M+A Practice Profile Macfarlane + Associates is a land planning and design consultancy.

The practice was established in 2003 to meet the demand for a more flexible and focused approach to urban and environmental regeneration in the UK and overseas.

Oakgrove Caterham, Oakland Quality residential development scheme on a former hospital site in Caterham. M+A were appointed to create the public realm and landscape masterplan, detailed design and construction package.

The organic, simple design of the residential gardens, public open space and Green Belt suits the context of the site and natural setting.

The site has many valuable existing retained trees which create link to the natural environment through the Green Belt, and provide an oasis for future residents.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Chiswick Gate, Burlington Lane, Chiswick M+A have been commissioned by Berkeley Homes to deliver a residential scheme who’s unique selling point is the landscaped gardens which are designed to provide a sanctuary and invitation to explore for residents.

The site is located within the Borough of Hounslow and the Chiswick House Conservation Area. It is also situated adjacent to Chiswick House which is recognised for its architectural and historic interest and landscaped grounds. In 1866 the site was believed to be a cherry orchard, which inspired the naming of the Cherry Blossom Shoe Polish Company that occupied the site in the 20th Century.

The proposed residential scheme is designed to sit within walled gardens which provide a sanctuary for the senses and continue the beautiful journey from Chiswick House.

The landscape within the walled gardens is separated into a formal central courtyard with water features and a new cherry orchard set on undulating lawns.

DESIGN PROPOSALS

Three Score Norwich Taylor Wimpey Major Projects selected their team led by Sir Richard MacCormac’s MJP for this ambitious bid for 1000 residential units and associated community facilities with Norwich City Council.

The ÂŁ20m 10 year masterplan for this 30 hectare residential development aims to retain and improve the existing woodland within the site to provide informal play and recreation.

Two design concepts were developed. The first proposes small scattered green nodes throughout the development to compliment the existing woodland. The village green would form the main formal green node which would provide areas for play and community facilities. New green corridors would run from the north to south of the site to provide capacity for a sustainable urban drainage strategy and to maximise biodiversity and ecology.

The driving force behind the second concept is the creation of green spines which would run through the development to provide a greater cohesion of green nodes. These spines would provide a number of valuable opportunities, including a greater number of houses to front onto a green environment, areas for open parkland which would be incorporated in a SUDs strategy and enhanced views to the River Yare Valley.

Leybourne Grange Crest Nicholson put together a select and experienced team to bid for this English Partnership Hospitals programme. The masterplanning team, led by Sheppard Robson architects and Macfarlane Associates on public realm, landscape and sustainable drainage worked up a compliant and non compliant masterplan in a bid to win the right to develop the site.

Leybourne Grange provides the setting for a residential community of over 700 houses. The site is dominated by the extensive parkland setting of the former hospital and is surrounded by open farmland.

The landscape masterplan conserves and enhances the most important landscape features, including woodland areas, an arboretum and walled gardens. The West Village with a central green provides the community heart of the development.

An innovative sustainable drainage scheme is designed to minimise run off and maximise biodiversity opportunity with new swales and wetland areas.

The combination of these elements would create the setting for sophisticated residential architecture delivering the vision of a thoroughly modern community within a sustainable development.

Severalls Hospital The approach to this submission has been informed by what is perceived to be the main priorities of English Partnerships and the North Essex Mental Health Partnership Trust and our desire to create a quality residential living environment both vibrant and sustainable.

The master plan fully recognises the importance of the former hospital site as key green area of environmental and community importance.

This is a large scale residential opportunity that will provide Colchester with a visionary, sustainable community that builds upon the rich landscape and will provide a lasting legacy. The Severalls Estate will establish itself as an exciting, modern and vibrant place that is unique from the surrounding area.

The teams approach has been to evolve the original Master Plan to embody best practice and the Development Brief Design Standards for the site. This will deliver a unique and innovative development of the highest design quality and provide a benchmark against which future projects in Colchester and the region will be measured.

Goscote Lane WALSALL The Goscote Lane Corridor Regeneration Area Design Guide was developed as a guidance tool for design teams developing each of the eight sites in the area. It sets the standard for design and should be seen as the starting point for dialogue between developer and design teams. The Design Guide ensures a cohesive approach to the different sites across the regeneration area and ensures a level of certainty to the quality of the urban spaces.

This Design Guide introduces a masterplan framework proposal which is defined by a vision for the areas’ regeneration. In essence, the focus of the regeneration proposals have been to identify the canal as a focal point in the Goscote community and the need to introduce new routes to improve connectivity.

Guidelines identify the quality of the streets and their importances as spaces in the community and offer detailed guidance in the design of streets and open spaces thoughout the regeneration area.

S3 Plot NW Cambridge M+A were commisssioned to develop the landscape strategy in the bid for the prestigious new developments within the growing development of the North West Cambridge masterplan.

Working with Formation architects M+A developed the concept which takes its cue from the quads and connective passageways of Cambridge’s University buildings. Each entry into the next ‘quad’ was to have an element of surprise and delight.

The character of each courtyard was designed to give a different experience to the residents. All courtyards would be accessible to all residents and as such offer a diverse and interesting outdoor space, including a sloping lawn, reflective pool, ‘sharing’ table and lush planting.

Each has been designed to be acessible and offer safe playable spaces for young families as well as providing connectivity to the landscape beyond.

Norwich City Football Club, Masterplan Landscape planning consultancy for the Norwich City Football Club to deliver a masterplan that approved high density residential development on the riverside carpark areas owned by the club. The successful planning permission has allowed the football club to use the finance raised from the sale of this land to build a new south stand. This ensured the club would meet its aspirations for progression in the football leagues and create financial viability.

The design extends to a new riverside walkway and setting for the historic Boom Tower, a scheduled ancient monument and symbolic gateway to the city.

The alignment of the Old Carrow Road has influenced the design with a significant public realm connection from the river into the stadium milling areas encouraging visitors and fans to use the river corridor.

Spencers Wood, Basingstoke Road

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

M+A is continuing its successful work with Crest Nicholson with the new residential development at Spencer’s wood in Wokingham.

The 100 new homes scheme features a central village green and LAP within a setting that makes use of the open space and connectivity to the countryside.

The site is divided into a number of different planting character zones which incorporates a management strategy to preserve and enhance the existing hedgerows boundaries for ecological benefit. Mature oaks have been artefully retained within the site to maintain the rural character.

The scheme also incorporates two attenuation ponds into the open space amenity as part of the site wide SuDS startegy.

Stansted Road, Elsenham M+A were commisioned by Crest Nicholson to provide detailed design for the approved outline residential scheme at Stansted Road, Elsenham.

The Scheme is a residential urban fringe development on a green field site, which involved coordinated Landscape and Ecology consultancy from M+A and Greengage.

The design incorporates a trim trail, allotments, SUDS, streetscape, Local area of play, receptor sites for ecological mitigation and retention of existing hedgerows and trees.

Utilising the natural gradient of the site meant interesting open spaces could be created and vistas through the landscape could be provided for residents.

M3 Plot NW Cambridge M+A were commisssioned to develop the landscape strategy in the bid for the prestigious new developments within the growing development of the North West Cambridge masterplan.

Working with Squires architects M+A developed a concept which is reflective of

the layout of ecclesiastical buildings and internal courtyards which offer a place for reflection and contemplation.

Planting and water have been used as a connective theme to introduce a play of light and shade as well as sound through structural planting and quality surface textures.

These elements echo the colonnade and compliment the elegant simplicity of the architecture.

As such, the internal spaces form a connective set spaces that offer a sensory internal place away from the busy street.

The upper floors are arranged with ‘private’ first floor suspended gardens and roof gardens that give views out unto both the street scape and open space of the cricket field.

Richmond Riverside Located on the site of an existing ice rink in Richmond, Surrey, this excellent example of our large scale riverside residential, was completed in three phases and is now maintained by the residents management company.

The riverside setting provided significant planning constraints but we managed to overcome these with a handsome scheme that was welcome by the local council. The project created an identity for each residents courtyards and gardens to each phase giving an intimacy to a large site.

The river setting included the refurbishment of the heritage Thames riverside gardens.

One Victoria Road, Acton The architectural vision for One Victoria Road is to deliver a series of new high quality buildings, that will respond more positively to the surrounding context than the existing buildings on site and will provide the following benefits: The scheme is designed to activate two of the main entrance points into the Southern Gateway, both from the southern entrance from the Western Avenue and the northern access from Chase Road; The proposed hierarchy of building forms is designed to provide more intimate open spaces of different characters that will be framed by active frontages of appropriate adjacent building uses to enliven the existing public realm and enable the development to integrate into the existing context; The location of the proposed new public open spaces will improve connectivity with both the proposed new Station Square and Central Urban Square; and will provide an appropriate balance between university residential accommodation, new work space, retail, community and leisure.

Dorchester Hotel & Spa Coworth Park Macfarlane + Associates were commissioned by the client to undertake a full planning application at Coworth Park for a new 5* Hotel and surrounding grounds within the existing manor house on the site, set in 35 acres of parkland. There are remnants of existing landscape features dotted around the gardens which Macfarlane + Associates restored to recreate the formal gardens of the existing building.

This sensitive development identifies the best heritage elements from the site and restores the neglected historic gardens to their former glory. Areas of improvement were made to the arrival forecourt to the front of the house, the parterres and sunken garden with avenues and vista lines re-established.

Following the approval of planning Macfarlane + Associates undertook the full construction drawings for the scheme and works were completed in 2010.

Dorchester Hotel & Spa, Coworth Park The Dorchester Collection commissioned Macfarlane + Associates to prepare an estate masterplan for Coworth Park, a large country estate near Sunningdale, to convert an historic mansion house into a 5 star country house hotel.

This new hotel for the Dorchester Group was planned to be open for guests by 2010. The Estate comprises over 200 acres, with a manor house set within 35 acres of gardens and woodlands.

With investment from the Dorchester Group a luxurious setting was created for the new use of Coworth Park House as a country house hotel which also offers hotel and leisure activities within a wider park setting.

Along with the 5* Hotel Macfarlane Associates have been commissioned to look at the whole site.

The client will offer guests the complete country experience and employed Macfarlane Associates to look at other ways the site could be used alongside Polo.

St John’s Hospital, Chelmsford The site at St John’s Hospital had been earmarked for 10 years for closure in favour of new housing and the scheme brought 400 new units of mixed tenures, with 35% affordable, to this part of west Chelmsford.

The resultant masterplan was rich in it’s diversity of housing types with the retention of listed hospital buildings.

These were converted to appartment of various sizes located to the centre and family housing mostly to the perifery.

Macfarlane Associates led the public realm and landscape design issues to create a creative network of open spaces linking the housing types. Conservation issues with listed buildings, TPO’s, archaeology, and protected species such as bats, newts, and swifts all played a part in the shaping of the landscape masterplan design leading to the successfully negotiated consent.

The scheme will regenerate and improve one of the key buildings in the commercial context of Uxbridge and bring a high quality design approach to this gateway site providing Uxbridge with circa 16,00sqm of commercial office (B1) floor space.

The development is bounded by the River Colne and the Grand Union Canal, with the section of the Grand Union Canal forming an important part of the proposed TFL Quietway; a key link to the surrounding infrastructure for the wider community.

King’s Triangle, Maidenhead King’s Triangle will contribute to an energetic and appealing Town Centre with a variety of experiences for both existing and new communities. This regeneration scheme will provide opportunities for much needed local retail activity, new business development, leisure amenities and residential densification.

While the King’s Triangle will be a destination of choice for those wishing to live and work in the area, it will also provide a catalyst for future regeneration.

The King’s Triangle will also be an exemplar for a new form of urban living. The growing new population of families and young professionals will take advantage of doorstop transport options, nearby waterways and natural recreation spaces. They will also live with a connection to nature and ecology through design approaches and lifestyle opportunities within the urban environment.

The M+A designed public realm occupies the ground plane and is accessible for all. Above this are semiprivate spaces - a series of communal courts which relate to each block and play a role in creating communities within the Town Centre, offering shared facilities such as play spaces, barbeque areas and places for relaxation away from the buzz of the town centre.

Statement and CV I have over 20 years of experience in the planning, design and construction of landscape space.

As a Chartered Landscape Architect, I have undertaken a full spectrum of commissions, including public realm masterplanning, inner urban regeneration, residential, retail, leisure and infrastructure developments, hospitals, schools, parks and gardens and implementation of projects within historic landscapes. However, my particular expertise sits with inner urban regeneration projects. I have won national awards for my work for 15 years.

DIPLOMACY My client base and range of commissions in the UK and overseas, is diverse and knowing how and when to make your point and when to concede, is important diplomacy for survival. A notable contract that tested my diplomacy skills was the refurbishment of Kensington Palace Gardens for The Crown Estate, acting as lead consultant – an estate with over 35 different Embassies and ambassadorial residencies along it. The tricky contract, requiring significant diplomacy and discreetness, was completed without international incident.

CPD AND LEGISLATION As I am actively planning and designing schemes in the UK, I am familiar with recent legislation and how it is changing. I regularly read new legislation and relay the significant portions to the design teams I am working with. I have been practicing as a landscape architect for over 25 years and have undertaken most types of work expected of a landscape architect in that time, from macro masterplanning to micro construction design. I encourage a weekly programme of CPD at M+A to ensure we stay knowledgeable about new products and trends in the marketplace.
