Welcome to the 2023 Basilikos for Mackay Christian College. This year we celebrated forty years since the vision of Chairman of Mackay Christian College Board and Senior Pastor of Mackay Christian Family, Rob Booth-Jones, heeded the direction of God to establish a Christian school in Mackay. Mackay Christian College has certainly grown f rom being setup week by week in a church hall to a multi campus college. Whilst I am greatly inspired by the stories of God’s provision of the College buildings and facilities, the long-lasting impact of our organisation has always consisted of students, parents and staff working together to develop the God given potential of each learner. Our College is a community of faith where we work in partnership with parents to develop and educate students to discover and fulf il their personal Christian destiny. We are a Christian community where teachers and support staff foster a love for learning, nurture character, share their faith in Christ with students, encourage and pray for students daily and prepare them to face the challenges of the future with conf idence and integrity.

As you will see throughout the 2023 Basilikos, Mackay Christian College seeks to provide a quality learning environment where students are afforded the opportunity to engage and achieve success in Academics, Character, Cultural, Creative Academy, Leadership and in Sports. Programmes such as the F1 in Schools, Cattle Show Team, Bridge Builders, Chess Club, Rugby 7s and Creative Academy are available for students and staff to love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind and with all our strength, and to love our neighbours as ourselves (Mark 12:30-31). That verse has been developed into our CLEAR Values acronym – Christlikeness (soul), Learning (mind), Excellence (strength), Attitude (heart) and Respect (love for your neighbours) – and is woven into the fabric of all learning activities and educational delivery. As we look forward to the new adventure that awaits us in 2024, let this Basilikos be a source of reference of just how far Mackay Christian College has advanced over the past forty years of providing values-based Christian education. May we be guided by God’s plan to continue to fulf il all that He has for our College in the years to come.

With the conclusion of my time as male College Captain for 2023 I would like to reflect on my time in this position. It has been a turbulent year to say the least. The 40th year celebrations, Faith Centre renovations, Mr Hopper's farewells and the departure of Dr Gallogray, it can be said that this year has been difficult to navigate. I would like to thank my fellow College Connor Gould Captains, Kasey Attard, Jonathan College Captain Graham and Aquila Fisher. We as a team have worked together to achieve so much and you three have made the experience much more enjoyable despite such a hectic year. I would also like to thank Mr Hopper and Mrs Bounden which as a team we have worked with closely. Mr Hopper's kind nature and strong values have been an excellent blueprint of a leader for myself to follow and his calm supportive demeanour has been the foundation from which we as a team could then work upon. Mrs Bounden’s bright funny nature has been a pleasure to experience this year. You being a NSW Blues supporter made for some good jokes for me to make during the Origin series as well.

Thankyou to Dr Gallogray also. Your knowledge of leadership has been so critical to my style of leadership. You also gave me this amazing opportunity to serve the College. Finally thankyou to the student body. It has been a pleasure to lead you through this year. Your respectful behaviour despite the chaotic nature of this year has been much appreciated. My time as Captain while challenging has been so rewarding. The knowledge and experience that I have received, I will carry with me for life and the opportunity to serve this college community has been a blessing. That is what makes MCC such a special school, the community. When I was in Year 8, I tried to move to Mercy College. I attended the Info Night and had a meeting with the Principal. I would end up not moving to Mercy College. When I returned to MCC I discovered what makes this school so special. It is the community that makes MCC a unique school to attend. Large enough to provide pathways for students to choose any career they want, but small enough for every part of the college staff and students to create a personal connection. It is this dynamic that will always endure with MCC. The community makes every MCC student feel included in the College and truly makes MCC a place where everyone belongs.

I really enjoyed my time here at MCC. I remember as the new year rolled in that we met in a park to discuss what we wanted to achieve this year for the student body. One of the things our grade was really set on, was bringing back the Student Leader programme. So that's what we set out to do. Kasey Attard Rewriting this programme, we College Captain hoped that it would help bridge the gap between the grades and bring connection. There is something so special about watching an idea come to life and all the hard work pay off. Running elections and having the opportunity to talk with many students about, how they wanted to help people and this school through leadership, was one of my highlights throughout this year.

There are so many opportunities presented in captaincy and things that happen behind the scenes. But the best of which is the close leadership team you develop. Meetings, excursions and squeezing into Ms Wright’s little Mazda 3 with my fellow captains to get to Senior Camp for a leadership forum, was more fun than work even though there was a lot of work involved. Thank you, my amazing follow captains; Connor Gould, Aquila Fisher, and Jonathan Graham. Thank you for all your support and laughs over the year. Thankyou Mr Hopper for your dedication and mentorship to this team. We are the leaders we are today thanks to you. MCC is such a special place that I will miss greatly. There is a beautiful and unique culture of family in this school that is made by our caring teaches, staff and the students.

Starting at MCC in Prep 2010, I have had the privilege of seeing our God working in the school over the years. Knowing this, I would like to acknowledge the teachers and staff for leading students to Christ in the way they act and teach. It has been because of God’s persistent guidance through them, that many students including me, have seen his purpose in our lives. Jonathan Graham Vice Captain We know that it is God’s work here at the College because his Holy Spirit works here. And it is the fruits of His spirit through the Staff, teachers, students, and parents of this community that is absolute proof of God’s presence here. Even though we can be blind to God’s work in the day to day of busy life, as a Christian, it has been hard to ignore his hand in the College. Although there are many areas in the College that are evidence of this, I only have time to mention one. For me, it would have to be Student Council. Being an opportunity for Captains, Student Leaders, and students to serve something other than themselves, it has been an environment where Students and Captains get to see how hard it is at times to get an idea applied to action. Just like our motto in Student Council, I have found that leadership ultimately falls under two words: service, and guidance. Although I have found it to be hard at times, Leaders must place their own interests, ambitions, and pride aside. For there is no place for such things when leading those that you have been entrusted with. When I say it has been a blessing, it has truly been a blessing to see the God’s bigger picture as Vice-Captain at MCC. The word blessing means to see favour by God by following his will. And we are blessed here at MCC because his will is active here. And so, with all this, I shall finish on the very words that still direct our purpose at this school. May thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

What a crazy year it has been! As College Vice Captain at Mackay Christian College 2023, I greatly appreciated my opportunity to serve my school community, in and out of my leadership position at MCC,

I have been privileged to work alongside many wonderful people in many challenging and exciting journeys.

One of my journeys this year was beginning a tradition of an end of term celebration assembly. This aimed to highlight MCC’s unique culture, show our thankfulness for the blessings in our lives, and acknowledge our students for serving the community. And oh, how it did. From videos, to games, to performances, to chair stacks, I watched as the talents of my school came together to achieve an atmosphere of love and fun. Being able to facilitate this process revealed to me the extent of diverse skills and passion that our school holds.

As I look around my school - in bands, on stage, in classes - I am overwhelmed with the talents hiding amongst our school. The unique skills and drive of every individual in our College, and the collaboration of them together in such a positive space is what I believe has made our school MCC. Through my 7 years at the College, I have been blessed with the opportunity to learn from, argue with, and grow alongside one of the most diverse group of people I have ever met. And I am now grateful to bring this hectic journey to an end with a smile. Whilst I am excited to finish high school and begin the next chapter of my journey, I hope to hold onto the friendships I have formed, the laughs I have had and the memories I have made. I urge every youth of Mackay Christian College to embrace their talents and strive to make a positive impact in our world. It has been an amazing year filled with accomplishments for Averill. Winning the Swimming, Cross Country, and Athletic carnivals was great, but Averill's other successes were even more meaningful. The family group has grown into a close-knit and supportive community, which has been an incredible journey. As House Family Captains, there were challenges, but with the help of our coaches, Mr Little and Mrs Mills, we overcame them and came out stronger in the end. We are grateful to Mrs. Adele Gouws, our Dennis House Family coach, for her unwavering support and encouragement, as well as to our House Family and Chapel teachers for their consistent guidance and assistance. Their hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed. As we reflect on the year, we recognise the challenges we faced and the successes we achieved. Although we did not win all of the sports events, we are proud to have won the overall House title for 2023, a victory that would not have been possible without the efforts and contributions of every student in Dennis. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone in Dennis for their tireless efforts and dedication, which made this an extraordinary year to remember. Wow, it’s finally over. It seems like only one minute ago we were waiting anxiously to get announced as the next Evans House Family Captains for 2023 and now, here we are, actually finishing our role. This year has been crazy with so many ups and downs. No, we didn’t beat Dennis or Averill but we got very close to it at the end of the year. Nobody said it would be easy and it wasn’t, but we made it through with flying colours. The Evans House Family motto is “to soar and to serve” and we ensure we always do. As we bid farewell, we celebrate a year of extraordinary growth in leadership, resilience, and dedication. Through our vision, determination, and passion, we have led our House Family through numerous challenges and, more importantly, hope we have left an indelible mark on our school's spirit. We thank all in Evans for their tireless efforts to encourage excellence, and create lasting memories that have truly made this year one to remember. We extend our heartfelt gratitude for the exceptional year we have had and look forward to the bright futures the next Captains are destined to create. We truly believe we have done our best to make Evans a more inviting team. In 2023, we had a lot of fun in our House Family. We spent time together and got to know our Young House Family members. We had weekly events such as sporting carnivals and inter-house competitions. We want to give a huge shout-out to the Young House Family athletes who broke records, made it to District and Statelevel competitions, and were age champions in their field. You guys are amazing! We also want to acknowledge our chess champions for their incredible performance. We are grateful for the continued support of the Young House Family and their positive contributions to our House Family spirit. Teamwork really does make the dream work!
