About

Hi, my name is Maarten Abe Nijenhuis. I am 31 years old and currently finished my Master’s in Architecture at the TU Delft. This is why I want to become an architect: Being born in Brazil and raised in the Netherlands I acquired a perspective that goes beyond borders.

After I had started studying medicine, I came to realize that I wanted to improve our human wellbeing by shaping our physical surroundings. Switching my studies to architecture provided this opportunity.

I get excited by the search for a relevant architectural design which enables not only higher comfort in human life but also sustainably contributes to a project’s environment.

I purposely tune in to our surroundings to find out how we become influenced by them in our daily lives. It is important to me to know how they can be used in a functional and relevant design.

The project aims to unify the cultural interests of Rotterdam and the neighborhood of Feijenoord and in doing so increase levels of education, health and all dimensions of one’s well-being. The project is synthesized by the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, Rotterdam’s sustainable ambitions and the needs of the population of Feijenoord. Situated on the Varkenoordse Park, the Performing Arts Academy aspires to encourage the district’s challenged population to flourish on their own terms. The varying contextual atmospheres, the challenged residential neighborhood, heavy traffic along the railway, traffic flows and the promising park ambience were taken into account for studies on form and public access. The design envisions providing an urban oasis; an inclusive breeding ground for the whole city. Therefore the building stands as a landmark of wholeness that reads as one volume and by the continuous rhythm of its façade. As a result, the local access routes to public and collective programs are distributed in circular directions. Learning from school typologies, safety and accessibility were central to the concept. Two central cores around the interior park distribute the public. Safety and visibility of learning activities and facilitating spontaneous art experimentation drive how the building is configured in its context.

To strengthen the effect on mental health and experience the natural conditions, the user’s biophilic experience is enhanced by inviting the existing body of water and trees Into the building so that they become part of the interior spaces. Also the park seems to continue as unobstructed space by lifting and penetrating the building’s mass, so that art events and vegetation growth can take place.

Public programs for art experimentation and public showcasing on the ground floor tend to art enthusiasts, while areas for education and social encounters are distributed as modifiable learning zones on the first floor. Classrooms and rehearsal rooms along the 1st floor façade share the same large dimensions for a flexible infill of potential art experimentation. Due to its own courtyard, the kindergarten has a more private character. Combined with its proximity to the petting zoo the kindergarten serves as a safe haven for the city’s younger families.The structural strategy intends to create a light and balanced impression. Large steel trusses finished with laminated veneer lumber span 24 meters in a formal grid to create noble spaces that host intimate studying and public art learning and showcasing.

Trees and light are invited through large opening in the floor and roof for fully optimized park experiences.

When the location for the project on the island of Terschelling was chosen, the project had to balance the notion of on the one hand a visible and recognizable object while also being a non-intrusive intervention on the other hand. Lucid Haze functions both as a shelter and a laboratory for scientists researching the biodiverse island of Terschelling. The island’s constantly changing condition is experienced as a misty dream, far away from real life. The question how to create non-intrusive, rural architecture was explored through modelmaking and activities to understand the poetics of space.

The project aims to awaken the individual’s consciousness and prompt the generation of ideas with the use of contrasting experience of space. The uniqueness of Terschelling’s environment is celebrated by activating the user’s perception of the landscape with the configuration of the building.

Due to scarce availability and difficulty of acces the material strategy focusses on on-site assembly and possibility of quick modifications. This resulted in the choice for straight-forward, shapes, modular dimensions and light-weight materials. With a desire for simplicity, the building’s technology became durable and sustainable. The energy strategy focusses on passive principles and due to the possibility of placing solar panels on the large roofs, solar energy gains achieve the goal of self-sufficieny.

Therefore, an elevated path shapes the way from the landscape to the scientist’s shelter. The same path organizes a composition of volumes with contrasting heights, sensible structures and reflective, seamingly ethereal material finishes. 3 main activities (work, living, resting) are distributed over the volumes. In doing so, the shelter becomes a place where the users awaken their senses by disconnecting from and relating back to the seasonal changes of the plains of the island.

With wide views to the landscape, the scientists become immersed in the island’s rich environment. The dream tower is a beacon of shelter recognizable from far away and functions as a look-out post too. Lucid Haze provides not merely the function of sheltering research activities but also a place to retreat oneself from the world, dream and awaken new thoughts. Open views provide the background for contemplation and dreaming.

Situated on 2 streets in Elsene, Brussels, a vacant cornerplot stands in the middle of a vibrant and busy urban context. How can a building embrace its context and communicate its interior activities at the same time? With the needs of a vibrant expat area to consider and surrounding buildingstyles coming together on street and eye level, the project aims to be the focus point; a monument for all. The purpose of the project is to serve the various households by offering a layered package of functions. The Bakery for Brussels is a bakery, a take-out, a shared workplace, a home away from home for the international expat community of Elsene.

By commencing with analysis of the neighbouring façades and layering of the project’s façade, the starting point was a fresh experience to my design process. I learned to approach the creation of an intimate, layered urban project by rapidly alternating between detailed façade design, modelmaking and designing interior functions.

The corner shape is the most prominent aspect of the Bakery signifying a gesturing embrace of the context. The groundfloor slopes down around the corner while the starting window height is maintained. As a result, the 1 meter height difference between the two streets becomes less visible.

The accesibility of the ground floor is emphasized by an open view bakery. The interior terrazzo stone continues the hard language from the street pavement, but forms a swirling counter. The kitchen and cafe are separated by a floor to ceiling glass wall to maximize transparency towards the two streets. The kitchen entrance on the lower side distinguishes the main entrance from the supporting functions’ entrance.

Customers can take-away their order or take a seat at the façade bars, bring it upstairs to the restaurant or bring as a snack to the co-working areas. The higher one travels into the building the more informal the spaces become, allowing for a more flexible use of the interior to provide areas for casual business working.

The façade division is a mediating response to the collective eclectic language of the façades in Avenue de la Coronne and Rue de Wery streets. It adopts the use of high levels from the art noveua style in Elsene and proposes the continuation of the contemporary large windows to maximize daylight and urban views.

The main structure consists of a steel skeleton attached to a concrete backwall core and wooden box floorplates to make onubstrocted spaces possible. The varying brick dimensions drive the building’s shape and alignment of interior activities. The façade is open and hosts spaciously lit eating, working and leisure activities. The wooden central sculptural staircase acts as a meeting place. Supportive functions are placed on the southern backwall.

The oven’s chimney is made visible throughout all floors for a homy feel.

Elevations East and West: Natural stone emphasizes the connection of the building’s base to the street and division of the façade. The natural stone bands continue around the bend of the corner but the windows follow the slope of the street down, maintain ing a height of 3 meters. Vertical layered strokes of brick appear to tuck the large windows intimately into niches of the building while also providing shade to the interior and depth to the façade.

The new bridge at the river Rotte, north of Rotterdam‘s center intends to connect the district of Terbregge with Hillegersberg, particularly the Prinsenmolenpark. To add not just a convenient connection between the two river embankments but a destination in itself, the bridge offers opportunities to sunbathe, to swim and to enjoy the views towards the surrounding landscape.

The primary support structure consists of laminated block girders, made out of prefabricated timber elements. Due to its positive climatic impact and its structural logic the timber can be employed as a solid and massive element. The wood protection is mainly guaranteed by the bridge deck itself, which is made out of waterproof prefabricated concrete slabs with carbon fibre reinforcements.

The high percentage of prefabricated modules allows for a swift assembly on site. The platforms, which are integrated in the supports of the bridge, connect the path of the bridge with the water, enabling people to enter the water safely. They are mounted on the primary timber structure with corten steel profiles, juxtaposing the bright timber texture.

By using a long approach and the properties of timber, the bridge achieves a minimal and low visual impact on its surroundings.

Arsenaal 2019 hotel, restaurant, conference centre

During a six month internship at cepezed, a Dutch architecture office located in Delft, I had the pleasure to work on a number of projects but I was mostly involved in the design proposal for an entrance building to Delft’s Arsenaal and the transformation of two offices in The Hague. cepezed’s proposal for the re-design of het Arsenaal into a multi-tenant project comprises of a hotel, museum, conference center and restaurant. As Delft’s former arsenal built in 1602 and today a characteristic national monument, the design goals focus on restoration and future-proof adjustment . The building situates itself on the intersection of Delft’s central canals where a central courtyard connects two larger building volumes. The building’s main entrance on that courtyard connects several exterior and interior flows between the two volumes on different levels. A newly proposed airbridge on the first level of the re-design meant a new staircase had to be introduced, while the façade would become more transparent to experience the historical grandeur of the courtyard.

Here I learned to work closely together within a team and how important it is to maintain a level of input throughout the development of a project. Through sketching and showing multiple rendered options for the entrance building’s façade and interior routing for example, it became easier to make a decision on the connection of the intimate streets of Delft to the Arsenaal’s courtyard and the hotel’s main entrance.

The Arsenaal project was reaching its last phase untill completion. Meeting with the project developer proved how architects are essential for coming up with inspiring ideas and the importance of negotiating mutual interests within the limits of the client’s budget.

The project went onwards while I joined the office’s tender team.

Javastraat and Nassaulaan 2019 office expansion proposal

While the period in the office’s tender team tasks ranged from massing studies to re-designing, re-modelling and diagramming of various projects. The Javastraat and Nassaulaan projects are exemplarary for the way these commissions were approached. Experimentation in Sketchup and fitting designs in Autocad sections and floorplans resulted in a proposal for 2 plots in the historic diplomatic area of the Hague. Two different buildings, located within 350 meters of one another, shared the same aim of expansion on the site and facilitating a multi-tenant use.

At Javastraat the most recent addition to the building would be demolished and a new 1975 m2 3 storey L-shaped volume expansion added, creating a recognizable sloped entrance and central atrium in doing so. At Nassaulaan the main entrance would be replaced by a light, recognisable entrance and the addition of 670 m2, 4 storey box-shaped volume that would be in keeping with the neighbouring building stock.

Also to experience greenery they shared a same language in the façade; one of maximum transparency into the beatiful historical garden. Contemporary corten steel lamellae provide shading and a durable robustness that embeds both buildings into the context.
