Why March 6?

The National Lymphedema Network was founded on March 6. Saskia R.J. Thiadens, who is the founder of the NLN, is also the one who founded Lymphedema Day in 1994. A pioneer in the field of lymphology, Saskia led the effort to establish a day dedicated to lymphedema awareness. A day that honors the journey that people with lymphedema experience. A day that celebrates the inspiring work of clinicians who treat people with lymphedema. A day that pays tribute to the researchers who support Lymphology with evidence. A day that salutes all the people who give momentum to Lymphology through advocacy.

The National Lymphedema Network collaborated with Delegate Leo Wardrup (R - Virginia Beach) who introduced the first Lymphedema Day Resolution on March 6, 2001 in Richmond, Virginia.

Governor John Rowland proclaimed March 6 as Lymphedema Day in Connecticut 2002.

Senator Susan Fargo proclaimed March 6 as Lymphedema Day in Massachusetts in 2002.

Another State Resolution was passed on 10/17/2002 by Assemblyman Spano in New York.

Why Teal? The Butterfly

Quite simply, the National Lymphedema Network's logo was teal at the time Lymphedema Day was founded. Below is an image of the NLN's first logo.

The National Lymphedema Network started the tradition of butterfly pins with teal ribbons because it is a universal sign of hope. Symbolizing an emergence from darkness of its cocoon into the light, the butterfly additionally symbolized the journey of lymphedema from complete obscurity gradually into the light of awareness.
