Easter is Over, Summer Beckons Well, April has been incredible busy for me - we had barely recovered from the shock of losing our newly upgraded server (for reasons we are still exploring) when we had to dash to London for the London Book Fair. I am delighted to say that it went incredibly well. As the biggest ‘New Book’ Trade fair in the UK, the London Fair was unbelievably large and busy. It was the last time that the Fair was held at Earls Court, next Spring it returns to its old haunt at Olympia. There was a healthy representation from Spanish publishers, so we were very proud to have books from our mix of Spanish, US and UK based authors on display, with many more in the offing over the next twelve months. We were very pleased that we had books from so many Jávea based authors to show the UK industry and we had interest in placing several of our titles on Kobo and on the Waterstones’ e-book list, so I think we did Jávea proud. You can see our catalogue here Needless to say I was exhausted when we got back and fell ill - hence the delay in this month’s magazine thank you all the well wishers who offered their help and support and for everyone’s patience. I have to say, it is good to be back at the computer and it is wonderful to be getting better in the sunshine and warmth of Jávea, with fresh produce and a good wine to sip, who could want more? April has seen improved roundabouts, the new one at Saladar along with the completion of several roadworks that were slowing traffic generally so it was a relief to see the Town looking so busy at Easter - can’t wait for the next influx of visitors, colour and smiles.

Dear Grapevine Friends, In March Xà bia’s Councillor for Tourism, Antonio Miragall and myself, travelled to Brussels for meetings with a group of MEPs, to express our concern at the planned oil exploration project in the Mediterranean Sea, just over 20 kilometers from the coast of our town.

The Grapevine Issue 169 2014| 5 |

In Brussels we met Andrés Perelló the PSOE MEP who arranged our meetings with Nigel Smith, Head of the marine division of the EU Environmental Commission and Jo Lienen, the German MEP responsible for Oil Exploration and Fracking issues, and Linda McAvan the British coordinator of the EU Parliamentary Commission for the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety.

The concerns of Xàbia’s Fishermen’s Association and the petitions of our citizens were also transmitted to the European Parliament. Jo Lienen has promised to personally follow up the issues we have raised, by visiting Xàbia after the European elections, we will make every effort to defend our beautiful coastline. Thanks to careful municipal management; we closed the accounts for the 2013 fiscal year with a positive balance amounting to €4,285,145. The higher income arose from the collection of IBI for properties not previously taxed (€1.8 million), plusvalía taxes on property sales (€1.6 million - €600,000 more than forecast), building licenses and fees (€450,000, 64% more than last year), habitation certificates (€98,000, 46% more than expected), bonuses from recycling companies (€150,000 more than 2013) and also by an increase in the contribution from the State, which rose by €344,000 compared to 2012, mainly due to an increase in Xàbia’s population. The adopting of urbanizations and the issuing of habitation certificates has undoubtedly revived housing transactions which are back to 2007 levels.

6 | The Grapevine Issue 169 2014

The Central Government has issued a ministerial decree that regulates the use of budget surpluses, allowing only “financially sustainable “investments and only for those Town Halls who pay their suppliers within at least 60 days, which is currently the case in Xàbia. We are working on a number of projects that meet all the requirements set by the government. In March I held an open meeting in the Parador with around 150 of Xàbia’s European residents to explain my job as an MP in the Alicante Provincial Government.

The Grapevine Issue 169 2014| 7 |

At the meeting, I clarified the function of the Provincial Government and my responsibilities as an MP, and my membership in a number of the Provincial Government’s agencies such as the Costa Blanca Tourist Board and the MARQ Archaeological Museum. I provided a list of all the grants and subsidies received by the municipality which are helping to improve our town, as at the end of February we had committed subsidies amounting to ₏487,000 for 2014.

8 | The Grapevine Issue 169 2014

I hope that the event helped familiarise our residents with the Spanish administrative system and the responsibilities of each administration. Through this second meeting, organized through my English Facebook page and Blog I have again tried to inform, involve and engage Xàbia’s foreign residents (who represent more than 50% of the local population) in our municipal life. Thank you to everyone who attended the meeting. This month I travelled to Madrid to participate in the Commission for Urban Development and Housing of the FEMP (Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces). One of the key objectives of FEMP is to contribute to the modernization of local government and improving the quality of services provided to their citizens. Valencia’s Department of Infrastructure has made a new plan with a budget of 8 million euros to carry out improvements to Xàbia’s port area, and to maximize the existing facilities.

The Grapevine Issue 169 2014| 9 |

Historically all previous proposals by the Department of Infrastructure in relation to Xàbia Port proposed a massive expansion which was firmly rejected both by local politicians and public pressure. Now the Government is only referring to the body of water that lies between the two piers. According to the document which will be available for public viewing the project relates to the ramp, the crane, public moorings and the existing moorings at the Levante jetty. Xàbia Town Hall will be evaluating the proposals and will involve local interested parties such as the fishermen.

from XD

During the last year we have implemented a concept of economic management based on expenditure restraint, pay suppliers within 60 days and generate extra incomes. The result has been a surplus of 4.3 million euros and significantly increased local Goodwill that has regained 2007 levels, this is definitely the result of having generated a climate of legal security and a good environment to invest in Jåvea. INES, female, Shelter since 08.05.2013 Crossbreed, DOB 15.01.2013 – young dog Ines and her seven siblings were found when searching for food in a big container. It seems that their mother had left them alone probably because she could not take care of all of them anymore. She is a fine girl, who is used to getting attention from people and she is ready for adoption.

Pobrito, male, Shelter since 22.12.2008 Podenco, DOB approx. November 2007 - 56 cm Pobrito was found by on the street by an animal friend and brought to the safer parking of a supermarket until we could pick him up. This nice podenco is very shy, but as soon as he realizes that nobody does him any harm, he turns out to be very amicable and trusting. He walks well on the lead and he is housetrained and likes other dogs.

ROC, male, Shelter since 14.09.2013

The Grapevine Issue 169 2014| 15 |

Doberman, DOB 10.07.2012 – 69 cm Roc is another special case here in our shelter. He came to APASA, because his owner was not able to take care of him anymore. Roc is a bit wild as he has never undergone a regular training which is very important for this breed. Roc is not aggressive and female dogs are his best friends but he needs agitation, a lot of space, long walks and education starting from the basics. He needs a strong and determined hand, someone who wants to keep him forever. He must come to trust a person completely and then he will become a good dog in a home with loving people.

TESA, female, Shelter since 13.12.2014 Crossbreed, DOB 04.04.2012 – 50 cm Tesa is a very nice looking but a little problematic female that comes from an owner. She will need some special training, because she does not like to be left alone and she has a tendency to escape. But with much attention and the right education she will surely become the perfect family dog. As she does not have problems with other dogs, it would probably do her good to have a dog friend living in the same household.

16 | The Grapevine Issue 169 2014

FLIP, male, Shelter since 30.08.2012 Crossbreed, DOB 15.08.2012 – 42 cm When Flip was brought to the shelter we had a feeling that he is only just another “macho”. But we were wrong. He is a nice and friendly boy who likes all other dogs regardless whether they are male or female. With his playful nature he can get along with all of them. At the beginning he was a bit afraid of people but now he likes them as well. He walks well on the lead and a new owner will get a good friend for life. TIALA, female, Shelter since 29.08.2011 Alsatian Mix, DOB 15.08.2009 – 56 cm What a pretty dog Tiala is. She has the elegance of a podenco the sturdy look and the colours of a Hyena and the character of a cat. She is very loving and active and likes to walk for hours on the lead. At home you should have a kennel or a fenced area, as she will jump out of any garden to check out your neighbours´ dogs. We guess that she needs a home in the country with lots of land and freedom, as she is born to run.

The Grapevine Issue 169 2014| 17 |

PONITA, female, Shelter since 15.02.2009 Podenco DOB 15.02.2008 - 53cm Ponita was found on the street. The woman who found her has already 4 dogs and so she had to bring her to us. She is a classical Podenca. At the beginning very shy but as soon as she gets acquainted with somebody, she will melt like snow in the sun. She likes to play and sometimes very lively, her new owners should therefore have space for her jaunts. She likes other dogs, walks well on the lead and she is house trained.

TOBY, male, Shelter since 14.09.2012 Labrador Mix, DOB 01.03.2010 – 69 cm Toby comes from an owner who could no longer keep him, since he had grown too big. He is really a big and powerful boy which is not easy to handle. But he needs a new chance as he is basically a good dog that only needs a proper training and treatment. He is very active, walks perfectly on the lead and likes car rides. Give him love an attention and he will highly reward you. Apasa was founded 15 yrs ago by a group of Spanish, English and Germans. It started from humble beginnings: a few concrete kennels and no fencing, but over the years it has grown so much and we now have upwards of 200 dogs, we also have quarantine kennels for when new or sick dogs are bought in. We work with the town hall and the police in collecting dogs that have been lost or abandoned. We need the support of our members and all the fundraising events to keep us going. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.

Institutional statement against oil exploration in the Mediterranean coast Faced with the threat of seismic surveys in order to find oil deposits off the coast of Valencia, the Network of Mayors of the region of Marina Alta urges the Ministry of Industry, Government of Spain for an immediate cessation of project as the surveys proposed are contrary to the productive structure in the region and do not confer any form of economic and social benefit to its inhabitants, for the extraction of hydrocarbons will not result in more jobs and more wealth . We believe also that the industrial exploitation of marine resources underground is a clear threat to the economy and productive structure of the region of Marina Alta, as it involves a certain risk to vital sectors of the local economy such as tourism, fisheries and gastronomy. Surveys, by themselves, represent a geological disturbance unforeseeable consequences that will affect marine ecosystems of high value, which will impact on the environmental, economic and social situation of our environment. There is also an emphatic social, business and institutional rejection of this project, so the Network d’ Mayors of the Marina Alta Ministry of Industry requires the immediate cessation of authorised oil prospecting.

The Dolly Mixtures Support Cruz Roja Last Month saw the Dolly Mixtures holding an auction and raising yet another generous donation to the 2014 Festival, organised by the Freemasons of Valencia, to help raise funds for Cruz Roja. Over the last three years the Dolly Mixtures have organised a number of auctions and raffles in support of the 2014 Festival and to date the Festival has purchased an Ambulance and a Homeless Support Vehicle. The Freemasons of Valencia have planned for the 2014 Festival to run for 3 years and they hope that sufficient funds to purchase a second Homeless Support Vehicle will be raised before the Festival comes to an end on the 31st May 2014. The Dolly Mixtures are a Ladies Club that meets on a Friday afternoon at The Club in Quesada where they enjoy quizzes, demonstrations, fashion shows, lunches out and day trips to mention just a few things. They are a friendly group and if you think you would like to join them, please go along any Friday afternoon at 2.30pm.

WORLD BOOK DAY

Every year, the Public Library of Javea celebrates the International Day of the Book with the opening of a book crossing point where over a few days some 500 books in different languages are “liberated. This year the bar was installed within the Mercat Municipal, although volunteers were also able to leave more books on benches, fountains and other public areas. The opening was attended by the mayor of culture, Empar Bolufer and the director of the library and several volunteers from the international section of the library . The bookcrossing is an international movement that seeks to promote reading through the practice of reading and then put the book in any public area to share from hand to hand. Also during celebrations of World Book Day, in the afternoon a poetry reading was held with a storyteller for children in the Biblioteca de Duanes.

WHY USE A CURRENCY EXCHANGE BROKER? Currency exchange brokers act as a substitute to the traditional methods of transferring funds overseas. They provide both corporate and private clients with far better rates of exchange than what banks offer and have specific expertise in the area. Currency exchange brokers, like Infinity International, also provide free transfers which again is an advantage against a high street bank. Beat the bank’s rate by up to 4%! Currency exchange brokers deal directly with the currency markets which means they can offer highly competitive exchange rates on all major currencies, often beating the bank’s rate by over 3%. With in-depth knowledge of what drives foreign exchange markets, they can help you optimise the timing of your transaction so that you achieve the best possible exchange rate. Opening a trading account is quick, simple, completely free, and there is no obligation to deal. How do foreign exchange brokers make their money if their rates are so good? They buy their currency at a wholesale price and then sell it at a retail price, you will find in the vast majority of instances the retail price with a foreign exchange broker is far less than that of your bank. There are many reasons for using a currency exchange broker, including making an overseas property purchase, paying a supplier for goods, receiving a pension, sending money to a family member. How do I know that my money is safe? It is to check that the currency exchange broker has proper financial regulation, which encompasses the segregated accounts which holds the clients’ money. All details, including who are the regulatory authority, and the broker’s registration numbers, should be easily found on the company’s website. Can I compare different companies? Some companies will not give you an example until you are a signed up client. Glenn at Infinity International Ltd will tell you how much currency you will receive for a given amount of funds against the prevailing wholesale price.

PADRÓN FAQs WHAT IS ‘’THE PADRÓN’’?

WHAT

‘’The Padrón’’ is a list of everyone who lives in a town, or spends the majority of the year there. Your details are proof of residence in the town. By law everyone living in Spain is obliged to register in the municipality where they reside, or spend the majority of the year.

It is a document which confirms how long you have spent in Spain, regardless of your nationality or legal status, i.e. regardless of whether you are legally registered as resident, or whether you are waiting to be registered. Registration on the ‘padrón’ confirms you as a resident of the town.

I’M NOT A LEGAL RESIDENT – CAN I REGISTER ON THE PADRÓN?

You will need to be registered for:

Even if you are in an ‘irregular’ situation you shouldn’t be afraid to register. The Town Council has no control over the legality or illegality of the people residing here. It is just a list of who is living in the town. I OWN A PROPERTY IN SPAIN BUT I DON’T LIVE HERE ALL YEAR – DO I NEED TO REGISTER? If you spend more than half the year in your holiday home – so 183 or more days/ six months a year – then yes, you need to register on the padrón. I LIVE IN SPAIN BUT I RENT MY HOME – DO I NEED TO REGISTER? Yes. It doesn’t matter if you rent your home. If you live here, you need to register on the padrón. DO MY CHILDREN NEED TO REGISTER? Yes, everyone living at the property needs to register. WHAT DOES IT COST? Registering on the padrón is free in most offices. There is usually a small charge for a copy of the certificate.

IS

‘’THE

PADRÓN’’

FOR?

Registering as resident; Applying for a health card; Exchanging your driving license; Access to social services support; Registering your children in school; Accessing certain discounts for pensioners. Also, the town receives funds from central government for every person living there & registered on the padrón. It is estimated that in Jávea, if everyone who should be registered on the padrón, was, the town would receive an extra 2 million euros a year. These funds are used for various town services such as the local police, fire fighters, correos, and healthcare. WHERE DO I REGISTER? You register at the offices of the Town Hall/ Ayuntamiento. In Jávea the ‘padrón’ office is at the ‘Portal del Clot’ Avda. Amanacer, 2. DO I NEED AN APPOINTMENT You don’t need an appointment in Jávea & it’s unlikely that you would need one elsewhere. HOW DO I REGISTER? Take your passport or your national ID card & your escritura (property ownership papers) or rental contract.

52 | The Grapevine Issue 169 2014

It’s always a good idea to take photocopies too, as some offices won’t copy them for you. If you have an informal agreement for your address, for instance if you are staying with family or friends & don’t have a rental contract, the person you are staying with can sign a form to say that you are living at that address.

DO I HAVE TO RENEW THE PADRÓN? If you need a copy of the certificate then it must be less than 3 months old. You only need to have a current certificate if you need to show it for something official – you don’t have to go to ‘renew’ it unless your details change, if you are an EU citizen. Non-EU citizens have to renew every 2 years.

Periodically, the Town Hall may contact individuals to ask them to confirm that the details held are correct. Many Town Halls, especially those with a high percentage of foreign residents, will do this as a matter of course & on a regular basis. This is simply because foreign residents are often unaware of the requirements to ‘de-register’ when they leave or to keep their information up to date. It is your responsibility to inform the Town Hall of any changes so that records can be kept up to date. Therefore, if you have a baby, marry, divorce, move house, someone dies, or if you leave the country, or any other obvious change occurs, you must inform the Town Hall. If you are moving within Spain, when you register on the padrón in the new municipality, that office will inform the previous one & you will be automatically removed from the padrón at your previous address.

FALSE FRIENDS

I’ve been meaning to write about this for ages! Then a few days ago a friend posted the following image on Facebook & I decided that now was the time to get around to it.

So, what’s a ‘false friend’? Basically it’s a word which sounds like a word in another language, which has a completely different meaning! Sometimes the results can be funny – sometimes downright embarrassing! Imagine that you are Spanish & you’re in London – you have a bit of a head cold – you’re a bit constipado ( congested) You walk into the chemist & say that you’re suffering from constipación & you’re sold a packet of ExLax! Maybe asking for a box of tissues would have been better.

Of course, éxito doesn’t mean exit – it means ‘success’ – & sadly this sign which says in Spanish ‘success here’, really is a bit of a disaster! I suppose from an advertising point of view it got people talking about Starbucks though……..

54 | The Grapevine Issue 169 2014

I remember years ago before we moved here, I was shopping with my friend and I spoke very little Spanish, she spoke none at all. We were looking for a dress for her & she was trying a few on. The shop assistant came and said something to us – the only word I caught was preguntas. That has to mean ‘pregnant’ right? I said ‘Sí cuatro meses’ . The assistant walked off & we thought ‘how rude’. Years later when I started learning Spanish properly I remembered the occasion with great vergüenza (embarrassment). Preguntas means ‘questions’ - & although my friend was embarazada at the time – by 4 months – she wasn’t at all embarrassed about it .

A teenager I used to teach English to once told me that she had set the timer at home to ‘grab’ a TV programme. After thinking about it I realised that she was using grabar (to record) & making it sound English. I said that she was going to ‘record’ it. But recordar means ‘to remember’ & she hadn’t forgotten to do it... & round & round we went! Another time a Spanish student who was staying with us asked to have ‘jam, egg & chips’ for dinner. I have to admit that had me stumped for a while – until I had a light bulb moment & realised that she meant ham – jamón.

Of course there are many more examples – largo doesn’t mean ‘large’ – it means long, & ropa isn’t ‘rope’, it’s ‘clothes’. So it might be a bit confusing if you asked for ‘large rope’ when you really wanted ropa larga.

I once took a frantic phone call from a mother – her son had been suspended from school for the continued molestación of a teacher. She was horrified – ‘’I know he’s no angel but he’d never do anything like that!!’’ she said. I explained that all he’d done was annoy the teacher… not what she’d been thinking at all!

And then a ‘relative’ is a pariente , & your ‘parents’ are your padres. But of course padre means ‘father’ So why are we saying that we have more than one?? One to watch is ‘preservative’ – a preservativo is a condom, & although it’s sensible to use one, ‘sensible’ in English, when said in Spanish sensible, means ‘sensitive’. A quick google will give you lots more – it can be fun thinking of ‘wrong’ ways to use them – but more than that it could keep you out of hot water – agua caliente. And caliente is another one to be careful about. But more of that another time! Lynn Cobb

Javea Residents Asked to Help With Ambulance Appeal !

The Red Cross needs the help of the community to raise the money for a much-needed ambulance. The Red Cross Organisation is free to everybody and helps anyone regardless of race, creed, colour or financial situation - they are there for you in a crisis but they now need YOUR urgent help to maintain these vital services to a high standard. They need to have 4 ambulances for the Javea community and surrounding areas to provide this service and operate 24 hours a day 365 days per year but unfortunately three of their ambulances are past their best and must be retired this year. This will leave them exposed with only one ambulance to service the community. This will affect all of us in Javea and therefore we are asking everyone to help. There are many private ambulance organisations (require a yearly subscription) and this may make some Javea residents feel that their needs are provided for. However the reality is that if they fall ill in a restaurant or collapse on the street then it´s highly likely that it will be the Red Cross who will attend and not their private ambulance. According to the latest statistics, there are 37,000 on the Padron of Javea. If each person gave 2€ Javea would have a new ambulance but nothing is that simple! Ambulancia Para Javea is a new idea by a Javea Resident Sandy Tsalikidis who hopes that the Javea community will all help to try and raise the money. She is asking for fund raising events to be held throughout the year with a possible special Ambulance Awareness Week. The idea is for a “Wear Red” campaign and community based projects being held locally and it would be great if businesses, restaurants, schools, clubs and residents did at least one thing to raise money for the appeal and for Javea residents to give something back to their community and help to fund a new ambulance at a cost of 64,000€ Together we can make a difference! Anyone who would like to help support this worthy cause can contact Sandy on 626 681 720 or email ambulanciaparajavea@live.com or Facebook Ambulancia Javea.

Cybercrime in Spain 95% of crimes related to new technologies - called cybercrime - go unpunished, according to a study on this type of offense to be made public soon for the first time by the Spanish Ministry of Interior. “This phenomenon of cybercrime has great national and international importance, not only because of the threat posed to citizens, but also the danger to the economy and critical infrastructure,” according to the report in El Pais. Over the past year, the police, the Guardia Civil, the Navarra Regional Police and local police received 42,437 complaints of sexual offenses, fraud, fraud, forgery, threats, unlawful interception of communications and other modalities. Only 2,167 of these events were dealt with (5.1% of those known to the security forces of the State). That is “still very low percentage” compared with police successes regarding criminal offenses investigated that year (37%) or the successful prosecutions relating to robberies and assaults (23.9%), according to the study supports .

The speed, anonymity, comfort and ease of the new technologies make criminals exploit them for their activities, both “traditional” and more innovative. This means attacks on computer systems, data theft, tampering, identity theft, pedophile activities, shopping and banking phishing scams by, spreading viruses or trojans, etcetera. The global reach of these criminal activities has caused alarm across the world. Governments have implemented legislation to prevent and punish such conduct. This includes the Cybercrime Convention signed in Budapest (Hungary) in 2001, which Spain ratified October 1, 2010. The Budapest Convention aims to tackle crimes such as illegal access to computer systems; interception or interference with networks; production and the sale of devices and programs that intrude into a system; altering or deleting data; Internet fraud; production and distribution of child pornography and attacks on intellectual property and related rights. However, the study also warns the Ministry of Interior of other crimes not covered by the Budapest Convention, including honour crimes,

threats, coercion and drug trafficking. Two thirds of the 42,437 offenses reported to the Spanish police in 2013 correspond to computer fraud. Threats and coercion account for 20%; and the rest are “other” offenses. On December 5, 2013, the Mariano Rajoy approved the new National Cybersecurity Strategy “in order to respond to the enormous challenge of preserving cyberspace risks and threats.” The Ministry of Security and the Ministry of Telecommunications have signed a cooperation agreement to combat cybercrime. Both the police and the Guardia Civil have been strengthened during the last three years, more resources and more personnel, units dedicated to fighting crimes related to the Internet and new technologies. Last year investigations resulted in the arrest of 5,054 people for 2,167 offenses. This averages 2.33 people involved in each criminal act, “suggesting that the culprits do not act as individuals, but as part of organised groups.”

A summary of the recent UK Satellite TV changes

Our feature from Jon Worby With so many rumours and conflicting information about the satellite changes earlier this year, I thought a summary of the current UK satellite TV position would be of benefit. Essentially, reception of UK TV via satellite in the Javea and surrounding areas is better than it has ever been. Reception of the main UK TV channels like BBC, ITV, C4 and Five is vastly improved compared to what it has been for the last 10+ years. These channels can now be received on a satellite dish measuring at least 90x100cm instead of the 1.8m or 2.4m satellite dish that were previously been required. A 90x100cm satellite dish is the absolute minimum size of satellite dish required. This size satellite dish is right on the very limit of its performance and requires the dish to be aligned 100% correctly using a high performing LNB and a professional satellite meter to maximize the signals. There is little tolerance with dishes of this size for cloud, rain and “wind wobble” on the satellite dish. A larger 100x110cm or 125x135cm satellite dish is now the recommended size. If space and budget allow the 125x135cm satellite dish would be better, offering more stability in signal on those few days where the weather is not ideal. But even then there are occasions when even 2.4m satellite dishes can lose their signals in the heaviest of rain, so reception even then cannot be 100% guaranteed. The following channels can be received subscription free, on a Sky, Freesat or “off the shelf” receiver: BBC1,BBC2, BBC3, BBC4, CBBC, CBeebies, BBC News (including their HD versions), ITV1, ITV1HD, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, CITY, C4, C4HD, E4, More4, 4seven, Film4, Five, Five*, Five USA and about 100 other “free to air” channels. There are 11 subscription free HD channels available via satellite including BBC1HD, BBC2HD, ITV1HD and C4HD. Most of the Sky pay channels can also be received using a minimum of a 90x100cm satellite dish. But there are still some Sky channels, like the SD versions of Sky Sports 4, Sky Sports News, Eurosport 2 that may not be available 24/7 especially mid afternoon, even on the 2.4m satellite dishes. Hopefully when these channels move from their current “old” satellite to the third and final new UK TV satellite later this year, their reception should also improve.

The Grapevine Issue 169 2014| 59 |

Sky pay channels require a Sky digibox and a Sky viewing card and a monthly Sky subscription. If you are viewing Sky pay channels without a Sky viewing card and without a monthly Sky subscription you are doing so fraudulently and illegally. Another benefit of the satellite changes earlier this year is that you should no longer have to change the Sky digiboxes default transponder frequency from 11778 to another frequency when booting the sky box. In previous years, as 11778 used to be on a weak signal, you may have had to change the default transponder frequency from 11778 to another to help the Sky digibox download the channel list when it is first powered on. Now you no longer have to do this process as the main and correct default transponder frequency 11778 is now transmitted on a beam that is easier to receive than before, even on 90x100cm satellite dishes. or can even crash your entire browser. Apart from a toolbar/Browse Helper Object, some toolbars also add additional loading points (run key, service, appinit_ dlls..) which may cause an extra slowdown of your computer in general. Toolbars also take up extra space in your browser, leaving you with less content of the webpage you want to view.

Hi Everyone! Today we are going to talk about add-ons. You have probably read this word before while browsing the internet or while downloading or installing software. But… what are they? In essence, add-ons are small pieces of software that add new features or functionality to your browser. Add-ons can augment it with new features, foreign language dictionaries, or change its visual appearance. Through add-ons, you can customize browser to meet your needs and tastes. Sounds good! But unfortunately, as with everything else, add-ons have a gray area that some developers have used for not so helpful purposes. The so-called bad addons are even worse than we could initially think. In fact, a high percentage of add-ons installed on our computers behave similarly to malware. For example the additional tool bars for our browser. More and more software (mainly free software) bundle their software package with a toolbar since it’s an extra source of income. While in some cases, a toolbar *can* be necessary or useful, always ask yourself if you really need/want this toolbar. Additional Toolbars can slow down your browser since it takes longer to start them up, can interfere with certain webpages you want to view, can have compatibility issues with other toolbars/add-ons already installed

Summarising, these are some of the negative effects that these bad add-ons can produce on our computers when we install them, voluntarily or not: •

• • • •

They can change your homepage and your search engine without you realizing it Track your browsing activities and searches Display annoying ads and manipulate search results Take up a lot of space inside the browser Are difficult or even impossible for the average user to fully uninstall

So, not all toolbars are as harmless as they look. Do you want them to monitor your browser activities? What sites you visit? Collect other info from your computer? Do you want them to redirect searches? Change your start page? Display Advertisements (targeted Ads)? If the answer is No, then uninstall them or don’t install them in the first place. In most cases, legit software with a toolbar bundled, offers the user the option to uncheck the toolbar during install. Too bad most have these toolbars pre-checked already, so many users who install the software just click through the installation screens (next) in a hurry and end up with toolbars they don’t want or need.

The Grapevine Issue 169 2014| 61 |

And that’s still the biggest mistake users make.

Consumers are now receiving calls from scammers again.

That’s why it is always a good practice to read every part of the installation screens the software displays, so you don’t miss the option where you can uncheck the toolbar or other junk during install.

The scams (that started in 2008) are based on a combination of aggressive sales tactics, lies and half-truths. Callers identify themselves as computer support technicians, often from Microsoft itself but also from name-brand computer makers such as Dell or large security companies like Symantec or McAfee. The caller tries to fool victims into believing that their computer is infected, it has an faulty (or non-legal) operating system, often by having victims look at a standard Windows log that typically shows scores of harmless or low-level errors.

Also, it’s a good practice to always read the EULA/Privacy Policy when you want to install certain software. Unfortunately, not every software bundled with a toolbar/other junk offers this option to uncheck during install. This is bad practice and such software should be avoided in the first place. In case you have (accidentally) installed a toolbar you didn’t want/need in the first place, use the Windows’ built-in “Add/ Remove Programs” in the Control Panel (“Programs and Features” in Vista/Win7) and look if it’s listed there so you can uninstall it. Changing the subject... Recently I’ve received enquiries from some readers and also from clients regarding a phone call they have received from what is supposed to be the Microsoft tech support regarding issues on the version of Windows that is installed in their computers. Well, be aware because this is a well known scam that has been going on for years that seems to have migrated from the US and other European countries to Spain. A few years ago the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) heralded a major crackdown on fraudsters posing as Microsoft technical support personnel. It seems like this scam is starting again.

At that point, the sale pitch starts, with the caller trying to convince the consumer to download software or let the “technician” remotely access the PC. The con artists charge for their “help” and often get people to pay for worthless software. Frequently the software is not only useless, but also includes malicious Trojan horse malware that steals online account information and passwords. This kind of fraud goes back years, but became increasing common in 2010. It picked up so much steam in 2011 that Microsoft warned Windows users to be on guard. It seems like they have taken advantage of the finalisation of support that Microsoft provided for its former Operating System Windows XP that occurred on April the 8th, but this just means that Microsoft will no longer be issuing any security updates for this operating system and that they will no longer be installed automatically on your computers.

62 | The Grapevine Issue 169 2014

You were still be able to download and update patches up to this date, but if a new flaw in the operating system is discovered, it will go unpatched. Potentially, this means that hackers could target the new flaw, letting them infect a Windows XP machine. So if you’re one of the many Windows XP users out there, the big question is, what happens now support has stopped? There are plenty of articles warning of an incoming hacker storm, as cyber-criminals run riot through unpatched security holes in Windows XP, but how true is this scenario? Well, apart from the mentioned scam and other similar ones that might arise, consumers should be aware that this end-of support does not mean that their computers are insecure. As long as the existing security patches have been applied which, has to be done manually from that date onwards and obviously have their antivirus and firewall up to scratch. Microsoft’s security patches and updates for Windows XP will still be available after support officially ends. This means that even though it is after the 8th April 2014, you’ll still be able to use Windows Update to download all existing security patches. This is important, as if you re-install Windows XP, you should still apply all of the existing patches in order to make the base operating system as secure as it should be. So if you receive a call from Microsoft, you have to know that Microsoft do NOT make unsolicited phone calls about computer security or software fixes.

If you receive a call like this one, it’s a scam and all you need to do is hang up. Even though what they say sounds pretty convincing and that they are very persistent in their first contact, in most of the occasions the scammer will not bother you again and continue his search for someone that isn’t as careful as you are and who ends up falling in his trap. And for Mac users… well even though the amount of scam attempts is considerably lower, they are also been contacted demanding access to their computers via a remote-desktop tool just as Microsoft’s users, so please be aware too. Well, that is all for now. Please find our contact details on our advert opposite; in case you have any questions or queries, we can assure a quick and professional reply. The picture shows Michael Stephenson (centre) with (L to R) Christine BettertonJones, Ximo Bolufer, Milagros Uriate and Josep Castelló studying the plans. UNIQUE COLLECTION OF CASTLE PLANS DONATED TO MUSEU DE XÀBIA As mentioned in a recent issue, a unique collection of detailed site plans of over 50 castles in the Comarca has been donated to Xàbia’s Museum Soler Blasco by longtime British resident Michael Stephenson. The Amics del Museu (AMUX) arranged the donation and are currently putting together a team to prepare the material for exhibition. Joaquim Bolufer, municipal archaeologist and director of the Museum, is delighted by the donation. “Many of the plans are the most accurate in existence . They will provide material for a unique exhibition of interest, not only to Xàbia residents, but to people all over the Marina Alta and Baixa and El Comtat. The Museum is very grateful to Michael for his generous donation”. For many years Michael, together with friends Anne Scott and Ted Adams, visited the ruined castles in our region. “I was always curious about the number of castles I spotted from the road when I drove to Valencia. This combined with my love of walking provided the stimulus for the project,” says Michael. “My friends and I took photographs to indicate the topography and carefully measured the layout of the walls and other structures so we could prepare accurate scale drawings.”. Members of the AMUX have already volunteered to prepare the material for exhibition. These include local archaeologist Josep Castelló Marí and Christine BettertonJones, who has already uploaded some of the plans on to the AMUX blog together with articles by Michael published in the now defunct “Valencia Life” magazine http://amuxabia. weebly.com/castellscastilloscastles.html

Retired librarian Milagros Uriate has volunteered her expertise in cataloguing the material. She trained as a librarian at the Biblioteco Nacional and worked in the Biblioteca del Institute Geográfico Nacional and the Institute of Social Studies of the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. “I realised that my training and experience in cataloguing would be very

The Grapevine Issue 169 2014| 65 |

useful to the project”, commented Milagros, “and it would also be something that I would enjoy doing. I have just retired to Xàbia. It is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the history of our area.”

No professional experience is necessary. For example, apart from cataloguing, people will be needed to take new photographs, research background information, write and translate the exhibition texts.

The AMUX group has started work on sorting the 12 archive boxes of material that Michael Stephenson donated and would welcome more assistance.

Anyone interested in getting involved should email the AMUX at amuxabia@gmail.com

Out & About in and Around JĂĄvea

On the 4th May Javea celebrated the feast of St. Francis of Paula, one of the oldest festivals of the villa, which dates back to the mid-seventeenth century and has its linked to the present by the order of MĂnimos. This Order was built in what until recently was the Convent of the Augustinians they asked for permission to honor the saint. In recent years, this festival has taken hold and there are many believers who participate in the Mass and procession of the image of San Francisco de Paula in the downtown streets, accompanied by the music of the RomĂ ntica del Saladar. Javea Mayor Jose Chulvi, and several councilors also participated in the religious events organised.

Under the motto “In April, a thousand books” the Graüll School of Javea used different aspects to commemorate the day of the book, from creating a rap of the book, an exchange fair and the gift of a book to all students. They have encouraged young readers into a world of fantasy and adventure. On 29 and 30 April children enjoyed Enric Valor’s fables told by Jordi Carbonell in collaboration with the Bromera publisher.

Montgó forest fire highlights vulnerability of houses

Ever-more costly gasoline, gridlocked traffic, global warming and, above all, the need to save money are just a few of the harsh realities facing the Spanish automobile sector, which is going through its worst slump since 1986. Young people are no longer interested in owning a car, especially if they live in a large city. But that, of course, doesn’t mean they still don’t need to get around. One answer could be car sharing. BlaBlaCar is one of the most popular car-sharing sites in Europe. The company has grown three times faster in Spain than it has in the other 12 countries in which it operates. For full story see: El País in English

At the beginning of May, a forest fire in the Montgó Natural Park was started near Jesus Pobre (cause unknown, but being investigated). Some 40 hectares of forest were burned on the Col de Pous and Barranc de l‘Huera area. 50 people had to be evacuated from their homes, while helicopters and planes doused the fire from the air. Firefighting went on late into the night since embers were rekindled by gusts of wind and had to be smothered once again. Next morning aerial firefighting assets cooled and secured the perimeter of the fire. There had been fears that flames might spread over the Col de Pous onto the Denia side of the mountain, where there are many more houses. As things were, there were no hydrants to protect the houses on the south side of the mountain, the closest hydrant being at the Marriott hotel which had insufficient water pressure. From: Diarioinformación (Ed’s Note: An article in Las Provincias earlier this week noted that this April was one of the warmest on record, and that temperatures were some 5 degrees above average)

Public Meeting on Valencian Government’s Xàbia Port Project proposals Xàbia Town Hall will provide details of Valencia’s feasibility study for the construction and operation of a nautical/ sport facility in Xàbia Port at a public meeting on Wednesday May 7th at 8.00pm in the Casa de Cultura. The idea is to obtain the opinions of local groups and citizens over the coming week to incorporate them into a submission of comments to the Department of Infrastructure in Valencia. The deadline for the Town’s response is May 10th. From :XAD; Xàbia convoca.... Arenal’s Canal de la Fontana out to tender After years of delay, the Valencia Government has finally put the contract for the the construction and operation of the Canal de la Fontana out to tender. According to the Official Gazette, this project to privatise the management of the canal is valued at €5,008,017. The deadline for submitting tenders is two calendar months. The process will be open and will be awarded to the most advantageous proposal. Besides the investment of five million euros in the works, the company will have to pay an annual fee of €65,000 plus VAT to the regional government. The most worrying aspect is what will happen to the 350 members of the Aexamar association, who make up 85% of the current users of the canal, and which used to be involved in managing the channel. From Las Provincias...

Benidorm aims for a technology park In an attempt to solve a long standing dispute over land use with the regional government, Benidorm has proposed the construction of a technology park next to Terra Mítica. The park would cover some 100,000 square metres, create new business paths, some 5000 jobs in the medium term, as well as support specialist training and enable collaboration with universities. Development would be done with private capital, and the park managed by a public / private consortium. from Diarioinfrmación.. Full steam ahead for piped gas in Jávea Xàbia Town Hall has given a permit to the piped natural gas company Endesa to exploit the subsoil. This is the first step towards piped gas installation in the Old Town. Once this is completed the project will be extended to the Port and the Arenal. The company now has to submit a draft plan of works, and the council will insist that works do not take place during

the high summer and easter seasons, following the mess made by Endesa in the installtion of the gas main to Benitatxell along the Cami Vell de Teulada. From XAD:Endesa llevera... Farmers ask for measures against the effects of the current drought The Coordinator of Organizations of Farmers and Herders in the Valencia Region, COAG-CV, called on the Government to implement emergency measures to mitigate the negative effects of drought: Income tax reduction, granting soft loans to the affected farmers, improving the conditions for agricultural insurance and one-year extension of non- repayment of loans etc. As reported by the coordinator, the lack of rain is seriously damaging most crops and development of the trees themselves seriously endangering the survival of many farms. This has forced them to increase the frequency of watering, increasing production costs and lowering income. From Las Provincias: Los agricultores... Public phase of next General Town Plan (PGOU) soon The Xàbia Town council has unanimously agreed to start the ‘public participation plan’ for the next General Town Plan (PGOU) of Xàbia. This is the mechanism of participation through which people are involved in drawing up basic outlines which will determine future planning at the socio-environmental level. There will be briefings in the Casa de Cultura, the port and the Arenal, to explain the process and clear doubts and misgivings. Three months will be allowed for public responses (the mandatory period is 45 days) and a number of questionnaires on different aspects related to urban development and planning will be distributed . They will contain questions about the town model, urban space, environment and sustainability, public transport, accessibility, equipment, security, types of housing etc. Dates yet to be set, but sometime over the next three months. From Las Provincias: Xàbia iniciá... Marina Alta municipalities ask for management of la Xàra Transfer plant The Valencia Government owned environmental management company Vaersa has withdrawn from the Marina Alta Recycling company, raising fears that it may make off with a big chunk of the €1.5 million profits accumulated over its years of activity. In response, the Marina Alta mayors, as shareholders, have asked for the free transfer of the la Xara rubbish transfer plant to them, with Vaersa still providing

its services free of charge. If this is not possible, then they’d like to buy the Vaersa shares in the recycling company at a nominal value, coupled with transfer of the la Xara plant and its use for 30 years. From LasProvincias : Los alcaldes.... Spain’s recovery - Better but not best Spain has some of Europe’s highest income-tax rates, but puny overall tax revenue. A report commissioned by Cristobal Montoro, the tax minister, proposes a shift from income tax and social-security contributions to consumer taxes while closing business-tax loopholes. As jobs return, a cycle of improved confidence, consumer spending and faster growth could begin. Analysts are raising their projections, with some seeing GDP growing by 1.3% this year. Even so, unemployment, now standing at almost 26%, will take a decade to fall substantially. And as it is, the budget deficit barely fell last year, as public spending grew. The public debt has hit 94% of GDP . Your Health

Lets talk about food not nutrients

No surprises that the media launched into 2014 with its customary focus on food and dieting! It’s a great annual opportunity to talk to the public about food and health and this year it was sugar in the spotlight. There is no doubt that sugar adds calories to our diet – calories that most of us could do without. And too many calories lead to obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Cutting back on added sugar is an obvious place to trim calories and usually without compromising other essential nutrients. But it’s not the only way. Fat accounts for far more calories in our diet than sugar, yet years of low fat diets have shown that focusing solely on fat doesn’t solve all the problems either. It’s time we got away from this reductionist approach and focused on food not individual nutrients. That’s why, in the Responsibility Deal, we don’t have specific pledges for companies to cut sugar or fat. Instead we ask the food producers, retailers and the hospitality sector to help consumers to cut calories. And 38 companies have responded with diverse commitments to cut calories in a way which works best for their particular foods and drinks. Many retailers are cutting the fat content of their ready meals, while several drinks manufacturers have committed to reducing the sugar content of their products by at least 5%. Confectionery companies have reduced the portion size, keeping the same product we love, but helping us to eat a little bit less of it.

The Grapevine Issue 169 2014| 77 |

This is an encouraging start but there is undoubtedly much more that can be done. I shall continue to urge more companies to step forward and commit to reducing calories, particularly businesses on the high street. They need to take a careful look at how they can encourage their customers to choose smaller portions and swap to lower calorie options. If we want to maximise progress in tackling obesity we need to keep our eye on the right ball. In the RD we have been clear that it’s the total calories that matter more than fat or sugar alone. And that means that everyone in the food industry has a part to play – everyone can do something. We need to be clear with consumers too – when we go to the supermarket or out for a meal we choose foods not nutrients. And to really tackle obesity we need to talk about the importance of increasing physical activity to burn off some more energy as well. When we begin taking this kind of holistic approach, there is some hope that we will be able to make real progress in tackling obesity.

VERY TOP OF THE CLASS - for all true Gastronauts !

JÁVEA : Restaurante BONAMB : November 2013 saw this superb Dutchowned restaurant win a Michelin star. BRAVO ! But have you been yet ? Situated on the Tarraula roundabout at the end of Cabanes and the beginning of the Benitachell/ Golf Club Road BonAmb offers a sophisticated and comfortable interior and beautifully laid out gardens and terraces and truly the best cuisine in Jávea. This award confirms that this most important gastronomic investment in Jávea has been recognised by the professionals and – as we have said before - really puts Jávea “on the gastro-map” completing the triangle of world-class restaurants formed by Quique Dacosta (Denia) and Casa Pepa (Ondara). In October, after their 28-year old chef Alberto Ferruz had received the honourable invitation to attend ‘Millesime Madrid’, we wrote, confidently : “We have little doubt that a Michelin award cannot be far away ?” Reports from serious gastronauts are consistently full of praise. Look out for their Azpilicueta (Rioja), Crianza 2009 – a delight. We suggest that you telephone for details of menus. Booking strongly recommended. The menu-del-día is €24 - Aperitif BonAmb/ two starters/ 4 main courses/ 2-3 desserts + one beverage or glass of red or white house wine). Continued... Restaurante EL GAUCHO (formerly Las Brisias on the Jesús Pobre road). Excellent fish ‘n’ chips (with Azorin in the puerto). Menu-del-día €11.50. We remind readers of the slightly more up-market ALMENDROS restaurant (slow service) opposite for which there have, quite recently, been some good reports. 96 579.5020 / f. Thurs. Restaurante / bar PERI-PERA : Jávea puerto – Avda. De Los Fueros 1 (by the Dolphin roundabout; left on road towards the Guardia). EASTERN RESTAURANTS (Jávea) : INDIAN RESTAURANTS Restaurante MADRE INDIA : Another quality Indian at Arenal beach (in the middle outside of the road that runs right around the beach area). Takeaway facility and Wi-Fi. Noisy, but with appropriate(!) muzak and TV. Not clear if this is a change of ownership as well. Comments welcome. Open 7/7. Tel: 96 646.3768

Restaurante TAJ MAHAL: The “top rank” Indian restaurant at Arenal beach, overlooking main car park. Lunch buffet €7.40. Being refurbished? 96 647.1684 / open daily / http://www.javea247.co.uk/ restaurants/taj-mahal-indian-cuisine/ N.B. NEPALESE RESTAURANTS

Being largely ignorant of Indian cuisine I have wondered why these next three restaurants are talked about over and above all other (Indian? style) restaurants and two are listed at Trip Advisor higher than the other Indian restaurants. We can only assume it must be the Nepalese influence ! Go and try them.

Restaurante BUDDHA PALACE : Arenal - opposite Banca March. Always a most enjoyable experience and the “bush telegraph” tells us that this is the place to go! Tel: 96 579 2894 / E-mail: buddhapalace1@ gmail.com / Open: tlj Restaurante GURKHA PALACE : Avda. Jaime 1, No.8 in Jávea port. Fine food with good ambience. Take away service. Restaurante EVEREST SPICE (previously Riu Rau) (Costa Nova): Another Nepalese restaurant with charming décor; top of road up from Saladar to Costa Nova Panorama just after hairpin bend on the road towards La Guardia and Granadella (just after the closed kindergarten). Pleasant atmosphere. One good report so far. Tel : 96 577.0230 /

INDONESIAN TAPINDO (& “Take-Away”) : In the last row of shops on the right side as you leave Arenal shopping area towards Mercadona. Produces excellent Indonesian food (especially Bami Goreng & Nasi Goreng). All sorts of combinations can be served to take home although there are facilities for eating on their terrace. Ideal for the hungry ! Tel: 96 646.4191 / f.Sun.

CHINESE Restaurante < The WOK BUFFET > : Jávea, at the Barclays roundabout. Very good. Recently refurbished and now with an extensive choice of shellfish included in their bargain price. Eat all you like for Euros 9.95 (special price for kids under 7). Go early (12:30h for lunch, 19:30h for dinner) when the huge spread is at its best. Attentive service. No muzak. A bit of a “canteen” ambience but a great quality “fill-up” if you are hungry and feeding hordes of kids. Tel : 96 579.7016 / daily 12-24h.

Restaurante (the 5-star) BENI ASIA !! : On right side of the Cumbre del Sol road which leads off Benitachell high street (left at lights just after Mas-yMas). This is regarded by very many (including your writer) as the best Chinese restaurant in the whole area, lead by the charming owner, Fan-Fan. Recent visiting residents of Singapore and Hong Kong have strongly confirmed this view. Peking Duck a speciality Every dish tastes different and the food is free of MSG. Take a group of 6 people and order these dishes : 10, 24, 34, 51, 54, 70, 89, 99 & 121 and then tell us that wasn’t the best chinese meal of the year ?? Tel: 96 649.4042 / fanfan@beniasia.com Bar/Restaurante LAS OLAS : HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED why there are always so many cars outside the Bar LAS OLAS (on the Cabo de la Nao road, on the right, half way between Barclays and the Ferreteria) ? Well, go discover it for yourselves. Here is, indeed, a real surprise. A huge range of really good, copious tapas far cheaper than the Arenal beach front ! The size of the portions means this is perhaps 50% of the cost of the beach establishments ? Be careful how much you order - you may not be able to finish. Ideal for hungry kids! Clean tables, good service, bi-lingual menu. TV inside but mostly quiet outside. Tel: 96 577.0175

FISH (from Euros 25.00 per head) :

Restaurante AMARRE 152 (Jávea) : literally “Mooring 152”, tranquil by the bobbing boats at the head of the mooring creek inland from the Parador. Menus del dia €18 & 20 (fish). Excellent for rice/fish dishes. A recent visit showed them on top form. Tel : 96 579.0629 / f. Monday http://www.verema.com/ restaurantes/36008-amarre-152-xabia-javea Restaurante LA CANTINA DE JAVEA : Situated in front of the fishing fleet of Jávea’s port (ground floor right around the back – left side of the one storey building by the fishing boats). Clientele almost all Spanish. Often fully booked so go early (say 12:30h). Very good prices. Their fish menus consist of the catches of the day. They serve all day long (even after the cinema). 96 579 2190 / open tlj : 7/7. Restaurante SUR At the beautiful Granadella creek (down off the Cabo de la Nao and the No.1 beach of the Marina Alta); certainly the best fish restaurant in Jávea (they own their own boat!). Our absolute favourite for fish and a beautiful location. Sensational puds ! Highly rated in Spain’s Gastronomía Guide. Best to book. Tel : 96 577.1612 / July/Aug daily 1023h / otherwise open lunch only (closed mid-Dec end Feb). http://www.restaurantesur.com/

86 | The Grapevine Issue 169 2014

Restaurante MENA : Wonderful position on the rocks at the end of the Las Rotas road (go over Jávea / Montgó to Denia Rd, hard right at bottom roundabout). Expensive with bad muzak. It also used to be xenophobic but we hear it’s under new management – or drive on a little further and there’s another good restaurant on the right. Tel : 96 578.0943 / f. evenings / http:// mena.restaurantesok.com/aquiok/detallrest. jsp?id=547&prov=Alicante AND ANOTHER EXCEPTIONAL (FISH) ITEM ! Outside the Ermita supermarket (by the little church on the Jesús Pobre road) at 10:00h on a Saturday morning is to be found an enterprising Dutchman (Arjen) who is selling fresh martjes, smoked eel, rollmops, smoked mackerel, buckling (a herring smoked whole – as opposed to kippers which are smoked flat), smoked trout and potted shrimps ……. AND (only to order) fresh/frozen HERRINGS (mostly with their roes – and at €1.25 each). When did you last enjoy a fresh herring ? Surely the most marvellous of fishes ? Orders to : 667 997300 (every Sat. morning from 10:00h) or argentocorazon@gmail.com [ and inside this supermarket, at Xavi’s excellent meat counter, can be found the very best STILTON in the area ]. Arjen is in MORAIRA on Thursdays 10 - 14h at Tabaira – Palco.

INCODNITO < Fish ‘n’ Chips > : Jávea, Arenal beach, on main car park. It is not usual for such an establishment to find its way onto this list but it has proved to be very reliable with both fresh fish and chips of excellent quality. Tel : 96 577.0068 / f. Sunday. BOOKING: Good restaurants are busy; best to book. f. = fermé = Day closed (if known)

Antiques and Oddities ‘HELP’ ANTIQUES ROADSHOW. This month I am donating this page to Charity and Lorely from The Art Centre Association in Javea who will be doing valuations of antiques and collectables, EVERY Monday morning at the Art Centre. Valuations cost €3 per item or set. The total proceeds will benefit the charity, ‘HELP’ of Denia and Marina Alta. “As many of you will know we hosted the Antiques Roadshow every year for the past 3 years. The first was in May 2011. The queues were long and the team of experts could really do with more time to advise people and do the research. We have an extensive library on antiques here at the Art Centre. We can talk privately as to where people might be able to sell their family heirlooms. (without the children knowing?) As we get older many of us would like to sell our antiques but are worried about being ripped off. We have access to 9 experts and can cover every aspect of antiques and collectibles. We don’t buy, or sell for you but we will advise you properly. The charge is €3 per item (or set). For example a dinner service would be a set (at €3) and one only need bring 3 or 4 items of the set to have it valued, though extra photos could be helpful. Bubblewrap, towels or blankets are better for wrapping than newspaper. Should you wish to sell your items; the experts will be able to suggest the best course of action. For valuable items, auctions in Madrid or London might be appropriate. There will be a free handout sheet with all this information. As your favourite television programmes on antiques will remind you, there is always sellers’ commission to pay at an auction and the cost of transporting your wares. Ebay can be a great place to sell but it can be a tedious process. One has to take close up accurate photos and write a very detailed description. There is also commission to pay to Ebay for online auctions and there is a fee to pay even if you don’t sell. It’s sometimes better when you have found out what something is worth, to let someone else do all the work, so they can sell it on for a profit. All too often we hold on to items because we know they are ‘worth something’ but we are frightened to sell, for fear of being ripped off ! For those of us who collected antiques and collectibles over the years or were lucky enough to inherit lovely things. The investment in antiques has proved to be really much more secure, valuable and a much better place for your money than a bank. One of the reasons it’s a good time to sell now is that the market is buoyant. Younger folk looking for places to invest and totally disillusioned with banks (in any country) are turning to retro collectibles to secure a pension in the future.

The Grapevine Issue 169 2014| 91 |

Also, so called ‘brown’ furniture is undergoing a revival because finally everyone has realized that solid wood is a better investment than chipboard. If you are looking to invest, buy something you like. You will already know that gold has always been the safe bet in times of crisis, silver is currently doing well. However don’t buy new jewellery for investment, it will take far longer to realise any profit because of the initial profit margin in the new retail price. Another difficult item for investment is a limited edition print. They hardly increase in value, Rembrandt did so many etchings they are still almost affordable, as are the numbered ceramic plates produced by the workers in Picasso’s studio. Items that are too large to bring to the Art Centre, should be photographed and emailed in advance to artcentrejavea@yahoo.com for example : please photograph labels, joints, locks, signatures, marks on ceramics, hallmarks etc. HOWEVER, you don’t get the results until you arrive clutching your €3 in your hot little hand ! ! ” Phone The Art Centre Chairwoman Lorely Griffiths any morning Mon-Thurs 966 47 20 49 for more info - or just turn up on a Monday 10am to 1pm. Art Centre, C/ Lago Tana. Javea.

Badminton There are now two sessions for badminton – on Mondays from 10am-midday and on Thursday from 10am-midday. Any U3A members interesting in finding out more should contact group Philip Gauron at badminton@u3ajavea.org. Pilates The Beginners and Intermediate groups have proved very popular and are full. Any members who are interested in being part of a new beginners group with a minimum of 8 people should contact the group leader, Carol Pilgrim. Book Club Javea U3A has more than 50 groups, but ideas for new ones are always welcome. Among those currently being considered are Floristry for Beginners. Karen Smith, a qualified florist, is interested in setting up a new group to teach the art. The workshop would be for 2 hours, 1 hour of demonstration, followed by 1 hour of practical. Fresh flowers will be supplied. For more information, contact Karen at flowersforyouspain@gmail.com. Ladies that Lunch This new monthly group is a way of meeting people over lunch and a jolly good chin-wag. ART CENTRE ASSOCIATION, JAVEA The aim of the Art Centre is to encourage both beginners and experienced artists alike, by offering tuition in a wide variety of traditional and contemporary arts and crafts. There is an occasional newsletter, and an ‘Antiques Road Show’ for charity each year. Membership is €5 per year from September to September. Members are welcome to use the Art Centre as a meeting point. The Art Centre is in a quiet country house not too far away from ‘Inn On The Green’ bowling club and near Las Laderas Urbanization. Part of the house has been remodelled with extra windows, special lighting and central heating for the two studios, reception area and coffee lounge. WIFI is available and free. There is easy parking and wheelchairs are welcome. Lorely and Glyn Griffiths have retired after more than 35 years working around the World. Glyn had previously been involved in telecommunications (now promoted to car park attendant and janitor for the Art Centre ! ! ) This will be the 4th Art Association Lorely will be running. She started the first Design College in Nairobi more than 30 years ago and finally was looking after the Art Society in Dubai for many years. Subjects usually available are: - Painting in Oil, Acrylic, Watercolour, Pastel, Drawing, Mixed Media, Portraiture, Creative Textiles, and Porcelain Restoration. All of the subjects are available for absolute beginners or for those more advanced. Although the Art Centre is a non-profit association, there will be a flat charge of 20 Euros per 3-hour session, whatever the subject, this pays the teachers and covers the overheads. Also everyone is welcome to arrive early and leave late or come for a coffee any morning. Usually groups will meet (3hrs per session) once a week, in the mornings, 10am to 1pm which includes free tea, coffee & ‘choccy bikkies’ at any time ! ! We will always welcome enthusiastic and experienced people to teach any existing or new subject. Those who would like to attend could add their names to the subject “Wish List” and in that way everyone can be tied in together. It is advisable to pencil your names in to secure a place. Didn’t you always say when you had time, you would learn to paint ! ! In addition the Art Centre Association has studio/meeting rooms available for ANY group or club who want somewhere to meet on a ‘one off’ or regular basis or, who just want to come along and make a mess ! ! Fully equipped studios with tables, comfortable chairs, easels, good lighting, projector screen, paper roll, white spirit, art & antiques reference library, car park, central heating, wheelchair access, coffee lounge, ‘choccy bikkies’ and as much tea/coffee/softies as you can drink (but bring your own wine ! !). All of the above included free for €5 per head per morning or afternoon session. As this is a non-profit association, if the meeting is cancelled you don’t have to pay. Come and visit the Art Centre, (we can E-mail or post you a map) or for more details please contact Chairwoman: Lorely Griffiths on Javea 966 47 20 49. E-mail: artcentrejavea@yahoo.com
