MAKING NEW STRIDES IN THE EXCEPTIONAL ZULU KINGDOM IN 2019 An exciting year lies ahead if you are considering making a shot left to the delightful and energetic province of KwaZulu-Natal. We herald the first issue of the New Year conveying our most heartfelt and warmest greetings to all our wonderful readers, and wish everyone a prosperous and successful 2019. I am glad to report that the province experienced yet another very successful festive season, and for that I would also like to extend my appreciation to the tourism trade which always ensures our holidaymakers continue to receive great service when visiting us. Furthermore, a big “thank you” goes to the people of KZN for being exceptional hosts and continuing to share their warmth with our visitors year after year. The tourism sector continues to thrive because each one of us plays a vital role in positioning KZN as the must-visit tourism destination. Looking forward, 2019 promises to be another action-packed year. Exciting major crowd-pulling events will continue to be a key contributor to the economy of the province, and there is already a full calendar of events lined up. We are already preparing to welcome thousands of sporting enthusiasts from all over the country for the AQUELLE MIDMAR MILE from 09-10 February, followed by the FNB DUSI CANOE MARATHON from 14-16 February. As always, we would encourage all participants and their supporters to explore some of the fascinating tourist attractions in the areas surrounding the locations where these two signature events are held. We are also going to be supporting even more events around KZN to encourage more people to travel to the hidden gems and the less visited parts of KZN and to unearth the tourism potential of some of the rural areas of the province. Be on the lookout for these exciting new events on our website and social media pages. We’re already into February, which has become synonymous with romance, so there is no better place to spend Valentine’s Day with your loved one, than enjoying a romantic weekend getaway for two in one of our magnificent and special spots in KZN.
We therefore encourage you to “DO ROMANCE” in KZN and create life-long memories with your loved one. This year, we will continue with our successful “Do KZN” domestic campaign to encourage people to explore the delights of the region. This microsite on our website has made things much easier for you to book your next holiday in KZN. We continue to put together different tailor-made packages to suit the various lifestyles and needs of our travellers. This new route is proving exceptionally popular and perhaps, one day, the flights will become daily. This year, we are looking forward to striking more deals with our international partners to ensure that the KZN flag flies even higher in the global arena. The Human Rights Day holiday on 21 March, which falls in the middle of the week, will also give you another chance to take a long break in the Zulu Kingdom. ANOTHER EPIC MAIN STAGE LINE-UP SPLASHY FEN CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF GOOD TIMES! aster 2019 will be Splashy Fen Music Festival’s 30th Edition, and what better way to get the major celebrations underway than with the release of a starstudded local and international main stage line-up. This week, Festival organisers Stu Berry and Andrew van Rensburg of Impi Concept Events, took to the stage at an intimate launch party in Durban to announce the exciting Main Stage line-up for the 2019 Festival. Streaming live to their social media channels, the team revealed the first 11 acts – consisting of both international and local musicians - who will take to the Splashy Fen Main Stage across the 4-day music festival. MAIN STAGE American rock band Wheatus will be making their debut in South Africa, along with musical magician Youngr from England and one-man band from Australia Kim Churchill. With a well-planned mix of eclectic folk jazz, electro pop melodies and good old American punk rock, it’s a line-up that has something for everyone. And we’re only just getting started! With just over three months to go until the 30th edition of South Africa’s friendliest festival kicks off in the beautiful rolling hills of Underberg, preparations are well under way for another fun-filled experience for one and all. JEREMY LOOPS - From cult live act status in his hometown Cape Town, to a chart-topping album domestically, and a number of world tours; Jeremy Loops is nothing short of a world-class international artist. And he’ll be back at Splashy Fen this year, with his foot-stomping, beat boxing, looping antics… and fans can’t wait.

AQUELLÉ MIDMAR MILE: 9- 10 FEBRUARY 2019 As excitement for the 2019 aQuellé Midmar Mile builds, whether its backstroke, breast stroke or even doggy paddle, all are welcome at the Midmar Mile. This annual gathering acknowledged by Guinness World Records as the largest open water swim on the planet is a happy, vibrant community event. The Midmar Mile attracts thousands of individuals, from serious international athletes and Olympic medallists to recreational swimmers and disabled swimmers, with everyone out to have fun. The more social swim is for families on the Saturday, and the highlight is the competitive events on the Sunday. FNB DUSI CANOE MARATHON 2019: 14 -16 FEBRUARY 2019 The Dusi Canoe Marathon was founded in 1951, and covers roughly 120km between the cities of Pietermaritzburg and Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. It is the biggest canoeing event on the African continent, and one of the world’s most popular river marathons, attracting between 1600 and 2000 paddlers each year. Summer rains have arrived in the inland regions of KwaZulu-Natal, and levels of rivers should be good when the iconic event takes place. There is far more water in the dam systems at this stage, with Inanda Dam, which was 48 percent full this time last year, at 78 percent capacity. 8

The race starts on the uMsindusi River that runs through Pietermaritzburg and includes a number of weirs and rapids, using water released from Henley Dam. At roughly the halfway point of the race the uMsindusi River meets the far larger uMngeni River and the river becomes more challenging, with some rapids rated Grade 3+, and some of the trickier rapids like Island 2 is portaged by most of the field. Most of the large rapids can be portaged if desired.

The race is unique in that it includes numerous portages where the paddlers carry their craft over hills, either to cut out rapids and cataracts, or to eliminate long loops in the river. Most of these portages are through thick bush on steep and undulating terrain, and several of them are around 4km in length.

LIFE’S A BEACH IN KZN
KWAZULU-NATAL has some of the most spectacular and pristine beaches in the world.
SOUTHPORT BEACH is largely secluded and boasts rock pools and a tidal pool. It’s also a popular snorkelling and scuba diving destination. And whales can often be seen during the latter half of the year.
And some of them have met the most stringent of standards to be awarded internationally-recognised Blue Flag status. A Blue Flag beach is a global symbol of quality and an assurance to visitors that a venue meets a standard of excellence in safety, amenities, cleanliness, environmental information and management. Tourists flock to the province’s beaches in their droves, particularly over the main holiday seasons and long weekends when temperatures soar and the water is warm. “Going to the beach” plays a major role in attracting both domestic and international tourists to the region and for thousands of domestic holiday makers, it has long become a tradition.
UMZIMBE BEACH also has a tidal pool and it too is another good spot for whale-watching.
KZN is also the only coastline with 37 of its beaches equipped with bather safety gear, which is owned and maintained by the KZN Sharks Board Maritime Centre of Excellence. The Sharks Board is the only organisation in South Africa dedicated to providing protection against sharks. HIBBERDENE BEACH is half-way between Scottburgh and Port Shepstone and is another tourist hot-spot.
Lifeguards man the popular beaches and bathers should always follow their advice when they signal warnings about bad conditions to swimmers and paddlers to get out of the waves and return to the shoreline. From north to south, visitors are spoilt for choice. KwaZulu-Natal has nine Blue Flag beaches, with seven located in the Ray Nkonyeni (formerly the Hibiscus Coast) Municipality on the South Coast-which is marketed as “Paradise,” and two in the eThekwini Municipality area.
RAMSGATE BEACH is another magnificent beach with a large tidal pool and a lovely lagoon. It’s ideal for launching ski-boats.
One of the South Coast’s magnificent seven is MARINA BEACH, south of Margate, between the villages of San Lameer and Southbroom and an easy 90-minute drive from Durban.
Then, over in Durban, there is the famous USHAKA BEACH, at the uShaka Marine World, a familyfriendly destination with small waves and plenty to do like surfing and stand-up paddle boarding.
Then, just north of Port Edward is the idyllic TRAFALGAR BEACH where marine life is intriguing to see in its natural habitat. (Don’t forget to take your goggles and snorkel). The beach has also been declared a marine reserve in some parts. It is also close to the Mpanjati Nature Reserve.
Head north and you will come to WESTBROOK BEACH, which is between La Mercy and Ballito, about a 30-minute drive from Umhlanga. It is a peaceful spot and an ideal location for those wanting to escape the buzz of city life.
LUCIEN BEACH is in Margate, at the opposite end of the main beach.

Their mismatched machinations sees ‘the ‘battle of the twits’ moving effortlessly from Rock to Rocky Horror, Boeremusiek to Broadway and Country to Classical, even sharing a masterclass on how not to look sexy on the dance-floor along the way. And hot on their heels, comes Aaron McIlroy, with his latest one-man hit show – ADHD. Join Aaron as he embarks on a wild journey into the fantastical world of learning disorders. This hilarious take on the ‘problems’ of ADHD and other ‘disturbing behavioral patterns’ is charmingly portrayed by this master of character comedy. Many facts and theories are turned on their heads (literally) as we get a bird’s eye view into the chaotic and beautiful mind of Aaron McIlroy, who has lived with this ‘gift’ for the last half century. Perfect for the Easter school holidays: The BFG returns to The Sneddon from 20 – 31 March. Following the sold out success of KickstArt’s July 2018 season, Greg King redirects this enchanting reimagining of Roald Dahl’s children’s classic about the adventures of a, friendly giant, and Sophie, a little orphan he befriends. Featuring quirky puppetry the show stars Bryan Hiles, Belinda Henwood, Clare Mortimer, Daisy Spencer, Straw Nzimande and Lyle Buxton. Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre bookings are through Computicket. DURBAN Durban has always held a special charm for visitors... it offers the buzz of a large metropolitan city, a vibrant mix of cultures, miles of sun-drenched beaches and a wonderfully moderate climate. It’s the perfect place for some ‘summer loving’, with beach walks, sunset cruises and romantic picnics… or for the more adventurous, horseback rides on the beach, helicopter flips or shark cage diving! For ‘shop till you drop’ retail therapy there are several upmarket shopping centres offering brand name shops as well as quirky boutiques - or browse around a flea market to get the local vibe and ferret out a handmade treasure. For some local authenticity and an eclectic cultural vibe pop into the Victoria Street Market with its numerous stalls selling everything from brassware, woven baskets, wooden articles to meat, fish, fruit and vegetables – the main attractions though are the exotic spices imported from India, ideal for making curries. Stroll through the Markets of Warwick – preferably on a guided tour – to experience the world of traditional healers, traders and local food. Be brave and try the tasty delicacy of the meat from a bovine head dipped in salt, or if this is a little too much try Durban’s legendary ‘bunny chow’. After dark Durban is abuzz with elegant lounges, funky taverns and a variety of dining options. Head to Florida Road for a cosmopolitan vibe of street cafes, restaurants, clubs and bars, all set within
a street of carefully preserved historic buildings. If you’re wanting local theatre and live music... Durban has plenty trendy clubs, pubs and discos where you can ‘party ‘till dawn’. For some local flavour, head to one of the township restaurants for live music, shisanyama and a great vibe. Be sure to catch sunrise over the Indian Ocean – enjoy a stroll or hire a bicycle followed by coffee or breakfast at one of the beachside cafes. Durban’s unique experiences are just as varied – go ‘Wet and Wild’ at uShaka Marine World, ride a Richsha along the Golden Mile, experience some of Durban’s important historical sites on the Woza eNanda Heritage Trail, pause awhile for a cup of tea in the historic surroundings of the Mariannhill Monastery… or just kick back and relax as you cruise the harbour barefoot on a catamaran. But whatever you choose, ‘do’ Durban like a true Durbanite!
DID YOU KNOW? The Bunny Chow is a very simple affair consisting of a hollowed-out quarter or half loaf of bread filled with any available curry including beef, mutton, chicken or beans, and is eaten with your fingers. One version of its origin suggests that the Indian labourers that came to work on the sugar plantations of KZN requiring a way to carry their lunch into the fields used a hollowed-out loaf of bread to transport their curries. The cheap loaf being an optimal substitute for the traditional flat roti bread.

The Outer West area of the city of Durban extends from Kloof inland and includes the beautiful Valley of 1000 Hills, up the winding and picturesque Botha’s Hill. The months of February and March have several sporting events to inspire you to fulfil the exercise resolutions… beginning with the Midmar Mile (9-10 February), one of the world’s largest openwater events. ELEPHANT COAST The Elephant Coast, named after a large herd of African elephant that lived in the region for centuries which were once hunted out but have been reintroduced in recent years, is situated in the north-eastern part of KwaZulu-Natal and is considered by many as one of South Africa’s most beautiful and unspoilt areas with its diverse flora and fauna and abundant biodiversity. With this region extending from the Lubombo Mountains in the west to the warm Indian Ocean in the east, and from Mozambique in the north to the Umfolozi River in the south, it offers visitors every changing views of a wide variety of biodiversity and landscapes. The region includes several reserves, including the Hluhluwe-Imfolosi Game Reserve, uMkhuze Game Reserve, some private game reserves as well as the iSimangaliso Wetland Park which was South Africa’s first proclaimed World Heritage Site and stretches from Kosi Bay to about 20km south of Maphelane. Not only is the iSimangaliso Wetland Park home to some of these reintroduced African elephants, but also to lion, rhino, leopard and buffalo – making it a great place to spot the Big 5. In addition to this it is home to another of Africa’s apex predators... the Nile crocodile. iSimangaliso boasts one of the most significant populations of this large freshwater predator in Southern Africa and in a recent aerial count, the density of basking crocodiles in one section was recorded as the equivalent of 99 individuals per kilometre! Crocodiles are threatened by habitat removal, illegal killings, destruction of
nesting sites and human disturbance. Visitors to the Park can learn about this amazing pre-historic species at the St Lucia Crocodile Education Centre which is managed by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, was established in 1979 by the late Tony Pooley. Originally a research centre for the study of crocodiles, it has evolved into an educational and tourist facility as well contributing a huge amount of knowledge towards the conservation of these reptiles. Recently, sixty yearling Nile crocodiles were released into the Nkazama Stream on the Eastern Shores section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park - these youngsters join the approximately 1000 adult crocodiles already living wild in the Park, predominantly in the Lake St Lucia estuarine system. In addition to the spectacular wildlife, beautiful beaches and expansive scenery, this region also offers some of South Africa’s finest birding, with over 25 different birding spots and more than 500 species recorded. The uMkhuze section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, also boasts more than 420 species recorded, and is renowned for its game-viewing hides.

ZULULAND Zululand is a place where breath-taking hills and valleys are matched by estuaries and beautiful beaches; where heartfelt hospitality and Zulu traditions are experienced – drink from the calabash at a traditional tribal village or savour the aroma of shisanyama at a township tavern. Lose yourself in the wilds of a nature reserve, along a stretch of beach or on the back of a game viewing vehicle. Start your Zululand experience at the Umlalazi Nature Reserve in Mtunzini for wonderful opportunities to experience both land and water… canoe and fish in the estuaries, take romantic strolls along the beautiful beach, swim in the sea, spot wonderful birdlife and a variety of small game in the coastal forest. Or head inland on Route 66 one of the oldest trade routes through Zululand between Gingindlovu and Phongolo. Settlers in Port Natal (now Durban) would set off in ox-wagons on well-worn tracks into the heart of the Zulu Kingdom to hunt and trade, stopping first for permission to do so from the Zulu king. Pop into Eshowe and visit the Fort Nongqayi Museum Village and the walk in the treetops at the Dlinza Forest Aerial Boardwalk, where the calls of Trumpeter Hornbills and Purple-crested Turacos ring out over the indigenous scarp forest. Just off the main route is the KwaBulawayo Cultural Centre. It was here that King Shaka established his military headquarters and here that he was betrayed by Mzilikaze kaMashabane. Further along the route is the Emakhosini Cultural
Heritage Park, in the Valley of the Kings where seven Zulu kings are buried. Head further inland towards Nongoma, the royal City of Zululand, where are among the attractions are tours of the royal palaces and experiencing Zulu dancing and the traditional way of life. Visitors are enchanted by the atmosphere of the town, the rural simplicity of the people and the informal trading that plays such an important part in their lives. Beyond this is the Phongola Game Reserve, through which the Phongola River runs as it makes its way into the Phongolapoort Dam (also known as Lake Jozini), which is home to the ferocious tiger fish. Game viewing opportunities abound as visitors have the opportunity of watching game from a boat or game viewing vehicle – the adventurous can even experience rhino tracking on foot or have the opportunity of watching elephants frolicking along the edges of the dam. Besides being central to Zulu culture this region abounds in game reserves – such as the Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Park, the oldest proclaimed nature reserve in Africa, and home to the Big 5 and a variety of other game.

The Impala (Aepyceros melampus), one of the most common of all Africa’s antelopes, are mixed feeders that feed on whatever food source is best seasonally which gives them a huge advantage over other antelopes that either just graze or just browse. During the summer months Impalas usually consume a higher percentage of green grass as it is more protein rich with less secondary compounds to digest, and in winter months a higher percentage of browsing is done, usually with a preference to Acacia (now known as Vachellea) trees.

BATTLEFIELDS The Battlefields region, with its battle sites, graveyards, memorials and museums, is a popular destination for history buffs. Visitors from around the world come to wander around these sites that once saw some of the bloodiest battles in history fought between, Zulu, Brit and Boer. This region however does not only play host to countless monuments and well-preserved artefacts, its hills and valleys are home to sporting and adventure activities, game reserves, art and crafts as well as golf courses and hot springs. The wars that swept across South Africa between 1879 and 1902 were brutal, but its history starts long before this with the legendary King Shaka and the Zulu nation creating upheaval among local tribes. The Voortrekkers had crossed the Drakensberg to settle on the land, and the British colonists had settled at what was known as ‘Port Natal’, now Durban. What followed was an era of war, as the Zulus, Voortrekkers and British clashed in some of the bloodiest battles in the history of South Africa, shaping the towns and villages of this region. The wars were fought over land and sovereignty and played out over almost 100 years. Today people travel from around the world to revisit the areas where these momentous events in our history took place. The Talana Museum, located on the Talana battlefield site outside Dundee, gives a great overview of the history of the region as it houses relics from the Voortrekkers, the Anglo-Zulu and the
Anglo-Boer wars. Nearby sites worth visiting are the famous battlefields of Blood River, Isandlwana, Rorke’s Drift and Elandslaagte. You can self-drive the battlefields with the help of a Battlefields Route map (available tourism offices in the region), but to get the best out of each site it would be recommended to use a local tourist guide or join an organised tour. There is more to the Battlefields than the heroism and treacheries of the past - this region offers great wildlife and adventure experiences too… from the romantic lodges of the Nambiti Conservancy near Ladysmith to the thrill of white-water rafting on the Thukela River. Go mountain biking or horse riding along hills and trails, visit a local craft market for hand dyed cloths, an assortment of pots, woven grass mats and beautiful beadwork, or enjoy the gentle pursuit of fly fishing the cool trout waters near Newcastle and early morning birdwatching along the Amajuba Birding Meander

DID YOU KNOW? The Battle of Elandslaagte during the Second Boer War was one of the few clear-cut tactical victories won by the British during this conflict. This bloody battle was also one of the few occasions during the Boer war in which a British cavalry charge was made inflicting much damage with their lances and sabres. The British however, retreated afterwards and Elandslaagte was re-occupied by the Boer forces two days later.

South African JEREMY LOOPS, born Jeremy Hewitt in Kommetjie, Cape Town, was a modern folk singer/songwriter and environmental activist. As his name suggests, he relied on loop pedals as integral parts of his live performances, and would often borrow elements from across the genre spectrum, including hip-hop, electronica, and traditional African music. After completing his studies, a desire to travel away from South Africa prompted Loops to take a job on board a yacht, resulting in a lot of time spent alone in his cabin with his guitar. DRAKENSBERG Known as uKhahlamba and the Barrier of Spears, the Drakensberg mountain range, with its 3 000-metre high jagged peaks, dominates the western edge of the Zulu Kingdom. This impressive range, from its high escarpment to the rolling hills beneath has been declared a World Heritage Site for both its unspoilt natural environment and its wealth of ancient San rock paintings. Memorable experiences and activities await, from the adrenalin rush of tubing down the mighty Thukela to a romantic spa treatment followed by a sundowner as the sun sets over a spectacular mountain scene. The high peaks, rolling hills and crystal-clear streams, make the Drakensberg an ideal place for exploration. Adrenalin junkies can experience the thrills of scaling the high peaks, whilst families can take the gentler strolls among the flowers and grasses and pause awhile to appreciate the beauty of the surroundings. Look out for sunbirds as they flit around looking for pollen, troops of baboons going about their daily foraging and the majestic eland as it graces the hillsides. Cool off with a dip in a pool or river after couple of hours of hiking, then rest awhile and cast your gaze sky-ward and watch the enormous lammergeier (bearded vultures) as they fly overhead. Seek out ancient Bushman rock art, evidence of the San people who lived in the area long time ago – the earliest of these paintings are about 800 years old with the golden age being between 400 and 200 years ago. No time to hike up to a secluded cave? Then check out the collection of San artefacts
and insightful interpretation of their life at the Himeville Museum. Visitors to the Drakensberg are spoilt for choice when it comes to activities – with everything from a round of golf, horse-riding, trout fishing and even paragliding available. Go on a train ride on the Eshayamoya Valentine’s steam train and enjoy a picnic along the bank of the Ngwangwana River near Creighton (17 February). When it comes to mountain peaks, the spectacular Amphitheatre, which is possibly the most photographed feature of the northern Drakensberg, is a must. Hike up to the source of the Thukela River, and watch as it plunges some 950 metres over the edge of the Mont-aux-Sources Plateau in spectacular fashion. Or if you’d prefer to reach your ‘peak’ by vehicle, then take a 4X4 along the upper Mkomazana River up Sani Pass to the border with Lesotho (2874 metres above sea-level) and enjoy lunch for two at the highest pub in Africa.

DID YOU KNOW? The lammergeier, which means ‘lambvulture’ in German, is a scavenger with a diet consisting mostly of bones. They are generally monogamous and breed once a year. The territorial and breeding display between bearded vultures is often spectacular, involving the showing of talons, tumbling and spiralling while in solo flight.

SOUTH COAST With its sub-tropical weather, blue lagoons and golden beaches, the South Coast is the destination of choice when it comes to anything from romantic interludes to adrenalin adventures. In addition to a myriad of beach activities, visitors to this region can enjoy golf, hiking, mountain biking, diving, whale watching and almost everything in-between. Take the coastal road from Durban and explore the South Coast from the less travelled scenic route – the route that, before the construction of the N2, was the only way to travel down KZN’s South Coast. Take time to explore towns like Umkomaas with its shark cage diving and easy access to the world famous Aliwal Shoal reef and Rocky Bay with its rocky shores and hidden coves; Hibberdene and Umzumbe with their Blue Flag beaches and Port Shepstone with its historic lighthouse. Pop inland for a spot of adventure at Oribi Gorge where you can experience the World’s highest gorge swing and Africa’s longest zip-line tour. Head further down the coast to the beautiful beaches at Shelley-, St Michaels- and Uvongo Beach. DID YOU KNOW? The 1906 the Port Shepstone lighthouse, now a familiar landmark, replaced an old signal station which was is use when the Port Shepstone harbour was still functional. It was cast out of iron in Britain, and in the 1890s was shipped to where it originally stood on the coastline of Scottburgh where it warned ships of the southern end of the Aliwal Shoal. It was then transported to its current location south of the Umzimkulu River where its bright beam shines 26 miles out to sea.
