Reading Planet launches children into a life-long love of reading. There are now 786 books across 6 fantastic strands!
We are continually growing the scheme so we can support every child at each stage of their reading journey.
Start the reading journey with wordless and first word books
Inspire a love of reading with an action-packed character series
These readers have been mapped to the IB and CAIE curriculum
Widen reading horizons with a vibrant range of fiction and non-fiction for age 7+
Consolidate phonics and develop key literacy skills with Next Steps for Grade 2
Enrich teaching across your curriculum with captivating fiction and non-fiction
Target struggling and reluctant readers with high interest/low reading ability books
It’s flexible and can be used for whole-class, group and independent reading in school or at home
In Grade 1, we use the books for Guided Reading 3 times a week and for individual reading to an adult twice a week. We do half an hour phonics every day and the books do link in well. In terms of a reading scheme, it’s brilliant – it really works. It has good texts, lots of variety of texts and good support activities.
Wilton CE Primary School
We’re the only major scheme created for the current National Curriculum
Reading Planet is higher quality, has better in levels of text, better stories, more relevant content and even uses the punctuation relevant to the year group. We like that the expectations are linked to the end of Key Stage assessments – other schemes don’t match up on this.
Ancaster CE Primary School
In our catchment area, children don’t have many outside experiences, so the stories strike the right balance of being relevant and relatable, but humorous and engaging too. We have found that the books are engaging for the children and link to their interests - the children relate to the characters.
a DfE approved phonics programme and phonics-based
Rocket Phonics has put reading back at the centre of phonics and the impact of this is already evident just six months into the school year. I am confident that our Phonics
Screening Test results will be the highest they have ever been across the partnership.

Every book is available as an interactive eBook!
We think Reading Planet Online is excellent for allowing all children to enjoy a book together. Rather than it being a passive experience the children come up to the whiteboard and answer quizzes, highlight text, move things around – it all enhances the shared reading experience.
…and most importantly, children love our books!
Children love the modern feel of the stories. We have access to other schemes but they’re not used as a scheme, just additional books within the colour band for access. Children are much more engaged with Reading Planet.
Tranmoor Primary School
From the start, diversity has been at the heart of Reading Planet. We work closely with authors, diversity and inclusion experts, literacy experts, partners, and schools to create books for all children.
Characters and settings that represent all backgrounds
Traditional tales and important figures from around the world
We found the books engaging, beautifully illustrated, and a good representation of the multicultural composition of our school.
Ebor Garden’s Primary Academy
Thought-provoking and relevant topics
...Children see themselves as readers and part of the stories. The diversity featured in the Big Books, additional reading practice books and the Target Practice Readers is exceptional.
Tameside Primary Academy
Inspirational real-life stories about people from different cultures, places and professions
Embed essential early reading skills and spark a love of reading with 594 reading books for Lilac to White bands.
Everything has been created using phonics criteria based on the Letters and Sounds progressions and phases. So, you can use the strands together to support reading and phonics from Grade R to Grade 3.
*Comet Street Kids and Galaxy books are highly decodable which means they contain a limited number of above-level topic words to provide reading richness and links to support the broader curriculum. All these additional words are clearly listed on the inside front cover of each book.
Beautiful wordless and first words books

Lift-off launches young children onto their reading journey by developing essential early language skills. The books explore the aspects of Letters and Sounds Phase 1 so it’s an ideal foundation for phonics teaching.
Develop early vocabulary and communication skills through paired wordless fiction and non-fiction at Lilac band. Young children will be encouraged to retell stories in their own words whilst learning the technical skills of handling and navigating a book.
Detailed illustrations invite young readers to explore and discuss each topic
Simple words encourage children to start developing early decoding skills
Explore the concept of blending and segmenting with Lift-off First Words books for Lilac+ band. This unique series bridges the gap between wordless books and first sentences using very simple decodable words to explore familiar stories and topics.
Familiar stories are used to build confidence as children learn new reading skills
Our Grade R teacher is very enthusiastic about the wordless and the first words books, and she has had a positive reaction from volunteer parents too. Many of the book’s link with things the classes are doing which helps with vocabulary.
Suzanne Gibbons, Headteacher, Tranmoor Primary School
Rocket Phonics has a simple mission: to ensure every child keeps up rather than catches up in phonics. Our straightforward approach puts reading at the heart of phonics and uses a steady pace, whole-class teaching and consistent daily practice to create transformative results.
Rocket Phonics is incredibly easy to use. There are no elaborate routines to get your head around or to suffocate your teaching. The pedagogy is straightforward and logical:
l a steady pace and progression that children can keep up with
l beautiful ‘Big Book’ stories to use as your teaching stimulus
l rigorous and substantial pupil practice and application activities
If you’re new to teaching phonics or want full support, every single lesson is planned and scripted for you. If you are more experienced and confident, the weekly plan overviews will suit you better.

After years of using different phonics approaches, primary schools from the Wellspring Academy Trust embarked on a new journey with Rocket Phonics.
Reading Planet Rocket Phonics has it all –comprehensive online training which is accessible for all staff; detailed teacher guidance, session by session; beautiful, high-quality resources to match every point in the programme; pupil practice booklets which enable pupils across the attainment spectrum to access whole class learning together; excellent assessment materials which staff have found massively enabling and a very rich range of digital Big Books and carefully matched Target Practice Readers which the children (and staff!) absolutely love.
This programme has put reading back at the centre of the phonics programme and the impact of this is already evident, just 6 months into the school year. Given our data at this point, I am confident that our Phonics Screening Test results will be the highest they have ever been across the partnership, and I am even more excited about the impact on reading results in the coming year or two. And not because it’s all about data but because that means that the 2,000 children, I oversee in my role will be reading and writing confidently, competently and joyfully. We can’t speak highly enough of Reading Planet Rocket Phonics – Abigail Steel is an absolute genius and the team at Hodder Education have thought of absolutely everything. I cannot see another programme on the market which currently outsmarts this one.
Sam Bailey, Executive Headteacher, Wellspring Academy Trust
The pupils love the entire programme and are fully engaged throughout. They love the Big Books because the story is engaging, accessible and really brings the new phonics knowledge to life. The Target Practice Readers have been unbelievably popular amongst our pupils, because they love the success they feel when they are able to read the book in its entirety. The way the books are mapped out to be 100% decodable and become accessible at key stages of the programme has meant that even our lowest attaining pupils are not left behind.
Amy Brook, Assistant Principal and Phonics and Reading lead, Victoria Primary Academy
The structure of the sessions is excellent and allows for coverage of phonics, reading, handwriting, dictation and sentence writing. The children have learnt the routine quickly and can recall the code and alternative graphemes.
The Pupil Practice Booklets promote a good level of independence and have been a huge hit with the children, who are showing more respect and pride in their work. They like to look back at previous work and the sheets are achievable for all children, providing stretch and challenge for more proficient readers whilst also providing good scaffolding for those who benefit from additional support. The Rocket Phonics approach is a programme that has been designed with a clear understanding of how young children learn to read and what teachers need in order to do this successfully.

There was once a girl called Nina, who lived in a village at the foot of the mountains with her grandfather. Nina loved her grandfather, and he loved her. They were very happy together and wanted for nothing.
In fact, all of the villagers were happy. Spring gave them
flowers in the fields and blossom on the trees. Summer gave them days full of light and warmth. Autumn gave them the harvest of fruits and berries. Of course, Winter gave them nothing but cold and ice and snow, yet they were sure that Spring would always return.
Then one year it didn’t. The weather just turned colder and colder. The snowdrifts grew deeper, and the icicles hanging from each and every roof grew longer and longer. Everybody was worried, so they called a meeting in the village hall to decide what to do.
“This is terrible!” said one of the men. “Why is Winter still here? We’ll starve if Spring doesn’t return soon!”
“We’ll freeze to death first!” cried another.
“Someone had better go and see Grandfather Frost,” said one of the women. “After all, Winter is supposed to be his servant. We should tell him what she’s doing.”
“Well, I’m not going,” said the first man. “Grandfather Frost lives at the top of the highest mountain beyond the village. The journey there is dangerous while there’s so much snow and ice around.”

Children will discover stories from different cultures and heritages
One:
“This is what like about summer,” said Artemis, happily licking a nectar-flavoured ice-cream “Afternoons off from school, and trips to the zoo!” Ares swung his toy sword happily, swiping at the grass as he walked beside her “Especially trips to the zoo,” he agreed “Although the Harpies don’t like us to call it a zoo It’s a Monster Reserve It’s all about conservation, according to Ocypete* ”
“Did someone say my name?” A Harpy flapped down beside them, gripping a rake in one talon She folded her black wings and tilted her head “I was just mucking out the Chimera pen, but I’m available to answer all questions about the care and feeding of monsters ”
“Sorry, Ocypete,” Artemis greeted her “We didn’t mean to disturb you ”
“Young, enquiring minds are never a disturbance,” said Ocypete grandly She had flowing, dark hair and a very beautiful face, but when she smiled, the sharpness of her fangs was a little unnerving “Would you like to see feeding time with the Caucasian Eagle?” “Oh, yes please,” said Ares at once

The man pointed over to Matthias and he realised that they were talking about him Jesus looked across at Matthias, smiled and mouthed, “Thank you,” to him Wow! Matthias couldn’t believe it But there were more surprises to come
Jesus gathered his disciples around him and appeared to give them instructions
What was Jesus up to? Matthias didn’t have to wait long to find out The men disappeared into the vast crowd and began to ask people to sit down on the grass
Now that everyone was sitting down, Matthias could see
Jesus took the loaves and the fish and gave thanks to God for them He began breaking the loaves and fish into pieces and gave some to each of his disciples They headed back into the waiting crowd
The disciples handed out bread and fish to the people and Matthias noticed something strange happening It was as if their hands kept getting topped up with more and more food It wasn’t only the disciples who seemed to have more than enough Everyone they gave food to ended up with lots in their hands Matthias had totally forgotten about taking

You: How did you get involved in setting up a carnival?
CJ: Unfortunately, 1958 was a difficult year for the Caribbean community, as Caribbean people had been attacked in Nottingham and Notting Hill. So we decided that it would be a really good idea
to celebrate Caribbean culture.
You: Thanks Claudia, it’s no wonder that you are known as the ‘Mother of Carnival’!

Historical guides tell real-life stories of inspirational figures
Monday 22nd September. 4:00 p.m.
I’m supposed to draw Gypsy John’s amazing adventures in the other notebook that Nanny gave me but accidentally left that back at the caravan today. This book is my diary Nanny says that I should use this one to write about my days, so that I can remember my childhood when I’m grown up.
But really don’t think I’m going to be all that keen to read about my childhood when I’m grown up. All childhood seems to be is school!
School finished half an hour ago, but I have to stay behind while Mum and Dad are inside the classroom with my teacher, Mr Hardy. He asked them to come in so they could all talk about the fact that don’t enjoy school very much. also did badly in a maths test last week, and he wants to discuss that, too.
Introduce often untold stories from different communities through mini-series like the Caravan Diaries which follows four cousins from a Travelling family.
I’m not like my older cousin, Alfie, who is living with us on Farmer Jenkins’s land. He's always enjoyed going to school. He likes learning, and he’s good at sports. don’t join in the sports at break time, because I don’t want my classmates to laugh at how rubbish am (and don’t think would be picked, anyway).
also can’t really join in when the other kids chat about the shows they love because don’t get to watch much TV at the camp. Whenever we have too many plugs on at the same time, all the caravans lose power.
Who tried to charge their phone!?
If I got to do more drawing at school, would enjoy it more, but we rarely get to do drawing. We spend most of our time on boring lessons.

“This is Green Patrol! We never stop. And we never give up!” Martha’s mum and dad went missing five years ago. Now Martha and her friends must keep doing what they had started – to protect the planet and its animals from TITAN.
Welcome to Rockhead Primary, a school so ordinary even the teachers think it’s boring. But things start to change when a builder knocks down an internal wall and reveals something totally weird …
As she spoke, Martha received a message on her HALO phone from an unknown number. Unsure, she opened the message – and nearly dropped her phone in shock. It was a photo of her parents, waving! It looked like they were somewhere in India. The message read:
YOU THINK. YOUR COUSIN, OLIVE, WILL EXPLAIN EVERYTHING! ALL OUR LOVE, MUM & DAD XX
Martha was stunned. Her parents really were alive … They knew about her work with Green Patrol … and she was related to Olive! It was so much information to take in. Her heart fluttered with a strange mixture of joy and nerves.
She looked up to see Olive checking her own HALO phone. Olive caught her gaze and winked at her, before speaking to the rest of Green Patrol.
“Martha and I have a mission of our own to attend to,” she said.
“What’s the job?” asked Ayan.
“Mission: Reunion,” Olive grinned. “For the rest of you, TITAN is still out there, which means there will be more crimes to stop. Have a rest, enjoy your break and then be ready for my call.”
Ayan yawned. Max grabbed another slice of pizza. Shan smiled.
“No problem,” said Silva. “We are Green Patrol. We never stop. And we never give up!”
Welcome back to Greenwicks Primary, Grade 6! It’s the final year before secondary school, and lots of things are about to change for the new Grade Sixes …
The day of the Year 6 trip had finally arrived. It wasn’t even 7 o’clock in the morning when Sara’s dad dropped her off with her bags.
“You’re not going to believe it!” Sara told Lexi, as they took their seats on the coach. “I can’t go to Rosedale.”
“You’re kidding, right?” said Lexi.
Everybody Sara knew was planning to go to Rosedale Secondary School next year.
“But your new flat isn’t even that far away,” said Lexi.
“It makes no difference,” said Sara. “Mum read me the letter this morning. I’m going to Nelson Mandela High.”
“Well, that’s totally ruined my day,” Lexi grumbled. “Great.”
“It’s not my fault,” said Sara. “I didn’t choose to go to another school!”
“I didn’t say you did!” Lexi snapped. “It’s just rubbish news.”
Carter arrived in a car with Ethan. Sara felt tense thinking what he would say when he heard her news.
“This trip is going to be the best!” said Carter, throwing himself down onto a seat across the aisle.

2 Who are the main characters in the book?
3 What does the word ‘unexpectedly’ mean in the sentence, ‘Heidi didn’t want to leave Grandfather so unexpectedly, but she had no choice.’
4 In the story, Heidi dreams about the mountains when she is in Frankfurt. Why do you think this is?
5 Why do you think the author used letters sent between different characters to tell some parts of the story?
6 What did you expect Herr Sesemann would do after seeing how unhappy Heidi was at the end of Chapter 2? Was your prediction correct?
7 How do Grandfather’s feelings for Heidi change between the start and the end of the story? Use evidence from the text to explain your answer.
8 Would you prefer to live in a town or in the mountains? Give reasons for your choice.

We use the Reading Record books across the school and they are very good quality. It’s helpful to have the guidance inside for the parents – it has prompted parents to note which words
Danii Rackley, English lead, Downsway Primary School
All Reading Planet Rocket Phonics, Galaxy and Comet Street Kids books have been created using the same phonics criteria based on the Letters and Sounds progression and phases. Rocket Phonics books are fully decodable. Comet Street Kids and Galaxy books are highly decodable which means they contain a limited number of above-level words to provide reading richness and to support the broader curriculum. All these additional words are clearly listed on the inside front cover of each book.
All Reading Planet books have been carefully levelled by literacy and phonics experts according to accepted book-banding criteria as well as the age-related expectations of the current National Curriculum. Every strand of the series is built on the same progression so you can use them in parallel. The books and teaching resources have been carefully designed to provide children with practice in the full range of skills required to meet and exceed the expected standards of the national reading tests and so that they become fluent, confident readers by the end of Grade 4 –Grade 6.
Of course! Reading Planet is a whole-school scheme with 600+ books (with more to come in 2024!). So, you could choose to use it as your only reading scheme. But we understand that some schools have a range of different reading resources.
Reading Planet books are colour-levelled in accordance with widely accepted book banding guidelines. At Pink A, the text consists of a single simple sentence per doublepage spread; at Pink B, this increases to one simple sentence per page; at Red A, two simple sentences are permitted; at Red B, the sentences can begin to break over onto a second line, etc. As children progress through the colour bands, they will encounter progressively longer texts with increasing complexity in terms of vocabulary, language and concepts.
Every book in the Comet Street Kids strand is levelled and quizzed for Accelerated Reader from Renaissance Learning. Many of the Grade 4 – Grade 6 books are also levelled and quizzed and more books from Reading Planet will be added in the future. Your local consultant can provide further details. Please note that all levelling and quizzing is carried out by Renaissance Learning and not Hodder Education.
Yes, every book is available in a pack. We have a range of different pack options available so you can buy according to your needs. For example, we provide Band Packs which are ideal if you need books for a specific colour band or you can choose to buy a whole strand. Inside your pack, you will receive 1 copy of each book. If you require multiple copies of books i.e., for guided reading then you can buy individual books in multiples of 6+ or multiple packs. Your local consultant can guide you through this when you order.
We do not offer specific prices for small schools. However, we understand that every school will have different needs and budgets. So, your local consultant will be happy to create a bespoke package for you. Find their details on the back of this catalogue.
The best way to ‘try before you buy’ is via a free 30-day trial to Reading Planet Online. This will give you unlimited access to every book as an interactive eBook. You can choose from Reading Planet Online for Lilac-White (Grade R – Grade 3) and Reading Planet Online for Stars-Supernova (Grade 4 – Grade 6). There are also trials available for our phonics subscriptions: Rocket Phonics Online and Rocket Phonics Online Next Steps. If you would prefer to see physical copies of books, please contact your local consultant who will be happy to help.
I want to buy… what do I do?!
Contact your local consultant using the details on the back page. They will be happy to discuss your needs and build a bespoke package to suit your school’s budget. Alternatively, you can complete and return the enclosed order form to Customer Services using the details on the order form.
I’d love to speak to a Reading Planet school about how they use the scheme. Can you help me find a school?
Yes! We have Partner Schools across the UK who could talk to you. Your local Consultant can support you with finding a suitable school. We also have Case Studies on our website. Find them at risingstars-uk.com/readingplanet.
We think it’s a fantastic scheme and our children, parents and teachers love it. We recommend it all the time to other schools..
