A New Look

The Lymphoma Research Foundation underwent a rebrand in 2024. The brand evolution modernized and differentiated the Foundation’s look and defined our place at the center of the lymphoma community.

We continue to be committed to representing the diversity of our community and the many faces of lymphoma

Our CEO & Chair of the Board

Dear Friends,

The year 2024 was a year like no other for the Lymphoma Research Foundation (the Foundation). We took enormous steps forward in how we define our work and present our organization to the world. The process of evolving our brand began three years ago by listening to our entire community with the aim of understanding how people viewed the organization and how we could expand our mission and impact. Just months after the successful launch of our new logo and brand, we saw the benefits of showcasing how our organization is powered by science and driven by people. By emphasizing the amazing community we serve, we invited even more people to become involved.

In addition to these exciting changes, the Foundation continued to fund an advanced portfolio of cutting-edge research across every lymphoma subtype: in 2024 the Foundation funded 26 research grants totaling nearly $3.2 million. In partnership with our expert Scientific Advisory Board, the Foundation was also able to harness its convening power to address important areas including unmet needs in Marginal Zone Lymphoma and Follicular Lymphoma; develop consensus recommendations for the selection and sequencing of therapies for patients with CLL/SLL; and establish a first of its kind Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Lymphoma Consortium to help address disparities and gaps in care for young people with lymphoma. This year’s report details the work of our talented grantees and the critical projects that would not be possible without your continued generous support.

As always, we are dedicated to recognizing that there are many types of lymphomas, but we are one community. There is great diversity within the lymphoma community - from doctors to patients to care partners to researchers to all those committed to supporting that research - but there is one place they all go to be supported and connected. There is only one organization in the country that exclusively serves, educates, and funds research for every type of lymphoma and only lymphoma: the Lymphoma Research Foundation.

Your partnership and dedication have helped us evolve and grow every day. We remain grounded in industry-leading research and dedicated as ever to our service to the inspiring community of more than one million Americans living with and surviving lymphoma.

Thank you all for your support in 2024. Grounded in Research - Committed to Community,

Steven Eichberg, Chair of

Research

In April, the Lymphoma Research Foundation announced its 2024 grantee class – 26 grants awarded to scientists based at many of the world’s leading cancer research institutions–totaling more than $3.2 million in innovative lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) research.

The Foundation maintains a strong commitment to supporting early-career investigators ensuring they can build a successful career in the field of lymphoma research. This commitment is illustrated by the grants awarded to early career investigators this year. These include eight dynamic Clinical Investigator Career Development Awards, which support physician investigator at the level of advanced fellow of junior faculty member who will contribute to the development of new lymphoma therapies and diagnostic tools. Also included are seven Postdoctoral Fellowship Grants, designed to support investigators at the level of advanced fellow or postdoctoral researcher in laboratory or clinic-based research with results and conclusions that are relevant to the treatment, diagnosis, or prevention of lymphoma.

Research is in our name–and at the heart of everything we do. Our funding, support, and people have been behind some of the most important innovations in the treatment of lymphoma. For us, research is the beginning of a cure.

My grandmother passed away from this disease and I am motivated both academically and personally to conduct research that will hopefully lead improved outcomes for this challenging malignancy.” – Christine Ryan,

Scientific Programs

In 2024, the Foundation used its convening power to implement four important scientific initiatives: the International Follicular Lymphoma Scientific Workshop (FL) and Marginal Zone Lymphoma Scientific Workshop (MZL), the Consensus Recommendations on Treatment Selection and Sequencing in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia or Small Lymphocytic Lymphoma Working Group and the Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Lymphoma Consortium.

Follicular lymphoma (FL) is typically a slow-growing or indolent form of non- Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) that arises from B-lymphocytes, making it a B-cell lymphoma. In April 2024, Chaired by Ann S. LaCasce, MD, MMSC of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the 2024 International Follicular Lymphoma Scientific Workshop comprehensively reviewed the latest research in areas that have been identified as contributors to the unmet needs in FL. This meeting platform facilitated an opportunity for lymphoma experts to engage in discussions about the latest advancements in treatment, while also developing strategies to optimize patient care and improve the design of clinical trials.

Marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) is a rare, indolent nonHodgkin lymphoma (NHL) that comprises an estimated 7% of all mature NHL diagnoses and is the third most common NHL subtype. The rarity of MZL and the small number of key opinion leaders pursuing the study of this lymphoma subtype and related clinical trials presented a serious challenge for scientists and patients. The Foundation’s Marginal Zone Lymphoma Virtual Scientific Workshop, Chaired by Thomas M. Habermann, MD of Mayo Clinic, Rochester and Davide Rossi, MD, PhD of the Institute of Oncology Research, was held in May 2024. The knowledge gaps identified, and the targeted solutions generated during this event will serve as a foundation to guide future research initiatives. The insights will play a critical role in advancing our ability to characterize and treat MZL effectively. Key highlights from the Workshop were highlighted in a special edition of Oncology.

Consensus

Recommendations on Treatment Selection and Sequencing in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia or Small Lymphocytic Lymphoma Over the past decade, treatment recommendations for patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia or small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL) have rapidly evolved. This evolution has shifted from traditional chemoimmunotherapy to targeted therapies. Today, multiple new therapies have become available and patients who were once limited to treatment with chemoimmunotherapy now have many alternatives. However, in many cases, a lack of randomized clinical trial data comparing all treatment options makes selection of the optimal treatment for each patient challenging. Additionally, many patients continue to receive chemoimmunotherapy in the United States, suggesting a gap between guidelines and real-world practice. To address these gaps, the Lymphoma Research Foundation convened a workshop comprised of a panel of CLL/SLL experts to develop consensus recommendations for the selection and sequencing of therapies for patients with CLL/SLL.

Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Lymphoma Consortium

Recognizing the unmet need of AYA’s with lymphoma, the Lymphoma Research Foundation, with the ongoing support of Founding Sponsor the Paul Foundation, the Lymphoma Research Foundation formed the Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Lymphoma Consortium in 2024. This consortium is the first collaboration of its kind, a broad multidisciplinary effort aimed at advancing the study of AYA lymphomas and improving treatments and care for this patient population, from the point of diagnosis through long-term survival. The newly elected Consortium Executive Committee members will seek to organize the body’s efforts by continuously identifying gaps in knowledge which may be prioritized for research funding, optimization of clinical outcomes, and discovery for AYA lymphomas.

Recognizing the unique need of AYAs with lymphoma which are responsible for nearly 1-in-5 cancer diagnoses among this age group, the Lymphoma Research Foundation is committed to supporting the AYA research community, patients, and their families.
