TheAirmenofthe24thSpecialOperations Wi ng, Detachment1,alsoknownasDeploymentCellor“D-Cell ,” havebeendoingjustthisformorethan60years.
Theunit,basedoutofMacDillAir ForceBase, Florida, consistsof54membersacross15careerfields, forming fouragileteams. Theseteamsofmulti-capableAirmenare trainedin49cross-functionaltasksincludingsurvival,evasion, resistanceandescapetraining, advancedshootingand advancedcombatcasualtycare.

Overtheweek,D-Cellworkedontroopmovementinextremecoldanddeepsnow, tentconstruction,andnightoperation s, allofwhichculminatedinasimulatedcombat scenario.
TheAirmenalsospenttwodaysworkingwiththeAlaska NationalGuard’s 2ndBattalion,211th AviationRegiment. Oneday wa sspentina cl assroomwiththeregiment’s medevacunit,wheretheylearnedcold-weather-specific tacticalcombatcasualtycare. The aviatorsalsosupported thetraining’sfinalcombatscenario, providingmedevacsto thesimulatedcombatcasualties.
“We’vedonemedicaltraining, [tacticalcombatcasualty care]andthingsofthatnature, nowwe’regetting knowledgefrom the Soldiersuphere, whodothingsinthemountainsandArcticenvironment ,” said We bb. “Pullingthat knowledgeofhow yo utreathypothermia,howyoutreat frostbite, versuswhatwedealtwiththepast20yearsin a different [areaofresponsibility].”
“It wasn’tevennecessarilytheArcticcoldweathertraining, butit wasthequestions, theback-and-forthofit,” he continued. “Youcan read abookonitalldaylong, butif you’retalkingtotheauthor, you’llgetthoselittledetails It’sgoodtohavethatinsight.”
Afterthetrainingwrappedup, theteampreparedto leavethesub-zerotemperaturesofAlaskaandreturnto the warmbeachesofFlorida–bringingbackanewsetof skillsandvalidatedcapabilities.

TheassistancepackagealsohelpsaddressUkraine’s needfor armorandcombatvehicles, thesecretarysaid.“We’reproviding59more Bradleys, 90Strykers, 53[mine-resistant,ambushprotectedvehicles] and350Humvees,” hesaid. The packagealsorestocksUkraine’s need forartillery andammunition.
“TheUnited Statesremainsdeterminedtolead—andtodoour part tohelpUkrainedefenditself,” hesaid.
And so it is with democracies around the world. Austin said the unitydemonstratedbythe50countriesthathave steppeduptoaid Ukrainedemonstratestheresolvetodefendsmallnationsfromthe aggressions of the largenations, basing that defenseontheinternationalrules-basedorder thathasserved the globesowell.

“Weneedtokeepupourmomentumandresolve,” thesecretarysaid. “Weneedtodigevendeeper. ThisisadecisivemomentforUkraine andadecisivedecadefortheworld.Somakenomistake: We will supportUkraine’sself-defensefor aslong as ittakes.”
It isaworldwideeffortandAustinnoted Poland’s effortsin“providingarmoredvehicles, intrainingUkrainianforcesandinproviding shelterforUkrainianrefugees. “Our Germanhostshaveannounced thatthey willalso providea Patriotair-defensesystemforUkraine, complementingourown Patriotcontribution. GermanywillalsodonateMarderInfantry Fighting VehiclesforUkraine,” hesaid.“Last week,Canadaannouncedthatit wouldprovideaNASAMSair-defense systemtoUkraine. Theapp, originallylaunchedin June2020,becameavaluablerecruitingtoolduringtheearlydaysoftheCOVID-19pandemichelpingrecruitersconnectwithpotentialapplicantsinavirtualenvironment.Butwith continualimprovements, now theapp has afeaturethat will helpallAirmen,oranyoftheapp’smorethan270,000users, tobecomearecruiterof sortsfortheAir Force, Air NationalGuard andAir Force Reserve.
“Thenewfeatureallows anyonewhohastheapptoplayanimportant roleinfillingtheuniformedvacanciesinourforce,” saidCapt.Michael Bambarger, theAimHighappfunctionalmanager. “Nolongerdoes amilitarymemberapproachedinpublichavetorefersomeonetothelocal recruiting office, orafriendorfamilymemberhavetoconvincesomeone theyknowwho’sinterestedinjoiningthemilitarytoseekoutarecruiter.”

The day-longcourseprovidedhands-ontraining, such astheproperuseofplacingatourniquetkitonthemselves oranotherinjuredindividual, checking forsignsoflifeand packing wounds using highly realistictraining aids.
Membersofthe927thAerospaceMedicineSquadron conductedmorein-depthtrainingincludingcareinasimulated combatenvironment.
“Thistrainingisagreatrefresherforallofus, especiallyforthosewhoaredeploying,” saidAirman First ClassSalvadorCamacho, amedicallogisticsspecialistassignedtothe 927thAMDS. “Creatingthemusclememory intheselife-savingtechniquesensuresthatweareready to use ourskillswithouthesitation.”

“TheI1B1weusecouldn’tstandandwedidn’thaveantennasthat wecouldstandup,either,”said U.S.AirForceTech.Sgt.Phillip Wise,6thCESEODteamleader.“SowereachedouttoBoltCell,and theygotushookedupwith[USF].”
WiseexplainedthattheI1B1backpackemitsanelectromagnetic sig-naltocounterradio-controlledIEDs,preventingthemfrom communi-catingtotransmittersandthatitusesasetofdualradio antennastoemitthesignal.
AnEODspecialistneedstotakethebackpackoffwhileaddressing a suspiciouspackageto avoidconnectivityrisks, buttheantennasneed tostandverticallytotransmitthesignal.Thisposedaproblem,sothe unitcontacted Johnston.
JohnstonconnectedEODtoathree-manteamfromUSFtodevelop aportableattachmenttothebagthey callthe VerticalStabilization Systemallowingittobetakenoffandstooduprightwhileasuspicious packageisbeingworked on.
TheteamhasbeenworkingwithEODonasolutionsinceAugust, andtheirproductcouldimpactservicemembersthroughout theDoD.
ThispartnershipisoneofmanythattheBoltCell wantstoestablish to developinnovation. Johnstonstressed thatthe BoltCell willdrop what they’re doing for an Airman that comes to their office looking for a solutiontotheirunit’s problems.
