Master European Law School 2020-2021 An ambitious, in-depth study of European law and its interactions with national and international law Are you inquisitive, analytical and internationally-minded?

Then European Law School, with three specialisations, may be the programme you're looking for. It offers a broad range of courses on different areas of European law, such as competition law, criminal law, family law and financial regulation. You'll also develop a thorough understanding of the methods and content of legal argumentation. Curious?

What does the European Law School master’s programme offer?

Studying Law in Maastricht The academic year at Maastricht University consists of two semesters and is fully structured around Problem-Based Learning (PBL). You will follow a number of blocks per semester, each focusing on a specific subject. You will study this subject in part independently, but primarily together with your fellow students in tutorial groups. You will also attend lectures that support the learning process by providing background information and structure for the study material. During skills trainings, you will also learn to apply the knowledge you have gained to the real-life professional practice. At the end of each block, there will be an assessment to determine if your knowledge level is sufficient.

Problem-Based Learning (PBL): education is active, innovative and small scale. Michelle: “ I really liked the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) system, and especially the tutorial group sessions we had. I believe it's very important to learn how to work effectively in a team during your studies, because it will be a crucial aspect of your professional life. Maastricht University definitely emphasises the development of this soft skill, which is not the case everywhere.”

The programme The one-year European Law School master’s programme provides an in-depth study of European law and teaches you to look at traditional legal subjects from a European and comparative perspective. The programme consists of two specialisations: Internal Market Law, and Public Law and Governance. You can also decide to combine courses from the

two specialisations. The programme culminates in the master’s thesis, an independent research project which you work on under the close supervision of a member of the academic staff.

European Law and Market Integration The specialisation in European Law and Market Integration is business-oriented and focusses on the in-depth analysis of European integration from both legal and market-oriented perspectives. It prepares you to work at European institutions, law firms and large companies, among others.

European Public Law and Governance The specialisation in European Public law and Governance focuses on fundamental rights and constitutional law. It is a great choice if you would like to pursue a career in the public sector, working at governmental institutions, embassies or NGOs. Michelle's advice for future students: “While studying, it's good to make plans for after graduation. What kind of job would you like? And where would you like to work? An internship is great for helping you figure out what you really want, and this programme gives you the freedom to do an internship as part of your studies.”

What’s next? Career opportunities As a graduate of the European Law School, you will be a specialist in comparative law, including European and major national legal systems.

• You will be equipped with the essential legal and linguistic skills for an international legal career.

• You will be an attractive candidate for positions in the international business world, at international and European institutions, at organisations at the national level.

Michelle: “I have also learned a lot from the extracurricular activities offered at Maastricht University. The Afro-Caribbean Maastricht University Society, for instance, organised several interesting debates. To me, these activities show that the university is a place for sharing ideas and a place where different voices are heard.”
