Foreword Welcome to the fourth climate change diary! This innovative and informative product is now no longer a babe in arms, but has become a stout toddler. Once again the production team deserves a profound commendation for their excellent work in continuing to communicate the climate change message in a format that allows a broad sweep of topics to be covered. It remains true, as pointed out in last year’s foreword, that the area of climate change is going through significant perception and policy shifts internationally, and strong development nationally in South Africa. The Climate Change Diary is an important reflection of this, and has become even more important as a way to inform and to engage people of all walks of life in this critical environmental issue. After the relative disappointment of the Copenhagen Climate Summit outcome in December 2009, it appeared that international trust has been lost between key nations. The year 2010 therefore saw several significant efforts to rebuild trust and re-establish momentum towards a fair, ambitious and balanced outcome. It was gratifying that much was achieved during a smaller scale and more muted Conference of the Parties took place in December 2010 in Cancun. Cancun outcomes, in retrospect, have built on elements of the Copenhagen Accord that will ultimately direct the world towards a global treaty to ensure a sustainable climate path. Cancun therefore gave some substance to the incomplete political agreement from Copenhagen, and elaborated many details around, for example, new institutions such as an Adaptation Committee and a Green Climate Fund. While the year 2010 saw an unprecedented attack on the science of climate change by some in the media and a range of special interest groups, recent developments in the science have provided further strong evidence that human-caused climate change is both a real and present threat. However, there is also a sea-change in perception starting to occur national and internationally – namely to see climate change responses as a socio-economic opportunity of grand proportions. This spirit is embodied in South Africa’s White Paper on Climate Change Policy published at the end of 2011. This momentous and creative document lays a framework for an effective national response on a range of fronts, and provides many exciting openings for socio-economic development that is both climate-resilient and socially rewarding. I now have no doubt that efforts such as contained in this climate change diary have been contributing to promoting balanced and wellinformed views on the climate change issue, and that we can observe a growing public engagement in this issue. This will be enhanced by promoting a message of optimism, hope and opportunity rather than one of threat and loss. This evolving positive message must inform a majority view nationally and globally that reflects the true nature of the opportunities embodied in climate change responses. Please enjoy, once again, our Climate Change Diary. Dr. Guy F Midgley Chief Director: Climate Change and BioAdaptation
