In November this year, we published “Luxury Limassol Hotels Magazines», which will henceforth be an annual periodical.

This glamorous, bi-lingual (English and Russian) publication will be featured in our magazines distributed in select Luxury Hotels in Limassol, the two major Cyprus Airports and will be available online on most popular Hotel booking websites as well as distributed to over 100 overseas Tour Operators from ten different countries who presently work with Cyprus.

2017 marks the year of nomination of Paphos as the European Capital of Culture and we shall dedicate the next edition of our Luxury magazine to “Luxury Paphos Hotels,” in March/April 2017. This will be followed by our magazine on the extravaganza of “Luxury Ayia Napa and Protaras Hotels,” in April/ May 2017, heralding the much awaited season of midnight madness, fun and frolic, the highly touted Cyprus Summer. Both publications will showcase those cities amidst the trappings of localised grandeur as well as diversions to keep visitors occupied and satiated.

In July 2017, we also plan to release a new bi-annual magazine, 'Cyprus Finest’, in a July/February cycle, featuring only the top 15 Cyprus Hotels and the Best Businesses in our country. This magazine will be published in two versions: the first, Blue edition, reserved for Cyprus, i. e., distribution in every room of the 15 Best Hotels in Cyprus; other well visited areas of our Island such as the Limassol Marina; sites that see affluent footfalls like Private clinics and Doctors’ offices; Lawyers, Architects and Developers’ and, of course, Banks and CYTA offices. The second, Red edition, will be available in the VIP and Business Class lounges of the three major airports of Moscow, Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo, which together see almost 70 million passengers per year, besides our usual overseas distributors, for unmatched global reach. We will, tentatively, add Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg at a later stage, before moving on to other past Soviet Union Airports, London, Dubai and Abu Dhabi as we expand.

Christmas Christmas is the second most important festival in the Greek Orthodox calendar. Church services, Christmas carols, events and parties mark this totally family affair.

The New Year Welcome to the New Year ‘Protochronia’… As the clock strikes twelve, the New Year is emblazoned with fireworks filling the night sky. A plethora of parties and events occur with everyone greeting Happy New Year ‘Kali Khronia’. Here, Ayios Vasilis (Saint Basil) and not Father Christmas brings everyone’s gifts when he arrives on the night of New Year’s Eve — ​in time for his Name Day on 1 January! Soon after midnight, families share their Vasilopitta — ​‘Basil’s Pie’- a delicious sponge cake with the first two slices given to the church & Christ and the poor.

Ski Season January means snow time in Cyprus although the snowfall is unpredictable. As soon as it snows on the mountains, families head up to the Troodos for a day in the snow. Ski kits, snowboards & sledges can be hired. Skiing can be enjoyed on the slopes of Mount Olympus (1951 m amsl), until the end of March, under the aegis of The Cyprus Ski Club. The Limassol Carnival Cyprus celebrates Carnival with fancy dress and parties, but there is no city which approaches the spectacle Limassol annually presents. The Apokreo festival begins two weeks before the 50-day Greek Orthodox Lenten period and lasts for 10 days, filled with festive, amusing masquerades, starting in the Meat

Week (Kreatini), the last week for eating meat before Easter. The second week is known as the cheese week (Tyrini).

The festival starts with the entrance parade of the King Carnival to the town decorated for the occasion on the Kreatini Thursday named Tsiknopefti.

The last Sunday of the Cheese Week is the highlight of the Carnival, as it leads to Green Monday, or ‘Kathara Deftera’, the first day of Lent, when everyone heads for the countryside with a huge vegetarian picnic and flies kites. If you are keen to compete, transport can be arranged by 4VIPTour.

Cyprus Contemporary Dance Platform A joint programme of the Ministry of Education and Culture and the RIALTO Theatre, this event is held yearly each March and deals with first-view noncommercial contemporary dance creations. Celebrities at the international level are invited to the Festival to interact with the performers, even selecting performances to be presented at events or festivals abroad, e. g., selection of performances to represent Cyprus at the European Dance Festival also takes place at this Festival.

Procession of St Lazarus This festival takes place eight days before the Greek Orthodox celebration of Easter. The feast day of the patron saint, St. Lazarus, is celebrated with a lively procession by Cypriots. The icon of Saint Lazarus, normally kept in the Church of St. Lazarus is taken in procession through the streets of Larnaca.

Cyprus Russian Festival

Anthestiria In May, Cypriots celebrate the spring’s return and nature’s beauty in spring with Anthestiria, or Flower Festival. Though held in honour of Dionysus, the god of wine and fertility, Anthestiria was also the carnivals of souls, plants and flowers to celebrate the re-birth of man and nature. The festival is commenced by a parade of floats and people carrying beautiful, fresh flowers to the seafront.

The biggest event of its kind in Cyprus. About 12–15,000 people gather in June annually in the Limassol Municipal Gardens to celebrate the unique relationship between Russia and Cyprus. Nearly 50,000 Russian-speakers reside in Cyprus and more than 800,000 tourists from CIS countries visit it every year. Over 1,000 actors, dancers and singers from both countries perform on 3 stages in the non-stop cultural and entertainment programme.

Flood Festival — Kataklysmos

16 April

The annual festival Kataklysmos, the Cyprus Water Festival (Festival of the Flood) takes place fifty days after Orthodox Easter. Celebrated only in Cyprus and some Greek coastal villages, this festival marks the Pentecost. Honouring Noah and the Flood, celebrations are focussed on water. People sprinkle each other with sea water, a symbolic purification of body and soul. The 3–4 day event includes numerous contests. Sunset kicks off music and dancing late into the night.

Easter ‘Pascha’ As everyone prepares for Easter, the Lenten fast is strictly observed by many Cypriots of all ages. Easter is the greatest festival of all. During Holy Week there are daily church services at sunset when a special anthem to Our Lady called ‘Hairetismoi’ is sung. Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Sunday have their individual connotations and worship is conducted accordingly.

May Day, ‘Protomagia’ European Contemporary and Labour Day Dance Festival Traditionally, spring flower wreaths are hung outside the entrance doors to ward off evil while celebrating Spring and Nature with a flower festival on Protomagia, which custom has its roots in ancient Greece. To honour Labour Day, a big parade takes place in most cities to celebrate the economic and social achievements of the workers.

This annual Dance Festival takes over the Rialto Theatre in Limassol and the Pallas Theatre in Nicosia. 16 European countries unite for an extravaganza of contemporary dance performances. Shakespearean Nights The Shakespeare festival is an annual charity event held at the ancient open air theatre of Kourion (Curium), 19 km from Limassol. Plays are staged in a fascinating old world amphitheatre & attract large audiences from Cyprus and abroad.

ANCIENT CYPRUS: The Embodiment of History

Cyprus is History personified and presents glimpses of a highly intriguing past, where fact can be stranger than fiction. The archeological vistas serve to reinforce this point.

The Cyprus Wine Museum

Kourion or Curium (Latin) was an ancient city on the SW coast of Cyprus, the surrounding Kouris River Valley being occupied from the Ceramic Neolithic period (4500–3800 BCE) to date. The acropolis of Kourion, 18 km west of Limassol, is located atop a limestone promontory nearly one hundred metres in height along the coast of Episkopi Bay. Legend has it that Kourion was founded in the 12th century B.C. by Argives.

Excavations over decades have unearthed several archeological masterpieces like the early 3rd century A. D. Roman Agora; the House of Achilles, a Roman villa, only part of which is preserved today; the House of the Gladiators, also a Roman house, dated to late 3rd century A.D. and the Theatre — ​a 2nd century B.C. structure with follow up additions & restorations — ​ a curved auditorium that seated around 3500 people. Today the theatre is used for cultural events.

Kolossi Castle is a former Crusader stronghold on the south-west edge of Kolossi village 14 km west of Limassol.

It held great strategic importance in the Middle Ages, and contained large facilities for the production of sugar from local sugarcane, one of Cyprus's main exports then. The original castle was possibly built in 1210 by the Frankish military. It served first as the Grand Commandery of the Knights Templar, and after the fall of Acre in 1291 for some years, the land of Kolossi was given by King Hugh I to the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem (Hospitallers). The present castle was built in 1454 by the Hospitallers under the Commander of Kolossi, Louis de Magnac. The castle today looks in good condition. Considered to be impregnable, it proved so, surviving even earthquakes.

The fertile land around it saw many vineyards come up and the area is known for its sweet wine, Commandaria, produced in the region for millennia.

The Cyprus Wine Museum started operations in November 2004. It is situated at the edge of the wine-producing countryside, in the village of Erimi and adjacent to the famous Kolossi Castle, which is historically connected to the production of Commandaria. A special son et lumière describes the 5500-year wine culture of Cyprus from the birthplace of European Wine, Erimi. The Cyprus Wine Museum will take you on a journey through the history of the island’s long winemaking tradition. The various stages of wine production and consumption — ​along with the various uses of wine — ​are shown through different presentations. Ancient jars and canisters, medieval drinking vessels, old documents and instruments illustrate the social, economic and symbolic aspects of wine production, whilst wine tasting is also available.

CYP RIOT DISHE S AN D D RIN KS Soups

The traditional Easter soup is the Mayeritsa, made with the remaining parts of the roast lamb served as the main course. This soup contains lamb on the bone, onion, celery, parsley, beaten eggs, rice, cornstarch, milk, lemon and pepper.

Traditional Cyprus Trachanas Soup is a popular year-round soup. Trachanas are crumbly solid cakes prepared by processing soured goat’s milk boiled with crushed wheat and salt, added to appropriate stock and heated to get a creamy porridge-like consistency. A handful of small cubes of halloumi cheese are added in the final stages, along with seasoning.

Poultry fans can ask for an Avgolemono Soup, a classic soup with tender chicken, orzo (rice) pasta and a delicious bright lemon flavour. Avgolemono means egg-lemon. The chicken version of Avgolemono soup is preferred over beef and fish-base versions.

Appetizers

Hot appetizers could include a traditional Cyprus Halloumi grill, i. e., grilled Halloumi cheese with tomato concasse and balsamic vinegar; Taramosalata is a very addictive dip made from fish roe, a lot of olive oil, bread or potatoes; Tirokafteri — ​a spicy, hot cheese dip.

Delicacies

A gourmet would realise the island’s passion for Lountza (smoked pork loin); Tsamarella (dried goat meat in coriander seeds and wine); Chiromeri (pork meat in wine and smoked); Zalatina (gelatine and boiled pork); Snails barbecued or cooked with onions, garlic and tomatoes in late autumn.

Salads

A Horiatiki salad, which means village or peasant salad, is the focal point of the Mediterranean Diet. It is known to boost cardiovascular health. It has vegetables, tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, red onions, protein from the feta and olives and olive oil, which is the main fat used.

All these ingredients make a delicious salad and provide us with lots of vitamins and other necessary nutrients. The olive oil helps to lower cholesterol (LDL) and its antioxidant properties is a shield against heart attacks. In antiquity olive oil was used to cure muscular pains and skin diseases. On the other hand tomatoes are also a good source of antioxidants and lycopene and the onion is a good source of flavinoids, which again helps to raise

the good cholesterol (HDL) and prevent cardiovascular disease.

Cypriot Grain Salad uses loads of exotic ingredients like deseeded pomegranate, currants, freekah or, at times, quinoa.

Cypriot-style potato salads are also a big hit, served with grilled fish, meat, or as part of a big spread. The lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, seasoning to taste, olives, capers, coriander leaves and finely sliced spring onions add pep to the meal.

The tomato salad uses sliced beefsteak tomatoes, local oregano, or rigani which has a musky essence, halloumi, olive oil and vinegar.

Stifado is a traditional and fragrant stew is made with rabbit (and sometimes beef) that’s simmered in wine, vinegar, onions, and popular Greek spices, like garlic and oregano.

Moussaka is a widely enjoyed casserole, baked in layers of eggplant and lamb, covered in béchamel sauce, a white sauce white sauce made with butter and flour cooked in milk.

Loukanika, a meal of pork sausages soaked in red wine, seasoned with coriander and pepper.

Yemista, a dish of stuffed vegetables such as peppers, tomatoes, onions, courgettes, aubergines or courgette petals.

The typical Cypriot cuisine, with its multi-faceted history, is incredibly diverse.

Cyprus coffee is a characteristic part of the island’s culture, unique and unlike coffee served in Europe.

Seafood

Main Courses

Souvla, large pieces of pork, lamb or chicken cooked on a long skewer over a charcoal barbecue, garnished with oregano, lemon and salt and typically stuffed into a pitta.

Souvlaki is Souvla with smaller pieces of meat, grilled bread as an option, more garnishes and sauces as well as fried potatoes. For tourists, souvlaki may be made with meat such as lamb, beef, chicken and sometimes fish (especially swordfish).

Gyros is grilled meat slices instead of chunks, using different salads or dressings.

Sheftalia is a traditional Cypriot crépinette, a sausage without skin, using caul fat, or omentum, the membrane that surrounds the stomach of pig or lamb, to wrap the ingredients rather than sausage casing and grilled like a kebab.

Kleftiko is a traditional lamb dish that’s prepared baked in a kiln and cooked for a minimum of 24 hours in the clay oven while it marinates in a mixture of lemon juice, and cinnamon.

The most traditional fish is cipura, baked in outdoor beehive ovens with special lemon souse. Popular seafood dishes include calamari, cuttlefish, red mullet (parpouni/barbun), sea bass (lavraki/ levrek), and Octopus is also favoured, but as grill or stiffado (stew) with red wine, carrots, tomatoes, and onions.

Desserts

For dessert, the most popular are soutzouko, made from grape juice and nuts; Palouzes, a jelly made out of grape juice; Glyko, preserves of almond, date, apricot, cherry, quince or grapes; Finikia, walnut cakes; Kourabiedes, small almond cakes coated in icing sugar; Melomakarona, honey cakes; Loukoumades, very sweet, small, Cyprus style doughnuts with honey, Kadeifi, Baklava and Galatopureko, very rich, sweet cakes made with honey and a plate of mixed fresh fruit.

Coffee

The traditional coffee is strong, made from fresh, finely ground Brazilian coffee beans (in small, long handled copper pots called mbrikia) that are boiled to form a frothy cream known as “kaimaki” on the top. Most locals drink it in tiny demitasse cups with dissolved sugar (“glikis”) or medium sweet (“metrios”); a brave few drink it unsweetened (“sketos”). Cyprus coffee is served along with a glass of water.

Alcohol

Traditional brandy and zivania are most popular on the island, followed by beer. Zivania is a pomace grape distillate and can be very strong. Commandaria, the oldest wine in continuous production in the world, is a popular dessert wine. Ouzo and raki are also imbibed frequently.

LIMASSOL TODAY: Famous for its unique cultural

The skyline of Limassol (Lemesos), with the inviting Troodos Mountains in the northern distance, has left behind very little evidence of its historical past and given way instead to a modern, cosmopolitan appearance. The protected ancient monuments of the city showcase a rich trail of sanctified artefacts and religion-based tales of the miraculous.

L

Limassol (Lemesos), the southernmost city of Europe, lies on the southern coast of Cyprus. It is the second largest urban area in Cyprus, with an urban population of almost 180,000 (2011). Limassol Port, the largest port in Cyprus, is one of the most active in the Mediterranean. Famous for its unique cultural traditions over at least four millennia, the city has become one of the foremost tourism, trade, and serviceproviding centres in the area.

Limassol was built between two ancient cities, Amathus and Kourion. Limassol Castle gained prominence when Richard the Lionhearted destroyed Amathus in 1191. It is a dominant landmark and tourist attraction. A wide spectrum of activities and a number of museums and archaeological sites are available to the interested visitor. Limassol attracts a large volume of tourists during summer and faces no problem re accommodation, with a vast array of hotels and apartments available. It is also a very popular medical resort, with highly specialised medical facilities and Doctors readily available.

Limassol is the base for many of the island’s wine companies, serving the winegrowing regions on the southern slopes of the Troodos Mountains, the most famous being Commandaria. The wines and brandies of this region are of international

award-winning quality and exported to Europe in large volumes, besides active local and foreign visitor consumption.

Limassol is the biggest industrial centre of the province, with about 350 industrial units concerned with apparel, furniture, shoes, drinks, food, prints, metal industry, electrical devices and more. It is the largest ship management service centre in Europe, with 60+ ship management companies making the most of its liberal shipping tax laws.

Major landmarks are Limassol Castle, the Archaeological Museum, the Folk Art Museum and the Municipal Garden, which has a small zoo and an amphitheatre. Major historical sites are Kolossi Medieval Castle, the ruins of Amathus and Kourion, Agios Nikolaos ton Gaton Convent, the churches of Agia Christina & Agios Mamas and the monasteries of Agioi Anargyri & Agiou Geogiou Alamanou.

Other activities include sunbathing on miles of sun kissed coastline and Blue Flag beaches, all water sports as well as catamaran trips and yachting in the

blue waters of the Mediterranean. Shoppers can hunt for traditional, handmade handicrafts, jewellery, leather goods, etc. Cruises are also popular; Limassol has now become a major stop for cruise ships heading towards any of its seven neighbouring countries and local tourists are following suit. Nightlife in Limassol reverberates until the early morning, with party goers and others who prefer chilling out with friends frequenting the Limassol tourist area, where there are a large number of pubs, bars and cafes playing various types of music.

Future projects include raising Garillis Park, the Olympion Coast, the Peace Square, the Akteon– a recreational centre at the embankment area of Limassol– improving Limassol Marina and more. ■

Dassoudi Beach: Dassoudi, the

Blue Flag main town beach of Limassol, is a 3 km flat stretch of dark, coarse sand and pebbles where you can see fish swimming in the clear blue water. It has a lovely Eucalyptus forest as a backdrop, backed by small, well kept parks for tourists and picnickers.

Lady’s Mile Beach: Lady’s Mile is a 7km stretch of undeveloped flat sand sandwiched between the sea and Akrotiri salt lake, a stopping off point for migratory birds and a winter home for thousands of flamingos. The port end of the beach is mostly pebble, but the other end is fine sand with a shallow incline into the water, making it suitable for toddlers and weak swimmers. All tourist facilities are available.

Button Beach: South of Lady’s

Mile lies Button Beach, an unspoiled area more popular with Cypriots than tourists.

The Holy Monastery of St Nicholas of the Cats, first built in 327AD, was so named after the many cats bred there to try and combat snakes. The snakes have gone but the cats remain — in plenty!

Avdimou Beach: 16km west of Kourion is Avdimou beach. It is wide, sandy, more protected than Kourion and much safer for swimming, but with little by way of shade. The sea is shallow here and good for children. A beach taverna opens in the summer with the usual basic menu. There is no bus service though, so a car is needed for a visit.

of Avdimou and midway between Limassol and Paphos. Several bars and tavernas hold popular Cyprus nights and the beach, with the usual water sports and tavernas, is very much a tourist resort, with numbers swelling to more than 1,000 each summer. The centre of the beach is the busiest as it sweeps around the bay for a kilometre in both directions. Pissouri is a popular winter holiday location too with tavernas open for the New Year.

Ayios Ermogenis Beach:

The Blue Flag beach of Ayios Ermogenis, also known as the Kourion beach, is located in the Erimi area of Limassol facing the 4th Century AD chapel of Ayios Ermogenis. Some 17km from Limassol, it is a very large organised beach but the southern end of Kourion beach is unsafe for all but the strongest swimmers. Prominent signs warn of the dangers. The northern end is much safer.

Paramali Beach: Paramali Beach is a two-km beach, the southern half of which falls in the British Overseas Territory of Akrotiri. It offers sun and sand for the tan types to laze on, as well as scope for the active types who love to hit the waves. One of the few beaches where the winds pick up and the waves get rough, it lives up to its standing as one of the best kitesurfing beaches on the island.

Governor’s Beach: Some 30 km east of Limassol off the Nicosia/Limasol highway, Governor’s Beach has a daily bus service. The waters are shallow, so it’s fine for children and there is an area of spectacular white rocks for those who like snorkelling. Good walks on nature trails abound in the hills nearby. ■

from the late 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century. The museum is housed in a listed building, located in central Limassol.

The Museum hosts rich and remarkable collections of garments, embroidery, wood carved creations, agricultural and tools and utensils, jewellery, decoration artifacts and furniture of the late 19th and the early 20th century.

Some of the artifacts the Museum hosts are woodcut chests, chests of drawers, pictures made with silk cocoons, traditional Cypriot costumes, lamps, baskets, swords, bronze pots, small stools, bronze plates, etc. A collection of donated porcelain is exhibited in one of the halls of the museum. The collection consists of thirty (30) dishes of varying styles, some of which date back to 1725. Their opening hours are Monday to Friday, 07.45 to 14.45.

KOURION:

from antiquity to contemporaneous Kourion, or Curium in Latin, is an ancient city on the southwestern coast of Cyprus. Though occupied way back in 10,000 BC, the town itself was founded in the 13th century B. C. Between 500 B.C. and 1960 A.D., it was ruled by the global ruler of that time, indicative of many regional conflicts. Christianity was introduced during the visit of Saints Paul and Barnabas in 45 A.D., during Roman rule.

Today, it is an impressive archaeological site 13 km west of Limassol containing mostly ancient Roman and Byzantine ruins, lying atop or tucked into a one hundred metre high limestone promontory along the coast of Episkopi Bay. Kourion, a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies within the British Overseas Territory of Akrotiri and Dhekelia, but the archaeological area and all antiquities are managed by the Cyprus Department of Antiquity.

Excavations have revealed the following sites: The Agora: The Roman Agora, an early 3rd century A.D. structure is an impressive public bath and a Nymphaeum, surrounded on both sides by porticos with marble columns.

The House of Achilles: A Roman villa of the first half of the 4th century A.D., it has several rooms decorated with mosaic floors, most probably a civic reception centre for distinguished visitors. Only part of the building is preserved today.

The House of the Gladiators: This Roman house, dating back to the second half of the 3rd century A.D., is adjacent to the

The Ancient Theatre: The most memorable site at Kourion today, the ancient theatre is still intact and able to seat up to 3,500 spectators, its curved auditorium dating back to the 2nd century B. C. Damaged in an earthquake, it was restored in the second or third century A. D. The stage preserves its foundations but originally rose to the full height of the auditorium. Today the theatre is used for cultural events.

House of Achilles. It has a central courtyard with several mosaic laid corridors.

The Baths and Complex of Eustolios: The complex of Eustolios, at the southeast end of Kourion, was the residence of a rich inhabitant of the town and dates to end 4th century-early 5th century A. D. It consists of over 30 rooms surrounding two courtyards and a bath establishment, embellished by a group of mosaic pavements.

Though built as a private elite residence, it was converted into a public bathing facility early 5th century.

The Early Christian Basilica: Located in the northwest area, a three-apse basilica was constructed late 5th century. It was destroyed by the Arabs in mid‑7th century.

Its remains were transferred to the newlyerected church of neighbouring Episkopi.

The Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates: Located about 2 km west of Kourion, the sanctuary was one of the main religious centres of ancient Cyprus where Apollo was worshipped. This temple was abandoned in the 4th century A.D. The Stadium: The ruins of the ancient stadium lie east of the sanctuary of Apollo. The stadium is U-shaped and accommodated around 6,000 spectators.

Built in the 2nd century A.D., it was used until the end of the 5th century.

Cypriot cuisine is closely related to Greek cuisine, and influenced by food habits of its past inhabitants, as reflected in myriad cuisines combined into signature Mediterranean and International gastronomy. shaped village, 37 km from Limassol and at an altitude of 1100 metres was named after the Monastery of Great Agros, built where the Church of Panayia of Agros is found today. Apparently, 40 monks from Kizikos of Minor Asia (Modern-day Turkey) abandoned the Monastery of Megalos Agros and arrived at Agros Cyprus carrying the icon of the Holy Mother during the era of Byzantine Iconoclasm in the 8th and 9th centuries. The monks then built the new Monastery of “Great Agros.” It was eventually ruined by fire in 1894, and left the village with only remembrances of the great monastery.

around Limassol Apesia: The history of Apesia begins thousands of years back, when the first residents settled here from Apesos of Asia Minor. This history is confirmed by the gravestone columns with Greek inscriptions in the yard of the school and church, as well as ancient Roman tombs. Findings as well as cultural remains reveal that the area had residents during the Neolithic, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine period, as well as during the Frankish and Venetian occupation.

The village name seems to be related to Apesos of Asia Minor. Apesia shows how traditional elements coexist with modern ones. On the one side there is a traditional housing with small stone built residences and on the other, there are new bigger residences spread west and southwest of the old housing.

Omodos: A picturesque winemak-

ing village, Omodos lies 42 km NW from Limassol. The large plaza in front of the Monastery of the Holy Cross (Timios Stavros Monastery), the medieval winepress, the narrow alleys, and the stonemade houses lend a special aura to the village, at an altitude of 810 m. Omodos is renowned for its superb grapes, tasty wines, zivania and many Must-based delicacies like soutzoukos, palouze, etc. The

Monastery houses a piece of the bloodstained Holy Rope, used to tie Jesus to the cross at Calvary.

Laneia: Laneia, at the foot of Mount Troodos about 26 km from Limassol, is one of the country’s main wine producing villages. Probably named after Lana, daughter of the Greek wine god, Dionysus, the village is well known for the high quality of its grapes and wines. Apart from wine, the locals also produce olive oil. Laneia has retained an ancient Linos circular stone olive press next to its church. This church, dedicated to St. Mary, hosts the Icon of Saint Mary of Valanas.

Agios Amvrosios: Situated

27 km north-west of Limassol, the village is known for its wine culture due to its ecological winery which produces high quality wines. Naturally beautiful, Agios Amvrosios is considered as one of “The Limassol Wine Villages,” and very restful.

The river Kryos, a tributary of the Kouris river “captures” water from the Paramali river, one of the very few classic examples of a “river capture” in Cyprus. The village hosts the 11th century chapel of Saint George, the 14th century church of Saint Amvrosios and the chapel of Saint Elisabeth with the Byzantine frescos.

Pelendri: Pelendri village, 40 km north of Limassol & a settlement since medieval times, is a charming villages in Cyprus that protects its architectural folkloric style. Modern buildings have come up; however, in the village centre, many traditional houses are seen, built with local stone “gabbrou”. Pelendri, is the largest district of Limassol in terms of population, volume of Byzantine heritage and the number of icons. Pelendri is also known for its unique churches and chapels. The church of the Timios Stavros is part of the global cultural heritage of UNESCO; Panayia Catholiki, with its 16th century icons, is a protected monument; Ayios Ioannis Lampadistis with its large dome rooftop, is visible from afar, and Archangel Michael church is a modern church. ■

The old Greek ritual of Plate Smashing spread into Cyprus. At weddings, parties and celebrations, knives were thrown towards the feet of performing artists while shouting “Opa!” to signify approval. After many mishaps and injuries, plates replaced knives and were thrown to the floor and smashed whilst singing and dancing. Plate smashing may still be found in some parts of Cyprus; this tradition has now been replaced by the throwing of flowers, given the obvious ‘safety’ factor. In many bouzoukia or other modern establishments, girls with baskets or plates with flowers will go around the tables and sell them to the customers, who then throw them to the performers on stage.

The kompoloi, or string of beads, is a familiar sight in the hands of many Cypriot men. The word komboloi incorporates the word kombos, meaning the knot. The string of beads is always made with an uneven number of beads. The kompoloi is said to reflect a way of life; it is certainly relaxing. The beads can be bought in many weights, sizes, colours, and materials and can make a nice gift.

Tavli is a Cyprus table top board game. Tavli used to be the preserve of only men, but times have changed and many women now enjoy playing tavli with friends especially in the cities and towns. However, in villages, a kafenion — ​the local village gathering place and a traditional refuge of the Cypriot male and the nearest thing to a UK pub — ​is still looked upon as the gathering place for men where they can play card games.

Tuesday 13th: Unlike western belief, in Cyprus the unlucky day is Tuesday the 13th, not Friday the 13th.

Matiasma: Some Cypriots believe that you can catch the Evil Eye, or ‘matiasma’, from someone else’s jealous compliment or envy. To avoid the matiasma, believers often wear a charm; a little blue marble glass with an eye painted on it or a blue bracelet. Blue is believed to be the colour that wards off the Evil Eye. It is, however, also believed that people with blue eyes are the givers of the matiasma.

Kallikantzaroi are supposedly goblinlike creatures that live in the centre of the earth and find their way into people’s homes via the chimney. Cypriots believe that they make all kinds of mischief such as dousing the fire, riding on people’s backs, braiding the tails of horses and souring milk. It is also believed that they visit only at Christmas. In order to keep the Kallikantzaroi away, the hearth is kept burning day and night throughout the 12 days of Christmas. Additionally, a family member will go around the house every day during these 12 days and bless the house, whilst sprinkling holy water around for protection.

Ceremonies

Birthdays are not such a celebrated event in Cyprus as elsewhere; however, Name Days are. Children are typically named after the Patron Saint of their region. The Name Day is the feast day of the saint after which a child was named. A party is thrown on a person’s Name Day. Invites are not usually given — ​friends, family and neighbors are just expected to visit. A small gift is customary.

As each Orthodox Church is named after a saint there will be celebrations on its Name Day, known as ‘Panigiria’.

The celebrations will include food, fireworks and stall-holders may gather in the

grounds of the patron saint’s church to sell local delicacies.

Weddings in Cyprus are huge with over 1000 guests. The marriage takes place at 4pm or later, mainly due to summer heat. The bride and groom get ready separately; the maid of honour (Koumbara) and best man (Koumbaros) help the bride and groom to get ready.

A red piece of cloth is tied and untied around the waist of the bride and groom several times as a sign of fertility. During the church ceremony, the bride and the groom wear headbands called Stefana.

The priest leads the couple round the table, on which the Gospel and the Cross are placed, three times. The Koumbaros and Koumbara walk behind the married couple holding the Stefanas in place in the dance of Isaiah. The wedding rings, which are worn on the fourth finger of the right hand are exchanged three times.

ПАЛЕХОРИ — ​ история с VI века!

На юго-западе Кипра находится горный массив Троодос — одно из самых красивых мест острова. Нигде на Кипре больше нет такого множества живописных долин и быстрых горных речушек, по берегам которых раскинулись небольшие селения. В средние века горы Троодоса служили убежищем от частых набегов арабов, и постепенно здесь

Построенный через реку мост, представляет собой современную дорогу, соединяющую две деревни. История их возникновения переносит нас во времена Византийской империи, когда эти деревни входили в разные административные районы. бавляют, что это Палехори Морфу или Палехори Оринис. Сейчас точно установленно, что Палехори значительно старше окрестных деревень. Были найдены древние сосуды и монета, отчеканенная при византийском императоре Юстиниане в 563/64 годах, которые свидетельствуют о существовании на этом месте древнего поселения. Исторические источники, имеющиеся в распоряжении исследователей, редко упоминают о деревне, но когда это происходит, то в основном относится к Палехори Оринис. От византийского периода, который закончился в 1191 году высадкой на остров крестоносцев, не сохранилось ни одного доку-

мента. Очень мало источников осталось и от правления франкских королей династии Лузиньянов (1192–1489 гг.). При венецианцах (1489–1570 гг.), количество документов несколько увеличилось. Они в основном касаются наследственной передачи феодов (земельных владений) семьям аристократов, но иногда содержат и некоторые данные относительно экономики и населения. Начиная с конца XV века увеличивается число исторических источников, относящихся к церковному наследию, благодаря чему знания об этом периоде значительно обогатились. И С Т О РИ Я В последние годы туркократии, но в основном уже при английском правлении, в Палехори, так же как и по всему острову, наблюдается экономический подъем, прирост населения, повышение уровня образования. В деревне был открыт полицейский участок, суд, врачебный кабинет. Палехори всегда шла в ногу со временем. Некоторые из ее жителей участвовали в двух мировых войнах, в освободительной борьбе против английских колонизаторов, отражали турецкую агрессию. В наши дни, как и во многих сельскохозяйственных районах Кипра, большая часть населения деревни перебралась в город. В декабре 2001 года на заседании ЮНЕСКО в Хельсинки было принято решение о включении этой церкви в список Памятников Всемирного Наследия ЮНЕСКО. Церковь Святых Бессребренников находится в местности, называемой Маруллена, северо-восточнее Палехори, на месте старого одноименного поселения. Церковь Святых Бессребренников — ​ это двухнефная базилика с позднейшими пристройками. Росписи сохранились лишь на северной стене. Они датируются первой четвертью XVI века. От иконостаса, выполненного около 1600 года, до наших дней дошли лишь отдельные фрагменты. Церковь Апостола Луки представляет собой трехнефную базилику с куполом в центральном нефе и с эксонартексом на западе. Храм был возведен на месте более старого с итало-византийскими росписями, который снесли в 1924 году. Старинный иконостас, выполненный в 1893–1894 гг., перенесли в новую церковь с некоторыми добавлениями и с подписью мастера резьбы по дереву — ​С. Талиадору. Очень красиво смотрятся узкие, выложенные камнем дорожки, как бы обрисовывающие контуры горы. Они остались в наследство от тех времен, когда люди с уважением относились к окружающей их природе и не пытались ее переделывать. В Палехори есть много зданий, сохранивших самобытную архитектуру, но все же, за последние десятилетия многое было утрачено. Власти прилагают усилия, чтобы устранить, или хотя бы изменить элементы современной

Южнее храма Апостола Луки находится здание бывшей школы, построенное в XIX веке. Сейчас здесь помещается библиотека. В другой старой школе открыт Культурный Центр деревни. АТЛАНТИДА на Кипре? Споры о легендарном острове Атлантида, на котором располагался город атлантов, не умолкают вот уже два тысячелетия — с тех пор, как великий Платон рассказал о нем в своих диалогах «Тимей» и «Критий».

том, где находилась Атлантида и где искать то, что от нее могло остаться, гадают до сих пор. Атлантиду ищут в Атлантике возле Марокко, в Андах, в Бразилии, в Ирландии, в Румынии и даже в Антарктиде! Многие исследователи искали Атлантиду в районе Балеарских и Канарских островов. Один из исследователей выдвинул версию, что Атлантида располагалась на месте нынешних Британских островов и Ирландии, а утонула в результате таяния ледников. Знаменитому подводному исследователю Жаку-Иву Кусто почти удалось доказать, что найденные на дне Средиземного моря остатки минойской цивилизации принадлежат именно погибшей Атлантиде. Исследователь Роберт Сармаст обнаружил под водой в 11 км от Кипра прямоугольный пласт земли, простирающийся к северо-востоку в сторону Сирии. Он утверждает, что именно остров Кипр был вершиной холма и частью Атлантиды. Почему Роберт Сармаст решил искать Атлантиду на Кипре? Можно заметить, что, прежде всего, описание Атлантиды напоминает как по рельефу, так и по природным условиям острова Средиземного моря. Платон пишет, что Атлантида была богата металлами. Подобная характеристика не свойственна островам Атлантического океана, зато в древние времена была присуща Кипру. Многие исследователи считают, что острова Средиземного моря — это осколки затонувшей цивилизации. В качестве примера приводят и высокоразвитую критскую цивилизацию, тоже погибшую внезапно при сильнейшем землетрясении. В своих диалогах Платон сообщает, что Атлантида исчезла в течение одного дня и одной трагической ночи — «за одни ужасные сутки». Приступая к описанию Атлантиды, Платон предупреждает, что название самого острова, как и все другие имена в его рассказе, не подлинные, а переведенные на греческий язык. Египтяне, которые первыми писали историю Атлантиды, перевели аланские имена на свой лад. Солон

(афинский политик, законодатель и один из «семи мудрецов» Древней Греции), который и сообщил Платону сведения об этом острове, не видел надобности сохранять египетские названия и перевел их на греческий язык. А сама история острова, по легенде, начинается с рассказа о разделе Земли между тремя богами-братьями: Зевсом, Аидом и Посейдоном. Посейдону, ставшему повелителем морей, по жребию и достался остров Атлантида, на котором тогда жили только три смертных человека — «один из мужей по имени Евнор, в самом начале произведенный на свет Землею, с женой Ливкиппой и их дочерью — красавицей Клейто». Посейдон влюбился в Клейто, она стала его супругой и родила пять пар близнецов — первых десятерых царей Атлантиды. Как заботливый отец, Посейдон для защиты обнес остров тремя водными и двумя сухопутными кольцами, атланты же перекинули через эти кольца мосты и прорыли каналы, так что корабли могли по ним подплывать к самому городу или, точнее, к центральному острову, имевшему 5 стадиев (немногим менее километра) в диаметре. Также, по преданию, он источил из земли теплый и холодный родники с удивительной на вкус и целительной по силе водой, а плодородная земля давала разнообразное и достаточное для жизни пропитание. На острове Посейдон соорудил для Клейто и себя храмы, украшенные серебром и золотом и окруженные золотыми статуями, а также роскошный царский дворец. Полагают, что остров Атлантида находился на значительном возвышении над уровнем моря, а берег был обрывистым и высоким. Кругом столицы простиралась равнина, окруженная горами, доходившими до моря. Об этой равнине ходили сказания как о самом красивом и плодородном месте на земле. В диалоге Платона «Тимей» афинский политический деятель Критий повествует о войне Афин с Атлантидой, якобы со слов своего деда Крития-старшего, которому, в свою очередь, пересказал

историю Солон, услышавший ее от жрецов в Египте. Суть рассказа такова: в те времена, когда Афины были наиболее славным, могущественным и добродетельным государством, главным их соперником была упомянутая Атлантида. На острове возникло удивительное по величине и могуществу царство, владевшее всей Ливией до Египта и Европой до Тиррении (запад Италии). Все силы этого царства были брошены на порабощение Афин. Вскоре, однако, произошло грандиозное разрушительное землетрясение, за которым последовали сильнейшие наводнения, в результате которых остров был поглощен морем в один день вместе со своими жителями — атлантами. Платон указывает время катастрофы как «9 000 лет назад», то есть около 9500 г. до н. э.

Есть ли шансы найти Атлантиду?

Скорее всего, за это время стены и постройки города, если бы они и сохранились, под воздействием морской воды изменились до неузнаваемости, покрылись илистыми наносами, заросли водорослями, актиниями и кораллами; металлические и медные предметы растворились, а деревянные конструкции исчезли через несколько столетий после катастрофы. Кроме того, в Средиземноморском регионе за эти тысячелетия случилось не одно сильнейшее землетрясение, череда которых, вероятно, окончательно стерли руины загадочного острова. Была ли Атлантида реальностью или всего лишь фантазией Платона, который пытался описать идеальное государство, — нам уже этого не узнать, но, может, прав был его ученик Аристотель, сказавший: «Тот, кто Атлантиду выдумал, тот и отправил ее на дно морское».

Виноделие на Кипре существует уже около пяти тысяч лет. Тому

свидетельствуют археологические раскопки в одной из деревушек близ Лимассола, где были найдены кувшины для хранения вина. После радиоуглеродного анализа удалось установить, что их возраст составляет около трех тысяч лет до нашей эры. Опыт и традиции у кипрского вина

колоссальны. Давайте вспомним несколько ключевых вех в истории Кипра,

непосредственно отразившихся на виноделие.

Кипр всегда был важным аванпостом в средиземном море и на своей земле повидал огромное количество цивилизаций и народностей. Скорее всего, первыми виноград на Кипр привезли Финикийцы, так же как на Крит и греческие острова, а затем его стали выращивать на самой материковой части Греции. Греческие или, точнее, античные традиции виноделия, крепко укоренились и дают о себе знать по сей день. Может быть, из тех времен или все-таки из пережитков средневековья осталась эта традиция любить и делать хорошее молодое вино!? Дело в том, что на Кипре многие виноделы высокого уровня действительно очень ценят и гордятся своим молодым вином, так как именно в нем раскрывается вся полнота вкуса, аромата и особенности определенного субрегиона или терруара, то есть совокупности почвы, климата и местности. Безусловно, вина выдержанные всегда были и будут цениться во все времена, как продукт элитарного, коллекционного, эксклюзивного и утонченного характера. Но

во многом это стало доступно благодаря технологиям и развитию винной отросли, как таковой. В давние времена для того, чтобы сохранить вино, в него добавляли различные натуральные консерванты: гипс, золу, соль, размельченную в порошок белую глину (сейчас этот материал так же используют, но под более научным названием — ​ бентонит), оливковое масло, молотый миндаль, кедровые орехи, семена укропа, тимьян, корицу, мед, смолу акации и не только это… Безусловно, вино выдерживалось и сохранялось многие года, но можно легко представить, как эти ингредиенты влияли на вкус и аромат напитка. А в средние века и тем хуже: повсюду отсутствовала гигиена, а самым лучшим консервантом было слово божье, и поэтому если у торговца или производителя оставалось вино прошлого, или на крайний случай позапрошлого урожая, то его продавали

по самым бросовым ценам, так как оно уже скисало, портилось и превращалось в уксус. Следуя вышесказанному, становится понятно, что в древние времена молодое вино само собой ценилось больше из практических интересов, а сейчас это в некотором смысле визитная карточка свежести и особенного вкуса винодела.

После прекрасных античных времен, рождения Афродиты и расцвета эллинистических государств на Кипре наступает продолжительная борьба с арабским влиянием. В 1191 году Кипр захватывает Ричард Львиное Сердце, наступает приход франков и западноевропейской цивилизации. Остались поразительные источники, рассказывающие нам о, наверное, первой дегустации вина. В 1213 году в Шампани прошел невиданный доселе пир. Король Франции Филипп II Август собрал вина со всех своих и дружественных владений, чтобы узнать какое же из них лучшее. Победило именно великое кипрское вино Коммандария! Сахар в те времена был крайне ценным продуктом, а Коммандария напиток с удивительным натуральным сладким вкусом, да еще и способный пережить многие года хранения и выдержки. Конечно, такое вино было живым золотом. Свое современное название Коммандария получила благодаря ры-

царям-тамплиерам. Производилось вино не так далеко от штаб-квартиры ордена, называющейся La Grande Commanderie. Эти же «воины бога» первыми завезли его во Францию. С того самого торжества до нас дошло рукописное награждение в честь Коммандарии: Суждение вынес государь о винах, И каждому свой титул он присвоил; Так, кипрское вино он сделал Папой, Оно сияло ярче звезд небесных. Под властью Османской империи вино на Кипре было практически под запретом, разрешалось производить только небольшое количество монастырям для ритуальных нужд, и производили всю ту же Коммандарию, то есть продолжались традиции создания лишь сладких крепленых вин. На протяжении XIX и большей части XX вв. виноделие на Кипре в отличие от всего мира развивалось своей спокойной, размеренной жизнью. Но вот в это время и произошла очередная винная победа Кипра.

В середине XIX века из Прованса на юге Франции начинает распространяться беспощадная для виноградной лозы Viteus vitifolii, она же — ​паразитирующая на корнях растения филлоксера, которая погубила около трети всех европейских виноградников, а некоторые регионы, особенно во Франции, обделила и вовсе. Спасение от нее нашли лишь перед самым началом XX века. Лозы винограда стали прививать саженцами от американских клонов, которые имеют иммунитет к этой пакости. Во времена этих ужасных событий, когда американская тля поедала великие виноградники Бургундии и Роны, на Кипре даже не слышали о такой напасти. На Кипр филлоксера так и не добралась! И вина, производимые на виноградниках этого прекрасного острова, дают ягоды с лоз, произрастающих с корневищ, которым около 100 или 150 лет! И даже ту самую великую Коммандарию до сих пор могут производить с тех же лоз, что давали ягоды на создание вина, покорившего монархов Европы в XIII веке. Коммандарию производят из двух автохтонных, растущих только на Кипре, сортов винограда: красный сорт Мавро, придающий вину структуру, плотность, пряный и терпкий вкус, сопряженный со слегка дымным ароматом, и белый сорт Ксинистери, поразительно легкий, фруктовый во вкусе и свежий, мягкий, цветочный в аромате. Из Ксинистери делают прекрасное молодое вино и некоторые виноделы производят Коммандарию из практически стопроцентного Ксинистери, добавляя лишь немного Мавро для структуры. Эта невиданная для многих популярных на сегодня винных регионов преемственность позволяет создавать вина с действительно культовой историей. С 80-х годов XX века на Кипре происходит невероятный скачок в развитии виноделия. Кроме оригинальных сортов Мавро, Ксинистери, Маратефтико, Офталмо, стали активно высаживаться международные сорта винограда Каберне Совиньон, Гренаш, Шираз, Мерло, Кариньян, Матаро, Совиньон Блан, Шардоне, Рислинг и многие др. Стали активно появляться небольшие винодельни, производящие достойное сухое, десертное и крепленое вино.

Важно отметить, что в отличие от крупных заводов, которые находятся в нескольких десятках километров от виноградников, небольшие винодельни располагаются там же, где и произрастает виноград, это позволяет постоянно следить за качеством винограда и доводить его до процесса винификации в наилучшем качестве. Да и сама по себе мобильность, свежий и новаторский взгляд на создание вина, живая, здоровая конкуренция среди молодых производителей очень сильно двигают вперед кипрское виноделие. Связь с Европейским Союзом еще больше приоткрывает двери для сотрудничества в среде виноделов. Постоянное сотрудничество со своими коллегами из Франции, Италии и Испании

позволяет делиться совместным опытом и знаниями, а в виноделии это очень важный аспект. Стоит отметить, что большинство классических сортов неплохо приживаются на Кипре и при должном подходе дают достойные результаты. Но и из международных сортов уже появились явные фавориты, дающие особенно хорошие и выдающиеся результаты. Например, из Шираза, он же Сира, выходят великолепные насыщенные, плотные, но все же по-европейски деликатные сухие вина, а некоторые винодельни производят даже десертные варианты. Каберне Совиньон при хорошей выдержке в дубе отлично раскрывает себя, оставляя свои классические характеристики и приобретая особенности кипрского терруара. Но, конечно, каждая винодельня пытается найти свой фирменный вкус, экспериментируя с купажами из местных и международных сортов. Так, например, очень занятным выглядит ассамбляж из Каберне Совиньон, Матаро (Мурведр) и Гренаш. Условия, при которых растет виноград на Кипре, более чем захватывающие. В основном наилучшие виноградники находятся на высоте от 800 до 1400 м над уровнем моря на известняковых и меловых почвах. При тяжелых условиях роста лоза углубляется в землю, откуда берет самые ценные минеральные вещества и отдает их в виноград. Можно наверняка сказать, что при соединении всех условий, сложившихся на Кипре на сегодняшний день (многовековые традиции и опыт, необыкновенный климат и окружающая среда, старания и современный подход виноделов), кипрское вино еще сможет получить приз лучшего из лучших и радовать нас своей солнечной насыщенностью и морской свежестью. ■

СВЯТОЙ ФАНУРИЙ: указывающий истину

В пригороде Лимассола, в районе Айа Фила, есть храм, о котором мало знают приезжие православные паломники. Это храм святого Фанурия. Главная святыня храма — ​икона святого, за молитвенной помощью которого едут многие православные верующие.

Мученик Фанурий, почти не известный в других странах, глубоко почитаем и любим в Греции и на Кипре. Долгое время святой Фанурий оставался неизвестным миру. Лишь в XVI веке была обретена его икона и христиане узнали о его существовании и той великой силе чудотворения, которая была ему дарована от Господа. Икона святого Фанурия была обретена на острове Родос. Во время расчистки завалов после боев с мусульманами под разрушенными стенами города была обнаружена небольшая, некогда очень красивая, церковь и множество икон. Красочный слой на них был поврежден настолько, что невозможно было разглядеть ни ликов, ни надписей. И только одна икона была совершенно нетронутой и сохранилась в таком хорошем состоянии, что казалось, будто только что вышла из-под кисти живописца. Это было доказательством того, что обретение иконы произошло не по воле случая, а явилось даром Божиим. Весть о находке дошла до митрополита острова — ​владыки Нила. Он поспешил к разрушенному храму и принял икону, на которой было обозначено имя изображенного святого — ​Фанурий. Воистину то было явлением благодати Божией, ведь имя Фанурий означает «являющий» (указывающий, показывающий). Святой был изображен на иконе облаченным в воинские доспехи, с крестом в руке. Над крестом — ​горящая свеча. По периметру иконы, в соответствии с древней традицией, помещены 12 клейм с изображениями мучений святого. Согласно клеймам было составлено и житие святого. Он мужественно исповедовал свою веру во Христа перед римским правителем, был подвергнут пыткам и побиению камнями и палками, терзаем железными орудиями в темнице, огромным валуном его тело было придавлено к земле, его кидали диким зверям но, вместо того, чтобы растерзать его, они пытались ему помочь. Беснующаяся толпа язычников выламывала ему кости. Все это он претерпевал, моля Бога дать ему сил до конца. После пыток он не отрекся от Христа и отказался принести жертву идолам. На последнем клейме святой Фанурий изображен стоящим на горящих поленьях, весь охваченный пламенем. И здесь, претерпевая последнее мучение, он остается спокойным и невозмутимым, а в молитве

обращается к Тому, Кто Сам претерпел великие страдания — ​ к Иисусу Христу, благодарит за великий венец мученичества и прославляет Бога. Предполагают, что святой Фанурий родился в благочестивой семье и был воспитан в православной вере, получил хорошее образование и занял должность военачальника. Пострадал за веру он, скорее всего, в первые века христианства (II–III вв.), о чем свидетельствует характер пыток, которым его подвергали. Владыка Нил, не убоявшись трудностей дальнего пути, поехал в Константинополь и добился у самого султана разрешения на возведение храма в честь святого Фанурия на том самом месте, где были найдены развалины и обрели икону.

Этот храм на Родосе сохранился до наших дней и принимает множество паломников, приезжающих поклониться чудотворной иконе мч. Фанурия. Неисчислимы чудеса святого Фанурия. Все обращающиеся к его помощи и заступничеству перед Богом всегда получают просимое, если это желание не противоречит воле Божией. Вот одно из таких чудес. Во времена, когда остров Крит находился под властью венецианцев-католиков, православным архиереям не дозволялось там совершать богослужения. Когда умирал православный владыка, поставлять нового не разрешалось. Это делалось для того, чтобы православные со временем остались бы без пастырей и чтобы для них не было иного выхода, кроме как перейти в католичество. Поэтому на Крите все те, кто выбирал путь священства, должны были отправляться на соседний остров Кифиру, чтобы получить хиротонию (рукоположение во священники) от православного архиерея. Так, однажды, три диакона с Крита прибыли к митрополиту Кифиры. Владыка совершил хиротонию и отправил их на родину, пожелав верно служить страждущему критскому народу. На обратном пути корабль захватили мусульмане. Всех пассажиров доставили на остров Родос и там продали в рабство. Услышав, что на Родосе есть чудотворная икона святого Фанурия, они стали с верой и со слезами просить его освободить их от уз и страданий рабской жизни. Они жили в разных местах, и каждый усердно молился о даровании свободы. В конце концов, по промыслу Божию, всем троим хозяева разрешили посетить храм и приложиться к иконе мученика. Мольбы священников были услышаны, и в ту же ночь святой Фанурий явился их хозяевам и приказал освободить узников. Рабовладельцы сделали прямо противоположное: связали рабов цепями и подвергли их ужасным побоям. На следующую ночь мч. Фанурий явился трем иереям и сам освободил их от уз, пообещав, что на следующий день вызволит их и из плена. Утром хозяева и все члены их семей лишились зрения и оказались парализованными. Тогда они стали взывать к священникам о помощи. «Сами мы помочь вам ничем не можем, — ​последовал ответ, — ​но помолимся Господу, и Он совершит то, что должно свершиться». На следующую ночь святой Фанурий явился во сне хозяевам и сказал: «Если не отпустите священников, как вам было сказано, если не принесете письменное уведомление об их освобождении в мой храм — ​останетесь неисцеленными». Испуганные хозяева написали каждый по письму, в котором подтверждали свое решение даровать свободу трем рабам-священникам. Посланные от них слуги положили письма у иконы святого. Не успели гонцы вернуться, как трое семей совершенно исцелились. В изумлении от случившегося чуда, они не только освободили священников, но и дали им денег, чтобы те смогли добраться до родного Крита. Бывшие рабы — ​православные иереи — ​поспешили в храм Божий и со слезами благодарили мч. Фанурия за чудо своего освобождения. Перед отъездом они сделали список с иконы и повезли его с собой на Крит. Здесь, на своей родине, они непрестанно славили святого Фанурия.

Неисчислимы чудеса святого Фанурия. Все обращающиеся к его помощи и заступничеству перед Богом всегда получают просимое, если это желание не противоречит воле Божией.

Почитание святого Фанурия породило в народе разного рода благочестивые обычаи, среди которых – ​выпекание на праздник так называемого «пирога святого Фанурия», или по-гречески «фануропитты» (оливковое масло, мука, корица, сахар и вода – ​основные компоненты). Пирог готовят накануне дня памяти святого. После богослужения его разрезают на части и раздают верующим. Такой пирог пекут и в те дни, когда заказывают молебен святому. Память мч. Фанурия совершается по всей Греции 27 августа – ​в день обретения иконы.

По сей день святой совершает множество чудес. Мученик Фанурий незамедлительно помогает тем, кто призывает его с верой и благоговением. Часто к святому обращаются за помощью в случае важной пропажи, просят подсказать выход из сложной ситуации, а также «явить здравие» болящему или просто что-то или когото найти: работу, жилье, спутника жизни. В храме святого Фанурия в Лимассоле служит архимандрит Епифаний, духовник монастыря Богородицы Амасгу и ряда других. Отец Епифаний в свое время подвизался на святой горе Афон, где его духовником был известный всему православному миру афонский подвижник и богослов архимандрит Софроний (Сахаров), чья канонизация в лике святых ожидается в скором времени. Архимандрит Софроний был ученик еще одного великого святого, родом из России — ​Силуана Афонского, а также автором его жития, рассказавшим миру про его жизнь и учение. В силу того, что он продолжатель таких великих духоносных русских людей нашего времени, отец Епифаний питает особые теплые чувства к русским людям, многие из которых приезжают к нему на исповедь и за советом. Исповедует и беседует отец Епифаний на английском и на греческом языках, но немного знает и русский язык. Святой Фанурий, моли Бога о нас!

КАК ПОЛУЧИТЬ европейское гражданство?

ммиграционная политика Кипра и условия инвестиционной программы получения гражданства меняется довольно часто. Последние изменения датируются ноябрем 2016 года: теперь, чтобы стать счастливым обладателем кипрского паспорта достаточно инвестировать в экономику острова два миллиона Евро.

Привилегии гражданина

Перед рассказом о том, как получить паспорт, мы хотим напомнить о преимуществах, которые он дает. Самый большой плюс заключается в том, что наличие этого документа дает право на посещение 159 стран мира без всяких виз и разрешений. Но это не все! Получив паспорт гражданина Кипра, вы получаете право на проживание, работу и получение образования во всех странах Евросоюза. Налоговые и социальные льготы ЕС — ​это еще один приятный бонус. Процедура получения гражданства для членов семьи гражданина Кипра превращается по сути в формальную процедуру. И еще одна хорошая новость: больше нет необходимости в по-

стоянном проживании на территории Кипра. Разве что вы сами не захотите покидать остров.

Гражданство по пунктам

Новые правила инвестиционной программы гарантируют короткие сроки получения паспорта — о ​ т трех до шести месяцев — ​и дают кандидату на получение гражданства несколько вариантов получения заветного документа. Первый вариант предполагает инвестиции в недвижимость на сумму не менее 2 000 000 Евро. Объектом покупки может быть как готовое здание, так и строящееся. Второй вариант — в ​ ложение средств в компанию, занимающейся бизнесом не территории Кипра, в которой трудоустроены миниму 5 граждан острова. Минимальная сумма инвестиций не меняется — э​ то 2 000 000 Евро. Для получения гражданства можно инвестировать — с​ умма не меняется — ​ в инвестиционные фонды или финансовые активы кипрских предприятий или организаций, у которых есть лицензия Комиссии по ценным бумагам и биржам. Или купить облигации, акции или ценные бумаги кипрских компаний. Сумма вложений? Не меньше двух

миллионов Евро. Можно комбинировать предложенные выше варианты, чтобы общая сумма вложений в экономику превысила два миллиона Евро. Например, купить на 1,5 миллиона Евро недвижимости и добавить к этому покупку государственных облигаций Кипра на полмиллиона Евро.

Дополнительные условия

Обратите внимание на то, что, какой бы из вариантов вы не выбрали, участник инвестиционной программы получения гражданства должен обеспечить себя жильем на Кипре и купить для постоянного проживания и пожизненного владения квартиру или дом стоимостью не менее 500 000 Евро.
