What can I study? Where am I going?

How much will it cost? And how will I get there?

These are questions most students ask when they are about to complete their schooling.

For 25 years counsellors at Macphersons (MES) have been assisting students to find the answers, and together with their partner institutions, have prepared this Magazine as a guide for students. The counsellors also advise on Post Graduate study options for students.

The list of options of courses available is constantly expanding. The key is to understand your strengths and how to utilise them to ensure you have chosen the best career path. The counsellors at Macphersons work with you and with the institutions to guide you to find that career path. All our services are free of charge as the institutions fund us to assist their students.

To date, students have been successfully placed in tertiary institutions

in Australia, Canada, Malaysia, Mauritus, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Kingdom. Recently MES have also offered students an option in the Netherlands.

The Macphersons Team provides free assistance with: • Identifying the most appropriate progam for the student, elaborating on the pre-requisites and outcomes of the course; • Selecting an institution to fit in with the student’s academic qualifications and financial capacity; • Finalising the application process; • Identifying and securing suitable accommodation; and, • The process of obtaining a student visa.

Macphersons also provide a detailed predeparture briefing to ensure the students understand the climatic conditions, cultural norms and other living conditions in the destination country.

The Macpherson journey:

25 years as education counsellors For 25 years the Macpherson Education Services (MES) staff members have been advising students on career choices and the study options leading to those careers. MES represents more than 80 institutions located in Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, the UK and South Africa. MES also represents Australian and UK universities with campuses in Malaysia, Mauritius and Dubai.

MES has 6 staff, 3 of whom are graduates from Australian Universities. One staff member has also studied and worked in the UK. MES staff maintain strong professional linkages with faculties, academic and admissions staff at all the institutions represented. MES regularly host representatives from these institutions, and organises exhibitions and visits to schools for the representatives. MES also organises individual appointments for students and parents with the representatives.

The MES approach is to provide objective advice by: • Providing students at Ordinary Level with advice on pre-requisite subjects for university courses to enable them to make informed choices for their Advanced Level studies.

• Counselling Advanced Level students on the threshold of tertiary study, on the options for technical training, Undergraduate and then Post Graduate study in each country.

• Counselling graduates from Zimbabwean universities on the opportunities for Post Graduate study abroad. One staff member has had extensive experience advising Post Graduate students at Masters and PhD level in 28 African countries.

• The staff also assist students with applications for accommodation, with the visa process and provide pre-departure briefings. This assistance is provided free of charge to the students as the institutions support and fund these activities.

Some of the highlights of the MES journey: 1993 Macpherson Consulting Group opened it’s Harare office at 9 Balmoral Gardens.

1997

One of our first students to go to Australia, Mark Taylor, successfully integrating into Australia upon completing his degree.

Subsequently he is advising and assisting many African students in his various roles within Griffith University.

1998 Numerous other students completing prestigious degrees in Medicine, Engineering, Accountancy etc. returning to Zimbabwe or successfully gaining employment elsewhere.

2000 Collaborating closely with the Australian Government to launch and co-manage the Australian Awards training scheme for African students in 2003 and then offering the services of Judith Ward as a Course Research Advisor until 2014.

Facilitating a Program that allowed over 40 Matrons and Senior Sisters at Zimbabwean hospitals to successfully complete a Post Registration Nursing degree offered by Distance Education through USQ.

1999 Establishing close links with leading secondary schools in Zimbabwe

2002 Establishing highly successful Education Exhibitions in Harare and Bulawayo every year since 2002

2011 Working closely with the Australian Embassy in Harare to establish the Australian Alumni Association.

Keeping contact with MES “student families” as we assist each young member to go overseas. Many have been our friends for two decades.

Different Institutions offer similar Programs or Degrees under different names. The entry requirements, the length of the degree and the costs vary from country to country so please check with MES staff regarding the details of the course that interests you. There are also options to study a more technical or practical course at a Tertiary and Further Education Institution (TAFE) in Australia. The table opposite enables students to quickly ascertain if the length of study time and the costs of a course in a Country are viable for them.

Visa requirements: Students need to consider the following factors when applying for a visa: • Nationality of passport • The financial requirements.

• The sponsorship rules.

• Medical examinations.

• English Language requirements- (IELTS testing for UK and Australia).

• The length of the visa process.

These all vary from country to country and according to the type of visa for which a student is applying.

LEGAL Sector

Bachelor of Law A lawyer must have strong reading and comprehension skills to understand the complex information encountered in legal research and documents. A lawyer also requires excellent writing skills for preparing compelling arguments, briefs, motions, and other legal documents. To be successful, a lawyer should possess strong interpersonal skills to communicate to clients and if litigating, to perform in court.

In Australia, South Africa, UK and Zimbabwe law is offered as an undergraduate program.

In North America (US and Canada) Law is only offered as a graduate program. To qualify, students must do an Undergraduate Degree, in any area. Entry to the graduate program is very competitive.

Can a student who has studied outside Zimbabwe still practice Law in Zimbabwe?

Currently, only students who have studied in the SADC region can convert their law degree and practice in Zimbabwe. Graduates from other countries can work in a legal firm although they are not qualified to sign off on any official legal documents or appear in court.

Other Degrees relating to the Legal System include a Bachelor of Criminology, Bachelor of Criminology and Justice and a Bachelor of Forensic Science. The pre-requisites vary between institutions, however excellent writing and reading skills are very important.

Bachelor of Criminology Within a Bachelor of Criminology, a student would study courses such as psychology, criminal law and procedures, policing, punishment, prisons, forensic science, theories of crime, rural crime and juvenile delinquency. A graduate would be equipped to work in; crime prevention agencies, government and policy agencies, border control, correctional facilities, intelligence and security agencies, juvenile justice, the police service and welfare.

Bachelor of Forensic Science Whilst criminology is the study of crime and the motivations behind criminal behaviour, forensic science is an applied science concerned with the law and legal proceedings.

It can include specialist areas such as crime scene investigation, forensic medicine and laboratory sciences. The courses may include forensic chemistry and toxicology (including trace chemical evidence), arson and explosives investigations, analysis of illicit drugs and forensic toxicology reporting. A graduate might choose to work in crime prevention, community development, security, policing, corrections, military services or criminal justice research. A student would usually be required to have A level Chemistry and Maths.

14 COMPUTER SCIENCE SECTOR

Information Technology/Computer Science If you are passionate about computing, your employment opportunities are endless. Every industry requires an IT/computer specialist. IT in itself is ever changing and there is a broad range of university courses to meet every need and interest from creative computing to cyber security to the creation of computational systems.

Generally you would need to study all the fundamentals of IT and have a major in a specialist area. Specialist areas include: Artificial Intelligence, Business Information Systems, Business Analytics, Computer Networks and Security, Computer Science, Cyber Security, Data Science, Data Storage and Protection, Games Design, Mobile Apps Development, Web Development and many more.

Essentially IT meets other disciplines in the following ways: IT + Business = Business Information Systems, Business Analytics, Mobile Apps Development.

Bachelor of Engineering An engineer is concerned with applying scientific knowledge, mathematics, and ingenuity to develop solutions for technical, societal and commercial problems. Engineers use lateral thinking and innovative ideas to create solutions to these problems.

SCIENCEs SECTOR

Students who have studied mathematics and physics, chemistry or biology at A level have a wide range of options of courses (also called degrees) to study at University. These options include courses in the agricultural, animal, engineering, environmental, health or pure science sectors. The engineering options are illustrated on page 16, the environmental options on page 26 and some options in the allied health sector on pages 38 and 39. Other health sector options include degrees in: Audiology, Dentistry, Chiropractic, Emergency Health, Medical Imaging, and Immunology, Optometry, Oral Health Therapy and Medical Radiation Science (Nuclear Medicine, Diagnostic Radiography or Radiation Therapy), Nutrition and Dietetics, Pharmacy, Podiatry, Public Health and Speech Pathology.

Students can also study a number of courses relating to animal health and husbandry. These include Animal Science, Equine Studies, Veterinary Science and Zoology. In agriculture, students can study

Plant Science, Plant Production, Agricultural Production, Agricultural Economics or Rural Science.

Graduates may gain employment in the government or private sectors. This may be in private agricultural companies, public research organizations, on farms or with Non Government Organizations and agricultural development organizations.

Students can also study science courses in the fields of Biomedical Science, Biotechnology and Microbiology. They can then gain employment in the health sectors, in hospitals, or with pharmaceutical or fertilizer companies.

Students who opt to specialize in one specific science subject such as physics, chemistry or biology may also continue with Post Graduate studies and then go into research fields with commercial companies or teach at universities or schools.

CREATIVE SECTOR

What programs of study can I undertake if I enjoy dance, design, music, creative writing or theatre?

Today universities and technical colleges offer many more options for students wanting to study something a “little different”.

Visual and creative arts programs have courses in: • Animation, digital design/media, games design, graphic design and web design • Interior design, contemporary fashion, photography, film and screen media Music programs can cover everything from: • Classical music performance to instrumental • History of classical music, contemporary music, popular music • Music composition to music technology Within an arts degree a student can study creative writing.

For those interested in the theatre there are courses in acting, dance, performing arts and theatre management.

These study options equip a student to work in areas such as marketing, film production, publishing, theatre, radio, television and education. For many programs in the creative sector a student will be required to have a portfolio or an audio-visual presentation.

ARCHITECTUR 26

ARCHITECTURE AND BUILT ENViRONMENT Sector

Bachelor of Architecture Architecture is the conceptualisation and design of individual buildings and urban landscapes in response to existing and emerging economic, technical and social needs. The route to becoming a registered architect varies between countries.

In the UK, it is a lengthy 3 part process. Students must submit a portfolio before being offered a place in an undergraduate course. On completion of the 3-year Undergraduate Degree, they must undertake a period of practical training for a minimum of 24 months. After successfully completing this training and passing a professional examination, graduates can apply to become a registered architect with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Students who wish to study in Australia do not normally have to submit a portfolio. They normally undertake a 3 year Bachelor Degree in Architectural Design or Architectural Science. To qualify as an Architect they undertake a Masters in Architecture (2 years). On completion, they are eligible to work as an architect and may apply to one of 3 organisations to become a registered architect.

There are also a number of other degrees that allow a student to work in the building or landscape field.

Most require the student have a sound knowledge of Maths.

Architectural Technology Students learn about every aspect of architectural design and technology; from reading drawings to producing surveys and understanding sustainable development. They learn to construct designs using CAD in a three-dimensional format and gain the skills to negotiate with planning and building authorities and develop the expertise

to advise them. Graduates can work in Architectural or Construction Firms or in local government.

BUILT ENVIRONMENT Construction Management A degree in construction management includes studying the design and construction processes and the financial and legal procedures involved in the construction of buildings. Construction managers schedule and coordinate all of the design and construction processes

RE AND BUILT including selecting, hiring and supervising trade contractors. They are also responsible for the legal and financial aspects of the project. They lead and coordinate physical infrastructure projects, usually working on site.   Building Surveying A student will learn about core areas of

awareness, providing a detailed understanding of building construction from concept to completion.

The course covers all the key aspects of construction, commercial and domestic measurement, as well as project estimating and management. It also includes risk management.

A Quantity Surveyor is likely to gain employment in government departments, in development and construction companies, in insurance companies and even in mining companies or as a consultant providing services to such organisations.

Property Development The degree enables students to study property development and valuation and property market analysis. Students will study courses such as business law, accounting and economic principles, financial management and sustainability. Graduates can find employment as property developers, property advisors, valuers, market research analysts, property sales and acquisitions, financiers, sustainability consultants, funds manager, property and asset managers.

Real Estate A degree in real estate will give a student an understanding of the built environment and the realities and challenges of the property market.

Students also gain an understanding of the legal issues relating to property ownership. With a degree in real estate, a graduate can work in private practice, commercial organisations, for trusts and heritage organisations, the public sector and local and central government.

Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning.

Students study land use planning, environmental planning and law, an introduction to civil engineering, satellite positioning, spatial information and town planning. Currently graduates with this degree are in high demand and find work in local government, with private consulting firms, community developments, and conservation bodies.

Griffith is one of the most prominent universities on the Gold Coast, which has programs tailored to student’s interests. For example, I am able to specialise in electives such as Global and Refugee Law, which have direct relevance to my future ambitions of becoming an International human rights lawyer.

MEDICINE There are very few places available worldwide for an Undergraduate Degree in Medicine. The cost of most Internationally recognised degrees is very high. The entry requirements are usually 3A’s or 3A*s at Advanced level in mathematics, chemistry and physics or biology. Usually a student must attend an interview, either in person or telephonically, and write a specific entry examination. A limited number of universities offer a Foundation Pathway to Medicine.

Institutions in Canada and the USA offer pre med courses and only offer Medicine as a Post Graduate Degree. In the UK and Australia students may also do a Science or Health related Undergraduate Degree and then a Post Graduate Degree in Medicine.

They would then normally take an extra one or two years to qualify. For these Science or Health related courses, pre-requisites vary, but normally include mathematics, chemistry and physics or biology.

TECHNICAL EDUCATION The Technical and Further Education (TAFE) Colleges in Australia offer students courses that are generally more practical and industry focused than those offered at a university. Students may apply with O levels and start with a Certificate Course and articulate to a Diploma Course. If students complete A levels and have the pre-requisite subjects, they may go directly into the Diploma program.

Students may do a course at TAFE and obtain a Certificate, Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree that qualifies them for employment. Studying at TAFE is also a pathway to university for many students. Students will, in most cases, gain some credit for the courses they have undertaken at TAFE. The amount of credit is dependent on the type of Course and the Institution to which the student is applying. Some TAFE colleges now also offer a limited number of courses leading to a degree.

The Bachelor of Accounting /Commerce is based on accounting methods and compliance with government reporting requirements. Graduates could work in areas such as auditing, cost accounting, investigative accounting, taxation, financial planning, strategic management and management consulting. Many company directors and managers began their careers as accounting graduates, and accountants play a key role in corporate organizational strategy and management. To undertake an Accounting or Commerce Degree, students should have a competency in mathematics and have the ability to pay precise attention to detail.

A Bachelor of Business is generally based on micro economic theory and practice, which is the economics relating to the operation of commercial businesses.

What opportunities are there for graduates of a Bachelor of Business?

Depending on the areas of specialisation, graduates can be employed in marketing, human resource management, international business, tourism management, sports management or real estate management. A student would require some competency in mathematics, although less than for Accounting/Finance. A successful graduate would have the ability to take the initiative and find innovative solutions to problems in the business world.

A Bachelor of Finance incorporates more macroeconomics, such as the theory of interest rate derivation, currency exchange rates and public finance. Graduates would be able to work in fields such as banking, financial consulting and planning, funds management, merchant banking, stock broking, and public sector financial management. A competency in mathematics is desirable for students doing Finance.

Students who are interested working with patients to prevent injuries or to assist with the rehabilitation of injured patients have a number of career options.

Physiotherapy Students who obtain a Bachelor of Physiotherapy can assist patients in the prevention, diagnosis and therapeutic management of pain and disorders of human movement. Many Physiotherapists work with sporting teams to ensure that the players undertake the correct fitness programs, or if injured, undertake the

correct rehabilitation. There are very high entry requirements to study a Bachelor of Physiotherapy. At many institutions, it is 3 A’s in mathematics, chemistry and physics or biology. The programs are usually of 4 years duration, during which a student will gain practical experience in clinics and hospitals. A Physiotherapy student must have excellent communication skills. Students will be examined on their listening and speaking skills where they must demonstrate that they can communicate effectively with patients.

LTH SECTOR Bachelor of Exercise Science and Rehabilitation.

The entry level is slightly less rigorous, although still requires a student to have studied some Science subjects. A graduate can work as an Exercise Physiologist with sporting teams, in government rehabilitation organisations or as a Health Care Officer. Programs are normally of 3 years duration, again with practical placements.

Occupational Therapy An occupational therapist assists people who have sustained an injury or have had a debilitating illness. The therapist will assist people, through directed exercises and specific activities to regain their strength to perform the activities they need to lead a meaningful life.

Students will be required to have a background in science subjects. The program is normally of 4 years duration and will include practical placements.

NURSING Bachelor of Nursing graduates may specialise in a variety of fields such as Children’s’ (Paediatrics) Nursing, Critical/Acute Care, Mental Health, Midwifery, Aged Care, Community Health, Adolescent Care or Primary Health Care. Maths is frequently a pre-requisite for a nursing degree and for some institutions a science subject is also a pre-requisite.

Psychology and Counselling and it can be a very rewarding profession.

Counsellors can work with patients to make changes in their lives in order to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals. They can assist patients by offering them a structured and focused way of addressing their problems, and work with them on developing strategies to overcome obstacles and personal challenges that they are facing.

SOCIAL WORK

A Bachelor of Psychology is a degree about which many students make an enquiry, however to become a qualified psychologist is very challenging. There are very few places available for postgraduate study leading to the qualifications as a psychologist and the process is very competitive. Students must also be registered with the relevant council in the country in which they wish to practise.

It normally takes 5-6 years of study to qualify as a psychologist and in some countries a student must do an internship.

Students should also be aware that they would normally have to do statistics as a subject for a psychology degree and therefore require an A level pass in mathematics. Students who complete a bachelor of psychology can find work in companies as human resource managers, or in marketing departments.

A Bachelor of Counselling The route to becoming a counsellor is less rigorous than to become a psychologist

A Bachelor of Social Work is also a course of interest to many students who wish to work with people. There are two options students can study in the field of Social Science both involve courses in Sociology.

The bachelor of social work is generally 4 years in duration and on completion a student can register as a social worker and work with government and private sector organisations, in hospitals with NGO’s or with Community Groups. The Bachelor of Social Science is normally completed in 3 years and whilst a graduate can also work with people they cannot be registered as a Social Worker.

A Masters of Social Work is also offered at some institutions. Pre-requisites vary, some require the student to have completed a bachelor of social work and for others the pre-requisite is a Bachelors’ Degree in any field. Contact the MES team for specific details.

ENVIRONMENT, EARTH & RESOURCE SECTOR Bachelor of Environmental Management Environmental management is a multidisciplinary degree that focuses on finding solutions to the world’s most pressing environmental problems. It looks at the human impact on the physical and biological environment and searches for solutions to the problems. Graduates may be engaged in environmental planning or

policy. This could involve having an input into the development of environmentally sustainable mining operations, industrial developments and residential or agricultural developments that have an element of environmental risk. Graduates could also be involved in activities connected to climate change adaptation and mitigation.

ARTH & RESOURCE Bachelor of Environmental Science For a Bachelor of Environmental Science degree students are expected to have passes in Mathematics, Chemistry and /or Biology. The course provides graduates with an understanding of global environmental issues. They also have a wider cross-disciplinary understanding of both the scientific and management issues pertaining to the environment. Graduates may work in positions such as Botanists, Biodiversity Managers, Environmental Consultants and as Wild Life Conservation Consultants.

Bachelor of Geography Geography is the study of landscape, people, space, place and environment. It recognises the differences in societies and environments across the world, and also the links between them. Geography integrates both physical science and social science to provide the skills and conceptual frameworks needed to understand the processes that affect both people and the environment. Graduates who major in geography may work as Consultants in the areas of biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and adaptation, disaster risk management and sustainable urban planning.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Students who enjoy computing, digital mapping and graphics may be interested in a degree in GIS. GIS is a system of hardware and software used for storage, retrieval, mapping, and analysis of geographic data. You want to study a Bachelor of Aviation?

This can lead to a career as a commercial pilot or as a manager in the Aviation Industry. To be a commercial pilot, you will need to have completed a Commercial Pilots License (CPL) and the theoretical subjects as required by the regulatory institution.

Graduates of a Bachelor of Aviation Management do not need a pilot’s license and they can be involved in dispatch management, flight scheduling, load and tarmac control, or revenue management.

Entry Requirements: Most institutions require a pass in mathematics and recommend a pass in physics for entry to a Bachelor of Aviation.

A student can also gain a Private (PPL) and a Commercial Pilots License in Zimbabwe before completing the Bachelor of Aviation overseas. The PPL or CPL is internationally recognised and a pilot will usually only have to do the conversion exams (such as Air Law) and a flight test to gain a license in the relevant country.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS When do I apply to a University?

This varies according to the country, however in general most universities will give conditional offers before the final school examination results are released. It is advisable to have AS results and/or predictions of your final A levels.

Many universities will only take final results for courses that have quotas e.g. Medicine. If doing a Foundation or Pathway course you may apply with O level results.

For Australian visa purposes, all Zimbabwean passport holders must have Academic IELTS. Curtin University in Malaysia and Mauritius does not require an English test.

The Canadian universities that MES represents do not require IELTS. Some UK universities that we represent do require IELTs.

How long does it take to get a reply for an application to a university?

This varies from university to university and the time of the submission, some take 2-3 days others several weeks. MES staff monitor the response time and send a request for action to the university if it is delayed.

Can I pay tuition fees by instalments?

The universities generally require payment of the semester (half the yearly fees), or the first trimester fees before you are accepted at the university. You then pay the next semester or trimester in advance of that semester/trimester commencing.

Do I need to do an English language test?

In most cases, you do not need to take an English Language test before you apply for your course if you have minimum of C grade in “O�

Level English. There are however a few courses where IELTs is a specified requirement, such as in health and education.

May I apply to do a study abroad in a different country?

Most universities offer students the chance to do a semester or a year at another university with whom they have a study abroad agreement .

Student normally need to have a credit average or above to be eligible.

My name is Godwin Rugare Matambo and I’m studying Computer Science having begun my foundation with Anglia Ruskin’s foundation partner (CRIC). My foundation year experience with CRIC was amazing. Having progressed onto Anglia Ruskin University successfully, I feel fulfilled because I’ve been equipped with all necessities for my main degree as well as career path. During my time at CRIC I really enjoyed the Interactive Learning Study Skills module. This was a skills based module and it greatly enhanced my knowledge and skills about effective study strategies which are critical to success at university. It tackles the process of organising and taking new information, retaining it and dealing with assessments. A common misconception on this subject to science students such as myself is that the techniques being taught may not be directly relevant to our program, however, these skills can be applied to all fields of study and will guarantee any student a better chance of success in their degree.

To ensure that it really is the best option for you, there are some factors to consider: International Recognition It is very important to verify that the course being offered has international recognition and, if relevant, international accreditation. It is therefore advisable to ask teachers and reputable agents for advice concerning the credibility of an institution and the course it offers.

Although websites can be a powerful tool to assist students research their study options, some less reputable institutions may also use the website to claim they have �World Ranking� and make other claims that are not correct. There are also numerous ranking tables that may not be relevant to your requirements. Students are advised to exercise great caution in believing such claims, and ensure that they can be independently verified.

Cost It is important to consider all costs when deciding if your choice of destination is affordable. costs vary considerably from country to country and between institutions, so they should be factored into your decision. Costs you will incur in addition to the fees include the cost of accommodation, food, clothes, any resources required for the course (such as a computer, protective clothing,) transport, entertainment and medical cover.

You may also have significant costs prior to leaving for your study such as english language tests, medical examinations, visa fees and the airfare to your destination.

Lifestyle Whilst the most important consideration should be the relevance of the course, it is also important to ensure that you will be comfortable in the environment where you are studying. This means finding out about the customs, language, climate, and even the cuisine.

Work Opportunities a. During study.

Countries have different regulations concerning a student’s right to work. It is important that you find out if the Immigration rules allow you to work and for how many days per week whilst you are studying. b. Post study.

Many students prefer to stay in country and work for some time after completing their course. Very few countries offer this option so it is important to check the immigration rules for the country in which you wish to study.

Whilst many students wish to earn extra money during their study, it is important that you do not jeopardise your study by working too many days or hours during term time. Students can work full time in holidays.

During this time, you can earn money to supplement your income without the danger of failing through lack of time to study.

In the current economic climate, many students find it difficult to obtain the level of funding required when studying an Undergraduate Degree overseas. A viable option for these students is to do their Undergraduate Degree in Zimbabwe and then do their Post Graduate studies overseas. Most Zimbabwean degrees are recognised by overseas universities.

The entry requirements vary between institutions. The faculty of each institution

will make an assessment of the student’s award level. They will also consider the relative ranking of the institution the student attended.

If the degree is considered equivalent to a Higher Diploma rather than a Bachelors’ Degree, the student will be required to undertake a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma, then articulate to the Masters Degree. This articulation route does not normally take any longer than via direct entry into the masters. For entry to some institutions, a student may be offered a Pre-Masters Program before commencing the masters and this will usually take an extra semester.

For a number of degrees, especially in business, health and education, there is also a requirement for the student to

have some work experience. Some faculties will also consider what is know as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), that is, work experience in lieu of a Bachelors’ degree Masters by Research (MRes) Applicants for a Masters by Research would normally have to demonstrate that they have achieved an honours 2.1 or 1st and have done some research components in their Bachelors’ Degree.

Doctor of Philosphy (PhD).

Those students who have completed an Honours or Masters Degree with a research component may opt to study a PhD. Normally an applicant is expected to have a proposal outlining the area of research to enable them or the university to identify a potential supervisor. Many institutions will allow you to do the research components in your home country under the supervision of a local academic supervisor.

Professional Doctorate This is a doctorate done by coursework, not research and is usually associated with professions such as Accounts/Business or Education.

Masters in Law (LLM) Students who have completed an Undergraduate Degree in law in Australia, the UK, South Africa or Zimabawe and wish to specialise can undertake an LLM in a specialised field of law e.g Commercial Law, Maritime Law and Human Rights Law. In the UK it is still possible to pursue a LLM even if your Undergraduate Degree was not law.

Juris Doctor (JD) The Juris Doctor Degree is a graduate-entry professional degree in law. It is offered in Australia, Canada and the USA as a professional qualifying program for students who have an Undergraduate Degree in a area other than law. It normally takes 3 years to complete.

GAP YEAR, use it wisely!

Often students find that they may have time in between completion of their A Levels and commencing university. There are many constructive ways to use this time.

1. Volunteering: a. At a firm or business in the area that you are considering for future employment. Many firms may not be able to afford to pay junior staff, however would welcome an extra pair of willing hands whilst you learn about the opportunities in that field. b. With community initiatives to help the disadvantaged. c. Volunteering at sporting or cultural events.

2. Life Skills Development Course: A course can build your confidence, hone your skills and teach you more about the world. You can learn to challenge yourself and to push the boundaries.

You can become part of a community

GLOSSARY Bachelor’s Degrees: The Bachelor’s Degree is the first degree a student undertakes after completing school. It takes three to five years, depending on the course and the country of study, and is usually undertaken at a college or university. The degree is awarded on the successful completion of a requisite number of subjects or units.

Post Graduate Qualifications: This is the term used to describe a course leading to an award such as a Graduate Certificate, Diploma, Master’s Degree or Doctorate (PhD). A student normally undertakes these courses after completion of a relevant Undergraduate Degree.

Course: This is the name given to a Bachelor or Post Graduate Degree outline. It indicates the required number of units or subjects required to graduate and it includes any specific sequence or compulsory subjects required. At some institutions, a course is called a Program.

Major: A major is the specific are of study that a student focuses on within the degree. For instance, it may be finance within a Bachelor of Business.

Majors have a set sequence of compulsory units/ subjects, usually called core units, after which a student can choose other units of interest, usually called electives. Students can do a double major, that is, specialise in two areas such as finance and banking, within the Bachelor of Business.

Minor: A minor means that a student studies a second area of interest, but to a lessor extent than for the major. Most of the units of study will focus on the major. In a Bachelor of Arts, a student may major in communication with a minor in journalism.

Pathway: Pathway programs are designed to bridge the gap between the qualifications obtained

at school and those required for University entry.

Pathway comes in two forms: 1. Foundation (also known as Certificate IV, Tertiary Access Program, UTP I).

Entry is usually based on O Level results – after the program the, students go into first year of their degree program 2. Diploma / First Year Pathway (UTP II, Year 1 Entry). Entry usually based on A Level results; equivalent to the first year of their degree program. When students complete it they go into the second year of their degree program.

Semester: A semester is a specific period of study during the year. It can also be called a session or term. There are normally two semesters or sessions per year. A number of institutions are introducing a trimester option, meaning three periods of study per year. For a trimester program, the students will normally have shorter breaks between semesters.

The configuration of the trimester system varies from institution to institution. The trimester system allows students to complete a degree in less time, usually saving one half to one year of study time.

TAFE (Technical and Further Education). An Australian Institution that is similar to a “polytechnic”.

TAFE provides vocational education and training courses for students who have O or A level results.

The entry point and time taken to do a course depends on the student’s qualifications. Awards include, certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas and associate degrees. Courses usually cost less than a University degree. In some instances they can be used as credits towards a university degree.

Unit: A unit indicates a subject that has a set number of hours of study. Most full-time students undertake 4 units per semester whilst studying for a Bachelor’s Degree.
