ‘frequency’ interwoven with other sensory spectra.
This holistic approach fosters innovation in design by enriching our understanding of spatial awareness and emotional resonance, through a rich tapestry of sensorial interactions within fragrance, nature and the body.
By embracing nature and the role of fragrance, interior spaces become trans-formative environments that reflect the beauty and complexity of the natural world, while creating deeper connections with our spaces.

THE COPPER HOUSE
TECHNICAL STUDIO - SPRING 2023
The Copper House project is an exploration of historical influence, design innovation, and functionality within a restaurant and bar setting.
It embraces a ‘Steampunk’ aesthetic, fusing Victorian elegance with industrial architecture, evoking the spirit of Boson, Massachusetts industrial boom.
Every element, from the grand structure to the smallest details, is meticulously crafted to offer a fully immersive and atmospheric experience.
The creation of detailed technical design drawings played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life, providing hands-on experience with the intricacies of layout, elevations, and sections.
Mastering these technical skills allowed for the precise execution of both aesthetic and functional elements, ensuring that every detail contributes to a cohesive, immersive environment.
This process not only shaped the final design but also deepened the understanding of how technical expertise is essential in achieving a seamless, one-of-a-kind experience.
The site is a historical, brick masonry townhouse in Beacon Hill Boston, MA, adapted to serve as a boutique hotel and restaurant. The kitchen sits at the basement level, leaving the 2,700 SF ground level for dining, lounge and bar.
Inspiration behind the design and concepts of the bar stem from Boston’s industrialization during the Victorian era, and how it transformed the city from a port town, into a booming industrial central hub.
Technological, scientific and industrial innovations (mass production, steam engines, railways, sewing machines, gas and electric light and elevated railways and electric cars) advanced drastically, as well as the growing population.
The bar is adorned with intricate pipes, damask textiles, oil barrels, Gothic style carved wood, textile machinery gears and other mechanical contraptions, giving it a truly distinctive ambiance.
All elements of design found in this project are custom-made and modeled, to enhance the unique dining experience for its guests.
For those who appreciate the extraordinary and offbeat, The Copper House offers a one-of-a-kind destination where history, fantasy, and mixology converge in a harmonious blend, making it a must-visit spot for steampunk enthusiasts and curious patrons alike.

SEAHOLM GYM
CORE STUDIO II - SPRING 2022
The Seaholm Intake Building is a Historic Texas and Austin Landmark.
It was once used as a facility that passed water directly from Lady Bird Lake (from its waterfront location) into the local Austin Power-plant, to generate power for the city.
Integrating ‘the way of water’ with re-purposed, painted pipes that run in various motions throughout the gym are the highlight design for this project.
In these areas, lighting can be found in different designs, tying in the meaning of converting water into power.
This form of design also acts as a way-finding technique and guides the gym goers throughout various levels of the Seaholm Gym, containing a weight room, cardio section, zumba and spin cycle classrooms and open training zones and a gender neutral locker room that has a breathtaking view of Lady Bird Lake and the outdoors.
The Seaholm Gym is designed for an easy circulation throughout the facility, much like the smooth flow of Lady Bird Lake. The structure of The Seaholm Gym is by social and personal programming needs.
UPPER FLOOR
The upper floor offers an open, social environment focused on weights, with some cardio equipment and convenient access with staircases at both wings.
MIDDLE FLOOR
Acting as a central hub, this floor contains an open locker room and restrooms with an exceptional view of Lady Bird Lake, providing an excellent transitional space between workouts. By placing this programming in the middle, there is balanced access across all floors, ensuring convenience for gym-goers.
LOWER
The lower floor is more intimate, with areas dedicated to personal training, cardio, yoga and group classes, creating a more personal and focused workout experience, with a water level view of the lake and natural lighting.
BOLD BODY
CORE STUDIO II - SPRING 2022
The goal of this project was to design an exercise device (an accessory or prop) with an understanding of how it may enable a particular form of body movement or exercise.
When this object is not in use, this device has the life of an architectural sculpture art form not unlike any contemporary sculptures that are popular today.
As such, the objective is to consider and fulfill the object’s function, but also to imbue the device with compelling aesthetic character.
This assignment prohibited any ready-made items, as the aim was to take an everyday object and create a new as-of-yet unknown objects.
Each student researched function and use of exercise equipment, provide sketches, drawings, digital drawings and/or physical mock-ups.
Objectives are to explore three-dimensional design solutions such as physical model making, fabrication, sanding, casting, painting, CNC router and more.
This colorful device was designed as a full-body workout exercise instrument, with each color implementing a particular exercise that could be performed on each surface of the sculpture.

REIMAGINING PRECEDENTS - FALL 2023
This assignment used the ‘Nike Super Rep Launch’ by Storeystudio London as a practice client, asking us to work in reverse to create a series of 2-3 moodboards and convey the initial concept for their pop-up project.
Images extracted from the finished project itself were not allowed, but finding referential projects, imagery, materiality, lighting, texture, etc. Were all allowed; anything that communicated a similar idea to the already executed installation.
All images were required to be digitally modified in color, tone and saturation.
The aesthetics of the newly made precedents were asked to convey drama, key materials, spatial organization, details, lighting and other technological innovation found within the design of the actual launch experience.
This design exercise challenged our digital editing abilities and comprehension of moodboards, a particular style of collage used as a visual representation of objects, composition, imagery, feelings/ emotions and general ideas.
Software Used: Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator

REIMAGINING PRECEDENTS - FALL 2023
Interior design and furniture making merge functionality with artistic expression, transforming spaces into reflections of personal style and intention.
In this project, the goal was to create a furniture design inspired by a renowned fashion designer, with Oscar de la Renta serving as the chosen muse.
Known for dressing powerful women and capturing the essence of femininity, sensuality, and elegance, de la Renta’s designs have long celebrated women like Oprah and Taylor Swift, using delicate details to convey strength.
Similarly, the furniture pieces created for this project embody these ideals—elegant, one-of-a-kind designs that reflect the beauty and power of the women who inspire them.
The concept should have 2-3 pieces of furniture pieces, with ideas for materiality, a moodboard for inspiration, detailing, texture, form and color. Hand sketches and digital images were also required.
