01 “Phantom Forests” Climate Change Studio / Planetary Waste Flow Map / Professor Aroussiak Gabrielian / Spring 2024 My current studio project asks how we can change the approaches to deforestation from wasteful exploitation to altruism in a way that transfers agency back to the trees.

Unfortunately, one-third of the world’s 60,000 tree species are endangered. This is due to industrial agriculture, timber logging, mining, expansion and infrastructure, and climate change. Humans are decimating 2,400 trees per minute.

In attempts to survive pressure from environmental advocates, many companies and institutions in our new age of corporate environmentalism are attempting to achieve net-zero emissions. Mass tree planting operations are the result, which ultimately create phantom forests over time due to their extreme lack of biodiversity.

This planetary map represents the progression of tree loss becoming ecological wasteland, and thus headed toward a global wasteland if not addressed. The next step of this studio is to bring this research within the region of Southern California, where I will be mapping and modeling the forces that allow trees to spread their seeds. The answer to solving tree loss lies in the natural regeneration of forests, so seed spreading methods are the necessary foundation.

02 “The Lungs of the Dominguez Watershed” Urban Design Studio / Final / Professor Jessica Henson / Fall 2023 On September 30th, 2021, a warehouse making hand sanitizer and anti-bacterial wipes caught on fire in Carson, California. Hydrogen sulfide entered the Dominguez Creek Watershed, resulting in significant odors spreading for miles and displacing thousands. This is the epitome of the estuary’s landscape today - a heavily industrialized network that has paved over the diverse indigenous ecologies of the region, leaving communities exposed to unbearable toxicities. 2.8M people reside within this watershed, and 61% of it is impervious.

We can address the lack of porous landscapes by reinstating the historical ecologies of this prolific watershed, but with a modern twist.

There is potential to breathe new life into a landscape that has forgotten its ecological anatomy altogether.

The first major park in a system of watershed revitalization, ‘The Lungs of the Dominguez Watershed,’ incorporates the watershed’s historical ecologies of vernal pools, freshwater marshes, riparian woodland, saltwater marsh meadows, wet meadows, lakes, riverwashes, coastal sage scrub, grasslands and flowerfields. This park will be a foundation for the rest of the watershed’s restoration into the future, and provide an ecological centerpiece for the surrounding communities to enjoy for years to come.

03 “Ramped Remediation at Hahamongna Environmental Education Center” Topography Studio / Final / Professor Takako Tajima / Spring 2023 This environmental education center is built as a seasonal wetland, acknowledging water as the original form of infrastructure for the indigenous Tongva-Gabrielino people of this site. Their settlement, Hahamog-na, was deeply connected to the Arroyo Seco, which is the stream that gives life to the settlers of their land today.

By collecting rainwater from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory nearby, this design can move up to 3 million gallons of rainwater during a 1” rainfall event. In order to control this, the topography of the site is based on a ramped topographic strategy that forms detention ponds connected by a seasonal stream. Before the water hits the stream, it will be UV-filtered and cleared of sediment. As it travels through the ramped gardens below, it will be phytoremediated by plants, and then emptied out into the Arroyo Seco.

The vegetation of the site follows a soil moisture gradient, with plants that can withstand more water near the top of the system, such as tule, rush, arroyo willow, and mulefat. Plants that require drier soil will be planted near the bottom, such as purple sage, catalina ironwood, sagebrush, yarrow, buckwheat, and manzanita.

The hope is that over the span of 50 years, the seasonal stream will become more embedded into the entire Hahamongna Watershed Park by daylighting the stream beyond the site boundary, constructing more ramped gardens along the catch basins, and incorporating more rainwater from the nearby communities to filter through the Arroyo.

04 Model Fabrication Los Angeles River Integrated Design Lab / Professor Alexander Robinson / Summer 2023 - Present The mission of the Los Angeles River Integrated Design Lab is to explore the future of the Los Angeles River through the cross sections of landscape architecture, hydraulic engineering, and community design. We seek to understand how the river’s complex functionality and needs could be met through civic imagination. To accomplish this, our lab is constructing a 1:120 scale model of the ‘Glendale Narrows’ portion of the Los Angeles River to use for testing and community engagement.

Since June of 2023, I have fabricated vegetation and trees through 3D printing and silicone molds. The thousands of plants attach to the model through magnetic paint and are meant to demonstrate how vegetation impacts the river’s hydraulic patterns and vice versa. I selected the colors for the vegetation based on the real colors of the river’s plants. I also help to construct the model itself, which is primarily made of milled foam, wood, and paint.

05 “Schwule Landschaften” William + Neoma Timme Graduate Fellow Fellowship / USC Architecture / Berlin, Germany / Spring 2023 Berlin has long been an anchor for queer culture. The world’s first gay magazine was published here in 1896, and the city gained an unprecedented reputation for queer acceptance in the 1920s during the Weimar Republic. Sodomy was almost decriminalized in 1929 across Germany, but the Nazi Regime took control and pushed harder in the opposite direction. Berlin rebuilt its queer community during the Cold War through activism in the 1970s, and opened the world’s first gay museum in 1985. Today, Berlin hosts some of the most prominent gayborhoods in the world.

This city is living proof of the resilience queer communities embody.

Through the lens of landscape architecture and urban design, Berlin is the host of a unique, radical, and innovative queer urban fabric, demonstrated in its parks, plazas, and streetscapes. In order to visualize the textures of the urban queer experience in Berlin, I photographed the city’s current and historical queer landscapes on film in June and July of 2023. From the nude ‘beaches’ in Volkspark Hasenheide to the emotional memorials honoring the horrific history of Germany’s discrimination against queer people, this trip broadened my understandings of queer culture immensely and proved that personal identities and public space are inherently intertwined.
