The Plant is an editorially autonomous weekly paper. We have the right to refuse all submissions that we regard as being racist, homophobic, xenopho-

bic, sexist, or anything else that could get The Plant slapped with a libel suit. All opinions expressed in the plant do not necessarily belong to The Plant, but are

those of individuals. Articles, graphics, photography, and other content submitted to The Plant or The Plant staff does belong to The Plant. The Plant wel-

comes all typed and signed letters to the editor under 400 words. We reserve the right to reject or edit all letters for clarity, spelling or grammar.

Art or gang slang?

Often demonized and dismissed by politicians and police as "gang hooliganism", graffit and street art have nonetheless emerged as a leading force in contemporary art worldwide By Chris McConnell, Excalibur (York University)

TORONTO (CUP) – Graffiti is many things to many people, but by and large it is a conversation that a city is having with itself – spoken by many voices and seen through many eyes. Its inherent illegitimacy makes it by default interactive, which allows it to be uniquely powerful in a way many galleryshowcased artists can only dream of. Graffiti is pervasive, yet often overlooked, typically because we are taught to disregard it. One friend of mine recently had her mind

Stenciled street art

blown when she realized that graffiti actually contained text, comparing it to a “Magic Eye” stereoscopic image. Toronto city councillor Howard Moscoe was quoted in the Toronto Star saying, “I think most people can tell the difference between a tag and artwork.” The “tag” Moscoe is referring to is a piece of graffiti that is merely a word, typically the artistʼs name, as opposed to a picture. However, I would like to suggest that tagging – while admittedly far less appealing

aesthetically – is an important part of graffiti culture that not only forms the foundation of the art but also allows inexperienced readers to discover and interpret more complex pieces. The historical timeline of graffiti is open for debate. Cave paintings and hobo symbols are worth considering for inclusion, but the earliest forms of what we would call modern graffiti appeared in the mid-20th century during the Second World War. Many U.S. soldiers, spread across the globe, would leave behind the familiar “Kilroy Was Here” tag with a drawing of a face created from a horizontal line and several circles. To this day, this remains a part of our culture – I found a Kilroy drawing, sans text, markered onto a Toronto subway ad warning people about iPod theft. The actual culture that has now been labeled graffiti is one of the four pillars of hiphop culture – along with MCing, DJing and breakdancing – all of which are based on expression and creativity built out of nextto-no resources. The first single-person tagging campaign was apparently run by “Cornbread,” a.k.a. Darryl McCray, who began writing his nickname with a crown over it in 1967 in order to impress a high school crush. He went on to tag an airplane belonging to the Jackson 5 and even an elephant at the Philadelphia zoo. This filtered through into the development of hip-hop culture in New York City in the late 70s and early 80s, when writers would use stolen supplies and stolen space in order to give themselves the artistic outlet they craved. Subway trains were the preferred canvass because a well-bombed train

This week I foolishly placed my trust in a sorry excuse for a male named Samuel Lavigne Schmidt

could then take the artistsʼ name and work across the entire city for many eyes to see. When NYC cracked down on subway graffiti with their “broken windows theory” of criminal space reclamation – which postulates that neighbourhoods that seem unwatched and unprotected are more susceptible to criminal activity – local artists were pushed onto building walls and competition for territory became extremely high, making it a dangerous time for artists, who risked being attacked when going out alone. Starting with NYCʼs subway train template, graffiti took to the broader continental railway system and was soon seen by people from all over. These works often took the form of full-fledged spray-paint murals and were primarily intended to carry the artistsʼ tag and accompanying messages to other graffiti writers. This is where “wildstyle” emerged, which is possibly the most definitive graffiti style in todayʼs terms: a complex interlocking arrangement of text with arrows and symbols that was highly codified and impossible for laypeople to decipher. This is where tagging comes in handy to the newcomer, as one may not be able to recognize a masterful BACON piece without already realizing that someone is tagging the unusual word across the city. A dispute developed within the culture between artists who would spend many hours meticulously working on a piece and those who would “Cap” (named after the artist) their pieces by just spraying a quick bubbleletter throw-up over top. These quick throwups are among some of the most visible today. The street-level disputes exemplified by capping are only one of many risks graffiti

artists face, including arrest and death by a speeding train while at work. In time, street art was soon stuck with a more inclusive definition. In 1986, in Providence, R.I., Shepard Fairey designed a sticker with wrestler Andre the Giantʼs face and the words “Andre the Giant Has a Posse.” These were distributed among the skateboard community as part of a campaign Fairey called “an experiment in phenomenology.” He eventually redesigned the sticker into the ubiquitous OBEY Giant. Then there's street artʼs expansion into the world of the quasi-legal, legal and legit. Stenciling became prominent as a method of quick-application of detailed images with minimal risk of arrest. Stickers and postering (like the work of Toronto artist fauxreel) also emerged as a way for artists to apply even more detail while minimizing the actual illegal vandalism they were doing. Contemporary installation street art (like, internationally, that of Mark Jenkins and Specter here at home) even evolved into high-technology artwork through the Graffiti Research Lab: projection “tagging” with lasers, LED “throwies” and glowing LED tags. With this increased legitimacy came a fallover into gallery space. You can currently find a number of galleries in Toronto showcasing graffiti work. The Royal Ontario Museum also showcased a number of local street artists this past year in an exhibit called “Housepaint.” For further exploration, check out Torontoarea graffiti blog at www.416streets.com as well as the global graffiti blog based out of NYC at www.woostercollective.com.

The self is the remainder after society extracts what it needs from you. Society has been utilizing a co-opting formula to negotiate the integral role of the so-called individual in the operating modalities of industrialization and consumer-generated and generating economies. In all first-world countries, the individual, the client, the user, the consumer, the voter is what makes the wheels turn, as cogs and fuel, as labour and manager, to erect the tower and pyramids of private corporate wealth. Capitalism and liberal democracy are partners, after all in sickness and in health. The robust period of modernism was the health stage and the sickness is now its reward. An uncomfortable partnership indeed. The paths of each, however, are set on diverging directions; the health of one comes at the expense of the other. This is what the existence of the self comes into play. The co-opting formula used in mollifying the fragile being of the individual; the entertainment and seduction and distraction industries are at their wits end to come up with seven more alluring balms. This thumbnail sketch of our much more complexly entangled world is intentionally brief and stark. The self is only visible by exaggerating the degrees of contrast needed to balance the overwhelming darkness of the prevailing situation. The self is virtually invisible. The portion that is the self is left like a

crumb in the all-consuming gluttony of our collectivity has much to reveal when closely inspected. The self has a very narrow track to tread, with the ocean of madness on one side and the vast bog of humanity on the other, to retain its sanity. That which our society rejects is the nebulousness and precariousness of ephemeral and unquestionable affect that is peculiarly human and yet despairingly alien. In fact, what society labels spiritual or metaphysical

T he True Tale of Humpty Dumpt y's Demise Humpty Dumpty never sat on a wall He did however have a great fall. His tale I will attempt to tell, Without any bias, I did not know him well

Humpty Dumpty was an alcoholic egg He went to the bar and ordered a keg. "That's a lot of ale," the bartender said "Too much of that and you'll end up dead."

Humpty laughed at the man behind the bar. The bartender shrugged ... Humpty would not go far. Humpty got started on his ale Didn't stop until he hurled in a pail. Once again Humpty was hammered. The barhoppers knew this and let Humpty stammer, "One day I'll be gone, enjoy Humpty now!" The bargoers sat in indifference, not caring to howl.

Lost in confusion Choices to make Donʼt know which ones to take Itʼs either one way or the other, But which is better. If I go one way I end up in a black hole, In a ditch where Iʼm all alone. If I go the other way I end up with sadness

No one to help I only have my heart to follow And it doesnʼt know where to go Lost in confusion Not knowing what to chose Which one is right And which one is wrong What do I do.

by a.c

Out of the bar and into the street Humpty was a mess and in no way neat. He stumbled drunkenly into the brothel The place fell silent. It was not possible. Humpty had returned after last visit's incident A girl yelled, "Get out of here! You are not decent! Last time you came you ruined us all. Beat up poor Molly, threw her against the wall.

Humty cried back, "Fuck you you whores, To me your service is a bore!"

Back on the streets, Humpty was lonely. Everyone treated him ever so coldly. With good reason I would think too He was a drunk, unemployed and ever so blue.

Humpty tried to think of the good old days It was hard as they were so far away Days when he had a job and a wife Until she was stabbed, ending her life

Sheʼs been nicer lately

Darren thinks sheʼs good looking she would agree that she would never eat anything: blue or in the dark she talks to her dogs as if they were people and they understand her better she never wears a real bra or shirt for that matter

she might have been a wrestler in her last life because she dresses like one

People say sheʼs the office sleuth she thinks this itʼs a bad thing

is the exit gate into the Netherlands of madness. And yet, here resides this thin waif, the self. If this is all that remains of being, it is no wonder that the ecology of living is diminished so. The post-human is just another way of heralding the disappearance of the self. Selfishness and ego are the reductive remnants of a self-demeaned. But where does poetry and song, art and wonder reside?

by j.m

This is what started all of his sadness Ending his life would bring everyone gladness So he started the slow walk to his death Not even pausing to enjoy his last breath

He climbed on the wall and faced the vast land And shouted out, "This is who I am!" Humpty Dumpty is officially done." He stood looking at the rising sun.

Humpty Dumpty jumped off of the wall. His statement came in the form of a fall. Humpty's yellow yolk seeped through the cracks Chief of police wanted a smoke, reached for his pack.

"Wrap him up, there's nothing to see." That day possessed no humor, no smiles, no glee. There were no kings horses and no kings men And no one ever spoke of Humpty again.

..angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night..

“Hipsterdom is the first "counterculture" to be born under the advertising industry's microscope, leaving it open to constant manipulation; but also forcing its participants to continually shift their interests and affiliations. Less a sub-culture, the hipster is a consumer group – using their capital to purchase empty authenticity and rebellion. But the moment a trend, band, sound, style or feeling gains too much exposure it is suddenly looked upon with disdain. Hipsters cannot afford to maintain any cultural loyalties or affiliations for fear they will lose relevance.” And “it is rare, if not impossible, to find an individual who will proclaim themself a proud hipster. It's an odd dance of self-identity – adamantly denying your existence while wearing clearly defined symbols that proclaims it.” by Douglas Haddow, “Hipster: The Dead End of Western Civilization” (AdBusters) -

IN DEFENSE of HIPSTER? Not entirely. But definitely in offence of: those who think that the way in which trends manifest themselves wonʼt change; writers who skip the first class and forget that case studies cannot be compared to sanctified generalizations about counter/sub-cultures come and gone so far that theyʼre nauseatingly nostalgic for the generation that holds the pen and therefore writes their embittered critique of how the pejoratively referenced ʻkidsʼ get their freak on at the watering hole. Thassss all. It had been a whole while and chapter of my short life ago when I last read, nodding my head and shrugging my shoulders in non-contemplative agreement, Douglas Haddowʼs Adbusters cover story, “Hipster: The Dead End of Western Civilization”. A friend sent me an excerpt of the article as a half-jibe half-good morning giggle and Iʼm not sure. Maybe it was because Iʼm a morning person, but finally, I reacted. For those of you who have by some way missed the article, its title is pretty literal and

the above are two excerpts that demonstrate itʼs near scathing commentary. Until recently, his arguments never struck me as wrong and his stance never seemed misguided. It is only when we look at the position of judgment do we understand his stance to be close-minded slander from start to finish. With intelligence and half-rationalised arguments jammed in to flesh it out, the article fails at presenting an objective stance; an article can become subjective and slanted once facts are introduced to weigh it to one side. Instead, (and many editorialists are guilty of this), it is rant, albeit expert and well scribed. It was a subject that interested him or a peeve that petted him in the wrong way but it stemmed from disdain and concluded in the same way. Haddow sets up a straw-manargument and gives this ʻtrendʼ no fighting chance before destroying it with weak case studies and swooping generalizations. Cutting to the chase: Hipster is the only trend/sub-culture/counter-culture to emerge since an entire generation was breast fed

on the pornographically saturated, attentionsplitting world changing NET was gifted to us by Berners-Lee. Some would argue, emo, screamo and hardcore as trends but let us no beleaguer the point and for the point of my point let them stand as benign growths on each other and more of scenes that followed music then anything else. Hipster is just the new word to call kids, to label them or to classify them. As Haddow is older than the average ʻkidʼ who he critiques, he is bringing the baggage of 80s90s sub-culture that so defined his youth and trying to graft it onto the youth of a new generation; one that has fewer issues with race, fewer issues with class and fewer issues with authority. Let us not forget that Hipsters are one of the few trends or subcultures to not employ some sort of senseless acts of destruction or vandalism as a requisite to, not, join. It is also the first subculture without a defined prejudice, mission statement or dogma. It allows people to be young, be cool, be hip and still have their own personality. Arguably, the pretentious-

ness that is most noted is not a doctrine, a pre-meditated, a subscribed-to or a dictated way of acting but a by-product of the allowance for eccentricities coupled with the zeal of youth. An insatiable, non-directed appetite is the corner stone to the hipster trend. Haddow paints the indefinable as the undesirable, when in reality, the fact that hipsters are born of the Internet, that they are the first generation to understand if not all itʼs capable of what it can be used for, it can never bore. Hipsters have nothing to pin them down with because they are constantly finding more, as the trend has no concrete characteristics, it allows itself to blow and grow with whatever the surf brings. It is this openness that makes the hipster the first post-modern trend/sub-culture. GO GO GO because most dead ends lead to parks, so have fun.

A Balancing Act Alison Henstridge weighs in on the challenging day-to-day lives of Dawson athletes. Your alarm clock goes off. Itʼs 5:30 a.m. Unwillingly, you get out of bed. It seems like it has become an automatic movement- almost robotic. Homework is sprawled across your bedroom floor from pushing it off your bed just as your head hit the pillow, if youʼre lucky, a mere five hours ago. Your body is stiff, sore and bruised. You get dressed none the less and have breakfast and prep yourself for the long day ahead. With your head held high, you grab your book bag and your smelly kit bag that your mother keeps complaining about and head out that door.

“I donʼt have a job and I donʼt even have enough time to sleep,” -Kristin McNamee, fifth semester North South studies and rugby player.

You might live on the South shore, where it takes an average of 40 minutes to get from your house to Dawson. Or you might live up on the North shore where it could take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half. (If youʼre one of the lucky ones and you live on the island then, donʼt complain.) You go through an entire day at school, taking classes from 8:30 to 6. It is then you

Dawsonʼs Womenʼs Volleyball Team

need to rush out of school to get to practice. After a rough three hour practice, itʼs 9 p.m. Itʼs dark and it just gets colder and colder every minute. Exhausted, you drag your body over to the nearest metro and collapse on a seat until youʼre able to get home and actually collapse in some sort of bed.

“I need to Tivo all my shows now because cheer practice takes a lot of my time.” -Elana de Pagter, cheerleader

But you canʼt go to sleep yet. As you enter your room, you realize that you have homework to do and exams the next day. You weigh your choices: study and get about 3 hours of sleep or donʼt study, sleep a little more and fail your exam. Which option would you choose? It seems obvious right? Go to sleep and study on the bus, metro and in between classes. Actually, there wouldnʼt need to be a choice like this for most, because this isnʼt reality for the majority of Dawson students. This is, however, the reality of a student athlete. Most students juggle school, work, friends and the occasional night out. If a

student cannot deal with t h e i r CEGEP studies, all they have to do Dawsonʼs Menʼs Lacross Team is take time out with from their social life in order to have more time to deal with their studies. Student athletes donʼt have that option; their social life is cut from them the moment they sign up for a sport. “I tend to lose track of my studies,” says Laura Bernier, first semester North South student and rugby player. “But I manage getting on track, although I could use more sleep.” But getting on track and staying on it is never really easy. These athletes have the same course load as everyone else and the same amount of assignments. Consequences also arise when these athletes fail to pass their courses. If students fail to pass more than half their courses during a semester, they are put on a success contract, which can help them get organized and pass their next semester. If a student athlete does not pass and is put on the contract, their ability to play on their team can be taken away from them. It is a decision that student athletes truly fear. As mid-terms approach, these students are even under more stress. Not only is it a crucial time for their studies but it is also mid season, a crucial time in evaluating their progress out on the field, the rink, the court and the gyms. Certain student athletes are not able to cut back on their social life because they feel that it is part of a set routine. They opt for eliminating other passtimes like television and social networking. “I need to Tivo all my shows now because cheer practice takes a lot of my time,” says Elana de Pagter, first semester cheerleader. “I also give up some sleep.” Do you still think you have what it takes to be a student athlete? Here are more decisions to consider: Nights out, game days and your work schedule. These are just other items to consider once you sign up and commit yourself to a team. Certain sports have their games played on Fridays through Sundays and involve early wake-

up hours. A late night out (usually involving drinking) tends to immobilize certain movements, causing your body to be at risk for game day. It also usually results by having you sit (or stand) on the sidelines. Coaches donʼt want you to risk injuring yourself and penalizing your team for the remainder of the season.

“I tend to lose track of my studies,” “But I manage getting on track, although I could use more sleep.”Laura Bernier, first semester North South student.

“I put aside some weekend time, but I still stay focused on having as much fun as I can,” said third semester liberal arts student and member of the rowing team, Rob Carle. How about a work schedule? When someone sacrifices all their time to perform well in their studies and in athletics they donʼt necessarily have the time to squeeze in a few hours here and there. So how do they manage? “I donʼt have a job and I donʼt even have enough time to sleep,” said Kristin McNamee, fifth semester North South studies and rugby player. For some like McNamee, jobs are only seasonal because they are off-season but for others like rower Rob Carle, “jobs are very possible.” Except that bosses are not always lenient and your job could be given to someone else In order to fill in your spots and when your sport finishes, your job might no longer be available. Student athletes have a lot to consider when signing up for a sport. Not everyone can do it; not everyone is made for it. Do you have what it takes?

“I like the Jonas Brothers; I find that they have a good sound. I never liked Rock ’n’ Roll or Rap. I’ve always loved pop music. Before Lady Gaga, The Backstreet Boys used to be my favourite. I own all of their CDs,” said Jessica Cara, first semester Social Sciences student. Sorry Jessica, but I couldn’t disagree more. In May 2004, to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the birth of rock ’n’ roll, Sean O’Hagan of The Observer listed 50 of its most critical moments. I couldn’t help but feel sad when I compared the items from the beginning of his list with those at the end. Today, it’s not about the music, or even about the human values that inspired the pioneers of blues and rock; it’s all about how much money can be made, or how much marketing hype can be generated. Our capitalist system has brought the standards of popular music down to the lowest possible levels. So, I don’t blame Jessica and her friends for their musical taste – it’s what they have been sold.

In 1964, the British Invasion began with the arrival of The Beatles, a group of working class musicians who had been inspired by Chuck Berryʼs guitar-based rock. Let me illustrate my concerns by giving a few examples from O’Hagan’s top 50: 1954 – Elvis Presley, a poor, white, truck driver from the extremely racist southern United States records That’s All Right Mama at Sun Studios in Memphis, breaking the barrier against “negro music”. 1955 – Chuck Berry releases Maybellene, the sound that would influence a whole generation of musicians such as The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, and Bruce Springsteen. 1965 – Bob Dylan releases Like a Rolling Stone, more of an epic poem than a song from one of our era’s most creative artists. Those were momentous events in music history and, indeed, for our Western culture. Let’s compare them to the later entries in O’Hagan’s list: 1995 – Blur versus Oasis. In other words, 1995 was defined by a marketing agency fabricated battle of the bands by two popular (go figure!) and extremely bad Brit Pop bands. 1995 – The birth of The Spice Girls.

Johnny Cash, being bad-ass.

2003 – Beyoncé Knowles tops the charts. What the hell happened? How could we, in less than 50 years, go from creative genius to marketing agency fabricated, one-dimensional, would-be performers churning out mindless rubbish? Is there any hope of escape from this prison of mediocrity in the future? Let’s take a closer look. The emergence of Rock ’n’ Roll music occurred from 1954 and 1959, with recordings released by Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, and many more. These were regular people who struggled to get their message out as musicians between their part-time jobs. Chuck Berry, for example, was a barber, Elvis a truck driver. Many artists like these struggled on the fringes of the music establishment. Like many of the musicians today, they sang of love, sexuality, freedom, and other issues that were meaningful to their audiences. However, unlike today’s musicians, they actually lived that reality. It wasn’t fed to them by their marketing companies or other handlers. In the early 1960s, Rock music evolved but never lost its ties to the original sound created by those pioneers in the 50s. An urban folk movement emerged from Greenwich Village, led by Bob Dylan and others such as Pete Seeger and Peter, Paul, and Mary. Dylan not only revolutionized the music, but also influenced the culture that surrounded it with songs supporting and popularizing the Civil Rights and anti-war movements. Then, at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, Dylan shocked most of his fans and was booed loudly by them for “going electric”. It was unexpected, outrageous, “wrong”, and when everyone recovered from the shock, recognized as one of the most momentous occasions in popular music history. To what can we compare that today? How about Kanye West interrupting a mediocre artist at a mediocre award show for a meaningless award. Did Kanye’s orchestrated temper tantrum change anything? In 1964, the British Invasion began with the arrival of The Beatles, a group of working class musicians who had been inspired by Chuck Berry’s guitar-based rock. Other groups from the UK, such as The Animals and The Rolling Stones had also done their homework by listening to and learning from the early blues masters and had integrated R&B and Chicago urban Blues into their unique sounds. Who can we compare these greatest groups of their time, and possibly of all time, to today’s performers? Lil’ Jon? Lady Gaga? Chris Brown? By the late 1960s, diversity flourished in Rock

music, sometimes influenced by numerous psychedelic drugs. Guitar heroes like Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton arose. Black musicians now also claimed their place in centre stage, not just being left in the background: Aretha Franklin climbed the charts; and the dazzling stage techniques of James Brown were born. It was in the 1970s when it started to go wrong when capitalism raised its ugly head, attracted by the big money to be made from the affluent teenagers and young adults who made up the majority of the audiences. Capitalists don’t like to take risks with their profits, so Rock music started to become more bland and formulaic – Corporate Rock was born. Musicians were now becoming millionaires. For many originally poor or working class musicians, it seems that affluence was harder to handle than hard work and poverty. The Beatles split up. Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Keith Moon, Elvis Presley, Brian Jones and countless other less famous artists died from drug overdoses. The 1970s were also marked by the birth of the synthesizer and the music that accompanied it, Disco. Compared to today, the 1970s were not all that bad in the end. There were bad moments, as previously noted, but we also saw the release of The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall by Pink Floyd, Hotel California by The Eagles, the creation of Led Zeppelin and the birth of Punk Music as a reaction to Corporate Rock with Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols by The Sex Pistols and London Calling by The Clash. In the 1980s, the popular music industry really goes into the gutter. MTV came on the air, a main factor of the decline. Music was now about the most innovative or outrageous video. With MTV came Madonna, Whitney Houston, Bon Jovi, Boys to Men, and many more, all too sickening to mention. “I find that anything written or recorded after August 1st, 1981 [The day that MTV was launched] is not worth listening to,” says Constance Mellet, third semester Cinema, Video, and Communications. “Johnny Cash, Billie Holiday, and Ray Charles are my favourites,” she added. From there, it became a snowball effect. The music industry seemed incapable of stopping the avalanche of mediocrity that just got worse as the years progressed. The 1990s are, to this day, by far the nastiest decade in music history. People like Mariah Carey, The Backstreet Boys, Celine Dion, Metallica, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears, N*Sync, 50 Cent, and many more all became “Superstars”. I guess that just being a mere musician,

“I find that anything written or recorded after August 1st, 1981 [The day that MTV was launched] is not worth listening to,” says Constance Mellet, third semester Cinema, Video, and Communications. Janis Joplin who, like Britney, was known to consume mind-altering substances to excess, never walked into a hairdresser at three in the morning, drunk out of her mind, to demand that her hair be shaved to the scalp. Like Britney, Janis got drunk and stoned to chase away her demons, but she never turned it into a circus event followed by the media. And, she could sing! By following its current path, our society is doomed. The greed and lack of humanity brought about by unregulated capitalism are leading to global economic disaster. As a consequence, the music industry will also collapse, or maybe just fade away like Glam Rock and Disco. So, let’s not lose hope people. Once we hit rock bottom, we will rise again. People will have things to sing about, and maybe, just maybe, artists will be more concerned about their music and less about their commercial endorsements. Peace!

like Elvis, Dylan, or Mark Knopfler, just wasn’t enough for them. “I can’t really bash on the Backstreet Boys because I used to be a huge fan, like every other nine year old kid,” announced Charles Fox, third semester Arts and Culture student. “However, as I have grown since then, I have realized a decay in the music industry, with all of the Lil’ Drezzy, Young Flippy, Lil’ Mike, and Smartpop or whatever they call themselves these days,” added Fox. “My favourite bands of all time, hands down, are The Clash and The Sex Pistols.” In the last 50 years of music, we have gone from Elvis, Dylan, and Jimi Hendrix to The Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, and Kanye West. Then there’s Britney Spears, who has degraded the whole thing into a circus act. Last time I checked,

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I RUN OUT OF SHIT TO PUT IN VOICES:

WORDINTHEHERD Overhear anything outrageous? Swing by 2C.10 or drop us a line at theplant@graffiti.net to fill us in.

Whatʼs the last book you read? “Watchmen.” Steve T. – Third Semester – Commerce You read the most overrated graphic novel of all time? Listen, Iʼll be honest; it was good, but it wasnʼt the greatest. In fact, the only thing I really truly loved about it was Ozymandias: quite possibly the most intense villain ever created, after The Governer from The Walking Dead that is. Seriously, read The Walking Dead. You will shit.

“Of Mice and Men... for the second time.” Kush K. – Third Semester – Commerce Iʼm surprised. I was expecting all the responses to be along the lines of “Uhhhh... Twilight?” The book youʼve mentioned is one Iʼve been trying to get around to reading for quite some time now. Some of my friends have read it and cried, which tells me the book should be well worth the read. The last book that made cry was A Tale of Two Cities. My dick is huge. Seriously, itʼs massive. Iʼm not lying. Big and brown. So big that Hershey came along and said, “Oh Henry!” Honest.

the plant

“I donʼt read, so I canʼt answer your question.” Kevin S. – Third Semester – Pure and Applied Sciences I was waiting for you. You do know that when I formulate these questions, and send all the little Plant rats out to do my dirty work, Iʼm expecting responses exactly like yours. Why donʼt you read? Is it because you have the misfortune of being illiterate? Or is it because you think itʼs uncool? I mean, you are in Sciences, so some part of you has to be smart, right? Wait, who am I kidding? Dawson kids arenʼt smart. Holy shit, I almost slipped up there.

+ EDITOR RESPONSES

“I may be an idiot, but at least I'm not illiterate like people from the Plant. I read The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins.” Saskia (not Saskie) T. – Third Semester – Social Sciences Blame the writers at The Plant for having shit writing. And that book sounds fucking pretentious. Arenʼt you supposed to be reading Twilight like every other problematic teenager in this school? P.S. I wanna read that one, is it any good?

“I just finished reading the last book of the Twilight series.” Jessica T. – Third Semester – Health Sciences You know how I said I was waiting for the last guy? I lied. I was actually waiting for you. So I could tear that shit series you read apart. Fuck Twilight. Fuck Stephenie Meyer. Fuck anything that she will ever write in the near future. Anne Rice spits on her. All novelists spit on her.

READ THE FOLLOWING BEFORE YOU DIE: Foundation Trilogy, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Dawson Athlete of the Week

Blues Goaltender Joanie Plamondon

the plant

The recipient of this weekʼs award goes to Joanie Plamondon, a goaltender on the Dawson womenʼs hockey team. The third semester Social Science student played a vital role in Dawsonʼs shootout victory over the Saint-Jerôme Cheminots, making several key saves during regulation and overtime and stopping all six shots she faced during the game-deciding shootout. This marked the second consecutive shootout in which she accomplished this feat. Her strong play has been one of the reasons for the Bluesʼ recent success.

I started editing my section last night and thought I had it all done. Wrong.

Nothing was done; I had only managed to edit a couple of big columns, one took longer than it should
