A strong foundation :+: BY STEFANIE DECKER
Swedish First Hill, Seattle Like any construction project, it all starts with a strong foundation. When Swedish Medical Center was searching for the ideal mechanical partner to help them build the largest hospital project in the Pacific Northwest, they didn’t need to look any further than MacDonald-Miller and our Campus Healthcare Group, led by manager Ruben Canas. MacMiller was awarded the Swedish First Hill Transformation project based on nearly 15 years of building trust. We have developed and completed hundreds of projects across Swedish campuses, many of which consisted of complex scopes that required meticulous

planning and execution. In combination with strong ties to the project’s general contractor, Sellen Construction, that foundation earned MacMiller a unanimous vote as the preferred partner for this massive undertaking. This redevelopment of two blocks of the existing campus will boast more than 1,300,000 SF of space. Northwest Tower, a new 17-story procedural center, will house emergency services, a cafeteria, 37 operating suites, sterile processing, critical care, and support services. Block 95 will be a new 5-story medical office building housing a central emergency power generator plant, 120,000 gallon emergency fuel farm, laboratory, café, and pedestrian bridge connecting to the existing hospital.

The project’s new structures will connect via service tunnel, which houses utilities allowing the two buildings to operate in a virtual heating, cooling, steam, and emergency power plant. Since 2001, Swedish has relied on Ruben and his team for the majority of their sustaining, retrofit, compliance and tenant improvement work. Once again, they’re depending on our healthcare team to flawlessly execute a long list of complicated enabling projects that will allow the project to move according to schedule. We are currently in the heart of the preconstruction effort, supporting the design progress on the largest project in Seattle’s history.
SHOUT OUT! TO JON FUNK “I want to thank MacDonald-Miller and especially Jon Funk for going above and beyond in customer service this week for Inventprise and our staff here. Jon was so patient and friendly when he came in for a quarterly HVAC maintenance at our facility, and we bombarded him with several other issues we were having. He addressed each of these for us and actually fixed one of the things on the spot. We appreciated his calm disposition and we want to give him our kudos. Thanks!”
