Brussels is dealing with a vast contradiction in it’s urban context: more than two million square meters of office space is currently standing vacant in the city, while over fifty thousand families are still on the waiting list for social housing. This master dissertation researches the opportunities new property systems offer for the transformation of the vacant office space into a productive space for the city in the heart of the European quarter in Brussels. Thus reshaping the Central Business District of Brussels into a liveable neighbourhood for low- and middle income households. Using property management systems like the community land trust, the CBD can be transformed into a diverse, resilient, dynamic, productive and co-managed neighbourhood that is ready for the future.
