Dear Alumni and Friends,

I am both honored and humbled by the opportunity to write to you as the 19th headmaster at Lyndon Institute. My meetings with many of you, as well as with the LIAA board, and the celebratory installation ceremony this fall all reinforce my choice to be a part of this special community and have helped me feel quite at “home” here at LI.

In my first months as a member of the Lyndon Institute community, it is easy to see that no dictionary definition can truly capture the special community we are so fortunate to have at LI.

As our school year started with the theme of “community,” I have had the opportunity to reflect on what exactly that means. Merriam-Webster defines it as a unified body of individuals linked as a state or commonwealth; as people with common interests living in a particular area; as a group of people with a common characteristic or interest living together within a larger society; or as a body of persons of common and especially professional interests scattered through a larger society.

In my first months as a member of the Lyndon Institute community, it is easy to see that no dictionary definition can truly capture the special community we are so fortunate to have at LI. While many components of our expression of community can be quantified—such as the number of “thank you’s” received while holding the door for students during transition or the amount of money raised in honor of a classmate or friend to donate towards a project, it is the “feeling” of community that is the most amazing and energizing for me.

During my short tenure thus far, I have found myself welcomed with warmth and sincerity from current students to alumni spanning decades; from current faculty and staff to former administrators and teachers; and from parents and community members around the world. The smiles, handshakes, notecards, emails, hugs and waves have all helped to make me feel like I always have been a part of this special place.

And it really must be special. Why else would so many of you donate thousands of hours and dollars to support Lyndon Institute? Why else would so many of you return to the area to work at LI or send your children here? Because you hope you can be a part of sharing that special feeling you had as a student with your children or your neighbor’s children.

In the days, months and years ahead, I hope that all of the nearly 7,000 living alumni reach out to meet with me, share your stories and perspectives, and provide wisdom and insight into why the Institute was and is such a special place for you. I look forward to serving the LI community and sharing this special “Lyndon feeling” with a whole new generation of students!

New Faculty and Staff

Lyndon Institute Headmaster, Daren Houck is pleased to welcome nine new faculty and staff members.

“As we prepare for an exciting year ahead, I am inspired to welcome such a talented group of educational professionals to our campus,” said Houck. “The diversity of their career backgrounds in combination with their dedication to young people will truly make a difference in the lives of our students.”

Maple Ambassador

Lyndon Institute Junior Katherine Ham was selected by the Vermont Maple Sugar Makers Association as the female Vermont Maple Ambassador. The selection process involves an essay, recommendations from a sugar maker, experience working on sugaring and an interview about knowledge of the processes. The Ambassadors must also have the ability to answer questions from the public at key events. The title also includes a $2,000 scholarship.

As stated on the Vermont Maple Festival web site: “The Vermont Maple Ambassadors have the honor, the responsibility and the fun of representing the Green Mountain State’s signature product during their reigning year.”

Basketball Champions Visit Vt Statehouse

During a trip to the State House in Montpelier on April 22nd, the Lyndon Institute Division II boys basketball team was introduced by Representative Richard Lawrence prior to the beginning of the legislative session. The team also visited with Representative Martha Feltus, VT Senators Jane Kitchel and Joe Benning and Lieutenant Governor Phil Scott.

Representative Lawrence is a member of LI’s Class of 1960.

UVM Green and Gold Scholar

E. Thomas Sullivan, President of the University of Vermont announced the nomination of Lyndon Institute senior, Elizabeth A. Vinton, for the University of Vermont’s Green and Gold Scholarship, an honor awarded to Vermont’s very best students.

Vinton was selected based on recommendations from the administration, faculty and staff of Lyndon Institute who praised her dedication to academic excellence and her commitment to community through her volunteer work.

As a Green and Gold Scholar at UVM, Vinton qualifies for a full-tuition scholarship based on the rate set for residents of Vermont. The scholarship value is estimated at approximately $56,000 over four years.

Her post-secondary plans include enrolling in a pre-med program and pursuing a career in medicine.

Vinton is the daughter of John ’79 and Louise (Caron) Vinton ’85 who reside in Lyndonville. She is the granddaughter of Lyndon Institute Honorary Trustee Drury Vinton and his wife Ruth from West Lebanon, NH. Fall – winter 2014

Duck Stamp Award

Lyndon Institute art students participated in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Junior Duck Stamp Art Program and contest.

Preparation for the Junior Duck Stamp contest and involvement in the program requires students to study and understand the fundamental principles of anatomy and environmental science. The program also provides an opportunity for students to artistically express their knowledge of the beauty, diversity and interdependence of wildlife. LI Announces New Academic Division Structure

is to work on connecting our different academic departments to increase collaboration, shared practices, and interdisciplinary connections. Knowledge learned in one traditional “subject” can be related, reinforced, and expanded by the study of another, and the net effect is a much broader and deeper understanding of the skills and the knowledge taught.”

Celebrating its 148th year, Lyndon Institute opened its doors to a new school year welcoming over 560 students from 18 countries, several U.S. states and over 20 area towns and villages.

“I am both honored and excited to begin the year as Lyndon Institute’s 19th headmaster. There is great energy and excitement all around campus as we prepare to propel our already outstanding program to a new level of excellence,” said Headmaster, Daren Houck. “LI is known for its rigorous program provided in a personalized environment. To continue that individualization, I started a new tradition by personally greeting every student on the first day of school.”

To accelerate forward progress in the future, four new “divisions” will integrate previously separated academic departments, bringing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (a.k.a. S.T.E.M. or “STEM”) into close collaboration; bringing together under the aegis of “Humanities” programs in English, history, fine arts, and performing arts; coordinating within one “World Languages” division classical languages, modern world languages, and “English for Speakers of Other Languages,” popularly known as “ESL” or “ESOL.” Finally, “Career and Technical Education” will coordinate all technical and career science courses. Special Education will rest within the Career and Technical Education division.

“Students learn by making connections and we need to continue to make their learning more relevant,” said Houck.

Sam Critchlow will head the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Division. A graduate of Amherst College, where he won both a National Merit Scholarship and the Walker Prize in Mathematics, Mr. Critchlow has taught in independent schools in North Carolina, Colorado, and New Hampshire. He was formerly LI’s Mathematics Department Chair.

Dick McCarthy will head the Humanities Division. He earned his degrees at St. Johns University (B.A., English) and Middlebury College (M.A., Literature) and his teaching experience includes schools in New York City, Oklahoma, and Vermont. He taught Advanced Placement (AP) English Literature and Composition at St. Johnsbury Academy before joining LI’s faculty last year to teach AP and regular English. He co-authored a book on AP preparation in English for a volume in Pearson Education’s AP Test Prep series.

Sandra Mings-Lamar will head the World Languages Division. Educated at Seattle University (B.A., English) and San Francisco University (M.A., Educational Administration), Ms. Mings-Lamar has worked and taught in the United States of Washington, California, and Vermont as well as in Botswana, Africa. She has many publications and presentations to her credit, as well as experience at levels ranging from primary to adult and in environments ranging from traditional classrooms to digital media.

Twiladawn Perry, widely regarded as one of Vermont’s most accomplished academic administrators, will continue to lead the acclaimed (and state-approved) Career and Technical Education and Special Education programs, which have statewide reputations for excellence and innovation.

Perry serves as the Assistant Head for Technical and Special Education.

“Today’s world requires students to be technology-literate, critical thinkers and problem solvers. Lyndon Institute supports these requirements by creating a learning environment that supports real-world needs,” said Houck.

Students Selected for Vermont Boys and Girls State

Founded in 1935, the American Legion Boys State, a national program, is among the most respected educational programs of government instruction for high school students. Each participant becomes a part of the operation of his local, county and state government.

At American Legion Boys State, participants are exposed to the rights and privileges, the duties and the responsibilities of a franchised citizen. The training is objective and practical with city, county and state governments operated by the students elected to the various offices. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, chorus and recreational programs.

Founded in 1937, under the direction of the American Legion Auxiliary, Girls State is a week-long national program with the goal of introducing government to students entering their senior year of high school. The two-party system is brought to life through organizing and administering mock city, county and state governments. Students campaign, hold party rallies, debates and legislative sessions.

The Vermont Boys State was held at Lyndon State College from June 15th to June 21st. The Vermont Girls State was held at Vermont Technical College in Randolph Center from June 15th to June 19th. At the end of their sessions, both groups had the opportunity to travel to the Vermont State House in Montpelier to put what they have learned to use when a mock-government session was held in the house chambers.

Students Attend National SkillsUSAÂŽ Competition

The 50th annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference and Championships were held in Kansas City, Missouri on June 23-27. SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations.

The annual SkillsUSA Championship brings together more than 6,000 career and technical education students participating in events representing 100 different trades. The SkillsUSA gold medal winners from each state are invited to compete each year.

Students work against the clock and each other, proving their expertise in occupations like electronics, computer-aided drafting, precision machining, welding, medical assisting, automotive technologies and culinary arts.

Contests are run with the help of industry, trade associations, and labor organizations, and test competencies are set by industry.

This year, Lyndon Institute sent six students to the national competition. They were, from the Class of 2014, Devon Bedor, Christopher Hasting, Andrew Hershey, Keith LaPlant, Miranda Martin and senior Jake Daniels. Also joining the team were SkillsUSA advisors and instructors, Melissa Tyler, Jerry Leonard and Chad Simpson.

The students placed in the following categories: Miranda Martin, 6th place in LNA; Andrew Hershey 9th in Welding Sculpture; Jake Daniels 16th in Welding; and Devon Bedor, Keith Laplant and Chris Hasting 16th in Automated Manufacturing Technologies.

Miranda, Jake and Andrew also received a Workforce Ready System Skill-point which is an industry recognized credential regarding workplace readiness.

January Term

Recognizing that student interest and motivation are vital to educational success, Lyndon Institute will be implementing a new initiative aimed at sparking and rekindling student curiosity.

Between the first and second semesters, for the three weeks after the holiday vacation, students will participate in an “interim” term to immerse themselves in either an intensive study of subjects of their choosing or an internship. January Term will be held January 5 – 23, 2015.

The areas of study will be constructed from the passions of our students and faculty. The courses will share many of the following attributes and themes: – Hands-on, applied, active and creative learning activities – Trips to subject and topic related sites

– Opportunities to learn, practice, and create using tools of the discipline or trade – Daily reflection and sharing of learning

– Career explorations within the field of study

– Seminars with professionals or experts in the field of study – Internships (see more below)

– Building community and relationships

– The building of a deeper understanding of our core values

The objective of January Term is to allow every student to create an artifact, or final product, which reflects the acquisition of skill and knowledge in the field of study. These artifacts will be measured against predefined course requirements and objectives and could include: performances, videos, formal presentations, creation of web page resources, certification in a field, a business plan, a journal, a publication, or a product of some type.

Student Serves As Russian Translator

Lyndon Institute alumnus David Peters, Class of 2014, (back row, 9th from left), traveled to Russia with a group of teachers and students from Lyndon State College to serve as a translator in meetings with Valeriy Simonov, chief editor of the newspaper Trud, and Russian Senator, and Member of the Council of the Federation, Igor Shubin. He also assisted in the translation of a meeting with Alexey Anan’in, a director of the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation. David studied Russian languages at LI for four years with instructor Elena Strokanova and in May of 2014, won first place in the Advanced Russian Declamation at the VT Open Russia Language Olympiada.

Commended Student

Headmaster Daren Houck is pleased to announce that Shaylyn M. Clancy has been named a Commended Student in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.

Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2015 competition by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).

Math Teacher, Tim Ulrich was named teacher of the year! Tim received his award, a ceremonial teachers “bell,” during the last assembly in May.

Benefit Dance Recital

This annual spring event brings together dancers from several schools and organizations. All proceeds raised are directed to an area organization that promotes activities involving physical exercise, movement or the arts for area youth. This year, the organization receiving support was the Burklyn Arts Council. Over $1,000 was raised in support.

Bridge Building Competition

The 13th annual Lyndon Institute Middle School Bridge Building competition held on March 22nd drew over 150 students from eight schools. Over 200 people attended the event. The bridges are constructed from popsicle sticks, glue and dental floss. Team “General Lee” from Miller’s Run School won the contest for Maximum Strength. Their bridge withstood a weight of 2,832 lbs.

President’s Volunteer Service Award

Miranda Martin (Class of 2014) was honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Service Award. The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was granted by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama. Lyndon Institute nominated Miranda for national honors last fall in recognition of her volunteer service.

Miranda provided volunteer service to a number of businesses, community organizations and events including the Sheffield Field Day, Wheelock town spring clean up, the Sheffield Food Shelf, her church, the Caledonia County Fair, home health care, and as an assistant health care provider at the Darling Inn.

The Benefit Dance Recital is organized by Rebecca McGregor, LI Dance Teacher and founder/coordinator of the annual Vermont State Dance Festival. The dancers who performed in the Benefit Dance Recital represented Lyndon Institute, Lamoille Union High School, Dance Express, St. Johnsbury Academy, St. Johnsbury Ballet Studio, and Dina Danielson’s Modern Dance Company.

Day of Silence

A Day of Silence was honored by members of the Lyndon Institute SPEAK club on Friday, April 25th. Members of SPEAK did not speak for the entire school day. They could not respond to teachers, answer their friends or join in any conversation.

The Day of Silence is intended to draw attention to the “silencing” felt by the results of bullying and harassment in schools and to bring about a positive response. SPEAK stands for Supporting Peers Equally and Advocating Kindness.

For the SPEAK students, it is a valuable exercise to demonstrate the power of the voice. “On The Day of Silence, I just felt so lonely. I can’t imagine what it would be like to feel that removed every single day,” said Bessie McManus (Class of 2014).

Athletics

An update from Athletic Director, Paul Wheeler

At LI, nearly 50% of the student population is involved in extra-curricular activities. This is an amazing number considering the trend nationally is that fewer and fewer students are participating. We are a large enough school to offer them many opportunities, but also small enough so that nearly everyone who wants to participate can.

Our team’s successes didn’t end after the fall and winter seasons. Both softball and baseball had very successful seasons in the spring as they both played into the state semi-finals. While both teams fell just short of playing for a championship, they filled the campus with exciting games (mostly wins) throughout April, May and early June. Our boys golf team also was close to a title as they were runners-up in their state championship effort. With all team members returning next spring look for the golf team to challenge for a state title again.

All in all, a terrific year in athletics. It was fun to watch our teams in action. They were not only successful, but did it in a way that made us all very proud. They played the right way; with sportsmanship, determination and pride.

New Football Coach

Headmaster Daren Houck is pleased to announce the hiring of Mark Palmieri as the new varsity football coach for the LI Vikings.

With over 39 years of coaching experience, Coach Palmieri brings an extensive coaching history with several schools in the area. For the past nine years, he has served as the varsity football coach for Oxbow Union High School. His first year at Oxbow started with a club team that he coached in the evenings. Over the next eight years, he led the Oxbow team to create a formal J.V. and varsity football program, making the playoffs three times. Prior to joining Oxbow, he served as the J.V. football coach at North Country Union High School.

He was a freshmen, J.V. and assistant varsity football coach at St. Johnsbury Academy for over 23 years where he began his coaching career assisting Coach James Burlingame in 1975.

In 1989 he founded the St. Johnsbury Raiders for grades 5-8. He coached the team from 1989 to 2005 and won three N.V.Y.F.L Championship seasons. In 2005, his son Tony took over the reins of coaching the Raiders while Mark remained President of the team.

In 2013, Coach Palmieri and family were recognized by the Vermont Chapter of the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame for their years of service in youth football. This is the first time the award was presented to a family. In 2010, Palmieri and the Oxbow team received the All Divisions South Team Sportsmanship Award from the Vermont Football Officials Association.

LI's new Headmaster, Daren Houck, and his family are welcomed by LI Alumni from classes spanning over 70 years during the LIAA social for his installation.

We formally welcomed Daren Houck as the 19th headmaster for Lyndon Institute with a two-day celebration in early September. The Lyndon Institute Alumni Association hosted a private reception for Daren and his family that included trustees, corporators, administration and special guests. On Saturday, the public was invited to the installation ceremony featuring presentations and performances by students, faculty, alumni, trustees and guest speaker, Mr. Charles Scranton, the Executive Director of the Rowland Foundation. The weekend ended with a half-time cheer during the home football game where he was presented with a personalized football jersey.

The Lyndon Institute Class of 2014 celebrated Commencement on a lovely June day. The ceremony for 154 graduates began with the invocation by LI alumnus, the Rev. Eric M. Metoyer (Class of 1978) of the Episcopal Diocese of California. Commencement speaker, Judge Dana U. Wakefield (Class of 1964) gave key advice to graduates, including career advice that “one career was no more important than any other. There is no such thing as an unimportant job.” This was the second time Wakefield served as Commencement speaker. In 1989, he returned to campus as LI’s Commencement speaker for his 25th-class reunion.

LI Valedictorian for the Class of 2014 was Nicholas Ruede, and LI Salutatorian was Jinger Li. Nicholas started his address by taking a “selfie” at the podium with his cell phone with laughter from the crowd. He spoke of the sense of community felt at LI and shared that he “was not sure that this is something that can be found at other schools.”

Headmaster Hilton gave his last Commencement address as LI headmaster and commented on the many achievements made by the graduating class. “People will be talking about this class for years to come,” he said.

he 5th Annual Independence Fund Golf Tournament was held on Friday, May 30th at the St. Johnsbury Country Club in St. Johnsbury, VT. o you know what the Lyndon Institute Booster Club is? It is a great way to support our student athletes and to become involved with their activities. The Booster club helps establish a strong parent and community support system and traditions for LI. It is volunteer based and provides support to LI athletes.

Recently the LI Booster Club has funded the following initiatives:

– Rebuilding of the baseball dugouts after the fire

– A new professional mascot uniform, “Viktor Viking”

– Replacement of the State Championship Banners in the Alumni Gymnasium so they are all consistent and uniform in style – State Championship jackets for the boy’s basketball team

– Timing equipment for the alpine ski team – Shoot-A-Way equipment for basketball

– Team benches for field hockey and soccer – Team travel jackets

– Recognition for our senior athletes on senior night

We Made It To Kansas City!

New Informational Broadcast System Installed We asked for your support to raise $1,000 in order to install an informational broadcast system (TV, computer, software and installation) in the hallway outside of the Alumni Auditorium. You responded and because of you we were able to install the system prior to the first day of school this year. This system has enabled us to provide essential communications to our students, parents and community in a high traffic area. The monitor is mounted where it is visible to those attending events in the auditorium as well as the Alumni Gymnasium. We have a similar system located above the cafeteria door. These systems are a wonderful way to learn what is happening at LI. Please take a few moments to check them out the next time you are on campus.

trip to the 50th annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference was an opportunity of a lifetime for six LI students. For many this experience was their first trip beyond the Northeast Kingdom. Thanks to the support of generous donors we were able to meet our fundraising goal to cover all costs for the students and advisors. The Lyndon Institute Alumni Association generously committed $6,000 of the $16,000 needed in order for these students to participate in the national competition. The Independence Fund

You might find yourself having a hard time to get out of your comfort zone, but if you are too afraid to get out of it, you will never see the world outside of your little circle. When you go out of your comfort zone and experience those “first times”, you will feel more comfortable being yourself and getting involved in your new environment, whether that happens to be college, military, or the work force.

Dear Alumni and Friends of Lyndon Institute,

This has been a particularly busy year for the Alumni Association board members. Tim Kirchoff, ’96, and I were a part of the Advisory Committee in the search for our new Headmaster. The Alumni Weekend was even bigger and better. We were able to give financial assistance to currently enrolled students as well as graduating seniors.

And last but not least we are excited to welcome a new member, Kathy Bassett Newland, ’67.

I encourage all alumni to take advantage of opportunities to meet and get to know our new Headmaster, Daren Houck. I have met with him and he has come to an LIAA Board meeting to hear about who we are and what we do as an alumni association. You will find Daren warm, welcoming and genuinely interested in what the alumni have to say. Daren shares my commitment to be attentive to alumni’s thoughts and ideas regarding how we can make the connection between alumni and the LI community stronger and mutually beneficial as we, as alums, act as ambassadors for the school. That is our way of giving back to all that the school has given us and in many cases, our children, our grandchildren and beyond. During Daren’s installation weekend, he enjoyed meeting with alumni and in one case hearing Pearl Ward Baird, ’45, tell of her experiences with O.D. Mathewson as her Headmaster.

Our alumni are approximately 7,000 strong. You will soon be receiving the mailer to solicit donations to the Independence Fund. I ask that you thoughtfully consider supporting the Lyndon Institute Independence Fund. When you support the Independence Fund you also support the Alumni Association. Our ability to enhance the Alumni Museum, fund our endowments to award scholarships and financial assistance is only strengthened when you consider supporting LI. We can’t do the work that we do without your help. As always feel free to contact any board member to express your thoughts or concerns.

From the LIAA President

First and foremost we would like to thank Lyndon Institute and all of the reunion organizers for all that they do to make alumni weekend so successful.

The Annual Independence Fund Golf Tourney kicked off a great weekend for Lyndon Institute’s alumni, friends and family. Many of you indulged in the All-Class Social at Burke Mountain and for those of you who haven’t given it a try, it really is a great ice-breaker, especially for those who have never come back for a reunion.

The cookout under the graduation tent went smoothly this year and we hope many more of you take advantage of great food and the chance to show family and friends where you went to high school.

The Tim Simpson Memorial 5K was a hit and next year it will be more of a campus run. It is important to get-together as a class to reconnect with the school and we encourage you to come back to campus. Unlike any other, our campus is one of a kind.

Rita (Gibson) Calkins wrote: The 65th class reunion was held at the alumni cookout under the graduation tent on the LI football field. There were six members present. We discussed that our class gift would be used towards the Binney Woods Outdoor Education Center. We enjoyed getting together with all the other alumni, having a good meal, and catching up on each other’s lives. We did wonder about those who could not attend.

Fall – winter 2014

Ain H. Kivimae sold his home of 41 years in Bethesda, MD and moved to Maui, Hawaii. He and his wife, Ana Maria, bought a home on the side of West Maui Mountain, overlooking the valley below. Life in Maui is laid back and the people are pleasant, as is the weather. All year he grows roses, papayas and oranges. He is enjoying a calm and pleasant life.

Anita Melville Rousseau lives in Knoxville, TN with her husband, Carroll who just celebrated their 47th anniversary. She is currently teaching high school English at Richard Yoakley School. Anita was honored with the Teacher of the Year Award for 20132014.

A few members of the class of 1977 sent in a recent photo of a “minireunion” they had this summer, when they gathered at Newark Pond in Newark, VT.

Carrie (Bingham) and Michael Boera are enjoying some time off before starting their next grand adventure. Michael retired from the Air Force on June 1, 2014, after almost 33 years of service.

We will look forward to another reunion in five years but you can bet we will probably get together before then. Go Vikings.

Laura (Dangel) Shaw wrote: The Class of ’79 celebrated a 35th reunion during Alumni Weekend in May and we had a blast!! Friday night, Mike John generously hosted a wonderful cook-out at his home where a huge crowd of classmates and their significant others gathered. Saturday night, we were at Tim Chippeo’s beautiful Lilac Hill Inn located in East Burke where we enjoyed music, lots of laughter and a yummy dinner by Apple Cheddar Catering. We held our traditional auction to raise money for LI which is always a great time.

Festivities included a late night bonfire. If there are any ’79 classmates that are not already on our Facebook page Lyndon Institute Class of 1979, then please join. Sarah (Findlay) Nastasia has affiliated with Hammond Residential Real Estate. Hammond Sarah (Findlay) Residential is Nastasia headquartered in Chestnut Hill, and has three Boston locations and fourteen suburban branch offices. In her new role, Sarah will service buyer and seller clients from Hammond’s office. She graduated from Ward College of Technology at the University of Hartford where she studied Architectural Engineering Technology. Sarah is also an amateur sailor on her sixteen-foot Catamaran.

Matthew Laughton is the co-owner of The Café at Gatto Nero, in St. Johnsbury, VT. It was the longtime site of commercial print shop Cowles Press and once housed the CaledonianRecord’s press. It opened just this spring and is a coffee shop with a casual, creative café environment where people can just relax, sit for a while, have coffee and talk. The walls are adorned with artists, Kim and Bill Darlings’ prints, drawings and paintings, and in one corner there’s a handsome wooden counter made by a local carpenter and lined with stools. Amanda Wheeler is the Producer and Host of “Access”, a News Magazine Show on PEGTV in Rutland, VT. The Access News Magazine program highlights positive people, places and events around Rutland County was recently awarded first place for Best News Magazine in New England from the Alliance of Community Media. She just celebrated its fourth anniversary in September. You can watch Access every week from anywhere at PEGTV.com.

Lindsay (Jones) and Brandon Carpenter, ’00, were united in marriage on June 28, 2014 at Pavilion in the Pines on Darling Hill in Lyndonville, VT. Lindsay graduated from UVM in 2006 and will be completing her Master’s in Education from LSC in 2015. She works for the Leahy Center for Rural Students at LSC and is a new member of the Lyndonville Rotary Club as well as a board member for H.O.P.E. Brandon graduated from Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA in 2004 and works for the USDA as a soil conservationist with NRCS in St. Johnsbury. They reside in Lyndonville with their new addition, a chocolate lab named Gus.

Ken Masuda and Hitomi Masuda, of Tokyo, Japan, were united in marriage on April 13, 2013. Ken is a Financial Advisor with JP Morgan in Japan.

Kate (Aldrich) and Justin Choiniere, ’02, were united in marriage on October 5, 2013. Justin has been general manager of a branch of the family business, NEAG, located in Detroit, Maine for the last six years.

For the last three years Kate has been working as a nurse in the endoscopy unit at Eastern Maine Medical Center, the second largest hospital in Maine.

She is working on a Master degree in Nursing Education. The couple is expecting the birth of their first child around the first of the year.

Randy Hazard is a Game Warden for the State of Vermont. Recently he has been assigned to the Canaan Warden Patrol district after completing the full-time police academy consisting of 16 weeks of training. He is also a Marine Corps veteran.

Mia (Casey) and David Hawlk, ’01, of Portland CT, announce the birth of their daughter, Dylan Anne, on August 27, 2014. She joins her sister, Payton Kathryn. David is working as a Master Technician at Mercedes-Benz and Mia is working at the University of Hartford and is also working on her Doctorate in Educational Leadership.

Distinguished Alumni Award 2014 For a majority of the members of the Lyndon Institute community it is difficult to remember a time when Robert G. “Bob” Heath, ’58, was not involved with the school. Bob has served in so many different roles through the years from student, coach, parent, teacher and then administrator and board member.

When attending an alumni event it is inevitable to hear a few Mr. Heath stories. He was an administrator who demanded respect but did so with a huge heart. He has certainly left his mark on LI. Bob served as coach of the Lyndon Institute boys track team from 1964 to 1990. He was such a positive influence on so many athletes that one can often times still hear Mr. Heath being addressed as “Coach”. When the time was upon the school to redesign the old cinder track it seemed only natural that it should be named for Bob. On September 13, 2003 the Bob Heath Track at Lyndon Institute’s Robert K. Lewis Field was formally dedicated and named in Bob’s honor.

Now retired, he continues to support the school in various ways. Bob is still occasionally serving LI’s students on the track with son Rob, ’88, lending some coaching advice. He is a lifetime member of the Lyndon Institute Alumni Association and if there happens to be a home football game in progress chances are he is here on campus still cheering on LI’s students.

The Distinguished Alumni Award was established to honor those individuals who have rendered meritorious service to the community, the nation, the school or who has achieved outstanding distinction in a profession or business.

Former Faculty John “Jack” King, taught Auto Mechanics from 1947-1977 and then became the Vocational Director for many years. John “Jack“ Dunphy, ’57, kept Mr. King in kind regards and shared a story with the Alumni Office about Mr. King finding his students sitting in one of the cars they were working on in class, listening to the world series on the radio. Mr. King joined them after the students explained what they were doing.

Ellen Levitt, was a Fine Arts teacher from 1994-2013. She was directly responsible for many beautiful pieces of artwork around the campus as well as the coordination and production of the Janus for many years.

Remembering Ellen Levitt

The Lyndon Institute community lost a long-time, dedicated member in July with the passing of Ellen Levitt. Since 1994, until her health required that she step away from the classroom in the spring of 2013, Ellen worked quietly, and passionately, to inspire hundreds of artists, book makers, graphic artists and students who never even realized they had a flair for these pursuits.

Her talents and passion for drawing, elements and principles of design, printmaking of all kinds, extensive art history knowledge, surface design, book arts and letterpress printing were gladly shared with her students and her talents and innovative style helped to elevate LI’s art program to a higher level. She and her students won awards for their efforts and each spring a new issue of Janus showcased the writing and artistic talents of our students and her design skills. Under her guidance, the Janus became an award-winning publication.

Ellen was hired in 1994 by Department Chair Barb Follett to share the art teaching load. She developed the book arts and graphic design courses on her own initiative after she had been teaching for a few years. For the next 17 years, until Barb retired in 2011, the pair worked in perfect synch with one another. According to Mrs. Follett, the pair would often switch classes with each other, bringing their unique perspectives to the other’s students.

The countless number of hours Ellen put in before school, after school and on the weekends was not lost on her students.

Andrew Miller-Brown, Class of 2000, spoke fondly of his teacher.

“She put in all of the extra effort to make the class run smoothly– cutting materials and preparing lesson plans–and once you had the skills taught by the binding exercises she really encouraged you to go where you wanted with your own projects.”

Andrew was one of the many students who benefited from Ellen’s support. As a sophomore, he was enrolled in Printmaking 1 with Ellen and progressed through a series of classes with both Ellen and Barb, “to the point where I was in the art room 3 periods a day sometimes including free

periods.” It was during this extra time that Andrew was able to take the bookmaking unit that Ellen was offering as part of her design class. Andrew’s long-held interest in books (writing, reading and how they were made), increased with the two week session. As Andrew recalls, “I was hooked from the beginning of bookmaking. Ellen was a great teacher.”

In 2004, Andrew started Plowboy Press and credits Ellen for the support to make the leap, “I think it says a lot about her dedication to her students and to teaching that she helped me take that step in my career four years after I graduated from LI.”

While Andrew’s passion was for a process that had been around for centuries with little change, Jason Harris, Class of 2013, benefited from Ellen’s knowledge of a technology that changes almost daily. Now a sophomore at Johnson State College, Jason’s passion for graphic design, using Adobe’s InDesign® software, was nurtured by Ellen when he signed up for his first graphic design class. Jason reflects that “Mrs. Levitt enlightened my time at LI. She made me branch out and learn to truly grasp any opportunity that came into reach while at the same time simply enjoying life. She has inspired many of my works and is not only the one who taught me almost everything I know, but was a true friend.”

Ellen’s efforts also extended outside of the art room, to the rest of campus and beyond. She was a member of the Burklyn Arts Council and pursued and received grants in order to bring in visiting artists or to take the students on field trips to museums and art colleges.

She also collaborated with teachers in other departments in a cross-curriculum program. Art students lent their art to selected passages of poetry or dance forms to produce a final book or series of prints that the students were able to design and produce to showcase their work. Dancers used their bodies to illustrate the letters of the alphabet while English students selected poems by William Blake or passages from The Canterbury Tales.

Although it is unfortunate that Ellen has left us, her spirit will live on in the students she inspired and the memories we have.

The works from Ellen Levitt’s book arts project with her students at LI have been added to the permanent collection at the Special Resources Library at the University of Vermont.

Our international students welcomed members of the community to learn more about their individual countries.

The event included activity tables from 18 different countries!
