Croce Plays Croce

50th Anniversary of “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim”

Friday | Oct. 7, 2022 | 7:30pm A.J. Croce, son of the late folk and rock singer-songwriter Jim Croce, has topped the music charts throughout his own stellar career, releasing ten studio albums that effortlessly transcend multiple genres. His upcoming 50th Anniversary Celebration the album You Don’t Mess Around With Jim has prompted the most affectionate look back yet at his father’s enduring legacy. Croce Plays Croce features a complete set of classics by his father, some of his own tunes, and songs that influenced them both. The show often includes such timeless songs as “Operator,” “You Don’t Mess Around with Jim,” “I’ll Have to Say I Love You in a Song,” “One Less Set of Footsteps,” to name a few.

As a considerate tribute, Croce Plays Croce covered just about everything a fan could expect. With A.J.’s stories and sentiment, though, it was elevated beyond a mere musical homage.

Instead, the evening felt more like a family reunion.

For over 25 years, he’s been a staple of the Michigan music scene. Now he’s bringing his authentic blend of blues, soul and classic rock to audiences around the nation and the world. The story follows the two birds from sunrise to sunset. Watch the birds awaken in their nests on a spring morning, move through the dawn chorus, discover the tree and each other, play and search for food. The world is enchanting, serene and peaceful, reminiscent of a forest. The wonder is captured by the audience sitting on a large forest floor carpet, and soon everyone is involved in the adventure!

LORENZO CULTURAL CENTER Hungry Planet: What the World Eats Aug. 2— Sep. 17, 2022

Photographer Peter Menzel and writer Faith D’Aluisio sat down to dinner with 30 families in 24 different countries. Stories, grocery lists and photos of each family surrounded by a week’s worth of groceries give us snapshots to compare these families with ourselves. This exhibit is comprised of 82 photos (30 family portraits, 52 daily-life images), 30 family captions and 30 family grocery lists.

Join the Conversation: Bring you own grocery list or receipt from your weekly shopping, and we will include it in a display to help tell the story of what we eat here in Macomb County!

Creative Michigan: Making the Mitten Modern Feb. 11—April 29, 2023

World War II was over, and everyone was ready for something fresh and fun. Along came the mid-century modern design period with its sleek, clean lines, bright colors and focus on functionality. A new approach also extended to music with the birth of rock and roll, and Motown. Everything from architecture, furniture, art and music, as well as television, radio and advertising had a modern look that helped people to move on from wartime.

Michigan was a focal point of this intense period of creativity.

The auto industry had an interest in staying on the cutting edge of modern advances and helped to support the expansion of ideas through incubators like the College for Creative Studies and the Cranbrook Art Academy. The growing auto industry also supported the local economy and allowed music and entertainment to flourish.

Join us while we explore the period of 1945—1969 and the advancement that took place during one of the largest periods of growth and creativity in Michigan’s history! Through artifacts, displays, speakers and events, we will delve into topics like the Eames chair, muscle cars, Motown hits and much more. This exhibit and program series tells the stories of how Michigan talent and determination changed the world!

The Macomb Organization for Retiree Enrichment (MORE) is a lifelong learning program of the Cultural Affairs and Community Engagement Department of Macomb Community College. The program welcomes anyone with a passion for learning and personal development. The non-credit MORE classes cover a wide variety of subjects and topics and are presented by volunteer guest faculty.
