When meeting with my client Nicole she explained she would like more counter and cabinet space, an island, an open concept floor plan, a gas stove and updated look. I will redesign the existing L- shaped kitchen into a galley kitchen layout, which will offer more counter and cabinet space. Another one of Nicoles complaints was that her kitchen was not set up for a left-handed person. I made sure to add the dishwasher to the left side of the sink off the island. Lastly, I updated the kitchen by incorporating modern style finishes.
Hulbert’s Residence is located at 640 Oak Street, Indiana PA. The Hulbert’s explained they would like to change a room in their basement to an area with a bar that they can host and entertain friends. When first seeing this space, it was small and dark, but had a lot of potential. It was decided to make a six-seat bar with a small kitchenette area. The Hulbert’s wanted extra seating which allowed for two accent chairs and a coffee table for conversating. Lastly, The Hulbert’s wanted a modern sleek aesthetic so the color scheme of forest green, burnt orange, white, gold, and the accent of leather texture was a great option.
Understanding that a marketing office serves as the face of your company, coordinating and producing all materials representing the business. When designing a cowgirl boot marketing office, the atmosphere needed to feel as if the sales rep really wanted to sell boots to women. Overall, the office has a sleek, but western aesthetic. The goal in the waiting room was to make clients feel as if they were ready to buy different boots. There is a display wall of different cowgirl boots for clients to browse while waiting. There are also two comfy love seats with a western print for clients to relax while waiting. The aesthetic stays the same to the group survey room with the black shiplap and burnt orange color accents. This room was kept simpler in the finishes to not distract too much from the seller and clients work throughout the marketing process.
Our team understands that an Oncology office is not somewhere someone necessarily wants to be. It is a frightening experience for both the patient and the family members who may accompany them to assist them through this experience. Our goal in creating this office is to provide a relaxing environment where patients can feel as comfortable as possible. Privacy is extremely important for an Oncology office and that will be another large focus throughout the design. We plan on introducing a waiting room separate for chemo patients that they can get to easily, just inside the main doors. We will incorporate relaxing colors such as blues and greens, that also have ties to nature. This is the same reason that we are inspired by natural woods and light-colored walls and floors. No part of our office should feel “gloomy.” A Japanese Zen Garden has a lot of effect on our design as well. Japanese Zen gardens are shown to help improve concentration, boost your immune system, reduce anxiety, and there have even been studies done on Alzheimer’s patients having reduced stress and enhanced wellbeing from spending time in Zen gardens. This influenced our design so much that we decided our practice would be located on the first floor of the building and include doorways for patients to walk out to the gardens while they wait to be seen.

For my Capstone project I did an adaptive reuse project where I measured an existing barn on the countryside of New Freedom Pennsylvania and designed it into an aging in place Barndominium. Aging in place means to remain at home in familiar surroundings and maintain the relationships that are important. I chose to research aging in place because of my nana. My nana suffers from a rare disease called multiple system atrophy that has left her wheelchair bound not being able to access many areas of our home. With designing an aging in place barndominium a person could buy this home at a young age and live there until death no matter what health problems they may face in the future. This barn creates a minimalist modern feel of clean lines, exposed beams, neutral color pallets, and sleek finishes. The open concept floor plan creates a seamless flow and clutter free space. By incorporating wide doorways, ample natural and artificial light, and many accessibility features, this barn will make a great aging in place home.
