From the Producing Artistic Director Dear Friends, Thank you for joining us for the world premiere production of When We’re Gone by Alana Jacoby and Scotty Arnold. For those of you who are new to Lyric, welcome!

We’ve been creating theatre right here in Oklahoma City since 1963. Lyric started out as a summer theatre, but now we produce all year-round – both here at the Plaza Theatre and in the summers at the Civic Center Music Hall. When I came to Lyric, over 8 years ago, I wanted to not just re-imagine classic musicals and plays but create new ones that we could send out into the world and add to the canon of musical theatre. In the tradition of “if you build it, they will come,” Lyric’s New Work Initiative has now launched into the world four new musicals that have had productions in San Francisco, New York City and one about to open in London.

With our fifth new work, we are creating something completely different – a pop, punk musical, based on the medieval play, Everyman, set in 1349-plague-ridden London. It may sound like a crazy idea for a musical, but it’s a new work that gives us a lot to think about when trying to navigate our lives in 2018. Great art is often created in times of strife as a way to help us through difficult times. When We’re Gone offers the same four paths to help us find meaning in our lives as those in 1349. By exploring Love, Service (or work), Art and Piety (or religion), the show takes our lead character – and in turn us – on a journey of self-exploration and discovery. It brings to light the fundamental questions of our existence as human beings on this earth. How do we want to live our lives, and what do we want to be remembered for – When We’re Gone? After tonight’s show, you’re invited to share in a discussion with some of the creative team about the production.

From the Creators One of the first things that brought us together as collaborators was a question we share of why we’re drawn to creating musical theater, and how we can be sure it’s the right thing for us to be doing. How can we justify spending our time writing songs when the world is in trouble, and we could instead dedicate our lives to working towards real, tangible change?

So we decided to pit an aspiring artist up against one of the most overwhelming crises in the history of humanity and see what would happen.

Over the eight years we’ve spent developing this piece, our answer to that question of why we do what we do has shifted constantly. We’ve changed as people and as writers with every joy, heartbreak and death we’ve ALANA JACOBY AND SCOTTY ARNOLD experienced; we’ve watched the world ON THE SET OF WHEN WE’RE GONE take overwhelming steps forwards and overwhelming steps back; we’ve seen people hurting in 2018 the same way people hurt in 1349. Every opportunity we’ve had to develop this show has been a chance to explore that question, and we’re so excited to be at a point where we can open it up to an audience and share what we’ve learned so far. If a common thread can link people across all those centuries, maybe it can bring today’s audiences together, too.

He is a founding member of the Musical Theatre Factory, where he has developed That Time We Found A Sasquatch in the Woods (also developed at the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse), Trivøya Gold (lyrics and co-book by Alana Jacoby; also developed at The PiT and NYU Steinhardt) and Extended Stay (also developed at the Winter Park Playhouse). His play Oscar & Richard & Joe was commissioned by The Music Theatre Company of IL and presented in a sold-out concert at Ravinia in 2015. He has completed residencies at Space at Ryder Farm, New York Stage and Film, CAP21, and the Rhinebeck

ALANA JACOBY (Book & Lyrics) is a lyricist and bookwriter living in Brooklyn, New York. She is thrilled to be premiering her first musical at Lyric. In addition to When We’re Gone, she has written the book and lyrics for Trivøya Gold, also with composer Scotty Arnold. Originally from Newtown, CT, she graduated from Brown University with honors in playwriting, and from New York University’s Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program. She has developed work with the National Alliance for Musical Theatre,

the Yale Institute for Music Theatre, and the Musical Theatre Factory, and her songs have been performed at Joe’s Pub, Ars Nova, and the Barrington Stage Company. She also works as a lighting designer, stagehand, teaching artist for the Roundabout Theatre Company, and chess tutor.

ADAM KOCH (Scenic Designer) returns to Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma where he previously designed Disney’s When You Wish, Dreamgirls, Big Fish, Triangle and Tarzan.

Internationally, Adam designed the 2017 production of Dreamgirls in Seoul, South Korea. In Washington D.C., Mr. Koch received Helen Hayes nominations for both Kiss of the Spiderwoman (Signature Theatre) and Bat Boy (1st Stage). Michael has been a theatre grant panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. Michael served as the Associate Director of Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia-winner of the 2009 Regional Theatre Tony Award. Michael received the 2012 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Direction of a Resident Musical in Washington, D.C. for Adventure Theatre’s production of A Year with Frog and Toad, the 2016 Oklahoma Governor’s Arts Award, and a special award from Oklahoma City Mayor’s Committee on Disabilities Concerns. He is a board member for the National Alliance for Musical Theatre.

JIM REYNOLDS (Managing Director) joined Lyric Theatre as Managing Director in 2016.

He has an extensive background in arts management, marketing, public relations, project management, strategic planning and customer service. He comes to Lyric from Austin, Texas, where he was ZACH Theatre’s marketing and public relations director for 25 years.

It was a time of unprecedented growth for ZACH, which is now firmly positioned as Austin’s leading professional theatre. During his tenure, Jim was an integral part of ZACH’s success, responsible for all aspects of marketing, branding, press relations and ticket sales. Jim’s tenure there helped the theatre grow from an annual operating budget of $550,000 to $8,000,000. He created and executed ZACH’s annual subscription and single ticket campaigns, which remain the highest grossing in the organization’s history. Tevyn Hill 1992-2018 Everyone at Lyric Theatre is celebrating the life of Tevyn Hill. His extraordinary talent as a singer, dancer and actor – along with his generous spirit and thousand-watt smile – brought so much joy to everyone here, both on and off the stage. In Lyric’s 2016 production of Dreamgirls, he portrayed the lead singer of Little Albert and the TruTones, inspired by the real-life group, The Temptations.

With his amazing voice and electric dance moves, he got the audience dancing in their seats each night. In 2017, he starred in Disney’s When You Wish, where he delighted audiences as Sebastian from The Little Mermaid with his show-stopping version of “Under the Sea.” Tevyn, just at Lyric, shared his talents and joy with over 20,000 people.

As his director for both shows, I loved working with him each day and will miss him in rehearsals but will never forget the magic he gave us. He was and will always be an inspiration to everyone who knew him. In honor of his life, we are dedicating this production, the world premiere musical When We’re Gone, to Tevyn. We love you, and we will miss you, Tevyn, but your spirit will continue to live on with each performance at Lyric.
