BEHIND THE BLINDS

ADAPTIVE REUSE TIMESCAPES A historic railway station from the early days of Singapore, Tanjong Pagar Railway Station served as an important transport and commerce hub. No longer in use and having been gazetted as a national monument, this project explores the adaptive reuse of the iconic station.

an exterior pavilion, the evolution of transport is put on display. made from white steel fins and stem from an abstraction of the station and creating a mysterious journey for users. The pure white material the displayed transport artefacts at key locations, engaging the use to reveal the history of Singapore through a casual journey into TPRS.

ADAPTIVE REUSE TIMESCAPES The inner hall of the station holds a large central pavilion that contains another two forms of artefacts. At the lowest level of the pavillion, transport-related commuter items are put on display.

Pepper’s Ghost is used to create holograms of old relics alongside their replacements. This juxtaposition engages differing mediums to reveal the evolution of comm ters and their memories.

Moving up, historical movies are retold in a few curated frames that are stitched together and wrapped around the interior chamber of the pavilion.

The coloured panels reveal the movie frames when the interior lights change colour, engaging periodic lighting to reveal the station’s importance in relation to the larger context.

Constructed from the same steel fins as the exterior pavilion, the design language makes for a complete journey through the timescapes of Singapore, all nested within one of the most historic and iconic relics of her past.

Activities node

Kallang is a very charged region of Singapore, with several transport and activity nodes for people of diverse backgrounds. The Urban Forest imagines a livework housing typology that is nested within lush forested conditions, creating thermally comfortable zones that foster interaction and commercial activities.

Beginning with a master plan that was collectively designed as a studio, the precinct was split into multiple potential housing plots. Each plot was tackled as a pair, with The Urban Forest being sited at the northern corner of the precinct. Working from master planning down to unit plan scales, the project aims to invent unique living configurations that can allow residents to operate home businesses, a phenomenon that has arisen due to Covid-19.

Greenery is employed as a medium to engage with the greater site context. The addition of a green deck over the precinct creates opportunities housing bands, of which we see the potential for an agriculture ‘zone’. Moving downwards, the flora attempts to enrich the ecological diversity of the site by connecting the waterfront to the adjacent land parcels. Greenery is then employed as a buffer to mitigate noise from the KPE and Nicoll Highway. Looping back into the heart of the precinct, a network of green pathways invites residents into the central activity space. The historic site is transformed into a series of parks and leisure zones that can be enjoyed by residents in a variety of ways.

The studio master plan required integration between many networks, such as water, greenery, pedestrian, public spaces, vehicular and more. The elevated deck branches out to adjacent regions to improve connectivity between the precinct and the multitude of activities and transport nodes around. Of the master plan, my project focused on the Green Network.

Green Network Layer
