Considering the design subject and the site’s vicinity to the institute of oncology’s building, the final volume is the result of a bionic design with its initial pattern to be proportions of human lung combined with organic patterns of bronchus which altogether make the exterior

Designing a place for the lung cancer community of Krakow pushed us to see the subject beyond the ordinary facility! Bionic architecture especially in the middle of classic architecture zone was chosen as a response not only to address the basic needs of the community but also as a mind catching means of increasing lung cancer rate in Krakow among public and the urge for preventive acts.

Eco Friendly Architecture

Designed beside the medical center as a wooden laying area accompanied with Eco friendly brushed steel statues metaphorically implies the reflexive character of nature, reminding that we are treated how we treat the nature! It simply raises the public awareness of diseases caused by polluted air which is an issue in Krakow!

There are benefits from Eco friendly architecture to reduce the air pollution through the design by preserving the trees and increasing the green area or through the technology like in exterior skin, using TiO2 photocatalytic cement-based tiles in pavements, photovoltaic transparent glass panels and UTEC air-purifying billboards in different spots of this site.

Geometric Pattern of Site:

To preserve the existing trees of site on one hand and to harmonize yet emphasize the new designed building, we propose an integrated geometry of paths and green patches. This pattern was initially inspired from the shape of joined soap bubbles as bonding paradigm and elaborated to provide one-point perspective towards the Oxygen Home as the main subject from top view as the fifth elevation.

The Concept of Volume

was evolved from sitting posture of a visitor on the edge infulenced by the windflow which is a chracter of the landscape.

From a particular point of view, nature acts an ancient cyclic process and should be appreciated as such. The slightest forced change in environment can inflict damaging imbalance on it and disrupt this integrity. In this design, we have tried to i clude all different expectations of visitors and combine it with the untouched nature of the site to make the volume and the environment as an eye-catching harmony

3-Star Hotel

As the final design project in my undergraduate studies, with good potential of tourism in my town, I decided to pick a resort site from the Land Use Policy map of the city council to design a three-star hotel. There has not be adequate attention to the high potential of tourism industry in my hometown and for one thing it is suffering from the lack of proper tourist facilities. Measures like building hotels and other resort facilities will help boost the industry and indeed play a big role to minimize the unemployment rate.

Concept Story

started from an observation of a natural phenomenon, inspired by the water waves formed by hits of rain drops! The rain drop and water waves represent the location as the ‘‘city of rain’’ and the nearby lake respectively.

The end result fullfilled the needs of a hotel and gained the maximum benefit of site analysis.

Selected site is a complex of old buildings and unused lands designated within resort division in the Land Use Policy map, city council of Rasht. It is neighbored with the lake and park in south, boulevard in east, and building blocks in west and north. It is located in the entrance of city, enjoying a pleasant view of the lake and park.

The setback levels (stepped terraces) of south side rooms provides vista towards the pleasant landscape of lake and park yet evokes the shape of water waves from top view. As for the lack of public view for the northern small block, I found ceremony hall and shops the best choices in this block. The center reverse half-cone, as the main functional core of hotel, joints the side blocks. The car access by the main road and pedestrian access by the road beside the lake are the optimal choices boosting the performance and efficiency of the hotel.

The volume Concept

Was fundementaly developed based on the combination of two elements; efficiency and identity. Both were respectively fullfiled by linear forms to address the suitability of plans and adding a transparent icon to boost the public use of building.

The design subject of this course was a local library and the site was chosen by the course coordinator from the cultural part of the Land Use Policy map of the town. What makes this site more suitable is the easy access from the town center and the reasonable distance from the nearest library The site is located beside the mid-level density residential division mostly neighbored by commercial and residential functionalities. It has been an unused land for a long time awaiting to be considered by city council’s decision makers Due to vehicle access prohibition, as applied by town’s traffic regulations, in south side, I placed the pedestrian access with a small setback from the sidewalk. Instead, placement of the car accesses from north-east was the best solution as it has less traffic and also provides the ideal space for the parking lot. The library volume has been set in the center with a reasonable distance from all directions.

Main focus of the project We were encouraged by the course tutors to get familiar with different material technologies and their appropriate uses. Application of glass maximizes the use of natural light and reduces electricity usage during daylight. The glass panel’s installation technology with different spider fittings was researched. The chosen glass material consists of three layers with PVB as the middle layer which prevents the penetration of UV and overheating issue consequently.

Also the industrial installation of red brick and roofing tile as the vernacular architectural symbols were studied. Some other building technology like slide door and light partition were studied as well.

B The purpose of design was to create a democratic space for a natural environment which could be connected with various cultural and intellectual levels.On one hand, we tried to create a hierarchy for the courtyard (Sehan) and the access from Rood valley and also at the same time to make a special and dominant geometry in front of the temple, expanding it towards the Rood valley. On the other hand, we tried to make a kind of contrast in design of this complex. In other words, there was a dichotomy approach in designing the landscape of Rood valley and the temple with its courtyard (sehan).

Shape of library building, very much like a joint, connects the soft and curve lines of Rood valley and the terracing in front of temple. Its curved facade represents integration with the surrounding environment.

In plan, broken lines of library is a response to the flooring of courtyard (sehan).

Temple and its Courtyard (Sehan) The center element of Rood valley is an abstracted form of Tulip flower, representing the martyrizing and anonymous martyrs buried in the courtyard (sehan) of temple. It is situated exactly in the axle of Terracing along courtyard sehan).This element like a sign helps the legibility of the complex.

Excavation in some areas of Rood val- Terracing represent the hierarchy of design. Terley for creating organic forms of pools races with various slopes and vanishing points are and presence of water simultaneously the main causes for dynamism and mobility. in dynamic shape (river) and static one (pools) cause refinement of Rood valley environment.

Ramps ‘angles have been set up purposefully to situate the last ramp along the temple’s mihrab (Muslim’s worship direction).

Concentric lines applied in the courtyard (sehan) represent unity yet multiplicity. The courtyard as a stairway, not only adopts with the natural slope but also emphasizes on hierarchy. In addition, this geometry saves the existed trees of the terrain.

Placemaking

Placemaking is a public-based approach in planning, designing, and improving public spaces which lets people to form the spaces aligned with their aspirations and needs; a process to transform spaces to places!

Anzali Boulevard, a historical coastal promenade in southern coast of Caspian Sea in Iran, has been facing issues such as safety resulted from the lack of people-oriented development plans. Placemaking toolkit (provided by PPS-Projects for Public Spaces, the field-leading organization) was adopted and used as the frame for the solution phase of this research only for addressing the safety but also to improve all the quadruple criteria of Place Diagram. The core of research was mainly carried by conducting a public workshop to offer the proposals for turning the boulevard to a more multi-functional destination with diverse activities of places (Figure down). Some Placemaking tools were used in this process such as; Power of 10+, Place Performance Evaluation Game, LQC and Digital Placemaking.

Conflict and Potential maps (Figure above), as a summary of all evaluation techniques were provided to illustrate the most potential spaces to work in Placemaking workshop. The visualized spaces have a variety of potentials and conflicts respectively in green and red arrows. In other words, for each place, there are a state of present (red arrow) and possible future (green arrow) if the proper strategies take into actions. The diversity of land uses and inclusiveness of locations were the main criteria in selecting process. Among all proposed spaces, five of them in boulevard and one as the nearby breakwater were chosen to work on.

The proposals generated through the workshop process emphasized the power of Placemaking to discover the potential of boulevard, the link between activity and sense of attachment to boost the quality and ensure the safety of places. The diverse multifunctional ideas visualized in proposals for each space draw the importance of such people-centered approach on public spaces’ functions for further researches. To make the proposals easy to understand for public, the Digital Collage technique has been purposefully employed to turn ideas to before & after transformations. This visualization of ideas was actually found to be the most suitable replacement for the ‘‘implementation stage of short-term ideas’’ in terms of clearness and discernibility for public to obtain their feedback.

Revitalizing Sarjevo University Campus

Sarajevo University Campus was originally adopted from a military barracks in 2006. A high potential of development for the campus is existing as it looks an unsolved piece of puzzle in the urban context at the moment.

This multi-disciplinary project with the main emphasis on the role of open space started from a 10 day workshop on-site with some Bosnia’s unis. We tried to come up with ideas which could serve both the campus and the urban context in a bigger scale.

Findings from analysis in various categories proved that the campus is suffering from the lack of some essential attributes like connectivity, accessibility, readability, identity and inviting public spaces. A wider look to the surrounding revealed that this site can be the missing ring of a connection chain from hilltop landscape in north to the riverside in south. Furthermore, for convenient access to the campus suitable design of cross walks and street surfaces should be applied. Behavior map confirmed the confusing inner path network plus the unfair distribution of facilities made socializing spots limited. Generally people avoid entering the paths which are not easy to read and follow. From the field observation, it was clearly perceived that there is no motivation to invite public to enter the campus than having a shortcut to the train and bus stations. All in all, this campus is a good proof of a fact that changing the function solely cannot guarantee making a new identity. This explains the dominated militarily atmosphere in campus.

The Design Concept is based on fulfilling the needs of the campus resulted from the analysis. Conceptually, we took into account the existing spatial pattern of open spaces and built structures in the campus (rectangular frames) because applying a different pattern could end the concept to be less functional as an inevitable consequence. In other words we proposed to have sequential rectangular frames with different sizes and levels of privacy suitable for both public and students. These spaces are connected by proper readable paths which provide choices for users. Central frame would boost the polar interaction between west and east side of the site while serving the surrounding buildings. Furthermore, this space accompanied with the flexible meeting space in front of library (view 8) and water feature in west (view 5) can optimize the inviting character of the campus by improved walkability criteria regardless of the entry to pass through.
