Jim Moray Fresh 24 Sun 20 June 7.30pm TICKETS: £12 (18+) Hailed at the age of 21 as ‘the greatest leap forward in folk for 30 years’, King’s School educated Jim Moray was nominated three times in last year’s Radio 2 Folk Awards. Moray, who says his skill is selecting ‘bits of the past and re-imagining them for the future’, comes ‘back to Macc’ as part of a tour to promote his fourth album. Plus support from local legend C. J. Beard, formerly of The Purple Gang. Save Us features ten acclaimed artists with a connection to Macclesfield, including Turner Prize nominee Ian Davenport, David Shrigley (best known for his ironic line drawings) and winner of the 2009 Jerwood Drawing Prize, Mit Senoj. There’s new video work by Ian Rawlinson and Nick Crowe, site-specific pieces by Jen Southern and Hilary Jack, as well as Andrea Booker’s reclaimed signage and work by Ben Cook, Daniel Staincliffe and Ralph McGaul. This tiny park with extensive views is transformed into a sculpture garden for the weekend. Admire the weird, wonderful and inventive works created for Saturday morning’s Barnaby Parade, ‘Made in Macc’.
Tucked away in this hidden C17th Chapel is textile art by Stephanie Ramage, including fabric boxes, dolls and wall hangings; work by Macclesfield’s Mulberry Stitchers; and images by artist Yvonne Phillips, capturing her emotional response to landscape. Donations to this listed building welcome.
FriiSpray St Michael and All Angels Church 9 Sat 19 June 10am–6pm; Sun 20 June 1pm–5.30pm FREE EVENT Developed by Maxonian, Stuart Childs, FriiSpray uses an infra-red spray can and Wii technology to draw ‘in the air’. It’s a creative, hands-on experience for any age, so create your own virtual graffiti with this interactive installation.
Every entry to the ‘New View’ photography competition is on show, forming an eyecatching street exhibition for the entire weekend. Estate agents give up their shop windows on picturesque Church Street, and the four winning photographs appear in G Fine Art.
A Beating Retreat Market Place 8 Sat 19 June 6.30pm–7.10pm FREE EVENT The Band of the 103rd Lancashire Artillery Volunteers, one of the North West’s leading Territorial Army bands, performs the centuries-old military ceremony of ‘Beating Retreat’ based on the return of off-duty soldiers to their barracks, after much drinking at local inns.
Emerging artists Ralph McGaul, Melanie Alexandrou and Patrick Cody open their studios to show large-scale paintings, intricate etchings, bold woodcuts, sculptures and more. All welcome, and there’s tea and cake too!

Graffiti Wall Market Place 8 Sun 20 June 10.30am–4.30pm FREE EVENT Infamous graffiti artist, David Watts, comes ‘back to Macc’ for Barnaby. The renowned street artist has transformed buildings with murals, worked with dozens of schools, and recently sprayed his tag for the Jedward video. Watch while he creates a huge piece of street art in Market Place.
The Biggest Cardigan St Michael and All Angels Church 9 Sat 19 June 10am–6pm; Sun 20 June 1pm–5.30pm FREE EVENT Dramatically displayed inside St Michael’s is possibly the biggest, but surely the most splendid cardigan in the world! Created by artist Jean Westbrook (seen last summer on the 4th plinth in Trafalgar Square) and the knitting needles of hundreds of contributors. Also, footage of the process of making the colossal cardy. But is it a record-breaker?
Found Space present ‘Stowage’ Shackleton & Sons 11 Shop window Over 20 emerging and established artists from across the country have been invited to use vintage sweet jars for their art. The results make up ‘Stowage’: a touring exhibition, installed in this disused shop, including work by Chris Knight, Janet Griffiths, Jill Randall, Kwong Lee, Ben Cook and Hilary Jack.
Humour, music and weirdness in roughly equal measure: London’s highly unconventional cabaret team Pierette S’Cobaz, Go Diddley & DJ Ratsmilk, Boothby Graffoe and Martin Soan, plus local ‘One Minute Wonders’ and guest, poet, Jo Bell. Ssshh, don’t tell anyone but you can even watch the footie and get to this too! The bar will also be open.

FAMILY & CHILDREN Barnaby Parade: Made in Macc Starts and finishes at Christ Church (see map for details of route) Sat 19 June 11am–12pm FREE EVENT Line the route, wave a flag and cheer on the many hundreds taking part in the inaugural Barnaby Festival Parade. Bands, dancers, street entertainers and community groups celebrate the town and its rich history, passing many of its historic landmarks. The Parade ends at Christ Church as the Barnaby Fête begins. Learn juggling or circus skills, join the hat-making workshop and show off your creation at the Mad Hatter’s tea party. Can you reach the tea pot piñata? Comedy and tragedy (it is an opera!) alternate in this new work by Macclesfield conductor Nicholas Smith. Professional and community singers, accompanied by the Silk Opera Ensemble, portray a 1930s courting ritual known as the Monkey Run, which used to take place on Mill Street. The neighbours’ curtains twitch as rich mill owner’s son, Harry, egged on by his mates, seduces Maggie, a pretty mill worker.

There has been a Barnaby Fair since the 13th century, when Macclesfield was granted a Borough Charter. Since then, the annual celebration has changed in line with the town’s own fortunes – from festivals and fairs, parades, circuses and carnivals, to mill and school shut-downs and seaside excursions.
