Home of the Seasiders
A WARM welcome to players and ofcials of Exeter University 2nds, our guests at the Davey Fort this afernoon in the Devon and Exeter League Premier Division.
We hope it will be just as entertaining as last Saturday’s clash between our Reserves and the Uni’s 5th X1 which ended in a 2-1 victory for our second string, their frst win of the season, and no one was more pleased that new manager Wally Blackmore. Te frst of many we hope.
We had no First Team game due to our scheduled opponents, Crediton United, being given a county cup game which took priority.
We pride ourselves on being a family club at Lyme and it’s good to see so many youngsters at our games, many of them members of our burgeoning youth section, who we hope will become Seasiders of the future.
If we look back through the years it’s amazing to see how many family names crop up all the time with kids following in their father’s footsteps and siblings playing alongside each other. (See page 10).
On of the casualties of COVID-19 was the suspension of our twinning arrangement with US Creully in Normandy. We were planning to celebrate the 40th anniversary of this unique initiative in 2020 but the pandemic put paid to that.
However the good news is that we are hoping we can renew our friendship with our French counterparts with a visit by Cruelly next June. (See page 7-9 for details).
Our Ladies continue with their brilliant fundraising so don’t forget to support their matchday rafe ands look out for their regular Bingo nights.

Plans to re-establish our 40-year twinning with Creully

AT the end of the 1980 season a party of 12 players, led by manager David Cozens, travelled across the English Channel to play a game of football against a small village with a big reputation in Normandy, writes Philip Evans.
Creully was one of the frst villages to be liberated on D-Day by Royal Dragoon Guards coming up one side of the main street and Canadian troops advancing up the other.
Te village’s famous chateau was where the BBC based itself for their coverage of the batle of Normandy and Field Montgomery set up his tactical headquarters just outside the village
Continues on pages 8 & 9
where he met Churchill to report on progress as the Germans were forced into retreat by those troops who landed on the Normandy beaches on June 6 1944.
Many of us had never been to France before. It was the frst game we had played on foreign soil and it was our frst taste of marvellous French hospitality and the potent qualities of their local apple brandy Calvados! Te stories we could tell…

From that weekend in 1980 reciprocal visits had been enjoyed between Lyme Regis and US Creully until 2018 afer which our twinning arrangement was put on hold as COVID-19 spread out of control across Europe.
During those years we had joined in many celebrations and anniversaries, including the 50th anniversary of D-Day. We should have celebrated the 40th anniversary of the close ties we had established with our French counterparts in 2020 but the pandemic also put paid to that.
During these years many friendships have been made between families on both side of the channel and we are keen to re-establish our link with Creully now that COVID has all but disappeared.

Discussion will soon take place between the two clubs with the hope that Creully will be able to visit Lyme in June next year.
For many years Ken Hitchcock acted as the liaison with the Cruelly organisers and his services will be much missed afer his death earlier this year.
First team manager Julien Simier hails from Cruelly and played for the village team before moving to the UK where he has established himself as an excellent coach and manager at the Davey Fort. Julien has agreed to act as the go-between between the two clubs to get the twinning visits up and running again.

Te frst thing that has to be done is to establish how many guests we are able to accommodate next June. A notice has been posted in the clubhouse asking players and members to indicate how many French guests they are able to take.
Ten an organising commitee will be formed to come up with plans to rekindle the huge friendship that exists between the two clubs with emphasis on celebrating the 40-year association which is unique in French and English football.

THIS is the University 2nd team's fourth visit to the Davy Fort – and Lyme have yet to register a victory against the Students. Last season's clash produced a hard fought 3-3 draw with Fred Parsons (2) and Brad Rowe neting for the hosts.
Tyrone Ruth (3), Ryan Fifer, Sam Bevis and Jonny Day were on target as the Ressies booked their place in round two of the Dorset Intermediate cup with a 6-1 win at Drimpton.

ON THIS DAY... 6 YEARS AGO 11 YEARS AGO
Goals from Steve Batey and Dom Rowe clinched a 2-0 win for Lyme over visitors Alderholt in round one of the Dorset Intermediate Cup. On the same day a hat trick from Pete Peacock and singles from Tim Edwards and Polish midfielder Patryk Skibinski saw the Rovers cruise to a 5-1 win over neighbours Uplyme in the Perry Street League Division Four.
