The Journey of Two Sisters from Sri Lanka Saamia Aslam Girish Nandakumar Contributing Writers

Passion for education means many things to different people. For some it could be spending hours at the library looking over notes and studying textbooks. For others it may be passing on social events to prepare for an upcoming exam. For Rajintha and Jayendrika Tiskumara, it means leaving their home country and traveling across the world to attend Old Dominion University. Rajintha, the older sibling, is working towards a doctorate in electrical

engineering, after earning her master’s in physics in 2013. Jayendrika has a master’s in physics, which she obtained this past spring semester, and is currently working to obtain her doctorate in physics. The sisters voyaged all the way from Sri Lanka, a small island country just south of India. Rajintha described the weather back at home as tropical where the temperature consistently stays around 75 degrees. The sisters found out about ODU’s international programs through friends in the U.S. These friends helped the two adjust when they arrived. For the two who had never lived

on their own, having these people for support and guidance eased the transition into American life. After arriving, Rajintha experienced more of a culture surprise than a culture shock. Through the help of the Global Student Friendship organization, she was able to find a host family to live with when she initially came here. The father of the family, who was an EVMS professor, looked out for Rajintha as if she were his own child. This led her to feel like she was back home. The family members were caring as well as concerned for Rajintha’s safety and well-being. They treated her like she was part of their

own family. The parents had strong family values. “They were like my second family,” Rajintha said. Rajintha is almost done with her education here and is about to start looking for jobs in both the U.S. and Sri Lanka. Jayendrika came to America a few years after her sister to pursue her education. Fortunately, she had Rajintha to look to for support and guidance. The two sisters were inseparable, doing everything together. When apart from her sister, Jayendrika was the only Sri Lankan student in her physics class and program, which made her feel alone. The feeling of isolation

left when she joined the International Student Advisory Board, which she later became the president of. When asked what was different here from back home, Jayendrika replied that they do not have practical science-based facilities, such as the Jefferson Lab, in Sri Lanka. She also recalled how friendly the other international students were to her. Overall, they both had an unforgettable time at Old Dominion. Thankful for all of those who have helped them along the way, the sisters agree that their ODU experience is one they will cherish forever.

Senator Mark Warner Prioritizes Ending Alzheimer’s Disease Girish Nandakumar Saamia Aslam Contributing Writers

On the occasion of June being Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness month, Virginia senator Mark Warner has joined a bipartisan group to fight the disease, saying that seeking to end to Alzheimer’s is one of his top priorities. In an email to his constituents, Sen. Warner said that he has joined his colleagues to tell Congress that more work needs to be done to end this devastating disease that affects thousands of Virginians and their families. The recent push to end the

disease is due in part to the fear that the illness could triple in cases in the coming years. According to the Alzheimer’s Foundation Association, it has been estimated that as many as five million Americans may potentially have or be at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease at some point in their lives. In 2015, the total amount of care provided to Alzheimer’s patients was 18.1 billion hours. It is estimated that caring for patients suffering from the disease could cost the United States over $236 billion. As the Senate co-chair of the bipartisan congressional task force on

Alzheimer’s disease, Sen. Warner plays a crucial role in government action related to this issue. This is also very personal to the senator. He lost his mother to Alzheimer’s and has witnessed firsthand how devastating the toll is on families. Looking back to when he found out about his mother’s illness, Sen. Warner said, “I had financial resources other families don’t that I could provide, but I was helpless. We didn’t know what to do.” The Senator, in his email, called for people across the political spectrum to join him in working together to ensure better treatment and prevention.

Students to Launch Jewelry Product Line with 3D Printing Company Jason Kazi Staff Writer

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, an instructor is a person at a university who teaches a subject or skill but is not a professor. Instructor Girish Sreevatsan Nandakumar went above and beyond this semester in his Marketing Principles and Problems class, by inspiring fashion merchandising students Jasmine Piggie and Shalyse Whitfield to partner with 3DXtremes to launch their own line of 3D printed jewelry called, “The Statement Collection.” Nandakumar asked the students to develop a marketing proposal for an existing student business, 3DXtremes, with the three best proposals receiving a prize. “Shalyse and I both had no idea

what 3D printing was, and we felt under pressure since we were in a class filled with students studying marketing, I.T. and engineering,” Piggie said. Piggie and Whitfield hope that their unique line of jewelry becomes popular among the innovative female fashionistas attending Old Dominion. “Our accessories will be easily accessible to students, which is a huge plus since online shops like Etsy charge for shipping and you have to wait for days to receive your merchandise,” Piggie said. Their jewelry line will be distinct because rather than being made from inexpensive materials, “The Statement” collection will be made out of recycled plastic which is both eco-friendly and hypoallergenic for people with sensitive skin.

They plan to work with Blade Taylor, owner of 3DXtremes, to use different colored recycled plastic to create their product. Their line will initially consist of necklaces, rings, bracelets and earrings. Along with being hypoallergenic, the accessories will be made with nickel-free chains that are non-tarnishable. Depending on which style of jewelry one chooses, each accessory piece will come with its own set of advice on how to match it with your favorite outfits. The duo plans to have booths in Webb Center during activity hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They aim to make students aware of their product line with hopes of them purchasing jewelry for themselves or their loved ones. Eventually, products from “The Statement Collection” will be offered on both their own stand-alone

website and the existing 3DXtremes website. Piggie and Whitfield also plan to hold events where members of the ODU community will have the opportunity to produce their own jewelry on-site, in a no rules, avantgarde environment. The event will likely have a $5 entry fee for ODU students and $10 entry fee for nonODU students. Initially, jewelry aficionados will be able to make their own necklace pendants to put onto a necklace chain. In the future, the two inspired students plan to expand their product options to include wall decor, light fixtures, gloves, sunglasses and other products. They hope to partner with the many offices all across campus to have their products featured in them. They also want to partner with local

businesses in Ghent, downtown Norfolk and beyond to sell their products across the region. With plans to find students to intern for the company, both Piggie and Whitfield intend on continuing with the business after graduating. “We would definitely continue doing this! Fashion has always been a passion for both Shalyse and I, and I definitely think that we have found our niche in designing 3D-printed jewelry,” Piggie said. Students and members of the community who are interested in learning about the new 3D printed jewelry line should be sure to attend “The Statement Fashion Show,” scheduled for Sept. 17, 6 p.m. at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

Music festival season is in full effect, and excitement is astir as music lovers from all walks of life unite to celebrate their favorite musicians this summer. On May 21, the 757’s own Shaggfest proved to be a tremendous success as it has grown exponentially in its six years of operation. This annual event began as an outlet for local musicians in the area to gain exposure. The popular Z104 radio host Shaggy is the director, promoter and creator of Shaggfest. He works hard throughout the year to audition local talent and recruit national acts for the event, a process which is taken seriously, handled with love and approached with care. The Tidewater region of Virginia is a harbor for incredible music. It is home to notable artists and groups like The Neptunes (Pharrell and Chad Hugo), Clipse (Pusha T and Malice), Missy Elliot, Timbaland and most recently game-changing artists like D.R.A.M. and Goldlink. This year’s Shaggfest included a vast line up of local artist who performed on side stages to possibly reach the status of the artists mentioned above. A few were worthy enough to grace the main stage, including ODU junior Nathaniel Swihart, also known as Nay Nay, a hiphop artist from Virginia Beach, and Evan Barlow, a sonically charged hip-hop artist from Richmond. Main acts included Daya, Lex, Bia, Rotimi, Lil Dicky, Pusha T, Travis Scott and Major Lazer, a group which includes Grammy-winning musician, DJ and producer, Diplo. Lil Dicky was a key catalyst for the night. The comical rhymer brought his charismatic charm live to the stage as he performed songs from his debut album “Professional Rapper,” including the ever so popular “Save Dat Money” featuring Fetty Wap and Young Thug. Although it was early in the evening, Lil Dicky got fans amped. A lucky lady received an impromptu dance from him during his performance of “Lemme Freak.” Subsequently the unconventional rapper

awarded her a vegetable tray for her participation. Shaggfest has a reputation for bringing out special secret acts of the past. The audience was in for a flashback when Petey Pablo arrived and performed songs like “FreekA-Leek” and his verse from Ciara’s “Goodies.” The biggest surprise, however, was the highly unexpected G-Unit reunion that took place. The crowed rocked and moved to their favorite songs. Just as everyone gave up hope of 50 Cent’s arrival, he graced the stage like a cherry on top of an already sensational set. In addition, 50 Cent performed his new song, “I’m the Man,” off his latest mixtape, “The Kanan Tape.” The crowd chanted the words as cannons shot out a spontaneous crowning of golden confetti. Virginia Beach’s own Pusha T addressed the audience simply with two words: “I’m home.” The now president of G.O.O.D. Music began his set where it all started with “Grinding,” a song he released in the duo Clipse along with fellow Virginia Beach native Pharrell. In the spirit of legendary rapper Biggie Smalls' birthday, Pusha T performed “Untouchable,” which samples from the late artist. He performed other songs from his album, “Darkest Before Dawn: The Prelude,” and made an announcement of a new album. Travis Scott brought his rodeo to the fest. Fans in the pit chanted his name long before his arrival. The “Antidote” rapper just got off of Rihanna’s “Anti” tour and was one of the most energetic acts of the night. Known for high intensity, his show lived up to all of the hype. He worked the stage, stood on speakers and even jumped off of the platform and performed amongst the crowd beyond the pit balancing on rails. Diplo changed the whole dynamic of the night. The space became a complete dance party with vivid lights and lasers that were hypnotic and bold visuals to accompany the sounds for the night. A mix of electronic, hip-hop and pop rained down on the arena.

MIRANDA LAMBERT IGNITES THE VUHL AMPHITHEATER Adam Flores Editor-in-Chief

Miranda Lambert, one of country music’s leading ladies since the release of her 2005 debut studio album, “Kerosene,” ignited the Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater stage on May 20. The Lindale, Texas native delivered her signature sound to fans, trailblazing a rocking 80-minute set that included a few surprise covers such as a thunderous rendition of Mountain’s “Mississippi Queen.” Dubbed the “Keeper of the Flame” tour, the confident Lambert gracefully walked on stage and started her 20song set firing up the crowd with “Fastest Girl in Town,” “Baggage Claim” and “Kerosene.” Presenting the ‘tough girl’ image as a rock star and rule-breaker, she maintained a balance of reckless

abandon mixed with warmheartedness crafting her way through each song. “Thank you so much for coming out here and kickin’ off your summer with us. We appreciate it,” Lambert said. Lambert’s pistol-packing persona captivated concertgoers as she delivered a hitladen set that included rockers such as “Gunpowder & Lead,” and ballads featuring “The House That Built Me.” Determined to spearhead the women’s movement in breaking the glass ceiling of country radio, Lambert was deliberate in addressing personal issues in her music as heard lyrically within “Mama’s Broken Heart” and “All Kinds of Kinds.” The summer leg of Lambert’s tour continues to promote her latest record, “Platinum.” Released back in June of 2014, it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200

and saw it as the fifth consecutive No. 1 album on the Top Country Albums charts. This feat also made her the first artist in that chart’s history to start her career with five No. 1 albums. There is no doubt Lambert is clever, yet experimental in her song formula. She shows simplicity and sophistication through her music. Carrying the torch of country feminism, her career has seen her grow and expand musically in taking chances and just having fun with her message. “Platinum” covers new territory for Lambert as an evolving singer, guitarist and songwriter. As she explores broader issues, tracks such as “Automatic” and “Little Red Wagon,” which were in her live set, are part of the eight of 16 tracks she wrote or co-wrote on the compilation.

“Automatic” explores the everyday things such as handwritten letters sent by mail that have been seemingly replaced by newer technologies. “Little Red Wagon,” an Audra Mae cover, showcases the silly and flirtatious yet truthful side of relationships and individuality. Lambert’s eight-piece backing band showcased the best of Nashville’s worldclass musicians as they rose to the occasion on every song. From rollicking, uptempo bar bashers, to down home, traditional country ditties, each musician held a key piece to the puzzle that brought the authentic Nashville sound accompanying Lambert’s every vocal nuance to the amphitheater stage. The carefully choreographed set was enhanced by an elaborate, yet non-

obtrusive light show along with five video panes that accented the stage’s backdrop. The lush stage environment saw the band having enough room to draw the crowd in as part of the family in true down home country fashion. Lambert’s much publicized split last year from fellow country singer Blake Shelton hasn’t slowed down the country pop star. She has moved on continuing to forge her own path. Her confidence and lively spirit before a near capacity crowd exuded through her voice. After a recent seventh consecutive ACM Female Vocalist of the Year win in April to add to her long list of music accolades, Lambert looks to continue her “Keeper of the Flame” tour through the summer months and will also join Kenny Chesney on his “Spread the Love” tour.

DUMBFOUNDEAD CHALLENGES WHITE-WASHING IN ‘SAFE’

Richard Gabrintina Staff Writer

Los Angeles based rapper Dumbfoundead released the song “Safe” on May 22. On describing the nature of the release, Dumbfoundead said, “After the last Academy Awards and the regular whitewashing of Hollywood roles, I wrote this song and made this video to add my piece to the conversation.” The current discussion of AsianAmerican representation in popular entertainment has reached an alltime high. Despite the heated climate of this debate, this is nothing new. Hollywood has a history of excluding Asian-American, downplaying their individual identities and their worth as human beings. For evidence, see Mickey Rooney in his white-faced portrayal of Mr. Yunioshi in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” or Emma Stone’s Allison Ng in “Aloha,” a character of Hawaiian and Asian heritage. More recently, there’s been controversy behind Scarlett Johansson’s casting as Motoko Kusanagi in

the upcoming film adaption of the popular anime “Ghost in the Shell.” Even if there is an actual AsianAmerican on screen, which is rare, they’re often portrayed as offensive stereotypes. Asian women have countlessly been exotified and hypersexualized in the majority of their roles on screen whereas Asian men have been frequently reduced to a caricature—martial arts experts donning fu manchu facial hair; silent, dorky shutoffs often with broken English employed as a comedic punch or the reckless, violent villain. Dumbfoundead chimes in on this discussion as he raps over ambient, trap-inspired production, courtesy of Harley Mac and King Kanobby, using slightly autotuned vocals. The music video accompaniment, directed by Jay Ahn and released May 26, features Korean-American rapper Dumbfoundead sitting at a couch watching television with a wife, a son and a daughter—a depiction of the “traditional” nuclear American family. The music video visually challenges the exclusion of Asian-Americans

on screen. In between cuts, Dumbfoundead's face is cleverly plastered over iconic Hollywood and television roles—John Travolta in “Pulp Fiction,” Johnny Depp in “Pirates of the Caribbean,” Robert Downey Jr. in “Ironman,” Robert Reed in “The Brady Bunch,” Humphrey Bogart in “Casablanca,” Bob Saget in “Full House” and other figures in popular culture. From the very first verse, Dumbfoundead hits hard with delivery and social commentary. “The other night, I watched the Oscars and the roster of the only yellow men were all statues/We a quarter of the population. There’s a room of f---in’ one percenters laughing at you.” The lyrics speak for themself, but the context is taken from the 2016 Academy Awards ceremony when Chris Rock used three Asian children in a racist joke. In its entirety, Dumbfoundead finds empowerment by deconstructing the stereotypical view of AsianAmericans as being weak or docile. This sentiment is notably echoed in the chorus as he outwardly expresses

the frustration faced by many AsianAmericans: “Seems so safe, till one day things go cray,/I swear if things don’t change,/My actions can’t be blamed, (Stand up!)/And now you

MONARCH MUSIC MINUTE Hell YES!

Kaytranada ‘99.9%' In today’s digital era, countless artists flock to SoundCloud, as well other online platforms, to put themselves out there even though success is never guaranteed. Many musicians often struggle to distinguish themselves from the noise. For Kevin Celestin, however, the rise to prominence was an inevitable exception. On May 6, the Haitian-Canadian producer released his debut album “99.9%.” Born into a conservative household, Kaytranada grew up in Montreal. In his early teenage years, he began producing beats using FruityLoops in his basement. Kaytranada hustled

his way into the music industry after blowing up online with a remix of Janet Jackson’s “If” and started touring. In 2014, he signed to XL Recordings and continued touring until 2015 when he decided to pour his focus into crafting new music. “99.9%” ensnares the listener in its minefield of rhythms, percussion and heavy basslines, forming a distinctive sound by fusing multiple genres including up-tempo neo-soul, R&B, house, funk, disco and hip-hop. Kaytranada doesn’t limit himself. With the vocal talent of AlunaGeorge, GoldLink, Vic Mensa, An-

derson Paak, Little Dragon and more, the album is guaranteed to generate movement, whether it’s head-bobbing or feet gliding across the floor. Kaytranada is part of a new movement for music. Equipped with a knack for curating elements from different genres, he effectively establishes his own sound and steers music production into a new direction away from conventional beats to rich soundscapes with a dancefloor at its center.

Pierce the Veil ‘Misadventures'

For many who grew up during the prominent years of the Myspace era when emo and post-hardcore music was at a peak, the name Pierce the Veil should ring a bell. Four years since their last album, “Collide with the Sky,” fans eagerly awaited their next project until the post-hardcore outfit returned with their fourth studio album, “Misadventures,” on May 13. Pierce the Veil formed a decade ago in San Diego with brothers Vic and Mike Fuentes after their former band dissolved. Together, the two continued to write and went on to record

“A Flair for the Dramatic” with their initial record label Equal Vision. Guitarist Tony Perry and bassist Jaime Preciado joined following their initial album. The post-hardcore quartet then signed to Fearless Records in 2011. “Misadventures” opens up with “Dive In” and does just that. The listener is bombarded with electrified riffs and charged chord progressions, percussion that pounds into the soul and Vic Fuentes’s delicate, wounded vocals from the get-go. Throughout the album, the speed

and intensity of each song shifts, but Pierce the Veil never fails. “Floral & Fading” slows down into a rock ballad about Vic Fuente and his girlfriend, his voice gently gliding in the chorus, “You say you want to chase the moon like fire/Well, together we can fake our own deaths here/Just wanna be alone and watch as you all disappear.” “Misadventures” navigates the band’s journey and individual lives as the band explores new territory and polishes their signature sound. Chicago is home to big names in hip-hop, and 23-year-old Chance the Rapper has established himself as one of them. Following the success of “Acid Rap,” Chance the Rapper shook up the industry with the highly anticipated release of “Coloring Book” on May 12. “Coloring Book” dropped exclusively on Apple Music in its first two weeks, following onto other streaming services after. The independent artist has consistently released his music for free by generating revenue from merchandise sales and touring. The music establishment has been

recently shifting from emphasizing record sales to recognizing streaming. “Coloring Book” debuted in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 albums chart, becoming the first streaming-exclusive set on the list. The Recording Academy is even currently reviewing the eligibility of streaming only releases for Grammy nominations which, if accomplished, would result in one for Chance. In the four years since his first project, “10 Day,” Chance has evolved as a musician and a person. “Coloring Book” explores his rise and reflects changes in his life—the rejection of

industry standards with “No Problem,” the effects of his steep climb to success with “All Night” and having a daughter with his ex-girlfriend— while still paying homage to his Chicago roots. Backed by a wide array of artists, “Coloring Book” is an uplifting, coming-of-age story layered with spiritual motifs. It questions what makes an album an album and marks a new beginning for Chance as he concludes his trilogy of mixtapes.

Radiohead

‘A Moon Shaped Pool’ Five years since the release of “The King of Limbs,” Radiohead returned with their ninth studio album, “A Moon Shaped Pool,” on May 8. Thom Yorke and company, once again, elaborately construct eerie, sonic realms. Leading up to the release of “A Moon Shaped Pool,” the band began operating mysteriously. It started with articles springing up all over the internet ironically covering Radiohead’s supposed online disappearance—bits and traces of Radioheadrelated content were erased. Their website began to literally fade away, the webpage’s opacity slowly reducing over time until it became completely

blank. Radiohead fans in the UK even received cryptic postcards with an abstract image printed above text that read “Sing a song of sixpence that goes/Burn the Witch.” Below, an ominous tagline read “We know where you live.” The unconventional marketing strategy seems to reflect the band’s attitude toward the current state of how music is popularly disseminated online. In 2013, Thom Yorke openly expressed his disdain for Spotify. Shortly after, Radiohead surprised fans with an updated version of “Burn the Witch” and, only two days later,

“Daydreaming.” Radiohead resurrected other old songs such as “True Love Waits,” “Ful Stop,” “Identikit” and “Present Tense” into updated studio recordings. The band floats through ethereal orchestrations and piano keys in “A Moon Shaped Pool.” The record is as divinely emptying as it is enlightening and feels like skinny-dipping in cleansing, celestial waters. The listener drowns in its bleakness and the vulnerability of Yorke’s haunting timbre reflecting angst from the pool’s surface. Courtesy of XL Recordings

Mayer Hawthorne ‘Man About Town'

Courtesy of Vagrant Records

For most people, a seemingly average white dude sporting thick-framed glasses wouldn’t leave much of an impression. Give Mayer Hawthorne a clean suit and a microphone though, and that all changes. Pulling inspiration from the groove and soul of past decades, the Los Angeles-based musician released his fourth studio album, “Man About Town,” on April 8 off Vagrant Records. The Grammy-nominated artist departs from the neo-soul pop prominent in his last album “Where Does This Go,” and returns to his earlier sound from “A Strange Arrange-

ment.” In “Man About Town,” the pop-soul crooner pours the California sunshine over '70s-inspired R&B grooves. Listeners are introduced to the record with a brief, acapella track bearing the same name as the album. The catchy “Cosmic Love” follows with lush production and funky basslines. “Breakfast in Bed” is silky and sensual, beckoning the song’s subject to stay underneath the sheets. “Fancy Clothes” is laced with accents of reggae, bass grooves and a screaming guitar solo. Hawthorne sings about California

and the pursuit and loss of love in the 30 minutes of “Man About Town.” Instrumentally, the album blends vintage and contemporary sonic elements and is highlighted by the soulful crooner’s trademark falsetto. While some tracks outshine others, and the album lyrically isn’t all too compelling, there are still gems to be mined in “Man About Town,” yet one has to respect Hawthorne’s journey from his early days at Stones Throw Records, under the direction of Peanut Butter Wolf, to where he is now.

James Blake

‘The Colour in Anything’ If the weather could sing, James Blake would be muted, overcast skies that saturate the colors of his soul and everything around him. Following the 2013 Mercury Prizewinning “Overgrown,” Blake released “The Colour in Anything” on May 6. The electronic, soul songwriter from London has a penchant for the melancholy. His voice drizzles into its listener’s ears as the production slowly rumbles with light thunder. In 2013, Blake worked with Chance the Rapper on “Life Round Here.” In the latter half of Drake’s “0 to 100/The Catch Up,” Blake’s voice can be heard.

Together with Beyoncé, the two worked on “Forward” off her 2016 album “Lemonade.” In “The Colour in Anything,” Blake enlists the help of Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, Frank Ocean and producer Rick Rubin. Vernon, who has collaborated with Blake in the past, most notably on “Fall Creek Boys Choir,” sings along in “I Need A Forest Fire.” The two echo “To burn it like cedar/I request another dream” together in the chorus. In a Pitchfork interview, Blake expressed how Ocean, credited as a co-writer, influenced him by saying,

“Frank was a huge inspiration for this record: his process, the way he writes, the strength of what he does, who he is.” Throughout the album, Blake’s tranquil vocals gracefully drift over ambient production. Between emotional piano arrangements and electronic desolation, Blake breaks from conventional songwriting structures and beautifully paints rich, sonic textures in all 17 tracks off “The Colour in Anything.”

‘Bad Roomies’

2015 | Unrated | 93 min. When best friends and long-time roommates Bobby (“The Sandlot’s” Patrick Renna) and Raymond (Tommy Savas) suddenly find themselves down a roomie, the fowl-mouthed pair begin their search for another tenant. After interviewing a series of seemingly innocent candidates, each spoiled by one glaring flaw, the boys lay their eyes on Chloe (Annie Monroe), a long-legged and soft-spoken brunette who’s willingness to party seals the deal. At first, the unconventional living arrangement appears to be nothing short of blissful, in spite of Bobby and

Ray’s mutual attraction to Chloe and Bobby’s rightfully suspicious girlfriend. But one night changes all of that and the once harmless Chloe reveals her true nature. Bobby and Raymond team up to defend their home and their lives at points in the dark comedy “Bad Roomies.” Aesthetically, “Bad Roomies” packs a hard-hitting punch, one that misses its target but no less has a lot of force behind it. With stylistic elements of film noir, a captivating score and intriguing camera angles, “Bad Roomies” ranks high in production value. But what good are these senso-

ry indulgences if they don’t serve the narrative? If anything, the amount of effort put into the film’s look and feel only magnifies its lack of focus and confusing plot. Equally as unsettling as some of the film’s subject matter is Renna’s performance, which hasn’t evolved much since his days as a freckle-faced little league ball player. The premise is simple. The trajectory it follows is unexpected and not in a good way, yet somehow audiences won’t be surprised by “Bad Roomies.” This film is available on Netflix.

Modern day Huck Finn (Kyle Callner) and his partner in crime and boyhood mentor Tom Sawyer (Adam Nee) are all grown up now. Huck has recently been released from the county prison after serving a brief stint for petty theft and Tom is a crooked cop who, in an attempt to stick it to his more successful older brother, proposes that the gang from Mark Twain’s beloved tale reunite to pull off the ultimate heist in “Band of Robbers.” When their ridiculous plan goes awry though, Tom and the boys embark on wild goose chase to cover

their tracks and rescue one of their innocent accomplices from the hands of Injun Joe. Tom promises his brothers fame, glory and a hidden treasure in this contemporary adaptation of an American classic. “Band of Robbers” received generally favorable reviews upon release and a nomination for the coveted Zeitgeist Award at the Los Angeles Film Festival. Winner of the Director’s Choice Award at the Naples Film Festival, this quirky crime comedy has been compared to works directed by Wes Anderson and the Coen Brothers.

While some critics resent the level of attention Nee pays to honoring every detail of Twain’s original story of adventure, others celebrate it. Stylistically sound and hilariously adherent to the literature, “Band of Robbers” will please film buffs and Americana enthusiasts alike. Performances by Hannibal Buress and Matthew Gray Gubler elevate those of the lesser known cast members while still maintaining their indie charm. This film is available on Netflix.

Fallout of Fear’s Album Release Show Features Eclectic Mix of Local Artists Julia Creamer Contributing Writer On May 21, Fallout of Fear celebrated the release of their new album “AMMIT” with a high-energy metal show that rocked The NorVa. The show featured performances from local metal bands Awaken Cthulhu, Cleaved and Generator. It was a night filled with shredding guitars, driving bass lines and raw musical talent. Fallout of Fear is a progressive metal band based out of Newport News. The four-piece band consists of frontman and guitarist Geoff Gulbranson, back-up vocalist and guitarist Kmaster8, bassist MONSTER and drummer Trent Johnson. Fallout of Fears’s post-apocalyptic attire and eclectic metal sound has gained them a large fan base within Virginia’s local music circuit. Prior to the release of “AMMIT” was their victory at FM99’s Battle of the Bands, a win which awarded them the opportunity to play at the Lunatic Luau, one of the largest rock events in Hampton Roads. The show began with Awaken Cthulhu, a theatrical nu metal band hailing from Virginia Beach. The three-piece metal band features “The Priest” on bass guitar and lead vocals, “The Inseminator” on drums and “The Harvester” on electric guitar. Awaken Cthulhu played a 30-minute

set filled with high speed guitar riffs, intense drum play and throat-ripping vocals. Awaken Cthulhu derives their name from H.P. Lovecraft’s insidious sea god Cthulhu. The members of the band wore blood soaked masks and ceremonial robes and claimed to be servants of the mythical creature. They warned the crowd about the awakening of the malevolent demon by performing high-speed metal ballads like “Bloodbath” and “Eating Babies.” The band seeks to create their own subgenre of rock music called “sea monster metal.” Cleaved, a heavy metal band from Gloucester, kicked off their debut performance with sound and fury. Highlights of the band’s performance were “Bloodline Immolation,” a highspeed death metal song that discusses the use of humans as weapons, and “Obliterate,” which is a hard-hitting metal ballad about losing everything to an unstoppable force. The four-piece consists of vocalist Brent Engle, bassist and back-up vocalist Kurt Kim, guitarist John Brodsky and drummer Richard Engle. Cleaved’s musical style is a blend of thrash, death and slam metal. Their sound is reminiscent of Lamb of God, Cannibal Corpse and GWAR. Generator, a hard-hitting metal band from Norfolk, performed on The NorVa stage for the first time.

The four-piece metal band features vocalist Jack Sakrals, guitarist Mark Strange, bassist Allan “Slug” Shires and drummer Alex Dempsey. Highlights of Generator’s performance include “Grindstone,” a thrash metal song and “Stuff Me in What,” a high-energy speed metal song. Generator’s thrash-infused speed metal combined with Sakrals’ WWE-inspired trash-talk made for a wildly entertaining and memorable set. Fallout of Fear finished out the night with a high-energy performance featuring songs from their new album including “Flawless,” a hip-hop-infused rock song with a guest performance by local rap artist Jack Ledger. Fallout of Fear’s new album is an experimental progressive metal album that contains elements of rap, speed metal and soft rock. Toward the end of the band’s set, they played songs from their previous albums, “Castle Bravo” and “Human Epidemic,” including “Cities of One,” “Revelation” and “The Chosen.” Fallout of Fear’s album release show was more than just a way to promote their new work. It was a show that brought a diverse group of metal fans and their favorite local musicians together in an effort to support local musical talent.

The seemingly vanished band The Lumineers is back after four years since their highly successful self-titled debut album. Despite pressure to release new music sooner rather than later, the folk rock band returned with their second album, “Cleopatra,” on April 8. The Lumineers was founded by frontman Wesley Schultz and percussionist Jeremiah Fraites. When Joshua Fraites, brother and best friend of the two band members, died of an overdose in 2002, The Lumineers used their music as a way to cope. In 2010, Neyla Pekarek joined as a cellist and vocalist. In April 2012, The Lumineers released their self-titled debut album which reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 album chart back in January 2013. After the success of their debut album, the next four years for The Lumineers was nothing but touring, writing and recording. The band decided the first album was rushed and wanted to put every ounce of their efforts into their second album. Finally, “Cleopatra” was released, and with their sound almost unchanging, fans returned in admiration. The album features 11 tracks of profound tales and touches on more complex and authentic topics, all while keeping an upbeat, folk sound. The song “Cleopatra,” the basis of the entire album, describes an experience Schultz had with a taxi driver in the Republic of Georgia. He describes the woman as badass with a cigarette in her mouth as she picks you up from the airport. Schultz said, “We live in a country

fully of Instagram and pictures of life more beautiful than you ever thought it could be and [Cleopatra] comes from the exact opposite perspective and she doesn’t ask for pity. She has a willingness to confront life.” Originally for the soundtrack of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” “Gale Song” is an endearing tale from the other side. The song portrays Gale’s perspective, the lover left behind. The song is easily relatable to anyone who struggles through with distance. “Ophelia” references people’s love of fame and how the spotlight can seem endless yet the reality is you’re only new and great for a brief moment. “Angela” is a tale of getting older and moving into a new life. But the song may also reference mental illness and the problems which accompany it. “War in the corners of your mind” and “wilderness inside” shows Angela’s internal struggles. She is running from her town, thinking that is where the problem lies, but discovers that the problems tend to follow. The narrator is in love with the girl, watching her flee from her problems, hoping she will eventually find peace. The Lumineers have had a strong comeback with their new album. The long pause has definitely proved that the time and effort the band put into composing this emotional yet uplifting album was well worth the wait. The Lumineers begin their U.S. tour May 31, and will continue through October. The Lumineers will be at the Richmond International Raceway on Sept. 16, along with BØRNS and Rayland Baxter.

FOREMAN FIELD REBIRTH

Harry Howard Jr. Sports Editor

On June 9, Old Dominions University’s Board of Visitors approved a plan to rebuild Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium, originally built in 1936. The stadium currently holds only 20,118 fans, and is one of the smallest stadiums in Conference USA. The stadium’s small stature allows rowdy fans close proximity to the field, giving the Monarchs a home field advantage. For seven straight seasons, games have sold out and the hopes are to continue that streak in the reconstructed stadium. Since the team moved up to the NCAA Division 1 Football Bowl Subdivision, improving the stadium became

a top priority. To figure out where and how to construct a new stadium, ODU administered a survey. The results determined that fans wanted more comfortable seating, more food options, restrooms and for the field to stay in the same location. "This decision, based on solid research and the preferences of the Monarch community, positions the university for the future within a bold, yet sensible framework," ODU President John R. Broderick said. "I'm excited that we will enhance the Foreman Field experience for fans without putting additional financial pressure on our students." The first phase of revamping Foreman Field will be a $55 million project and will

involve rebuilding the East and West bowls, removing all bleachers and adding in new chair-back seats. This will increase capacity by over 2,000 and give fans more comfortable seating with knee room. Although phase one will only give the stadium 2,000 more seats, at the end of all construction, the stadium will eventually seat over 30,000. "Our first priority with the renovation of our current stadium was to enhance and solidify our fan experience in the short-term, while preparing for future stadium expansion and market demand in the long-term," Director of Athletics Wood Selig said. "The fact that every single one of our sideline seats will be chair-back with ample leg

room, with enhanced site lines and elevation, will considerably improve our fans' in-stadium experience. We will be the only ConferenceUSA stadium and among only a few college football stadiums to have all chair-back seating." The debut of the Foreman Field Rebirth will be no earlier than 2019 football season. Head coach Bobby Wilder said, "I want to thank the university administration and Board of Visitors for their continuing strong support of our football program. We look forward to playing in one of the premier university stadiums in the country, in front of sellout crowds."

The Spire not only keeps track of your steps and other health data, but also measures your breathing to help you relax. There’s also the Lumo Run capris that have a tracker embedded in the lining of them. If you’re looking for something more stylish, there’s the Vivid Wellness pendant tracker that looks just like a piece of jewelry. Alternatively, if something more simplistic is your style, there’s the Withings Go, which is a basic version of the other fitness tracking watches on the market. 3. Portable electric scooters You’ll probably want to go out and about over the summer break. Por-

table electric scooters, like the URBE and Xcooter, will get the job done! There’s also the Emicro One, which has a price tag of $1,000. It’s probably not the most affordable summer gadget out there, but if you can save up the money for one, these scooters are foldable to allow them to fit into small spaces. You’ll be able to enjoy the summer air outside while running errands close to home. Use it to get from point A to point B while saving a little bit of money on gas. 4. Phone accessories Odds are you’ll have your phone with you this summer. To help keep your phone charged, there’s the Juice Pack H2OPro. Made for the iPhone 6 and 6S, it not only charges your phone, but also protects it from water. For the underwater selfies you may want to take, you can use the Splash Camera Housing, also for the iPhone 6 and 6S. This allows you to safely take your phone underwater and take pictures. Speck has released the Pocket VR for

virtual reality enthusiasts, which allows you to turn your smartphone into a virtual reality device. Finally, to keep your phone clean, there’s the PhoneSoap. The device has two UV-C lamps that kill germs that may be on your phone. In addition to cleaning your phone, which takes about four minutes, the device also charges your phone. 5. Drones Finally, there are drones. Despite being controversial, they can still be used for fun. The Onagofly Nano Drone kicked off with an Indiegogo campaign. The five inch drone is capable of avoiding obstacles and live streaming video. Released in September 2015, the Hexo+ is another drone that can help make your summer more eventful. If you’re planning on going on summer adventures and want to record them, pick up a drone, attach a camera to it and let the drone help you do the recording.

THE 2016 OLYMPICS AND TECHNOLOGY Audra Reigle Staff Writer Thousands of people will be heading to Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Summer Olympics. In addition to hosting this year’s Olympics, Rio has also been the site of political unrest. With the Olympics fast approaching, the city has been making technological improvements in security to keep citizens and visitors safe. As a part of these improving technologies, four cameras tethered to balloons will fly over the city. These cameras, named Simera, can see the entire city. Since everything it catches will be stored, information can later be viewed much like a movie, with the information being able to be viewed multiple times. The device is made up of 13 cameras that can zoom in on several things at once, all while getting the big picture. However, these surveillance technologies are not welcome by all. Some have viewed it as an invasion of privacy since the cameras hover above omnisciently, storing what they’ve

done and when they did it. Since these eyes in the sky can go almost anywhere, there are concerns about people not being able to consent to being watched by these devices, and any information gathered being used against their will. At the same time, these technologies could allow officials to catch criminals faster. With the devices storing everything and the fact that they have the power to be replayed, officials can examine what the camera caught at the time the incident happened and ultimately use that information to catch the criminal. The threat of political unrest has loomed over the city for some time now, also affecting the upcoming Olympics. Improvements to the country’s communication networks, travel and cyber security have been made in preparation of the event. Cisco has been helping the Olympic committee improve Rio’s infrastructure in communications. Communication between Brazil’s airports has also been improved with the help of CISCEA and SITA. The country has

also been preparing for potential cyber attacks as they fear hackers may try to attack during the Olympics, much like they did when Brazil hosted the 2014 World Cup. Ultimately, Rio de Janeiro will not just act as the site for the games, but also act as a testing ground for future technological advances in security, communications, travel and cyber security. The cameras that will hover over the city for the duration of the games could ease the fears of those that believe their security will be compromised. With thousands of people preparing to travel to Rio for this event, visitors to the country could appreciate the improvements in communication among airports within the country. While the political unrest will act as a dark cloud over this year’s Olympics, it does not seem to be stopping the country from working to make Rio as safe as possible for its visitors, nor does it seem to be stopping the athletes from preparing for the event.

SENATORS AIM TO ELEVATE US CYBER COMMAND Ross Reelachart Technology Editor The cybersecurity of the United States might be getting a boost in effectiveness and scope if an amendment introduced by U.S. Senators, including Virginia Sen. Mark R. Warner, is passed. According to a press release from May 25, U.S. Senators introduced an amendment to the National Defense

Authorization Act, or NDAA, that would “elevate Cyber Command to a unified combatant command.” Currently, Cyber Command, or CYBERCOM, is a part of U.S. Strategic Command and serves as the electronic warfare and cyberspace operations arm of the U.S. government. Despite this status, CYBERCOM does not have the capability necessary to pursue its mission, according to the senators.

On the most technical level, elevating CYBERCOM to a combatant command under the NDAA means that CYBERCOM will become an official section of the Department of Defense, and will be included in the department’s budget and expenditures. Along with the currently existing nine unified combatant commands, which oversee an area designated by geography or function, CYBERCOM will become a part of

the basic structure for how the president commands and controls U.S. military forces. While it is too early to begin speculating on what this could mean for CYBERCOM, and the cybersecurity of the U.S., this amendment could prove more beneficial than detrimental. CYBERCOM, as a military section, is far more interested in safeguarding national secrets and information, such as nuclear data,

from outside sources than they are with probing into the personal information of the average citizen. The amendment itself could signal a shift in legislation regarding the modern world of computers and cyberspace, as it seems some senators are aware that there are existing parts of the U.S. government far more versed in computers and the Internet than they are.

E3 PREDICTIONS Ross Reelachart Technology Editor One of the biggest events in the video game industry is coming around again, and as always, its mere presence serves as an illustration of the evolution of the industry as a whole. The Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, has been one of the largest industry events in the gaming world since 1995, where big publishers and developers show off the newest hardware and all the games that everyone will want in the coming months. It is also a reflection of the trends and growth of the industry. E3 is where new consoles are revealed, where the largest audiences are reached and where big announcements are made. This year, the buzz surrounding E3 may not be who or what shows up, but who or what does not make an appearance. In the past, most of the major game publishers have been present at E3, usually with their own conference that could be watched by the press and public alike. But within the last few years, many publishers have reduced their presence or not appeared at all. Nintendo continues its recent trend of not appearing at E3, rather holding its own “digital event” during

E3. This year, Activision and EA are pulling similar stunts. In the changing world of the internet, where a massive and dedicated audience could be reached with small digital events targeted right at consumers, more publishers might be moving to this model. However, E3 itself is still alive and strong. Sony and Microsoft will still be holding conferences at the Los Angeles Convention Center, and there are still plenty of E3-adjacent events from major publishers. Here are a few things to look out for when E3 2016 goes live. Xbox 1.5, PS4.5 and VR According to reports from Kotaku, Polygon and The Verge, Microsoft is currently working on an upgrade or successor to the Xbox One. Supposedly going by the codename “Scorpio,” this new console “will be over four times more powerful than the current Xbox One.” Such an upgrade would allow Scorpio to utilize new virtual reality hardware like the Oculus Rift. A more likely option, however, is that Microsoft is working on its own proprietary virtual reality hardware, which is supported by the appearance of an “Xbox One Virtual

The Mace & Crown

Reality” section on Microsoft’s official E3 website. Most of the news from Microsoft followed closely on the heels of reports that Sony is also working on some kind of improvement on the current Playstation 4 console. Several reports came out following the Game Developers Conference earlier this year, and were corroborated by the Wall Street Journal, about an upgrade codenamed, “Neo.” Such an upgrade would also coincide with the announcement of Playstation VR from GDC itself. For now, it seems that there will be no announcements of completely new consoles from Microsoft or Sony at E3 2016. Instead, there will likely be announcements of console “upgrades” to support in-house VR.

relative silence in the past year. While the Wii U was generally well-received as an improvement over the original Wii, both in terms of hardware and games, the latter days of the console has shown that Nintendo is winding it down. The last Star Fox and Paper Mario games released to

Nintendo needs the NX Nintendo has not had a live conference at E3 since 2013, and stopped having a physical presence at the expo in 2014. Despite moving most of its big news and announcements to its digital events, Nintendo still manages to have an impact during E3. This year, however, Nintendo is going to need to do something big to win over fans who have noticed the company’s

mixed reviews, and the only major title that’s coming is a Zelda game with little else. So it should come as no surprise that most fans are expecting some kind of official news regarding the long rumored “Nintendo NX” console.

GAMES OF E3: EDITOR'S CHOICE Ross Reelachart Technology Editor The Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, is easily the biggest event in the video game industry. Despite some downsizing in recent years, E3 is still the place for developers and publishers to make a big show of gaming plans for the foreseeable future. Not only will the usual gaming press be there, but the mainstream media will also be present. While publishers will inevitably try to sell consumers on new hardware, like new consoles or virtual reality headsets, gamers still tune in to TV broadcasts or online livestreams to see the games. Whether they are anticipating another entry in a beloved series or a brand new IP, gamers always tend to focus on the games rather than hardware. The following

are a few confirmed games that will be seen at E3. Battlefield 1 (DICE) This year’s E3 might turn out to be a strange year for the “yearly shooter” genre. When “Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare” was announced earlier this year, it was met with cynicism. Yet when “Battlefield 1” was announced shortly afterward, there was a warmer reception. The difference in reaction could be a sign that even the most ardent supporters of cookie cutter first-person shooters are starting to grow tired of the old formula. Where “Infinite Warfare” is yet another “future” Call of Duty, “Battlefield 1” is a steampunk, WW1-inspired take on the classic Battlefield formula. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (Eidos Montreal)

As the follow up to the 2011 game “Deux Ex: Human Revolution,” and the latest entry in the venerable Deux Ex series, “Mankind Divided” will need to demonstrate that it can still pull off the open-ended gameplay the series is known for. Set in the cyberpunk world of 2029, players take on the role of Adam Jensen, a man heavily outfitted with robotic augmentation, as he uncovers a sinister conspiracy in a world where “natural” and “augmented” humans are segregated. The Deus Ex series has always tried to pride itself on allowing players to solve any situation in any way they see fit. Players usually have the option of a direct fight approach, a stealthy circumvention or a trickier “social” route. While the series mostly managed to allow such diverse playstyles, the previous entry was criticized for not having the breadth of options it

purported to possess. Such problems were addressed in the director’s cut version, but “Mankind Divided” will need to have those issues addressed right from the beginning. Dishonored 2 (Arkane Studios) The first “Dishonored” game was a surprise hit in 2012, as both an original IP and as a game that followed in the footsteps of Deus Ex by allowing varied playstyles. Now “Dishonored 2,” which was first announced at E3 2015, hopes to expand on the stealthaction of its predecessor with a new character and a new setting. This year, “Dishonored 2” needs to show some actual gameplay at E3, as the only existing media of it are some screenshots and a pre-rendered trailer. The gameplay would need to demonstrate something genuinely new and interesting about the game. Otherwise, gamers might get the impression that, while it may be good, “Dishonored 2” is just a “newer version of the first game.” Call of Cthulhu (Cyanide Studio) Announced only a few days before E3 was set to begin, “Call of Cthulhu” is set to be the latest in a genre of games that does not get as much love as it should. The “cosmic horror” mythos penned by H.P. Lovecraft has

The Mace & Crown

long served as a font of inspiration from many games, such as FromSoftware’s “Bloodborne”, but only a few have attempted to directly adapt the written works themselves. Based on a pen-and-paper RPG that was itself based on an actual Lovecraft story, “Call of Cthulhu” will have players taking on the role of Edward Pierce, a private investigator in 1920s Boston. While investigating a mysterious death on Darkwater Island, Pierce finds himself embroiled in the island’s disturbing eldritch history. Judging by the press release, the game might include some version of the fan favorite “Sanity Mechanic”, which was used to great effect in an older Lovecraft-inspired game “Eternal Darkness”.

My Time at ODU, Thanks to the Global UGRAD Program Roohi Patel Girish Nandakumar Contributing Writers “God has something better written for you,” my mother said when I got rejected from the first exchange program I applied to. Based on the events of the past year, I can now say that God really did have something better planned for me. It began when I got an email calling for applications for a semester exchange program in the U.S. My life was about to change. My dad advised me to make the best of the opportunities available to me and apply for the program. After applying, I was the only student shortlisted from my campus, and that made me feel good. After completing all the required paperwork, I waited for the final results. In May, I finally got a call. “Hi Roohi! I would like to let you

know that you have been selected for the Global UGRAD Semester Exchange Program,” Ms. Nerrissa Gomes, my coordinator from Mumbai, said. I was one of five students from India selected to spend a semester in the USA. Later that year, I found out that I would be studying at Old Dominion University. I was not sure what kind of experiences would unfold during the course of the coming months. All I knew about U.S. was from the TV shows and movies I had seen, as well as the news I had read. “Are the people going to be exactly the same as they are in the movies?” “Will I be able to do all of it by myself?” Such questions ran through my head as I said goodbye to my loved ones who came to see me off at the airport. I was all set to learn an array of different things in this short period

of four months. During my first day in the U.S., I missed my flight from New York to Norfolk. Tired of all the travelling already, I was scared. I managed to make it to Norfolk the next day after all the flight rescheduling and cancellations, and as we left the left the airport, my first reaction to Norfolk was overwhelming. I was awestruck by the beautiful city! I took the classes I had wanted to take but had been unable to back home. In every class, I came across a new way of learning. It was an amazing experience that enhanced my critical thinking. I also had a chance to get to know all kinds of people. From professors to classmates, everyone was welcoming. What made it more interesting was the fact that almost everyone I met wanted to know more about the culture I brought with me. It was amazing to see how

everybody’s opinion was important and respected. What I loved about the academic structure at ODU was the array of options students had in order to make their study as productive and useful as possible. Moreover, although the pressure would build up, it was constructive in nature, so that it motivated the student to study. The evaluation system was on par, from quizzes to writing papers. Apart from academics, this trip also provided me with opportunities to try new things. I got a chance to travel alone for the first time. Then came my attempt at learning ballet from a two-month workshop at ODU. I also got to try to cook with my roommates, without the help of my mom. The trip also allowed me to get to know more people. To my amazement, I realized quickly that Americans were not the kind of the people

The Mace & Crown

@maceandcrown

@maceandcrown

I had thought they would be. I met not only Americans, but also others from different parts of the world, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Korea and Iran. They brought with them their own unique cultures and stories of how they got here. We all shared the same story of being international students trying to adjust to life on an American campus. As the program came to a conclusion, I reflected on everything I had learned. If not for my time in the U.S., I wouldn’t be the person I am today. The experience helped me grow, learn to be independent and confident, make lifelong friends and understand a culture that was once completely alien to me. I couldn’t have wished for anything more!

Words from President Obama on the Tragic Orlando Attack Today, as Americans, we grieve the brutal murder -- a horrific massacre -- of dozens of innocent people. We pray for their families, who are grasping for answers with broken hearts. We stand with the people of Orlando, who have endured a terrible attack on their city. Although it’s still early in the investigation, we know enough to say that this was an act of terror and an act of hate. And as Americans, we are united in grief, in outrage, and in resolve to defend our people. I just finished a meeting with FBI Director Comey and my homeland security and national security advisors. The FBI is on the scene and leading the investigation, in partnership with local law enforcement. I’ve directed that the full resources of the federal government be made available for this investigation. We are still learning all the facts. This is an open investigation. We’ve reached no definitive judgment on the precise motivations of the killer. The FBI is appropriately investigat-

ing this as an act of terrorism. And I’ve directed that we must spare no effort to determine what -- if any -inspiration or association this killer may have had with terrorist groups. What is clear is that he was a person filled with hatred. Over the coming days, we’ll uncover why and how this happened, and we will go wherever the facts lead us. This morning I spoke with my good friend, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, and I conveyed the condolences of the entire American people. This could have been any one of our communities. So I told Mayor Dyer that whatever help he and the people of Orlando need -- they are going to get it. As a country, we will be there for the people of Orlando today, tomorrow and for all the days to come. We also express our profound gratitude to all the police and first responders who rushed into harm’s way. Their courage and professionalism saved lives, and kept the carnage

from being even worse. It’s the kind of sacrifice that our law enforcement professionals make every single day for all of us, and we can never thank them enough. This is an especially heartbreaking day for all our friends -- our fellow Americans -- who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. The shooter targeted a nightclub where people came together to be with friends, to dance and to sing, and to live. The place where they were attacked is more than a nightclub -- it is a place of solidarity and empowerment where people have come together to raise awareness, to speak their minds, and to advocate for their civil rights. So this is a sobering reminder that attacks on any American -- regardless of race, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation -- is an attack on all of us and on the fundamental values of equality and dignity that define us as a country. And no act of hate or terror will ever change who we are or the

values that make us Americans. Today marks the most deadly shooting in American history. The shooter was apparently armed with a handgun and a powerful assault rifle. This massacre is therefore a further reminder of how easy it is for someone to get their hands on a weapon that lets them shoot people in a school, or in a house of worship, or a movie theater, or in a nightclub. And we have to decide if that’s the kind of country we want to be. And to actively do nothing is a decision as well. In the coming hours and days, we’ll learn about the victims of this tragedy. Their names. Their faces. Who they were. The joy that they brought to families and to friends, and the difference that they made in this world. Say a prayer for them and say a prayer for their families -- that God give them the strength to bear the unbearable. And that He give us all the strength to be there for them, and the strength and courage to change.

We need to demonstrate that we are defined more -- as a country -- by the way they lived their lives than by the hate of the man who took them from us. As we go together, we will draw inspiration from heroic and selfless acts -- friends who helped friends, took care of each other and saved lives. In the face of hate and violence, we will love one another. We will not give in to fear or turn against each other. Instead, we will stand united, as Americans, to protect our people, and defend our nation, and to take action against those who threaten us. May God bless the Americans we lost this morning. May He comfort their families. May God continue to watch over this country that we love. Thank you.
