I am passionate about design. I care about how design works and how it can work better. And I love fixing things in a creative way. I believe I do it best when I need to use problem solving and creative thinking skills. I try to look at things from a different perspective, and I am happy when I need to fiddle with small detail(s). I strive to make that bit of a difference. It comes from within me. My background in architecture is a foundation which gives me that ability to approach design problems in a different way and think visually while taking into account many contributing factors. My inspiration comes from different things and different places; it generally depends on a project. As each project is unique, it is inspiring in itself. Blank piece of paper is where all possibilities lie. Sketching is the tool to open up at least some of those possibilities, which I use before I turn to computer. Software tools, in my opinion are great for refining design. The range of my work keeps broadening as design is continuous. Hope you will enjoy looking through some of my independent work. Monika Olanrewaju

Flyer design - “Now Delivering” for “Chill In” Off License

Tools used:

After receiving original flyer in a post, that aimed to promote additional delivery services, I decided to challenge myself and try out some of my ideas. After completing these two options displayed I received their positive feedback. That business then asked me to volunteer for their poster design (see opposite page).

I successfully initiated this project after researching local business’ need for better marketing. After receiving my three layout options, client chose the one on the very left. I am delighted I took on the challenge and was able to achieve a high quality, great resolution

Flyer design - Caramelita I have picked this project from one of Graphic Design books. The assignment was to design a postcard flyer 4 X 6 for a new coffee shop beverage. I have come up with an idea to combine two images that would look like coffee-beverage is giving the flavour to the logo of that coffee shop. I aimed to achieve clean look, with one image as focal point that would catch the eye and deliver the message before the viewer read the text.

Album artwork–Ashlee Simpson–Autobiography

Tools used: Collage Adobe Photoshop

This project came from my general interest in music. That year when Ashlee Simpson’s album was released I set to find out if I could re–design a CD cover instead of starting from scratch. Challenge for me was to translate a feel of music and a bit of personality of the artist into graphics. Because I thought that the music on this record resembles rock with the pop touch, I tried to achieve that feel on the album cover through rough image texture and soft layout.

CD album artwork –Monikita- Best Friend I designed this artwork for a single called “Best Friend” back in 2003, which was a personal record. For this reason I chose to use collage technique by cutting out some images from different magazines. I chose images that could reflect strength and friability at the same time and also give an edge to the whole look of the cover. The preliminary design was in shades of soft purple, the end product was chosen to be greyscale with gold effect on artist’s name and on the song title.

Branding-YD- Yemisi Design

Tools used: Personal camera Adobe Photoshop Sketchbook

This was one of my independent projects in 2009, when I received a lovely collection of beaded necklaces, earrings, bracelets and sets of them from my sister-in-law. I was inspired by their unique look and so I came up with an idea to create a brand, which included a logo, product brochure and business card. I tried to achieve a taste of sophistication and luxury. By combining soft, solid and simple components into the logo I wanted to contradict the dramatic and vibrant product designs. I also took, edited photographs and wrote the copy for preliminary product brochure.

Booklet design- HSE- Looking after your child’s teeth 0-8 years I got inspired by the original HSE booklet content. Because of my strong interest in graphic design I decided to challenge myself and see what I could do if I was given a project like that. I chose different images from internet after researching the subject further and aimed for layout working in concert.

That led me to editing the copy by adding some more in depth information and some additional information too. On this page you can see the original copies of front and back cover of the booklet that inspired this project. My aim with the cover was to try reflecting what the content is meant to reachaudience. I wanted to unify the layout inside, but make it playful at the same time. For the same later reason I chose vibrant colours and explored illustration for table of content and page for personal notes.

Brochure design- Music Room Reflections- Tri fold I had a great opportunity to design a brochure for Music Room Reflections. The client wanted to include a short description about them, about their previous concerts and the venues where those concerts were held. There was a lot of information for this tri-fold brochure to contain. I took idea for the look from Music Room Reflections (www. musicroomreflections.com) website and created a playful design, trying to stay precise to their feel too. I had few design options and client chose the one shown here.

Inspiration for image arrangement on the front came from the logo. As it is a logo for music reflections I tried to imitate that the photographs are reflected inside the logo. The reason was to draw attention and importance to the logo’s meaning. The challenge was to fit quite a bit amount of text. All information was important and I tried to avoid over crowding the brochure. In order to do that I played with text arrangement and achieved an interesting result.

Brochure design- Music Room Reflections- Gate fold This project is the following one for Music Room Reflections, after a successful tri-fold brochure design. This time my client chose gate - fold layout option. I used the colours that client liked most and this option was the favourite one. Images were supplied as photographs and I enjoyed combining some of them together to achieve the end look. This brochure was presented to arrange more concerts in potential venue at Powerscourt House- as a tool to demonstrate previous successes.

Inside layout of this brochure was influenced by the way it folds. And it suited well to arrange information about four previous concert venues. Copy was supplied by the client and I was asked to check if there was anything that could be added or edited. By selecting Garamond Small Caps typeface I gained the feel that my client was looking for.

Packaging design- Cat Food Packaging Labels I came up with this project out of interest to use some of my sketches. So that one sketch, see opposite page, set the theme and that theme of animals I thought can be used for pet food packaging. I opted for a natural feel that is now associated with eco design and eco packaging. After online research and analysing retail shop shelves, I noticed that there are mostly photographs of pets being used to draw the buyer’s eye. My aim of blending a sketch and card box was to achieve raw and natural feel and that way help this packaging stand out from the mass.

Here is the sketch that inspired this project and an image of how it was applied to create a label. On the following pages of my portfolio you will see more of the sketches hand drawn by me to complete the packaging label set. I designed different graphic line arrangements to bring raw elements together and also reflect the feel of content’s intent, based on pets’ age, i.e.active=curvy line; junior=jumpy and joining together line; senior=more calm and content line; in-house=line that creates a “box”. I chose label names according to what is on the market and not to confuse the user.

Newsletter design- C.E.T.N.S. I volunteered to local school in Dublin, Ireland. I initiated this collaboration with the principal, who provided images and text. The fonts were specified, reasoning that certain letter shapes help pupils stay consistent in their learning process. I drew inspiration for the colour scheme from the school’s logo. I consistently offered various options to choose from and occasionally edited the copy.

Logo re-design–Just Chillin’ I was asked to keep the colors and illustration of previous logo. The focus was on keeping the same feel and only adding a word to original brand. It was a challenge to carry so many elements over and achieve original and thoughtful result. Sketchbook was my main tool in this project and I used Illustrator to refine my hand drawings. After many explorations, my client was happy with the logo displayed on the page.

Tools used:

Corporate flyers–part of marketing collateral

Adobe InDesign Adobe Photoshop Sketchbook

After completing new logo, I explored how it will be used as part of marketing collateral, which included me writing a copy. These flyers give a good idea that my client aimed to reach a wider audience with the whole re–branding project.
