Prior to the recent changes in leadership the government suggested it would fund much of the cost of the new system, but Dorset Coun cil’s deputy leader Cllr Peter Wharf has warned that the new arrangements still has the potential to leave “a huge hole” in the council’s finances

■ PRIME Minister will be getting a letter warn ing of the perilous state of social care in Dorset, writes Trevor Bevins

“People who aspire to work in the care sector cannot afford to live here,” she said

Councillors were also told that the authority is promoting the uptake of free school meals and Healthy Start vouchers, and has used funding from government to provide school meal vouchers in the holidays in addition to delivering the Summer in Dorset Programme of holiday and food activities to low income families, as well as a range of free activities for children with special educational needs and disabilities

Concerns have also been raised about planned national changes to the social care funding system which will put an additional bur den on council staff with an expected big rise in assessments and further bills for the council’s adult social care budget to help meet care costs for those who have already spent up to the new limit on their care set by the government

By Local Democracy Reporter Trevor Bevins

Many of the social care beds are available, but not in use, because care home owners cannot find enough staff to operate them, or because they cannot afford to re open sections of homes they had already mothballed to help defer rapidly rising costs

Perversely some better off people are going into residential care before they need to, only to run out of money and then call on Dorset Coun cil to then step in and help fund some of the cost of their care later in life because the limit of their assets has fallen below the nationally set minimum limit

“Nationally the figure is 16 4 per cent,” he said

West Dorset MP calls for new Prime Minister to act on energy bills

He told Cabinet members that the council was also anticipating changes in the national planning system, set out in the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill, which might also result in further alterations to the Dorset Local Plan

WEST Dorset MP Chris Loder used his first question to new Prime Minister Liz Truss to urge action over energy regulator OFGEM’s role in keeping energy bills down

DORSET Council says it is moving rapidly to help local people with the cost of living crisis, including opening a £877,000 discretionary fund

Mr Loder s intervention in the House of Com mons chamber came following concerns that energy prices would rise from an estimated av erage figure of 28p per kilowatt hour to 52p per kilowatt hour across the board

“If we are not granted the dispensations we have asked for from government, we will con tinue to work on the plan, on the new timetable,” said Cllr Walsh, in response to a number of public questions about the plan timetable at last week’s Cabinet meeting

adult social care budget

A staggering 22 per cent of all social care beds in the county are currently empty, more than 700 spaces although hospitals are having trouble discharging patients because social care cannot be arranged leading to a backlog on wards

Dorset Council has been able to offered some help to the sector locally with an uplift in con tract payments and help with recruiting and training although with limited success so far

Around 1,850 people are in residential care in Dorset at the present time the majority of them entirely funding their care from their own re sources

Planning portfolio holder Cllr David Walsh has said that a revised Local Plan timetable would now be considered by the council’s Cabinet in October

“This will include a full revised Local Devel opment Scheme or local plan programme, set ting out the dates for all the milestones along the way to adoption and the opportunities for involvement,” he said

question from Portland Labour councillor Paul Kimber about the level of support on offer in Dorset

Council leader Spencer Flower will tell the new Prime Minister and Health Minister of the need for additional funding to help counties like Dorset which have a higher than average num ber of older people

“We have not yet had any response from government to our requests about the local plan, but have had to delay the programme in any event because of the time needed for ad ditional evidence work, particularly relating to nutrients in Poole Harbour, following the recent letter from the government’s chief planner

The new Prime Minister has since announced a £100billion plus emergency bailout for house holds to help with energy bills

offer financial support for a larger number of people than it currently helps

Speaking afterwards, Mr Loder said: “I believe it is time we saw action to ensure that OFGEM acts in the interests of the consumer

However, full details of an emergency budget to bring in winter tax cuts for millions of people and set out more detail on energy handouts have not yet been revealed at the death of Queen Elizabeth II has overshadowed political discussions over the past week

He said that the county, with a high percent age of older people, was likely to suffer this winter if nothing was done with family energy bills forecast to average £3,600 this autumn and then rise to £4,200 in January 2023

There are also thousands of households who have still not claimed will have the £150 Council Tax Energy Rebate, paid directly onto their Council Tax account

DORSET will have to wait until at least October to discover what the revised timetable for the county’s next Local Plan will be The council had previously claimed that the government had agreed a two year delay for the plan, which shapes future development across the county only to later have the claim denied

The council is also administering the gov ernment’s Household Support Fund to help households with children, adults of pension able age and other households in need of as sistance, including those with disabilities

On a personal note, the Queen’s reign re minds me of two of the happiest and proud est memories I share with my family

Gripped for a week: why I can’t tear myself a way from co verage on Queen

Others are, of course, less keen on the rolling coverage taking over their favourite shows and I understand why they may feel disconnected with the outpouring of na tional grief Even I was a little disappointed that the weekend’s football could not go ahead

Perhaps it’s the journalist in me, perhaps it’s just that I was at home with little else to do, but since then, I have been totally gripped I’ve watched every moment of the Queen’s final journey to Edinburgh and then back to London, the accession of the new King and the growing crowds in the capital

I also support the right to protest of those who do not support the monarchy every one is entitled to their own opinion, as long as these are expressed peacefully

Personal memories: My family and I outside Buckingham Palace, following the awarding of Dad’s MBE in October 2018

It was a distinctly unusual news alert and I immediately switched the TV onto BBC News and watched events unfold from my bed

Returning to the office, I have continued to watch the coverage on a second screen along side my computer, or listened to commentary on the radio, as I’ve put together this special commemorative issue of LymeOnline

It topped off what has been a wonderful summer in Lyme Regis the first where all events could go ahead completely uninter rupted by Covid restrictions From the Fos sil Festival back in May, through the hazy heatwaves of mid summer to the Folk Weekend , it has been a another successful season for event organisers and local busi nesses alike, Lyme continuing to prove it self as the holiday destination of choice for so many

Remembering Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Actually, I should have been wear ing the mayoral robes on that impor tant day, but as all the arrangements had been carried out by my prede cessor, John Broderick, a patriotic monarchist, I was happy for him to increase his term of office by a cou ple of weeks so he could welcome Princess Alexandra He deserved it I was also editing a special sou venir edition which went on sale the next day so my hands were pretty full that day

Like most journalists of my ilk, I have covered a number of royal vis its down the years The first was when I was a wet behind the ear 18 year old cub reporter working for the Express and Echo in Exeter where I trained

A memory rekindled by watching this week’s momentous events fol lowing the Queen’s death and the accession of King Charles III.

The schoolchildren were allowed out of school to greet the princess with the usual flag waving and our royal guest, the Queen’s cousin, met a number of locals who lined the streets for the ubiquitous walk about

Actually, this was not the first time a senior royal had stepped on Lyme soil The Queen’s father, King George VI, paid a secret, flying visit to the golf club to inspect troops dur ing the Second World War

It was a great day for Lyme The good and the great were lined up to greet the princess, who had a kind word or two about standing for so long with my wife, Jackie, who was heavily pregnant with our first daughter, Zoe

As he pinned the MBE to my jacket, Prince William asked where Lyme Regis was I told him it was where the Duke of Monmouth landed to start his ill fated attempt to steal the crown from James II He quipped: “Ha, I shan’t by visit ing there then!”

I remember the occasion well I was deputy mayor at the time but also editing a group of newspapers in Sidmouth

It was one of the most nerve wracking days of my life but the palace staff and were brilliant in ensuring that we never put a foot wrong I was fortunate in being able to take my wife Jackie and my two daughters, Zoe and Francesca, who have been so supportive in helping me organise various events throughout the years

It was the happiest of days After wards we met our son Darren and his family outside Buckingham Palace and enjoyed a long lunch at one of Mark Hix’s London restau rants before going to see ‘Mamma Mia!’ in the West End

One amazing fact is that at one time in their lives all these MBE recipients lived on the for mer council housing estate within 200 yards of each other.

Our campaign was a great success and we raised £20,000 during the year, a good deal of money in those days

This concluded with the organising of a ball at Taunton’s County Hotel at which the entertainment was pro vided by the Weymouth All Stars and Shakin’ Stevens

As a thank you I was invited by CLIC to meet the Duchess of Kent, who was the charity’s patron She was charm itself and she stayed much longer talking to other fundraisers than was anticipated

MBEs were also awarded to former mayor Brian Larcombe (for services to the MoD/Hydro graphic Office in Taunton) and Bob Wheeler (services to the London Fire Brigade)

Mr Larcombe received his from the Queen at Windsor Castle

Amazingly, we were all lined up to meet the prince, something which would never had happened in future years as the prince had a very poor opinion of Her Majesty’s Press as his family were subjected to ever in creasing evasive coverage

■ ALTHOUGH the Queen may not have visited Lyme Regis she has conferred honours on a number of locally born citizens These include MBE recipients Bill Reed, David Cozens, Bar bara Austin and Philip Evans, all for services to the commu nity

Queen, sadly, never visited Lyme Regis. Despite re ceiving its royal charter in 1284 then confirmed by the first Queen Elizabeth in 1591 the good citizens of Lyme fought for the Parliamentarians in the First English Civil War in 1664.

I also had the privilege of meeting the Duchess of Kent when I was managing a group of free newspaper based in Taunton in the 1980s

In 2015 the South London Press, one of the capital’s oldest newspa pers, was celebrating its 150th an niversary This was celebrated with a posh lunch on board HMS Belfast at which the Duchess was the official guest

Also the front of the property is appalling; we have rubbish that isn’t in the bin, Costa cups strewn all over, Magna calling cards chucked in the hedge.

I was a Magna tenant back in 2000 when I had a house in Lym Close, and back then Magna were really good and supported the tenants with a zero anti social behaviour policy and housing officers who actually helped and listened, not ig nore you or never see how things are Times have changed but this really is a poor way to treat their tenants It is beyond me how so many people like ourselves are having to en dure this when all they want is a quiet life and nice neighbours

We have had the cannabis smoking wit nessed by two neighbours but that wasn’t good enough We then managed to get a PCSO to witness the stench and she re ported that she could smell it very strongly in our home

We were asked if we would consider a move, which we accepted, but this is another thing that has clearly been forgotten I am sure that Magna and West Dorset housing can sort a property that they know is coming up for rent rather than just brush us under the carpet

As tenants we all sign an agreement; if we fall behind with our rent, they will have us in court quick enough, so why not with deal with anti so cial behaviour with the same heavy hand?

We have nothing but broken promises from Magna These flats are not sound proofed at all, we can hear everything from upstairs.

Also, I have been in contact with numerous Magna tenants who are going through the same as us but nothing ever gets done other than the usual Friday 4pm phone call

My view is that the police need to get together with Magna and sort it out, or people are going to take it into their own hands

Whilst they do this, the people whose lives are being made miserable are being directed to other organisations like mental health services, GPs, town councillors, MPs, Victims Support, Dorset Council and the Housing Ombudsman, none of which would be necessary if Magna Housing abided by their policies and procedures They have failed in their duty of care to their tenants Magna and the police need to take firm action against the perpetrators

If it doesn’t they suggest to the victims that they can be moved, rather than the perpetra tor Of course, this is a pipe dream There are no properties available so the can is just kicked down the road

We, the victims of abuse, are told to report every incident and record it where possible, but if we retaliate, we are the ones who will be ar rested or evicted

■ WHERE do I start! It s not just Magna Housing who has failed the community, the police need to step up too

■ THANK you LymeOnline for persevering and succeeding in interviewing the PCC

It maybe only a little bit of weed but then it goes to the harder stuff; this need sorting before a child takes something and dies from it But will

■ WE have been tenants of Magna Housing for just over 11 years In those years, we have had a few nice neighbours but more than often we have anti social neighbours above us

The second time Magna did attend a joint visit with a PSCO and the neighbour was told they could be charged under Section 4 of the Public Order Act 1986

In his interview, Mr Sidwick said he had raised concer ns about Magna as he felt they were “failing in their commitment to the community”Magnahas said it is committed to tackling anti social behaviour and takes every report seriously.WestDorset MP Chris Loder, Lyme Regis Town Council and Dorset Council have also recently been involved in discussions over issues of anti social behaviour in the town LymeOnline has agreed to allow all the below correspondents to remain anony mous amid concer ns over possible reper cussions and their safety

I just feel that Magna brush us off constantly with broken promises, rather than actually help ing us We have been tenants for 12 years but it’s clear that someone who is a new tenant can do

On the occasion Magna did respond and take a statement, they promised to update me but they didn’t They ignored requests for a call back and offered no support

I can honestly see why Magna has such poor reviews It’s absolutely appalling how we are treated and made to just go along with this Name and address supplied

The PCC seems to “hope” that now Magna

■ I AM very disappointed on how our situation is being handled by Magna Housing

I like many others have given up and have now gone to the Ombudsman I would sug gest others do the same and stop trying to get any sense out of magna Maybe a slew of complaints will make the ombudsman realise that there is something terrible wrong at this company who simply won’t protect their res idents

They need to be charged with the criminal of fences they are committing, and Magna need to follow their procedures and take firm action

On one occasion, a PCSO requested Magna at tend the property in a joint visit Magna were ‘unable to attend’ so the PSCO went alone

I have informed Magna and, apparently, on three occasions he has been asked to clean this up, but he in fact walks all over it every single day.

After my anti social behaviour complaints and formal complaints were ignored, I sent my com plaints to the Housing Ombudsman

Within two hours of this visit, the neighbour was back in the street verbally abusing someone else

they listen if that happens? I don’t think so It’s the same with anti social behavior; they speak to them and that’s it Maybe Magna should give them three warnings and if it doesn’t stop, then out, not place them else where let them sort it

Magna just try and waffle you off every week at the same time, then it flows over to the following week, while you have a week end of hell

Also, there’s a constant flow of people, he gives keys to non tenants to enter his home, use his facilities and make lots of noise Recently, one of his windows has been smashed due to a huge drug debt owing

Name and address supplied

My mother has witnessed his activities and has emailed in; our elderly neighbour opposite has also, and her daughter, but nothing is done to stop this

If the police know who they are, then act, don’t wait Is it too much paperwork? And where are our nearest police? By the time it’s reported and they eventually decide to get here, it’s all done and dusted

My partner has had to go to the doctors to get medicine to help him relax and sleep Why should we have to live like this? I have also been diagnosed with health problems and I really don’t need this stress at all

Magna sent a letter to us in March 2022 offering us an Emergency Transfer Move but it is now September and nothing has happened, then they just seem to ignore us and brush it under the carpet all the time.

and he has been heard swearing and saying he hates the flat We have also had lots of drug activity/dealing

Magna has a no drug policy but seem to sometimes turn a blind eye; the same with anti social behaviour they just send them to another place which doesn’t solve the problem, it just takes it elsewhere

whatever they like and have zero respect for any body around them

Magna either do not care or have no idea how to deal with the problem They trot out the same statement about their anti social behaviour policy every time they are asked what they are doing They do not act upon their own policies They simply hope the problem will go away

have had a good talking to they will improve

‘The never-ending life of hell’

It’s like they don't want to do anything and hope it goes away The weeks just roll along and nothing ever gets done

At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how many times you report drug use/dealings in a Magna property, nothing seems to get done What it all boils down to is Magna getting its rent and that’s it

These people make others’ lives a misery, they are verbally abusive, judgemental and make of fensive discriminatory remarks about people

In my own case, the police have finally come through for me When I first received death threats from my neighbour, they wouldn’t take action, but following an esca lation of the situation, in desperation I called the PCC and our local MP The police took action and charges have been brought

His cannabis smoking continues and all I have been told is that perhaps Magna could get it sorted so that the smell doesn’t enter our property, not the fact that this is an il legal activity

As for Magna, they have ignored me, cho sen to believe my neighbour over me, despite previous known bad behaviour, failed to pro tect me by not installing cameras, not re sponded in any meaningful way to complaints, closed my complaint even though the court case is pending, and lied by telling me there were no other anti social be haviour problems in the neighbourhood

We constantly record what is going on and send daily emails with what has happened regarding our neighbour.

With our previous neighbour we experi enced just everyday living noises, which is what is expected, but the then tenant left and signed the flat over to a family mem ber

We have spoken to the Environmental Health office and they have said they think this is a vendetta towards us. This individ ual has apologised on numerous occasions but the next day reverts back to his be haviour.

The police are aware of many places that have the use of drugs or deal them but what do they do? Nothing!

In the words of a famous comedian hope fully doth butter no parsnips

The fact we have to work is irrelevant to him as he wakes us up, slamming the bath room door, smashing the toilet seat against he cistern, then generally banging around at that time of the morning, usually 5 30am to 6am We have recorded 17 doors slams in just over an hour

I spoke to a high ranking officer a while back who informed me that Magna never seem to fol low anything up when it comes to anti social be haviour or the welfare of their tenants We are kind of feeling that right now

My family and I have been aggressively, ver bally abused and threatened

I have been made aware that there are many complaints to Magna about this very issue in Lyme All this resulted in another neighbour living with friends for most of the week and another leaving their home alto gether

FOLLOWING LymeOnline’s exclusive inter view with Dorset’s Police and Crime Com missioner, David Sidwick, published on September 2, a number of residents have written letters to share their experiences of anti social behaviour and drug use in the town.Inparticular, residents have complained about the lack of action from police and Magna Housing in addressing long running behavioural problems suffered on the town’s main residential estate, some saying their lives have been made a “living hell” and they have had to consider leaving their homes

When I wake for work early everyday I don’t make a sound, I respect my neigh bours whether above or next to us

I’m not sure if any amount of letters will make them listen but this needs to be sorted sooner rather than later

Our home constantly stinks of cannabis, which seems to come through our bath panel and then fills the whole flat up with the smell

He is extremely loud when he has visitors

We have had zero positivity throughout this never ending life of hell that we have to live in It’s affected our health/wellbeing to the point that we hardly sleep anymore, let alone ever get a stress free day/evening

Since he has taken over the tenancy, he has been a nightmare; doors slamming constantly, slamming the toilet door, toilet seat, shouting, swearing, loud music all at a volume that isn’t normal, and trying to get a reaction from us

Both Magna and police need to step up, sort it out before someone really gets hurt I know of one incident where a young g child picked up a needle and when reported the police the reply was it was from a diabetic person Really? They don’t just leave them lying in the street What is this town coming to we all ask ourselves

If we were to react to him, Magna have said we would be in trouble but it’s okay for him to get away with it

■ I FILED several anti social behaviour com plaints against a Magna Housing neighbour and her friend, also a Magna tenant Some were to tally ignored, others I received an automated re sponse

They live comfortably with the knowledge they are basically untouchable and so carry on their abusive bullying and intimidation

This was around two years ago and that was about it as far as support goes

■ CONGRATULATIONS to the Lyme Regis Society for organising Heritage Open Days in the Guildhall and promoting the town’s his toric heritage

When I researched my book on ‘Elizabethan Lyme’, I discovered that the mayor ’ s accounts for 1515 clearly record that the town hall was ‘in the Millhill or pitt by the mill, it being close to Pawlmers Mill at Millgreen and Gosling Bridge’

A little history with these credits would be a good addition

We were unaware that abuse of someone purely based on disability is classed as a hate crime until very recently How can Magna be un aware of this? How can they leave a vulnerable person to deal with this by them selves?

We eventually had a visit from housing officers, which I had to ask for, who told us that it was just words and asked why it bothered us; we know its not true and they (Magna) know it's not true, so don’t let it get to us I was also asked if I was hypersensitive to it

For two years they have been unable to retain their community safety staff and I have been told by several of them that they are fed up of working there And it’s not just that team Magna workmen are quite open that the com pany is disorganised and shambolic Yet they still find the money for new vans and uniforms

Our experience with Magna is that, after the initial contact, nobody wants to know It seems they hope we will go away, bury their head in the sand and ignore it

My concern is that people attending the open days maybe given historically incorrect information about the building

Sue Wilson (by email)

Anyone who has ever lived with a problem neighbour will know how problematic it can be It is not trivial

Online

Having said that, much of the anti social be haviour that we are seeing is not necessarily best dealt with by the police, but by Magna, who at the end of the day are responsible for the safety of all of their clients However, it seems that Magna are in complete disarray

that, as the plaque was thought to correct when erected, there was no need to amend it Peter Lacey, Fairfield Park, Lyme Regis

I would go so far as to say that this housing as sociation is not fit for purpose Is there such a thing as “special measures” for housing asso ciations? If so Magna should be first on the queue

And yes, from my experience it’s primarily driven by drugs It’s tragic when you think that there are young children having to witness the awful behaviour of their parents It does not bode well for the future of the town

These are the people who slam car doors and front doors late at night, bang and crash around when they come home and have loud voices so that the neighbours can hear every word

What a shame that the building has a blue plaque that incorrectly states that it stands on the site of an earlier Tudor (16th century) town hall

I am pretty sure Caroline Flack just had “words” thrown at her before she committed

Some months ago the town council decided

Since then we have been subjected to constant noise, shouting, swearing, general nuisance noise that is mostly deliberate We hear our selves being slandered We get information fed back to us that we are being slandered, publicly It can be a daily occurrence

We are now at the point where we cannot get an answer to emails from Magna We have made multiple anti social behaviour reports through their official channels and get nowhere

Attribution needed a t sta tue

■ READING with interest the letters regarding noisy vehicles, chainsaws etc (LymeOnline, September 2) why not add noisy neighbours to that list?

Where are we supposed to go if the people that own the houses, make the rules, are in charge, don’t help?

The Tudor town hall was almost certainly destroyed during the Siege of Lyme in 1644 The records show that from circa 1649 money was being spent on renovating an existing building on the Guildhall site, it then served as the town hall for some 250 years.

We are dealing with people who truly believe they can do what they want, when they want with no repercussions because, let's be honest, they have been doing just that!

Please can those responsible (you know who you are) keep the racket down Show some consideration to others Just remember some of your neighbours need their sleep as they have to get up in the morning to go to work Name and address supplied

A spokesperson for Axminster Carnival Committee said: "Yesterday (Sunday) the car nival committee were advised by Inspector Grey [Devon and Cornwall Police] that there could not be a guaranteed police presence at Saturday's carnival procession and the impli cations of this for the committee

"We hope to see you at the procession in Oc tober if you are able to make it, and we thank everyone for the kind support they have given us over the last 24 hours Please remember we are a group of volunteers that live in the Axminster area that work to bring the carnival together for the benefit of our wonderful town We do not make decisions like these lightly and are heartbroken that we have had to make this decision especially after the last two years

The carnival procession will instead be held on Saturday, October 15 at 8pm

The carnival was scheduled to take place this Saturday but the organising committee has now been advised by police to postpone the event following the death of the Queen and ar rangements for her state funeral, to take place on Monday, September 19

The King has certainly completed the longest ap prenticeship in the world and for many of his visits to all parts of the country the West Country has been

One thing I always noticed about HRH was his abil ity to get on with anybody, from Lord Mayors to stonemasons; he was just good with people and it made him a popular member of the royal family, es pecially here in the West Country

I have looked back in my 30 year picture library and dug up some images that bring back great memories of a would be King going about his business, until his calling as our sovereign and his place in history

Even in the last edition of the LymeOnline newspa per I shared a photo of the then Prince, not knowing within days he would be the monarch

MEN'S 4 WOOD HANDICAP

The Ladies 4 Wood Handicap between Helen Dowling and Jan Parsons will be played at the beginning of next season as Jan was not able to play We all wish Brian Parsons a speedy recovery

This is a game that Barry tried very hard to lose Cruising along to a comfortable 16 6 lead after 10 ends, Barry looked comfortable, as he has done in all his games Suddenly, a change of jack length, a rejuvinated Rom, and we ' re looking at a scoreline of 18 20 We all know how hard it is to get that last point and Barry is stuck on it for four ends and looking in creasingly frustrated Eventually, that elusive last shot came and ended a highly entertain ing match

MEN'S 4 WOOD DRAWN PAIRS

Ann Allman 21; Nicky Driscoll 11

S Dowling & Steve Pomeroy 22; Barry Driscoll & Joe Morris 6

On paper, Simon and Steve looked firm favourites, and so it proved to be One had to feel sorry for Barry who played very well throughout, Unfortunately, Joe was no match for Steve and they ran out very comfortable winners after a tiring Joe conceded the game

Rom Hunt 18; Barry Rattenbury 21

Another tasty encounter Ann, looking to put yesterday's defeat behind her, found herself up against a very determined opponent in Nicky They slogged it out neck and neck for 15 ends until Nicky's form suddenly left her

Here was a match between two ladies who have never won this title Sad to say that Helen didn't bowl to her potential in this game while coversely Pam looked at her ab solute best Pam took the first 4 ends before Helen picked up a 2. Helen never looked com fortable and barring a 3 shot pick up on end 18 to close the gap to 4 shots, Pam then upped the pace denying Helen any further points

and Ann was able to capitalize and, in the end, had a comfortable win LADIES 4 WOOD CHAMPIONSHIP Helen Dowling 14; Pam Weech 24.

Jasmine Bishop & Sue Rowe 22; Mary Haseman & Pauline Knight 20.

Finally, perhaps the most coveted trophy of all, the Captain's Plate, was awarded to Rom Hunt This plate is given to the member the captain feels has gone above and beyond in their duties for the club Rom has run all this year ' s competitions with military efficiency, always arrives early to st up the rinks, mar shals the car park for big games and helped with the maintenance during the winter This award was richly deserved

One noticeable thing in this game was Simon utilising the mat well up ploy that was his un doing earlier

The last, and one of the best, games of the weekend Jasmine and Sue took an early lead thanks to some sublime leading from Jas mine Ten ends in, Mary and Pauline drew the scores level before a surge from Jasmine and Sue opened up a five shot margin It has to be said that Pauline was having bad luck, twice

knocking up the opposition for shots despite playing exceptionally well Another fightback from Mary, who by now was bowling well, to level the scores at 20 apiece with one end to play Jasmine and Sue held their nerve to pick up the win with two shots I'm sure no one would disagree that Jasmine was the stand out bowler in this match and thoroughly de served her win

This match between Rom Hunt and Steve Pomeroy also looked like a tasty encounter Steve took the first set comfortably 7 1 but lost the second set 7 6 after a 12 end marathon. Steve again took the third set eas ily at 7 2 and the fourth set at 7 3 to secure the win by 3 sets to 1.

MEN’S FOUR WOOD CHAMPIONSHIP

This was a game that I had the pleasure of marking, and what a joy it was This is a tro phy for members who have never won a sin gles competition Keith is a recently joined

Avril Sherring & Alan Nabarro 19; Erica Sarson and Steve Pomeroy17

This saw Simon and Helen Dowling take on Paul and Judith Moffitt What a ding dong battle this turned out to be The Dowlings had the upper hand to start with, opening up a healthy 10 4 lead after 9 ends, having picked up a 4 on end 8 On the 10th end, the Moffitts picked up a three to close the gap to 10 7 At this juncture, Paul asked his wife to bring the mat up to within a few metres of minimum This threw Simon, who, up to this point had bowled impeccably

Rom Hunt 6; Paul Pomeroy 17

This was yet another match up between fa ther and son This scenario has been played many times in the past, with both prevailing Paul continued his earlier form from the 2 wood match, never really looking in trouble,

Alan Weech 10; Barry Rattenbury 21

MEN’S TWO WOOD SINGLES

LADIES INVITATION

TWO WOOD MIXED DRAWN PAIRS

Joe Morris and Ann Allman 13; Barry Rattenbury and Nicky Driscoll 21

Barry and Nicky always looked like the favourites for this title, but, they had to fight for it The lead battle between Ann and Nicky was particularly impressive, with neither lady giving ground Unfortunately for Joe, he was unable to match Barry, who is in a very good form The 13th end could have been a turning point when Joe and Ann were holding a very good 3 shots An expert drive from Barry killed the end and, from thereon in, they were always in charge

Several times after this, the Moffitts were holding multiple shots and Helen would get in and spoil the party Finally, after 16 ends, the Moffitts took the lead for the first time After 21 ends the score was tied,so an extra end had to played Simon puts his first wood on the jack Judith puts her first two just behind Simon, unluckily, making slight contact with his shot wood, nudging the jack back to Judith's woods Paul's first wood then came in for shot, and Helen was unable to dis lodge it

Helen Dowling 16; Ann Allman 5

but, Steve did close the gap to within 2 shots on the 9th and 12th ends After that, Paul cruised to what in the end was a comfortable win to add to his many former wins in the championship Paul will now go on to repre sent the club in the champion of champions competition next year

member against Paul, who is new to the game this year Paul started off very consistently but, Keith always seemed to get that one wood in and pinch the end Paul soon found himself 6 1 down despite playing, for the most part, immaculately Eventually, the pendulum swung his way and he cruised to a comfort able 21 9 win, although the score line doesn't accurately describe the closeness of the game Paul was absolutely delighted to win using new woods that his sister had bought him two weeks before, As I have stated before, Paul is going to give some of our best bowlers a run for their money in years to come

On paper, this looked a very tasty match up between 2 of the most consistent bowlers in the club Unfortunately, Ann never got into her stride and Helen never looked in trouble This was a title I know Helen desperately wanted, and more than made up for her dis appointment earlier in the day

Up to the 10th end, Alan was always in the race, being just a single shot behind Barry and looking relaxed and able to push Barry all the way It's difficult to know if Alan's game went down a gear or Barry's went up one from here, but Barry continued to show his present form going on to win comfortably 21 10

THE ROCKY!

This game provided some excellent bowling both from the leads and the skips Early on, Alan looked particularly good picking up highly contested shots from the greatly expe rienced Steve After 9 ends, it was all level at 9 apiece Then in no time at all Sarson and Pomeroy were leading 17 9 and looking to have the game sewn up I'm not sure quite what happened next but, Erica seemed to lose her line and length and Steve was just missing those crucial conversion shots Out of nowhere it was suddenly17 17 with Avril and Alan going on to win a thrilling encounter 19 17

LYME Regis bowlers held their Club fi nals last weekend and despite earlier forecasts, the weather was beautiful And, for the most part, the bowling was every bit as good.

There were very few surprises amongst the winners, but many of the favourites were pushed all the way

MARRIED COUPLES

Two wood singles is a hard game at the best of times, but when your opponent is 2 wood specialist Paul Pomeroy, then it's even harder Rom tried valiantly to keep pace with Paul but found his consistency just impossible to match Paul eased away throughout this en counter, reaching an unassailable lead after 16 ends

Keith Barnes 9; Paul Stoke Faires 21

Paul Pomeroy 21; Steve Pomeroy 13

Sunday’s result brought to an end of near misses for the Uplyme club They finished as runners up in the Devon League;s 20 over Corinthian Cup and also missed out on promo tion when they were beaten in their last Devon Cricket League C Divi sion East of the season

LYME Regis Football Club have relaunched their match day pro gramme, available free of charge at all Davey Fort games or on the club Facebook page

One big plus of the past season was the perfor mance of their overseas player, Anand Abhishek, whose batting thrilled Uplyme’s large contin gent of supporters time and again and who scored more than 700 runs, the most in the Devon League C Divi sion East

In a conversation I had with club chairman Steve Batey a few weeks ago, he cast doubts on whether playing in the B Division with the travel involved would be sus tainable for a club of Up lyme’s size

Although missing out on promotion, it’s been a brilliant season for Up lyme Had they won pro motion to the Devon League B Division, the highest level that they would have played, I un derstand it was doubtful that the club would have

Cricketers miss out on promotion but have enjoyed a tremendous season

In reply, Uplyme looked at one time to be coasting it with Tyler Wellman carrying his bat for a classy 59 However, none of the other bat ters really got to grips with Upot tery’s bowling attack with Sam Farrow the next highest scorer on 21

Sunday’s East Devon Bash final against Upottery at Glebe Park was an enjoyable game that could have gone either way Upottery batted

But it was close run thing Uplyme needed just two more runs for vic tory from the last ball but Stoneman was clean bowled Maynard (22 for 22) and Pulman (2 28) were Upottery’s star bowlers

Uplyme were badly hit by the unavailability of players, particularly in August, and slumped to seventh place but rallied again and went into the last game still with the chance of promotion

AFTER leading the division for several weeks at the start of the season, Uplyme and Lyme Regis lost their last match and finished in third posi tion

The competition was jointly spon sored by Lyme Regis Media and Nub News

UPLYME and Lyme Regis failed to complete another im pressive season on a high as they were defeated by just two runs in the final of the East Devon Bash T 20 competition at Upottery on Sunday Uplyme’s T 20 team, the Muffin Men, resplendent in their all green kit, sponsored by LymeOnline, also lost in the final to Seaton last season.
