What's inside? Each book is divided into units, each focusing in on one of the five strands of syllabus. These units are then divided into sub-units which cover the curriculum Focus Questions. Each unit opens with an assessment activity – “What do I already know” reminding students which allows students to practice skills and helps teachers identify where knowledge is lacking. Each unit then offers easy to follow lessons, as this example page shows:
Let’s Learn Unit 1.18 Engage
Explore
Write down as many numbers as you can, in 1 minute, that have 3 and 5 as common factors. Explain to a friend how you worked this out. We can use Venn diagrams to find common factors and the highest common factor. For example: The highest common factor of 36 and 40 = 4 Draw Venn diagrams to show the factors and the common factors of the following pairs of numbers. Circle the highest common factor.

Explain
How can you tell that two numbers will have 2 as a common factor? What about 3?
Extend
Draw a three-way Venn diagram to show the common factors of 24, 36 and 60.
Evaluate
Each page is designed to be taught as a single lesson based around the 5Es: Engage, Explore, Explain, Extend, Evaluate. This approach supports the investigation of new concepts through activities and discussion topic
b 36 and 60
References to the workbook are given throughout the book enabling students to practice skills further
At the end of every unit there is: •
A Cross-Curricular enquiry project, which shows mathematics in real world contexts
•
An assessment task, allowing teachers to assess student understanding of the unit, and providing an opportunity for identifying areas of remedial work
c 45 and 60
Make a video or podcast of how to identify common factors of two given numbers.
22
Every lesson starts with the learning objective for that day
What is the highest common factor of the following pairs of numbers?
a 16 and 24
The tablet/mobile icon indicates activities that fulfill the curriculum ICT objectives
In this lesson, you will learn how to identify common factors of two given numbers. WB p8
