Take Advantage of Preventive Screenings Taking advantage of opportunities for preventive health screenings can prove a large help in detecting health issues and catching them early on. Your Hospital’s Imaging department features several preventive screenings that can clear a path on your way to better health. You must meet certain criteria beforehand for most screenings, although a doctor’s order is not required. Focus 10+: This screening is all-inclusive and screens for more than 10 risk factors such as: abdominal aneurysm, basic metabolic profile, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, lipid (cholesterol) panel, osteoporosis, stroke risk, thyroid function and more. For this screening, patients receive a blood test, ultrasound test and more. The Focus 10+ screening costs $179. Valid throughout the year. Lung scan: The best chance of beating lung cancer is to find it early when treatment options are available. DCMH offers a low-dose radiation CT scan for individuals with a significant history of tobacco use. It is recommended for both men and women who are current/former smokers and are 55-75 years of age. Other specific criteria must be met in order to qualify for this screening. A lung scan costs $69. Heart scan: This noninvasive procedure utilizes our low-dose radiation CT scanner to check for calcium buildup in your arteries. The heart scan is used to look for calcium deposits in your coronary arteries that can narrow your arteries and increase your risk for a heart attack. These scans are recommended for males 45 years or older and females 55 years or older. Other criteria must be met before the scan. A heart scan costs $69. Digital mammogram: Annual screening mammograms are recommended for women over the age of 40 and sometimes sooner depending on medical history. Mammograms can be a vital step in detecting breast cancer early. The Hospital Foundation of Decatur County has thankfully funded a Mammography Assistance Program, available to help those who qualify receive a mammogram and diagnostic procedures at no cost.

To schedule an appointment for any of the preventive screenings listed above or to see if you meet certain criteria, call (812) 663-1157. No doctor’s order is required.

PATIENT TESTIMONIAL My Mom Chose the Hospital Where She Knew People and Felt Safe Mary Giesting and her mother, Anne Schmidt, both natives of Greensburg, are no strangers to Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH). Having been born at DCMH and back for care as a senior in high school, Mary remembers growing up in the small town of Greensburg and constantly compares it to her life now in Plainfield, Indiana. Mary’s mother, Anne, who still resides in Greensburg, was recently informed after a routine mammogram that there was a lump in her breast. As the decision lingered regarding where Anne would have her lumpectomy, Mary went back and forth with her mother comparing hospitals all over Indianapolis. Anne was adamant that she have the procedure done at DCMH. Mary, on the other hand, not so much. Mary attempted to convince her mom that great care and high-quality service only resides in much larger, metropolitan-area hospitals. While Anne let her daughter state her points, she finally reminded Mary that it was about more than that. Anne explained that DCMH is a top hospital, with experienced physicians, highly skilled staff and even more important, a place where she knew the people caring for her. A place where she could feel safe and close to home. After much debate, Anne and Mary chose DCMH to have the surgery. As they arrived

at the hospital, Mary was pleasantly surprised. A lot has changed since she was at the hospital last. She walked her mother into a newly remodeled Breast Health Suite, where she was greeted by the Mammography Technician, Carol Blasdel, who has worked at DCMH for over 35 years. She was pleased to see such a clean environment, encounter such friendly staff and to notice that everyone’s schedule revolved around her mom’s best interests, versus that of their own. Prior to the procedure, Mary felt very included in her mom’s care. Mary explained how the staff made sure both of them knew what would happen. “Mom’s surgeon, Dr. Albers, was very thorough. He articulated everything so well and neither of us felt hurried. I felt comfortable asking as many questions as I needed to,” Mary said. Following Anne’s surgery, Mary then explained how impressed she was with the hospital’s Nurse Navigator, Jeanna Nobbe. Mary wasn’t aware that the service existed, but a phone call from Jeanna postsurgery to help her mom schedule follow-up appointments, arrange for rides to and from radiation and so on, proved to Mary that her mom’s decision truly was the better one. Mary went on to say, “My mom was right. Receiving this type of care from people

It brought down the level of anxiety for my mom and that energy was used to heal.” “When I compare this to my father’s stay at another hospital … he was so anxious. He didn’t know the people caring for him, and not to mention the long drive from home,” she added. Anne and Mary left the hospital feeling more reassured than ever that the decision they made that day was the right one. Mary felt so passionate about the environment, staff and ease of care that she even called a member of the hospital Board of Trustees later that evening to thank him. “This care would not have been the same elsewhere,” she thought, “and not only did DCMH meet both of our expectations, they exceeded mine by a long shot.”

Signing up for Insurance on the Marketplace? When it comes to choosing a healthcare plan that’s right for you and your family, it can be a confusing and daunting task. If you are not offered insurance by your current employer, you may be looking at options like the Health Insurance Marketplace, which was created as a result of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). When choosing a plan, a variety of questions may arise before selecting one: What plans does my healthcare provider accept? Where can I go if I get hurt? What is the best and most affordable option for me and my family? When selecting a plan and getting started, there are several steps to keep in mind:

Individuals or families who are already insured by their current employer do not need to sign up for coverage on the Health Insurance Marketplace. Uninsured individuals who choose to forgo the process of signing up and choosing a healthcare plan will be required to pay a penalty fee according to the Affordable Care Act. The fee for not having health coverage is calculated one of two ways. If you or your dependents don’t have insurance that qualifies as minimal essential coverage, you’ll pay either a percentage of your household income or a flat fee, whichever is higher.

Open enrollment is open until February 15, 2015.

If you don’t have coverage in 2015, you’ll pay the higher of these two amounts:

If you enrolled last year, re-enroll to see whether you qualify for lower cost premiums that may better fit your needs and budget for the new year.

• Two percent of your yearly household income. (Only the amount of income above the tax filing threshold, about $10,000 for an individual, is used to calculate the penalty.) • $325 per person for the year ($162.50 per child under 18). The maximum penalty per family using this method is $975.

Follow up with your local healthcare provider and physicians and find out what plans they accept. Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) currently accepts Anthem Pathway, UnitedHealthcare Choice, Assurant Health and locally based SIHO plans, on the Marketplace. Go to www.healthcare.gov and navigate/review your options available. Should you need assistance signing up, you may contact a local insurance agent to get started.

The penalty increases every year. In 2016 it will be 2.5 percent of your income or $695 per person. After that, it’s adjusted for inflation. The Health Insurance Marketplace is the best choice available for people who are uninsured and might qualify for subsidies. Upon finding networks supported by your local healthcare providers, the confusion narrows and healthcare becomes much more attainable.
