As the 2024 College year draws to a close, I appreciate that our College magazine, the Basilikos, provides a wealth of memories. The word basilikos means ‘royal – belonging to the King’ and was chosen as the title of the first Mackay Christian College yearbook in 1985. You can view all the annual yearbooks since then on the College website at https://mcc.qld.edu.au/ our-legacy/
These five values underpin all that the College aims to achieve and are included in the Strategic Plan, our teacher pedagogy, our training of student behaviours through discipling models and our approach to a values filter when using digital technology.
They contain class photos, stories and memories from the past forty years, summarising the College’s growth and history. Many things have changed, including new buildings and classrooms, a new uniform in 1998, an Agriculture Centre in 2001, the Trade Training Centre in 2010, a new primary and early learning centre campus at Providence in 2011, three Principals, many hundreds of teachers and support staff and many thousands of students.
One thing that has not changed however, is the reason for establishing this College in the first place.
In 1983, Ps Rob Booth-Jones and his team of Mackay Christian Family leaders responded to God’s call to build a Christian College as a service and outreach arm for the Mackay community.
Starting with 17 students in 1984, the College has grown to become a lighthouse for the Lord Jesus Christ and a school that teaches Christian values. Embedded in our CLEAR values are Christlikeness, Learning, Attitude, Excellence and Respect.
Our prayer is that students will experience both the support and challenge offered by Christian education. As they seek to learn more about themselves and their place in this world, our teachers provide education within a Christian World View. This may differ from a student’s usual world experiences but hopefully might also teach young ones to reflect upon others’ opinions and information.
Education and learning affect the mind, the heart, the soul and the spirit. In 2024, I pray you have had opportunities to stretch your thinking and to grow your soul, especially as you serve and care for yourself and others.
Dr Lesley Tunnah
May your future be woven into God’s plans and be blessed.

In 1983, Ps Rob Booth-Jones, Ps Denise Booth-Jones and their church, Mackay Christian Family, had a vision for establishing a mission outreach arm to the Mackay community by starting a school, Mackay Christian College.
Forty-one years later, hundreds of teachers and support staff, and thousands of students have experienced this Christian-based educational provider.
On Friday, 8th November, we officially opened the RBJ Meeting Room, a dedicated space for meetings and welcoming educational partners to the school.
It has been a tradition of the College to name College buildings after influential missionaries who have had an impact in Queensland.
These include Thomas L Evans (TLE block), Florence Young (FY block), Annie Dennis (AD block) and Lloyd Averill (NLA block).
Ps Rob has long resisted having buildings named after him and so we have chosen to acknowledge his many years of service and oversight as Board Chair by naming this meeting room after him.
May there be many Godhonouring, productive discussions held in this space as we continue to develop the educational services of Mackay Christian College.
YEAR 10, 11 & 12
As I finish my time at MCC, I reflect on what I have done over these past few years and what I have achieved. Last year I was given the position of College Captain and have had the greatest experience of being able to help lead this school and its students. It has been an incredible time here at MCC and I will always remember the fun times I have had here. I would like to thank my fellow College and House Captains, as well as the Care Ambassadors for making our final year of high school unforgettable and exciting.
I would also like to thank the many teachers that had to deal with us constantly coming in late, handing in assignments late, and our general shenanigans.
There have been a lot of difficulties this year due to a multitude of factors and challenges that we have had to face; but most of us would not have made it without the constant support and encouragement of the staff here at MCC. As a young man I tended to daydream a lot, always thinking about the future like, what job I would have, what the world would like. I thought I would be a scientist when
I grew up, but Science class was always about plants, and I quickly grew sick of it. I thought I would be an astronaut, I then learned quickly about the dangers of space and the requirements. So that left me with nothing, I had no idea what my future would hold.
This school h owever has changed me for the better, it has made me come to the conclusions of my daydreams as a kid. Through the encouragement of my English and Literature teachers, I have found a passion for writing and hopefully one day write a best seller. I pray for all of you still here that you find your future just like I have through the continual and constant support of both your teachers and peers, and help create a relationship with God during your time here.
Goodbye, Good luck, and God Bless.
Abigail Manning College Captain
Since starting at MCC in Prep 2012, I have come to view Mackay Christian College as a family and it has been such a blessing to be a part of this College and, even more so, to serve as College Captain in my final year.
I have enjoyed serving and working alongside the College community and the wonderful people apart of it.
In my role as College Captain, I dedicated myself to upholding and maintaining the projects that were the legacy of last year’s captains. They began the tradition of end-of-term chapels, a celebration of the term just passed and an opportunity to honour outstanding students. We as a leadership team, decided to continue the tradition, organising a celebration chapel at the end of each term with an additional award. We created the College Captain Recognition Award so that we could honour a student who had been a blessing to us.
The chapels highlighted MCC's unique culture and showed our thankfulness for the students who had a servant heart, and I hope that this is a tradition that is carried on for many years to come.
Another legacy of the previous College Captains was the Student Leader program, and I knew from the beginning that this was also something I wanted to uphold. Working with the appointed student leaders was one of my favourite parts of the job this year. These role model, selfless, servant-hearted students, willingly committed themselves to do the dreaded mundane tasks such as raising and lowering the flags each day, sorting through gross drink bottles in order to raise funds for student council, and standing in for absent Captains during assembly. These kind acts made all the difference, and I am so grateful for their service and sacrifice.
As the year comes to an end, I am filled with gratitude for the journey we’ve shared and the incredible people who have touched my life along the way. I pray God's blessings over the college and all the people apart of it, present and future, and pray that He continue to guide MCC in helping us to become all that He made us to be.
Whilst I am excited to finish this chapter and to begin another, I will not forget my MCC family and their love and kindness.
Uzziah Gilbank Vice Captain
Well, I'm here now, the end of school. I never thought it would come this quickly. From the first day in Prep-C with Miss Aston and Mrs. Tucci with my first mate, Jared Mackie, all the way back in 2012, and now it feels like just the other year I was in Grade 5 going into Grade 6, my first year at ’The Big School.’ But now I would like to talk about my time here as a student leader, Vice-Captain, and student of Mackay Christian College.
My goal from the day I stepped onto this campus after finishing some of the most memorable years of my schooling career on Providence Campus, was to become a Captain of some description like my dad and his brothers were back in the 90’s and early 2000’s. But my ultimate goal was to become a College Captain like my uncle and to carry on the Gilbank legacy at Mackay Christian College.
Receiving the role of Vice-Captain was a surprise and a real achievement for myself. The suspense of sitting in your seat waiting the entire celebration night for the College Captains to be announced is like no other that I've felt. It's a feeling I will never forget. The journey of being College Vice-Captain has been challenging but one I’ve found very rewarding.
In the role of V.C. I looked forward to being able to make a difference in the school culture and student body and make God the center of why we attend this amazing school. Being able to serve alongside a great team of College Captains was a massive help as we, a group of determined, goal-getting individuals, were able to execute our vision for the College to the best of our ability.
There were a lot of unexpected changes as we started the year, with the early departure of our college principal Mr Bevan Little who I look up too as a leader and a role model of a servant heart; the struggles of Year 12 life and trying to figure out what I was going to do next year, let alone the rest of my life. I knew I couldn’t let that stop me from doing my job as Vice-Captain and I had to live in the now and let the future sort itself out. I know God has a plan and purpose for my life and I just have to trust Him which meant I had to move on and get stuff done.
A highlight for myself was having the privilege to march and lay the wreath on ANZAC Day with my fellow captains at Jubilee Park. This was special for me as my great grandfather and his brothers were all involved in past conflicts over the decades. All but one of his brothers survived and that one died a hero for our nation we call home.
Another highlight was being given the chance to travel with the TTC boys down to Lakeside Raceway and competing in the six-hour endurance race with Formula Student Program against a number of schools from Brisbane, where I beat fellow teammate, Cruise Mason, for the fastest legal lap time of 1:52.1691 (we couldn’t go faster then 1:52.000). “It doesn't matter what's under the hood, the only thing that matters is who's behind the wheel.” - Dominic Toretto.
As I finish my time at MCC I can say the past 13 years have been a season in life that I will never forget. The life skills and guidance from leaders within the school, whether they have a badge or not, all the different circumstances are second to none; the friends I have made are ones that will last a lifetime. The connections and friendships formed with countless teachers over the years will always have a place in my heart, the lunchtime basketball games, the conversations, the laughs, the carnivals, and the Open Days live on in my memory.
I pray God's blessing over this school in the many years to come that it will thrive and continue to be a blessing to everyone who steps foot on its grounds. But with all that said, thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey, I appreciate everything you have all done.
This is your 2x Student Leader, 1x College Vice-Captain, 3x Age Champion, 2x Staff vs Students' series winner, 2024 College Vice Captain, Uzziah ‘UZI’ Gilbank signing out.
But before you go here is a bible verse I reflect on as ViceCaptain
Ephesians 6:6-8
"Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free."
Keeley Koina Vice Captain
It has been a pleasure to serve as a Vice Captain at a school like Mackay Christian College. I was enrolled at MCC back in 2019 to start Grade 7 and from that moment, I have experienced and built connections like no other. The bonds formed here with students to the teachers to the staff are truly special. MCC has a way of bringing the whole school community together. In the six years which I have attended Mackay Christian College I have built lasting relationships and had unforgettable experiences, all that which have shaped me into the person I am today.
Grade 12 has undoubtedly been the most challenging year of my life for a number of reasons. H owev er, the teachers here at MCC go beyond just teaching. They truly care about the wellbeing of all of their students in and out of class time. Their genuine concern and unwavering support has had a profound impact on the majority if not all students who attend the College.
I have always wanted to be a school leader as I have always had the passion to serve, problem solve, lead, manage and organise, which are vital qualities in being a school leader. I was blessed to have had the opportunity to be selected to serve the school as a College Vice Captain in 2024.
The captains and I this year aimed to keep the same traditions alive as the others did before us. We continued activities such as student council, the student leaders program, the end of term assemblies to celebrate the students of MCC, cans for cash, Grade 12 led chapels and more.
The role of captain has certainly been a difficult, but it is one that I will be forever grateful for. I have learnt so many valuable lessons, such as what it takes to be a leader and the list of responsibilities that come along with it, how to communicate with people and how to get tasks done. The role of a College Captain is challenging but it is most definitely a rewarding one.
I would like to acknowledge both Principals who served the College in 2024, Mr Little and Dr Tunnah and also the Head of Secondary, Mrs Wright. From them I have learnt valuable leadership and life skills which I will cherish and use in my day to day life. I would also like to thank the one and only Mrs Bounden for all the work she has put into supporting the Grade 12's this year. Lastly I would like to thank my fellow College Captains Gabriel Barnett-Eyles, Abigail Manning and Uzziah Gilbank for all the work they have put into their roles this year.
Whilst I am excited to leave school and start the next chapter of my life, the past 6 years at MCC have truly been a blessing. From the connections, to the friendships I have made, from the challenges to the triumphs, the memories MCC has given me will be cherished forever. When I say that we have been blessed to attend a school like MCC, I genuinely mean it.
Wow, what an amazing year it was for Averill. Averill you have continuously shown everyone how supportive, strong and resilient you are throughout the year including all the challenges.
Being your 2024 Averill House Captain has been such a blessing and privilege; there have been multiple challenges and a lot of work, but with you guys by our sides, it made it so much more enjoyable and entertaining. We couldn’t be prouder of the students in Averill for their continuous participation, commitment, and enthusiasm in the carnivals, House Family time, and other activities involving the House Family. To our House Family, it has been a pleasure to serve you as House Captains this year; we loved getting to know you, laughing with you and overall, the connection we were able to create through the year; you guys will be missed dearly by us.
To Mrs Mills, you are our House Family mum. You always looked out for us, helped us, and made sure we were doing the right thing. We will be forever grateful for you and hope we made you and the House Family proud.
Lastly, for future House Captains, enjoy it while you can because it goes by faster than you'd think.
Good luck to all future house captains. Remember to stay mighty in spirit.
Gouws. We are very thankful for Mrs Gouws' undying commitment to us and Dennis, from being by our side through everything to painting her nails and dyeing her hair red and black. Without your support, guidance, and passion, we could not have become the House we are. We love you.
This year saw Dennis develop into a passionate force that became unstoppable when we wanted it. It took a few weeks, but after we stormed Evans with our deafening drum and fear-inducing war cry, Dennis became one. We all wanted the same thing: to win—no, dominate.
After everyone realised the potential of our extraordinary House, any goal we set as a House was met (except winning the Athletics Carnival – well done, Averill). From winning carnivals to coming to litter duty to being the loudest House. We do it all. As House Captains, it became our goal to see everyone in Dennis succeed at whatever they are good at and thrive in their talents. It was our goal to encourage everyone to try their best and give their all. We believe we accomplished that.
Thank You, Dennis, for being such a great family to us. We are proud of all of you and wish you the best as we leave. Keep trying your best and keep working hard. Good luck to next year’s captains, and we trust you to continue the Dennis legacy.
This year has been wild, with so many highs and lows. But guess what? We are here, having not only survived 2024 but thrived in it.
experienced. We’ve seen a shift in the culture of our House Family as many have shown a better attitude towards everything, even litter duty. Even though we may have remained in third place this year, we continuously gave Dennis and Averill a run for their money. At one stage, we were even winning, all while having the smallest House Family.
As a team of House Captains, we passionately aspired to lead and lead well. As we went throughout the year, we had to learn a few important lessons, especially around the Three Ts—teamwork, Tenacity, and Temptation. At times, it was hard, but it was so worth it.
We’d like to thank the younger students who have stepped up to help us out, to set examples in their eagerness to be involved and their words of encouragement. We’d also like to thank our fellow Year 12s who often stepped up to help us out. Finally, we’d like to thank Mrs Butler for always bringing up ideas and supporting us through this whole year – and providing the best lollies.
As we step down from our House Captain role, we want to express our deepest gratitude for the incredible support and teamwork we have shared. It’s been an honour to lead such a spirited group.
Together, we have achieved amazing things and created lasting memories. While our time being your House Captains is ending, I have no doubt that our House will continue to thrive and excel.
Thank you for the unforgettable journey, and let’s keep the spirit alive.

Secondary Care Ambassadors 2024.
This year, the Care Ambassadors, with Mrs Fay's amazing support, had the wonderful opportunity to support fundraisers and causes close to our hearts. We continued with the tradition of R U OK? Day, where we fostered important conversations and encouraged our peers to support one another through positive notes and the donation of cupcakes.
We chose to aid our community by running a donation drive that helped the Mackay Domestic Violence Shelter and the Kalyan Youth Homeless Shelter. Knowing our efforts could make a difference in the lives of others has been incredibly rewarding.
A standout initiative was our Breast Cancer Free Dress Day, where we raised an impressive $2,500, thanks to the generous support of local businesses and the enthusiastic participation of our student body. This event not only generated vital funds but also heightened awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection, fostering a sense of solidarity within our community.
We also celebrated Harmony Day, which allowed us to highlight the rich diversity within our school. Through cultural presentations and activities, we promoted understanding, respect, and unity among students from all backgrounds, creating an inclusive environment where everyone felt valued.
We are immensely grateful for the opportunities we have had to support our school and community this year. Together, we have made a meaningful difference, thank you to everyone who joined us on this journey!
Primary Care Ambassadors 2024.
Our team consists of: Alexia Chapman, Torin Darr, Isla Hardman, Mireya Horwell, Sharity Noble and Leah Oosthuisen.
This team have had a very busy year, proving to truly deserve their badges. The team have worked together brilliantly to lead out in events including Sweethearts Day, Harmony Day, RU OK? Day, Crazy Hair Day and collecting items for the donation drive – each of these events providing awareness and valuable assistance to worthwhile charities.
The Care Ambassadors also ran games at Orange village each Friday, ran a sausage sizzle at our Athletics Carnivals, served at the staff breakfast, assisted younger student’s with their Father’s Day shopping.
Currently the Care Ambassadors have recruited the support of Landcare and are working on a new garden at the entrance of Green Village which will create a beautiful space for the buddy bench.
