Teen shelter a ‘danger to young children’ THE teen shelter in Anning Road playing field in Lyme Regis will be removed following reports of drug taking, underage drinking and anti-social behaviour. Residents have said the behaviour of some teenagers in the shelter had become a “great danger to young children”. Some town councillors argued that the problem had improved in recent weeks, but it was agreed that the shelter should be removed. REPORT, PAGE 3

Authors to tackle poor child literacy

LYME Regis authors Geoff Baker and Dave Austin are calling on an ‘Army of Grandads’ to help tackle poor child literacy. The authors, both grandfathers themselves, have created ‘Silly Grandad Books’ to encourage grandparents to read to their grandchildren, following figures which revealed that 28 per cent of children finish their reception year without the early communication and reading skills that they need to thrive. LYME WELCOMES REGIMENT TO COMMEMORATE GREAT WAR THE flags are flying in Lyme Regis in preparation for a day of First World War centenary commemorations this weekend.

through the town tomorrow (Saturday, September 22). Lyme Regis granted the Freedom of the Borough to the Dorset Regiment in 1945, and today is one of 12 towns in Dorset which has granted Freedom to its successor regiment, The Rifles. The county regiment will be

among the guests of honour when the enhanced war memorial is officially unveiled in George’s Square. The Rifles will march through the town at 11.45am, with drums beating, colours flying and bayonets fixed, assembling at the war memorial at 12noon. The war memorial has been enhanced with two new grey granite plaques, with five names added,

as well as the rank and service or regiment of the 63 servicemen of Lyme Regis who lost their lives during the Great War. The updating of the memorial has been led by the local branch of the Royal British Legion and Lyme Regis Town Council, and is the culmination of seven years of research by Legion members Vernon Rattenbury and David CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Cricketers celebrate as club’s future secured

MEMBERS of Uplyme & Lyme Regis Cricket Club, who have survived a troublesome season, were in high spirits at their annual dinner and presentation evening, held at the Talbot Arms, where they were told by chairman Ian Thomas that the club’s future was secure after the raising of £8,000 through various events organised by players and supporters.
