In a presentation some ideas you hear are based on facts (i.e. something known to be true): People use fire for cooking. We know that … Some are based on opinions (personal beliefs or ideas). The fire seems dangerous. It’s hard to imagine life without fire. That looks better. Pay attention to the words a speaker uses to introduce an idea. This will help you to decide which ideas are facts and which are the opinions of the speaker.

1.16 Listen to the presentation again. Decide if each sentence expresses a fact (F) or an opinion (O) based on the presentation. Compare with a partner. 1 Fire was first used between 300,000 and 400,000 years ago. 2 The use of fire dramatically changed people’s lives. 3 People were less afraid at night when they burned fires. 4 Cooking food allowed people to digest more nutrients and calories. 5 One benefit from cooking food was that it was easier to chew. 6 Cooking food allowed it to be preserved for longer. 7 When people had more food choices, they survived longer. 8 People’s lives were better when they could socialize at night. 9 Cooking food doesn’t seem like an application of technology.

2 Adapt each of the sentences above to make a true statement about something you know or to make a sentence that is true for you.

Developing critical thinking

Skillful Listening & Speaking Student’s Book 3

Academic success requires so much more than memorizing facts. It takes skills. This means that a successful student can both learn and think critically. Skillful helps teachers prepare their students for academic work in English by teaching not only language – vocabulary and grammar – but the necessary skills to engage with topics, texts, and discourse with classmates.
