Hancock Nursery education is expanding rapidly throughout Africa, but there are currently very few specifically written, quality materials for use in the classroom. Teachers spend considerable amounts of time and effort producing their own resources. This enormous need has been addressed through our series First Steps. First Steps is a two-year programme of pre-school materials designed specifically for young children in Africa. It provides exciting learning material for 30 weeks a year for two years, allowing 10 hours of teaching per week. The course offers an English language component which will fit any pre-school programme. The content, design and illustrations are multi-cultural and have pan-Africa settings. First Steps introduces children to the alphabet, colours, shapes and sizes, pre-reading, pre-writing and early numbers. The programme is very clear with a simple-to-use format. The skills are introduced through six child-centred themes per year, using a variety of carefully controlled and enjoyable activities.

THEMES YEAR 1: Colour: Red/Yellow/Blue/Green/Black/White/Brown Shape: Circle/Square/Triangle/Rectangle/Corners Size: Big and small/Fat and thin/Long and short/ Comparative/Superlatives Myself: Getting up/Face and hair/Looking after my body/Exercising/My clothes My Family: Who do I live with?/Other people in my family/Babies/Helping/Sharing My Home: My house/The rooms in my house/My favourite place/Things we use in the house/My garden YEAR 2: Animals: Animals at home/Animal families/At the market/Small wild animals/Baby animals My School: My teacher/Things in the classroom/ My best friend/The school buildings/Playtime Food: My favourite food/Healthy food/Growing food/Food from animals and plants/Feasts Weather and Sky: Wet and dry/Shadows and the sun/The wind/Day and night/The sky Water and Air: Uses for water/Saving water/ Floating and sinking/Bubbles/Who lives in the water? These are all linked to the themes.

READING SKILLS L. Fidge and M. Murby Learning to read effectively is a vital skill for everyone. HIV.AIDS Action Course

NEW

In most countries HIV and AIDS are taught across the subject areas and through extracurricular activities. This course takes a crosscurricular approach with the various topics, questions and activities relating to subject areas and syllabuses. Taught as a whole the material provides a complete course. Topics can be taught in any order and the material is organised in convenient double-page spreads to make it easy to select sections to suit your own syllabus or situation. Each topic begins with a short story or play to engage the readers, allow discussion of behaviour, motivation and values, and encourage the development of life skills and personal values. Many activities also take a life skills approach, for example, building self esteem and communication skills, and include community involvement. There are many opportunities for students to take an active part in the learning process, ask their own questions, develop their own thinking and reach a full understanding of the issues around HIV and AIDS. This course comprises two Student’s Books and their accompanying Teacher’s Guides. The first book, Learning about HIV and AIDS, is broadly suitable for upper primary, and the second book Understanding HIV and AIDS, for lower secondary, but schools may decide to use either book or both books at either level. HISTORY

REVISED EDITION

F. K. Buah

History of Africa

A text covering the country’s history from the very early days up to 1996. It is suitable for students studying the revised SS history syllabus as well as for readers with a general interest in the country.

NEW EDITION

K. Shillington The newly revised edition of this popular classic offers an illustrated and critical narrative of the history of the continent from earliest times to the present day. Building on the book’s established reputation, in this new edition the author draws on the most recent and up-to-date research to convey something of the wealth and depth of Africa’s long and fascinating past.

9780333659342

New History of Sierra Leone J. A. D. Alie

Beginning with the evolution of humankind itself, History of Africa, traces the history of the continent through the ancient world to medieval and modern Africa. It explores the early emergence of farming when the Sahara was still a region of open savannah pastures and flowing rivers; the kingdoms of Ancient Egypt, Aksum and Meroe; the medieval Sudanic empires of Ghana, Mali and Songhay; the spread and impact of Islam; the role of trade and traditional religion in the growth of kingship; and the development of Africa’s wide range of pastoral, agricultural and hunting societies. History of Africa takes a deliberately African viewpoint of the European involvement in Africa, illustrating, for example, the seldom-acknowledged contribution of Africans to the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade. A carefully constructed critique of the colonial period is followed by an examination of the problems of post-colonial Africa in their proper historical perspective, which presents a positive view of contemporary Africa. This edition includes a new final chapter tracing the history of the continent into the new millennium.

An absorbing account of the history of the country from pre-colonial times to 1990, with significant focus on the people of Sierra Leone, both in terms of individuals and the communities who have shaped the country’s history. 9780333519844
