FoundationsetforAMC’s ‘winning scheme of maneuver’debutto thePacific

SCOTTAIRFORCEBASE,IL—Air MobilityCommand culminated itsfive-day mid-planningconferenceforMobilityGuardian2023on Feb. 17,movingforwardwithplanstosubstantiatethecommand’s winning scheme ofmaneuverinthe Pacific.
Approximately 180representativesfrom sevennations, theDepartment ofState, U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, Headquarters Air Force, U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, and U.S. MarinescontributedtoMG23development atScottAir ForceBase, Illinois.
“Comingtogetherlikethisisashowof unityandashow ofresolve,” said Lt Gen. RandallReed,AMC deputycommander. “It isacollectionofthose around theworldwhoreallybelieveinfreedom.”
TheMAFexercisewill nest underaseriesof exercisesled by U.S. IndoPacific Commandandallowlike-mindednationstodeepentrustandrealisticinteroperabilityon security challengesinthe region.
“MobilityGuardianisthecohesivegluethatenablesIndo-PacificCommand’sLargeScaleGlobalExercisethissummer,” saidLt. Col. Jacob Parker, MobilityGuardian23Director. “We’reprovidingthemeaningfulmaneuver forthecombined JointandCoalitionforcesexercisingtogetherintheater.”
MG23’sinaugural debuttothe Pacifictheaterincludescomplexintegration withalliedand partnernationstestingthe Mobility Air Force’slargeforce, agilecombatemploymentandhumanitariananddisasterassistance incontested anddegradedenvironmentsspanningover 3,000miles.

JOINTBASESANANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas(AFNS)—For thefirsttime, thisyear’s contestincludesbothtwo-dimensionaland three-dimensionalworksofart.Thesubmissionwindowisextendedto allowartiststimetosubmitintheiragecategory. Anyauthorizedpatron ofDAFfacilitiesbeginning at agesixcanparticipate.
“We’reexcitedto add3Dartto thecontest,” said JamieCompton, Air ForceServicesCenterCommunityandLeisurebranch chief. “Ithas beenrequestedbythefieldsowe’rehopingthataddingittotheprogramopensupthecontesttopeoplewho may not haveparticipated otherwise.”
With 3Dart, thecontestisexpandedto itemssuchashand-made sculptures, basketweaving, jewelry, potteryandquilting, aslongasit’s threedimensional.
For2Dart,artistscancreatesubmissionsinoil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel,mixedmedia,gouache, eggtempera, penandink, charcoal,coloredpencil,scratchboard,markersandmetalpoint Digitalartisn’t included inthe contest.

“Anytimewecanencouragesomeonetocontinuetheirpassion,inthis caseart,orencouragesomeonetotrysomethingnew, wearehelpingto createamoreresilientindividual.”

“MacDillhas been awesome,” said Freeman. “The6thARWAirmenhavebeenveryaccommodating, fromairfield managementto the KC-135 refuelings, they’ve providedtheseresourcesthatallowustocontinuetooperateat a high tempo.”
The33rdFWwillcontinue conductingoperationsoutof MacDillAFBfor3weeksinorder tomaintaintheirreadinesscapabilitiesbeforeheadingback to EglinAFB.
“Beingabletoexpand our knowledgeworkingwithdifferent aircraft, aircrewandmaintainers ensuresthatwearepreparedfor any futurepotentialconflicts,” saidBingham “Welookforward tocontinuingtotrainwith other unitsfromacrossthe DOD toenhanceandimplementourcapabilitiesanywhere, anytimeat a moment’snotice.”

MobilityAirmenareexpectedto challengethestatus quoandexpandwhatitmeanstobeready, integrated,and agileagainstpotentialadversaryactionpriortoMG23execution. MG23isdesigned todemonstratethecommand’s high-valuecredibility, dependability, andindispensablenaturetothejointforce, partnernations, andglobal operationsatlarge.
DuringtheOctober 2022 Airlift/TankerAssociationSymposium, Minihanassertedthejointforce isnotasready, asintegrated,andas agileas theythink.MobilityAirmen havetoputintheworkforMG23tobeaprovingground thatdemonstrateshowmobilityisthelynchpintosuccess inthe Pacific.
HethencalledthousandsofAirmentoattentionand gavehisdirectiontoMAFAirmentosetthetempoand tonetowardMG23.
“Don’tholdback;moveforward,” Minihansaid. “Allof this[planning]ismeaninglessifyoudon’tback it upwith action–Let’s Go!”
JointBaseCharleston wasoneofthefirstbasestomove onMinihan’sorders. In January, thebaseconductedthe largest-everC-17GlobemasterIIIlaunchfromasinglebase, demonstratingthe abilitytorapidlygenerateandproject overwhelmingairpoweralongsideArmyandjointpartners.
In February, FairchildAir ForceBasecoordinatedwith membersfromtheRoyalAustralianAir ForceandDarwin InternationalAirport Fire&Rescuepersonneltoconduct thefirst-ever KC-135Stratotankerhot-pitrefuelinginAustralia.
OtherexamplesofsurpassingpreviouslyknownMAF limitsincludesarecord-breaking, 16,000-mileendurance missionandKC-46A limitedcrewoperations. Thesedemonstrationscreatedecisionspaceandadvantagethatincreasessurvivability and generatescombat power.
“Lettheculture thatalreadyexistsintheregioncontinue to thrive, whichpursuespeace,” Reedsaid.“That’s whatwe’reafter.”
The focusedtenacityofthecommandpreparingfor MG23willensuremobilityAirmenarereadyforanyscenario.
Thefinalplanningconferencelaterthisspringwilllayer thelastoperationaldetailsneededtodeliverthelargest mobilityexercise inthe command’shistory.

“Whentheydraftedme, that wasmyfirstexperiencewithsegregation,” Harveysaid. “But I’mnotaquitter.”
Harveyexplained,alongwithhisfellow TuskegeeAirmen,hewent ontofightin the Korean WarandtowintheAir Force’sinaugural Top Gunaerial gunnerycompetitionin1949,althoughtheirwinwouldnot berecognizedfor decades.
“Afterwe wonthe[TopGun]meet,wehadto clearout,” Harveysaid. “Wefinallygot ourrecognitionin Januaryof2022. Eachoneofus wantedtobethebest. Whenyouputallthosebeststogether, youhavequite ateam.”
Both aviators’careersaremarkedbytheircommitmenttoservice and adrive toperformunder pressure.
“Personallyandprofessionally, Iplay towin,” Brownsaid.“Ithrive underpressure, and that’swhen I’m atmybest.”
BrownsaidheoftenthinksabouttheexperiencesoftheTuskegee Airmen andwhatthey wentthroughto serve.
“When you lookat theTuskegeeAirmen,theybelievedthey coulddo it,” Brownsaid “Theyachievedit.Theyopeneddoorsandopportunities forso many, toincludemyself.”
Onthesecond dayof ‘Accelerating theLegacy2023,’Airmengathered for various professionaldevelopmentseminarsoncareerdevelopment, diversityandinclusion,andthefutureoftheforce. Commanders, command chiefs, andfirstsergeantssatonmentorshippanelstoanswer questionsonarangeoftopics.
